    Angry 1 year post op

Yes, see a therapist. You know that your current reaction to a bunch of stimuli results in you feeling strong emotions that you don’t like - generically, that’s exactly the situation where a therapist comes in handy. I’ve been where you are, I lost something like 70lbs about a decade ago and felt ALL the stuff you’re feeling. I was angry ALL THE TIME. And while it’s bad enough to have those feelings washing through you, let me tell you what’s worse - gaining the weight back as a blended “eff you” to shallow humans and as a protective measure to stop other people saying this stuff to you. I gained all that weight back and once I realized what had prompted that behavior, I went to a therapist because whoa, that is not acceptable. I was not down to staying overweight just so I didn’t have to deal with people basically confirming fat bias I’d suspected for years. I felt so, SO angry for overweight me who’d been gaslit for years, being told that all of these micro behaviors and omissions were just gaps in my self-confidence or me projecting - skinny people have no idea. They’re clueless. My own mother was one of them, and only accepts that I know what the hell I'm talking about after I’ve lost significant amounts of weight multiple times and can do a historical comparison. Anyhow, I was seriously worried that I’d have another freak out reaction after bariatric surgery and had a therapist lined up just in case, but looks like the initial months of therapy did the trick and realigned my thinking. I can now react to people’s comments and changed treatment with a measure of bemusement and, I don’t know, anthropological distance? There’s a lot of social engineering dictating their responses too. But it doesn’t do any good for you to have all those emotions wearing you down. Definitely see a therapist. It’s housecleaning for your brain - whenever someone else cleans your house, they dust the spots you neglect and suggest more effective ways to do things. Allow someone uninvolved to come in and assess whether your current mental setup is actually working for you, and if not, how to change it. PS - 100% co-sign on @GreenTealael‘s note about not being the same person. It’s not just physical, you’ll be mentally different too, and behaviorally different. My sister showed me videos from a family gathering two years apart and it’s shocking how different my behavior is. My participation is different, my volume, my ease, where I am in the crowd, the way I’m interacting with others. Sure I’m thinner and wearing better clothes, but it’s like an engine has been switched on inside me. An outside observer, coming across this bunch of genetically similar-looking people, could easily conclude that I was two entirely different cousins.

    Flinstones Vitamins..?

I've always taken Centrum or the generic equivalent (both CVS and Walgreens carry generic equivalents) my clinic did recommend Flintstones, but I know the ASBMS (Amer Soc of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery) does not recommend children's vitamins, so I decided to go with Centrum. I asked the dietitian about Centrum before I started taking them, and she said they were fine (I take two a day). As long as your vitamins meet the ASBMS standards, they should be fine (mine do...)
  3. I am not a mean and nasty person, but in her case, I would make an exception! I am sure all the nurses now active on Bariatric. Pal are ashamed she was a blot on a normally stellar profession. I know I would be, like my assesment " Did you find yourself missing a nose? If so I just found it, it was located right in the middle of My Business!"

Do you know who is going first? Maybe tell hubs you should, but things are really up to the Bariatric Center. Important thing is YOU BOTH GET DONE, YOU HEAL TOGETHER, YOU BOTH HAVE GOOD LIVES AND A BEAUTIFUL LIFE TOGETHER !
  5. My nutritionist gave me a sample packet and it's the first water I have enjoyed since surgery. However the price is quite high. Does anyone know of a similar berry water flavor that is a little less pricey? Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. For the majority, logging, exercise, not taking the elevator, being more active is simply our medical professional’s instructions. I don't quite get where you get the impression that its "simply the thing to do" "want to be in the team of successful losers” and "stuff that floats around" IDK - Is it beneficial for newbies that don’t have a grasp of nutrition or bariatric basics to wing it? We are all adults. Make your own choices. At the end of the day if your happy with your weight loss... all is good.
  7. You wonder at that, I wonder why a gastroenterologist would offer only a balloon to a 51 BMI as a bariatric solution? Was it just that he could do that here instead of travelling 50 miles to Columbus? Always felt in my ❤ I wanted and needed a RNY with the degree of GERD I had doubted a balloon would have bl8cked off reflux enough.

