I can't get used to being thinner!

It's pretty funny when you go through so many sizes untill you get to goal. You get in a dressing room and get way excited that you are no longer at your largest size. I still kept one pair of my size 22 jeans in my closet. If I have a day I struggled with weight loss or seeing myself smaller. I would put them on to remind me that Yes I'm smaller.

    Support groups

I too was required to go before surgery and once after. At first I HATED it. In a gourp of about 35 people, only me and one other person were banded. The rest were bypass. They were insulting and kept trying to get me to change my mind about a band. They were almost militant about it. I thought they were rude and insensitive. They kept telling me I wouldn't lose any weight with a band. I was very put out so I complained to my surgeon. His response was, "KEEP GOING and prove them wrong!!" If they don't have anything to base these opinions on, maybe they need a successful person to show them that it can be done. So I kept going. With my loss, within 7 months, they can't say that now. They don't say anything negative to me anymore, and now more people are opting for bands. I stay and answer questions etc. and it's worked out. I only go once a month as the time conflicts with my water aerobics class, but the couselor who runs it likes when I come.

    Counting Calories

It's interesting to read the different calorie/protein goals for everyone. My Protein Goal is 75-85 and calories 700-1000. Just started day one of soft foods and after that on to regular foods, yipee! The Beaumont Weight Loss Clinic provides a nice 30 day Nutrition and Exercise Tracker that is check book size; so it is easy to carry along. I'll have to check out the Daily Plate tool.
  4. Exercise is that pesky thing that sucks up all of your energy and makes you ache, but stop for a few days and so does the weight loss. It is definitely what is keeping me going. I am bored to tears at Curves, don't care for the looks I get at the regular gym, and don't get enough of a workout with the WiiFit and other machines I have at home. Keep up the great work, sounds like it is melting off now!!
  5. I am in the process of "working my way up" to P90X. I currently do an advanced Tae Bo tape 3 days a week and the treadmill 2x per week. My question is, does anyone have decent long term experience with P90 X? I have a naturally higher muscle mass (according to my docs) than the average woman, so I don't want to bulk up...yuck! I still need to lose more weight, and wonder if I should focus on losing more weight first. In short, is it any good for real weight LOSS, or just extreme toning? Thanks!

    Weight loss and age

Hello all. I am scheduled for my surgery on 7/9. When I went in for my consultation, I was told that your age effects the rate at which you're able to lose. What have your experiences been thus far?

    Scared of not losing

It's natural to be afraid that this won't work. After all, if anything else had ever worked for us before, we wouldn't have had to have surgery. I would recommend you do NOT tell many people before you are banded. Choose some support people to share with, but otherwise don't put that pressure on yourself of everyone asking you all the time. When most people hear about WLS they assume you will start losing right away, like with gastric bypass. The band is different; many people don't lose weight at all for a few months after surgery, and that gets tough when they've told a lot of people and they are asking them all the time. If you are worried about how to face people who expect you to lose a lot of weight right away, do yourself a favor and limit the people who know to the ones who are closest to you. Once you are obviously losing weight, you can tell people who ask if you want to. But it's up to you, it's your body and it's no one else's business. There are people for whom the lap band doesn't "work". Most often it seems to be people who aren't getting good education from their doctors' offices and/or aren't following the rules. Not always, of course. The biggest confusion seems to be about restriction--a lot of people feel they should get lots of fills until they can only eat a few bites of food. The band isn't supposed to work that way. If you work closely with a GOOD doctor (and his/her team) who is good at educating you about what to expect and what to do, you should be successful. Of course there are no guarantees. Just remember that this process can be slow, but that's part of why a lot of people choose it. Healthier weight loss is slower (1-2 lb/week average) rather than losing 40 lbs a month like with some of the other procedures. Don't put pressure on yourself to be anything more than "average". Good luck to you.

    I got my Date!!

Congratulations!! Wow, 70 lbs down from WW already -- what a great start, and now, with the band, you likely won't rebound from that loss. There's a sticky thread somewhere about how to do the tickers... maybe do a Search on ticker.