    Mental Evaluation

Now that is Righteous! My PCP lusts a whole of things wrong with me, largely to skim more monies off my insurances. Oh well, he is a pretty good doctor; had no problem referring me for Bariatric Surgery, for that I shall always be grateful.

Well Well Well, you have broken the 300 lb barrier--that was when I felt this might be doable. Now I seem to be stuck at 205, wanted Onderland so badly but it's like I see it loaming ahead, I almost have reached it, but now? Maybe a mini-stall? I am 9 months out, have led a charmed existance, even when I had a PICC l8ne for 3 months and was being fed TPN I still was losing,a few pounds monthly. ALMOST immediately after it was D/C I lost 30 pounds - kathunk. Now I have gotten back my "Honeymoon" wait loss phenomenon, was bouncing along, just ducky. Have made it into size 18s, many people start their WL there, but I was once 365+ pounds, wearing sizes 28 and 30W clothing when I could find it, usually in Mens Sweats for comfort, so you see, 18 is a THRILL for me! And me Oh my, the selection doubled in accessibility at 20, and even more at 18. That's a REAL PEOPLE size, dontcha know! Still feel my Precios Pouch is not quite right, I was told after my April 12th endoscopy that my opening between my pouch and,he jejunem (second intestinal portion) was " patent". medicalese for "open" so go ahead and advance my diet off of purees, soups and protein shakes. Ha Ha to the INTH Degree- I may have Looked openopen, but the real truth is; my pouch refuses to keep things thicker, even well- chewed down. I have kept up vitamins and other meds but still having the ulcer and pouch pain, lose things in rapid emesis after chewing, trying to eat more varied things, average 7- 10 emesis sessions weekly, so this Wednesday the 12th of June, another Endoscopy, was adding,up the, other day, it is my 12th or 13th Lifetime, I think I could almost start my own I also now have Bowing of my Vocal Cords, it is (a) A normal result of aging, I am 73 now.(b) pressure from my thyroid, nodules that continue v to grow, albeit slowly. Most doctors , especially my PCP and my ENT don't feel this is the reason (c) Too many endoscopy tubes going in has traumatized them. I either lose my voice or it sounds husky and strained. So I have, been having Speech Therapy, and I think it is working for me, although it never did for former President Bill Clinton. But I am still hopeful, not giving up now! Called my Bariatric Clinic one day when I had off and off upchucking, nurse who finally spoke to me was nasty, told me I was sick in my mind, I should know there was NOTHING WRONG with me, didn't need to travel to Columbus, I needed rather to call my county's Mental Health people and set up an appointment there. Stopped everything except fluids, did them slowly, 2 oz every 15 minutes, like I did when my pouch was newborn, and finally, kept down popsicles, and then sugarfree pudding before I dropped off to sleep. Saw my PCP in 2 days, said I was Not Going Wacky-woo, thought they were blowing smoke, said perhaps THEY were more the problem than ME. I should have had my quarterly iron assessment in June, I had an Iron INFUSION in March- well they have not Darkened my Phone Do it since I heard from Thing1 andvThing 2 in Columbus, didn't have another Clinic appointment until August, when I will. be a full11 months out. If they won't do for me, neglect me in this manner, let's see what can be accomplished locally. Plus last week, after an ER visit I was diagnosed with ileitis, inflammation and slight dilatation of the 3rd portion of my small bowel, is it transitory of the beginning of Crohns or IBS? Good thing an endoscopy is already scheduled, so one more thing for my gastroenterologist Dr Upchurch to check out. Until Tuesday evening continue on my Slow but steady liquid/puree diet. Started making my own soups currently have Beef Vegetable and Split Pea on hand, heat,up 1/2 cup and see what I can take in. Last week was cream of Cauliflower, have also made broccoli and,noodle-less chicken multi- veggie. Thought it might be easier, cost-efficent , and this way no preservatives etc like in processed canned soups. Hey it is BORING but it does keep me alive. And I am 115 pounds lighter than I was at Surgery Time, my inward question is "Am I killing slowly my body for this weight loss? I sure have things crop up when EVERYONE ELSE is dropping BP and Diabetes meds, my pill list stays the same or grows. Yeah we All have our 0wnTrip, but am I on the Last Train to Clarksville and just don't know it?