    1 year anniversary!

Congrats on your weight loss. It looks like we were sleeved on the same day. I just celebrated my 1 year surgerversary yesterday too. And had my 1 year check up yesterday as well.
  12. Im not sure if the nutrient thing is why your losing hair, I could be wrong but I think it was explained to me that the body changes alot, quickly after surgery(large amount of weightloss quickly at first). Once things slow down hair starts to grow back again. I think the protien might help. I could be totally wrong on this.

    weight loss

Cliff, just to give you an idea that there are different schools of thought about this: I've been advised by my surgeon's team to eat small meals as often as I get hungry, as long as they're planned and nutritous meals. For me, that's about every four hours. So I eat about five times a day. Some meals are a bit heavier than others, but the goal for me is to maintain my blood sugar balance, and to get my nutrition in. I eat about 1200 to 1500 calories a day, about 100g of Protein, and about 60g of carbs. I work out 30 to 60 minutes a day. My goal is to have about 1000 calories a day deficit, which equals about 2 pounds a week weight loss. It's working very well for me. I think the minimal diet you're on is fine, as long as you're healthy and losing on it. It wasn't enough nutrition for me, and after I bumped my nutrition numbers up, my weight loss started moving downward again. I've found having the Bodymedia.com armband (aka Bodybugg) has been an excellent tool for me to track my meals, exercise, and sleeping habits. This is the same kind of band the contestants wear on The BIggest Loser. It really works. Good luck! Dave

To Weigh or Not to Weigh

You'll get yes and no answers on this one. For me, weighing daily is not something that works for me because my weight fluctuates so much. It goes a long way (no pun) for my self-esteem when I see consistent weight LOSS and not ups and downs. Therefore, I weigh once a week on the same day (if possible) wearing a bra and panties.
  15. I don't recommend weighing every day........that said, I am a scale-addict!! I would love to keep it to only once a day! There are so many reasons not to weigh every day though, like the fact that my emotions are all tied up into that stupid number on the scale. And the fact that sometimes when you aren't losing pounds, you are still losing body fat. On the other hand.....If I hadn't been weighing myself so often I wonder if I'd be so good at being accountable for what I eat. I wonder if I'd learn about my body as much as I have. Like, that I generally weight 1.2 lbs more at the end of the night then I will the next morning. And my optimal amount of calories and exercise for optimal weight loss. I track my morning weigh in and all my calories on fitday.com. When I go back and look at the graph vs. my calorie input/output the weightloss makes sense. There are some rough times though when My husband gets frustrated that I beat myself up over a dumb number and he hides the scale from me for a couple of days.....those have been pretty nice days! Did I just confuse you more?!?!? lol

    19 Days Post-Op!

Good luck to you.. I am just 6 days behind you! Hope to go to the mushy foods in a week! Off most my meds and cut insulin levels waaaaayyyyy down! Lost 23# and each day is a bit better than the day before... I will try to follow your journey... Best wishes! Great weight loss
  17. Hello all! I am just over a month outside of surgery. I have been recovering very nicely with no setbacks at all! My doctor placed 4.5cc in my band when he inserted it, Then I got my first official fill at my two week checkup. 2.4cc more went at that time, so i'm up to 6.9cc. I still felt zero restriction, I was able to eat well over a cup of food at a time with zero problems at all. My weight loss had all but stopped as well. So i went in for my month checkup last Thursday and got another 2cc of Fluid into my 14cc band, bringing total to 8.9cc. Now.. since that fill.. I've had no problems eating softies, drinking liquids etc.. I DEFINITELY can feel more restriction. But I also notice when I lay down to sleep at night, and only then.. I get horrible gas pressure in my stomach! I can usually shift around, roll to one side or the other and it relieves it temporarily. But it usually comes back. I don't have problems during the day, I've eaten only limited solids since the surgery (1/3 of a chicken breast, a couple Protein bars, some wheat thin crackers..) without any problems. So.. What im asking is.. is this normal? is this just an "adjustment phase" where my body and stomach are adjusting to the new tightness and restriction imposed by my band? or is it possible The nurse and I overdid it and I have too much fluid in my band? Thanks for reading, any input is greatly appreciated!!
  18. Hi Folks - it has been over 2 years since my surgery and though I've lost plenty of weight, I have done a horrible job doing any kind of follow-ups about my health. I know that I am probably dealing with some serious vitamin deficiencies (I have weird bruising and am still dealing with hair loss). What kind of specialist/s should I be seeing to get my blood levels checked and to get better long term supplement advice etc? Part of my problem is that I moved away from the city where I had my surgery, so I no longer have access to my surgeon. If anyone has any specific recommendations for doctors in NYC area, that would be so awesome.