    Carbs

I don't know if protein shakes are generally discouraged in the long run by dietitians dealing with bariatric patients. I guess that's a matter of philosophy as much as a matter of the experiences they have made.
  11. Yes, it is most likely just the glycogen thing - being on a low carb diet and having a low glycogen level will make one more "carb sensitive" than those on a more normal diet. I maintained a relatively high carbohydrate diet (for bariatrics), typically in the 70-100 g range (no particular goal on that, other than trying to optimize nutrition of the non-protein segment of my diet) and never noted any particular weight changes associated with such dietary fluctuations. Indeed, after four months or so I specifically increased my complex carbohydrate intake selectively (addressing some workout energy issues) so that 120g was not unusual on those days, and likewise, no particular weight impact from that (other than continued on trend loss!) Presumably, my glycogen levels were already maintaining at a semi-normal level. I doubt that half a dozen wheat thins would have enough sodium to make a big difference, though as we usually have fairly low levels with our low overall food intake. In our American/Western diet, the high sodium levels that are a characteristic typically come more from the packaged/processed foods in our diet (things like monoSODIUMglutamate, etc.) than table salt we may add to a meal or from classically "salty" foods. Most every time that I travel, I will gain 2,3,4 lb that week, even though calorically my diet hasn't changed much, but I am eating out more that week, and restaurant foods are usually pretty high in sodium, even the "healthy" dishes. That weight drops off after a few days.
  12. Most likely, it is. The tricky thing with protein need is that it is based upon lean body mass rather than overall weigth; various calculators simplify this as most don't know what their LBM is, but do know their scale weight, so assumptions are made, and they typically work reasonably well for people of normal-ish size and body composition, but not very well for the seriously overweight. The "ideal" weight or your goal weight works better for these calculations. Most bariatric programs simply specify that women should get 60-80 g, and men 80-100 g, or something in that ballpark, which tend to be a bit on the high side from general population health recommendations, but a bit of overkill isn't a bad thing considering that we are healing for a while, and want to make sure that we preserve the LBM that we have to the extent possible. I use a little more complex formula that I found that specifically uses LBM (if you know it) and seeks to provide the protein required to renew the body tissue every six months, and it overall comes up in the same ballpark as other recommendations, though provides some insight into some of the mechanism involved. For my 150+ lb of LBM, it works out to a protein need of 100-105 g for a basic maintenance level; a short-ish woman (5ft, give or take) with a normal weight of around 110 lb, her typical LBM would be around 80 lb, so a protein need of a bit more than half of mine - call it 55ish g. Were I to want to add some muscle mass, say about 10lb over the next six months - a reasonable goal without funny drugs and a reasonable amount of appropriate work - my need would increase an additional 40-45g; a reasonable dietary goal if one were so inclined, and far short of the extreme "recommendations" from the body building sources intent on selling protein supplements.

    Help

I've been on bariatric boards for about five years. Based on what I've seen, I would say most people have little to no pain. There are some who do, yes - but a majority do not.
  14. The hospital submitted my paperwork today for insurance approval of the surgery. I’m equal parts excited and terrified. I just got a huge promotion and am overwhelmed at work, so the timing isn’t the best. I’ve been in the bariatric surgery program since January, but for some reason I still feel unprepared for what life will really be like post surgery. I’m scared about the loss of food. Did anyone else here have that same fear? How’s it going?

Impatience & how to prevent loose skin

Way to Go Taoz, it's thrilling to hear from you! One thing nice about my Bariatric Clinic, weighing in Metric, I have left the Triple Digits behind! Long way I have come down and I'm not through yet! My skin looks like my under- skin Siamese twin was removed but the tired saggy skin remains. But you know what? When I put clothes on , I can hide the bulk of it, no longer looks like I just pushed. it somewhere else! And my facial looks keep changing , not sure who I am going to resemble most! As long as it isn't Boris Johnson from England I think I'll be okay!
  18. Oh, I see. I googled it. Glycogen and Diet What you eat and how much you move around also influences glycogen production. The effects are especially felt if you're following a low-carb diet, where the primary source of glucose synthesis—carbohydrate—is suddenly restricted. When first starting a low-carb diet, your body's glycogen stores can be severely depleted and you may experience symptoms of fatigue and mental dullness. Once your body adjusts and starts renewing its glycogen stores, these symptoms should begin to subside. Additionally, any amount of weight loss can have the same effect on glycogen stores. Initially, you may experience a rapid drop in weight. After a period of time, your weight may plateau and possibly even increase.

I totally get the date now. My MIL is taking whole family on a cruise at Christmas (she's going to be 90), it's something she's always wanted to do and has the money to do so...we need to pay for airfare...which is actually more expensive than the cruise..LOL..but we want her to have everyone she wants with her so we are just glad to go. It's like a 50% vacation discount but the memories are priceless. I'm wanting to be as HEALED as possible before the ship leaves the US. Am hoping I can get enough off to be able to do some snorkeling and for that I need to be able to climb up a boat ladder, etc. etc. CROSSING FINGERS! I meet with my dr next week and guess that is when we'll be planning the date. It truly has been one SPECIFIC person in his office, his office manager was never that specifically rude to me..and she never griped at me for calling my own insurance. LOL about Mcdreamy...my dr is a nice looking man, but not @ that level. It is his skill with higher risk cases that has me determined to have him as my surgeon. I think I'll wait until after surgery, to give some positive and constructive feedback. My goal is to never be mean to anyone..so I need to wait and not discuss it in the 'heat of emotions'. However, the one lady could EASILY chase off patients from his practice. She made it clear at the last visit I had that she was NOT happy to be having to take my vitals. I just ignored it. If he wasn't worth the extra hassle, I WOULD have totally bailed...that is for sure! He also is one of the FEW that operates at the hospital that CIGNA prefers and is a 'bariatric center of excellence'..so that part worked in my favor...FINALLY..

    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

It seems I may have reflux as a result of surgery. I can barely drink, my chest hurts and I am constantly nauseous. The bariatric clinic is sending some new prescriptions over to treat it. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I am just going to reply to this topic with an update in case anyone searching comes across this post. I did discuss it with my Bariatric Surgeon and they did not see a problem with it (which honestly still surprises me) but when I saw my Oncologist he just assumed we were putting it off a year and I was FINE with that. So I am seeing my Oncologist again next month and will be scheduling my uptake for most likely late August or Early September (more than a year post op) because I will have to do the Low Iodine Diet for a few weeks before my uptake. The Low Iodine diet is a whole different can of worms. So anyone who is seeing them in the future that is going through what I am, please feel free to reach out to me here and I can discuss my experiences with Radiation Uptakes and Low Iodine Diets after RNY with you.

How much Calcium citrate is everyone taking?

My vitamins per my RD: 1 bariatric multi or 2 regular multis 1500mg calcium citrate 500mg b12 sublingual 18mg iron The following is not for everyone--just cuz of my bloodwork right now: 2000mg d3 100mg b complex (1-2 per week) 400mg magnesium citrate
  23. I am breaking out as well with acne, by my chin, forehead, cheeks, eyebrows, pretty much all over my face and they hurt to the touch. I thought that I was allergic to the bariatric vitamins but my dietitian said that my hormones are out of wack due to the surgery.
  24. Yikes. Corn syrup and sugar listed as ingredients #2 and #4... the high sugar content could definitely be to blame! I’d look around for some lower sugar choices. I personally prefer Premier Protein. I’ve also ordered the Syntrex Nectar variety pack from the Bariatric Pal store and they were pretty tasty IMO.