    Pounds or percentages?

Do you think of your weightloss in terms of the number of pounds you've lost, or the percentage of your excess weight that you've lost? As of yesterday, I've lost 20 pounds, which is also 20% of my excess weight. For some reason, though, I prefer to think of my loss in terms of percentage. I think it is because I can get a realistic idea of how far I've come and how far I have to go.

    Ouch!

I had my first fill today and OUCH. My dr doesn't use a fluro to locate the port, just goes by feel. It took a bent needle, then he numbbed the area (thank you god). I asked him about numbing it before trying and he said it wouldn't hurt. I am not a needle person at all, and to get poked over and over again just sucked. So I ended up with a 1cc fill in my band. So I said that doesn't seem like a lot since I have a 10cc band that holds 10ccs. Well apparently the medical receptionist gave me the wrong card as the dr thinks I have a 4cc band. The coolest part was that I got to see a photo of my band in place, taken during the surgery. Pretty cool. At least now I know where the port is, thankfully I have a little freckle directly above it so I'll know for the next fill to be on 11/29. Let the weight loss begin again. -Leena

    Situation I need help with

sometimes I think people like to "test" us. To see if we really are serious? I don't know - but from now on, I agree get a to g0 box and wrap it up. Tell her you'll save it for her the next day for lunch. Stick to your guns, eventually she'll learn what you can or cannot eat and that you are serious about your weight loss!

    appetite

Yes, it will--eventually. Chances are, once the operative swelling goes down, you will have a period of time when you are genuinely hungry. It can take several adjustments (fills) over a period of months to achieve good restriction. So, it can be discouraging at first--you may feel as though you had the surgery for nothing. You can lose during this time, but you will be hungry, and any loss will come from bona fide dieting. As you achieve good restriction, your hunger will be HUGELY reduced. The smaller pouch will no longer empty rapidly, and you will stay satisfied for a period of hours after eating only a small portion of food. That said, your MIND may still want to eat things that your body has no need (or room!) for. I've found that this "head hunger" really does go away with time. If your body is satisfied, it really does become easier to say no to the stuff you don't really want or need.

    carbonated beverages!!!!!

I don't. I guess I'm strict with myself. I don't want to do anything that may cause anything to go wrong with my weight loss or the band. Also, I don't want to chance the pain some people get from drinking soda, nor do I want to eat more because the carbonation expanded my pouch.

    Do the voices ever disappear?

Babygirl I have the same issue. I'm in school right now too. As I was talking to my counselor I was going on about what if I fail? I've always stopped when it got tough with weight loss and school. She helped me remember times that I wouldn't give up...like jumping through hoops for 14 months to get this surgery...like being in school now a solid 2 years now. And she said I need to get a new mental picture of myself as not a quitter, but as someone who is persistent. Which kind of clicked because I had been working on getting the a picture of my actual physical self that was more acurate. Before I was over 300 pounds thinking I was healthy. Anyway, it's working to squelch the voice of doubt. And we do become the future we visualize. So when doubt creeps in, push it out with visions of you being victorious. OR better yet, just keep thinking of your positive outcomes so doubt doesn't have room to pop up. Juli
