You face looks like a donut

No, that's not how a loving marriage is. When I met my husband, I weighed less than 100 pounds. Due to a hormonal disorder, I gained up to a high of 278. On a five foot body. Was everything always perfect? No. Sometimes he got angry at the cause of the weight gain and the fact that it seemed there was nothing we could do. He was there for me then and he's been there for me all through this RNY process. And he's my biggest cheerleader post-op. And I'm his. That's what a loving marriage is.
  2. I will be getting on some kind of birth control this week. But not sure what. Is there something out there that doesn't cause weight gain?? Thank you!

    Period Changes after Losing Weight?

I definitely think hormones can change with weight gain/loss.

Honestly, I'm only one month out but from reading everyone's comments on the topic, people only regain when they start eating unhealthy and pushing their intake and grazing (snacking alll day long). Also, a lot of people prevented weight gain because they noticed they gained a few lbs and quickly put themselves in check. Those who have gained did not do that from what i'm reading.

does my situation count as a complication?

According to all your NSV's it seems that you are converting fat into muscle which weighs more, and then the good part is that once you have all your muscle building or rebuilding done, these are the very same critters that are going to take all that preparation and new thyroid support and burn the rest of the fat off probably faster that you could imagine (remain hopeful). And by the way, are you sleeping well? I found out that lack of the right kind of sleep can actually stress your body and not let it loose also. It amazes me to learn of all the factors that contribute to weight gain. Do you get aerobic? or does running to classes do that for you? I think you are in for a good surprise.

The band just isn't working for me

Hey Puddin! I've been thinking about this post since I first read it. And on the surfice, it seems sound. But the thing is, it doesn't matter how much I eat or don't eat. The calorie in/out would hold true if I gained massive amounts of weight on 1200-1500, when I couldn't lose on 1200, 1000, 800 or less than 700 calories. (I did gain 10 pounds in a week at 1000 calories, but that was one week.) It is entiely possible that my weight gain/loss has been only Water, which is fine on one level because it lessens my edema problems. But not fine for why I had WLS. If my metabolism was truely that slow, I wouldn't metabolize medications as fast as I do, and I would gain constantly. But as for low calories, I just don't see how other people can function on sub 700 long term. I will give you that it is entirely prorbable that I entered into a deep Low during the month I was too restricted. But I think the lowered calorie intake made the Low worse.
  7. My dr gave me Seroquel XR to help my bipolar and anxiety but I've read that Seroquel slows your metabolism and I want to know if anyone had these issues and what meds are you taking that seems to work. I have Xanax for my anxiety but I need something for my bipolar issues. They said even if you don't eat with the Seroquel you're still gonna gain weight. I need some insight. Thank you. 8. I don't say anything to others about their weight loss for all of the reasons Emlefe states. Also, for the same reason it is not acceptable to comment on weight gain, I don't comment on weight loss. Let's face it, people who lose weight are very likely to gain it again. Of course, we are in a different situation, but others don't know that.

    Does anybody drink alcohol?

They say that the alcohol is empty calories, it can stall weight loss and promote weight gain. I am not a drinker anyway, so I will not miss that one bit, lol.

I know this is something I want to do, but I'm nervous about the long term weight gain I have heard about. Is there information to read up on? I eat pretty intuitively/healthy now after a lifetime of yoyo dieting, but I don't want to undergo major surgery just to keep yoyo'ing. Thoughts?
  11. I can agree, I dont like or think artificial sweetener is good in any sense of the word good. With that said, lots of stuff like medicine I take that I need (blood pressure etc.) is not good for me in one sense but it is better for me than the alternative. (heart attack, stroke). So for me that is how I think of the sugar free is that as an obese person, when I feel I have to eat something sweetened, it just has to be sugar free because the alternative to it is more sugar and more weight gain. We absolutely should eat it in small amounts and learn to cut it out or greatly decrease the amount and while we are in that process the sugar free is what helps us get there and loose weight in the meantime. I hope that made sense, Colleen
  12. what stage of food are you on I was warned to not be surprised at a weight gain going from liquids/mushies to solids

    Back to Exercising

I started exercising 5 years ago in an attempt to lose weight. I exercised like a mad woman, weight training, tons of cardio and could not lose any weight. That was when I decided to get the band. I found out that I could get off my anti depressants for the first time in over 20 years because when I left the gym, I felt so good. The dr. wanted me to go back on them when I was going through all the stress with my dad these past few months because they are also supposed to help with anxiety but I knew one of the side effects from those things is weight gain. I went back to the gym today for the first time since surgery and I am really glad I did. I miss working out when I don't go. I feel grumpy. I was afraid when I was in Arizona that I was going to lose all the muscles I have built up in my thighs. That was a great NSV when a guy at the gym a few months before my sleeve surgery asked me how I got my legs so toned.

Coping methods for female hair loss

Hair loss used to be listed as a side effect for Metformin, but no longer is due to it not being reported as frequently. It impacts younger premenopausal women differently than it does those in the primary demographics for taking the medicine for diabetes. Also, I am a believer in not assuming that correlation equals causation, but in this case the timeline of it matches perfectly. The hair loss began to abate when I lowered the dose of Metformin. Similarly, for years endocrinologists have asserted that spiro cannot cause weight gain, but the Mayo Clinic now lists it as a side effect as well. If you Google Metformin and hair loss you'll find posts about it dating back more than a decade from many women, including those who were not taking it for PCOS. I do understand that PCOS itself can cause hair loss, but I've had this since I was a teen and not dealt with it except for when using specific medications or products. I'd hoped that losing weight and devoutly following dietary guidelines would get PCOS under control, but I am still experiencing unpleasant issues with it. I'm happy for you that yours is under control now. I will try Rogaine.
  15. I didn’t gain any weight while in the hospital. But then again I was clearly not overly hydrated as most people are because I had to go back and get fluids. My clinic did tell me not to weigh myself for the first two weeks though and I think that was probably because of fluid and inflammation causing weight gain.
  16. I can eat a lot! And can eat around the sleeve too. I do eat around 2 cups of food at dinner... can eat lots of salad...and junk and at other times get the breaks put on by the sleeve at very little food (may not even be protein) I have to write it all down and plan for healthy choices to keep on track. Restriction is a great tool, but will not keep me from gaining all by itself. I can def eat more now than I could at one year out. If you don't have the healthy eating plan in place, you may be caught in a weight gain cycle at some time. It has happened to the best of us at some point. The more tools in the tool chest, the better life you can build!

    Possible Revision

AGREED!!! I had it many years, along with my pregnancies too!! It came and went - never big issue - then little before surgery I was getting it - put on PPI's and kept on them till after surgery - I'm still on them all these years and it just never goes away - so now I'm up to 2 RX pills per day - protonix as well as Prevacid at night time until surgery - just to try and keep it at bay.. I've tried ACV too - seemed to help a little, as a natural thing - I've tried all different things and end up back on PPIs and I just turned 52, I do not want to take 2 pills per day for another 30-40 years, God willing.. It's horrendous being on vacation and having to not go anywhere, cause my chest is killing me... I've had so many work ups and it comes back to the belly/sleeve issue - I also need a umbilical hernia repaired and they won't do it right now, but possibly do it within the revision surgery, surgeon said. They don't want to do it and repair it if I'm not getting the revision, due to weight gain, etc... so I think they're thinking to do it at one time and then I have a better chance of the hernia not coming back .... One can hope!

    Band Removal

One thing that would concern me which I've learned over the last week or two is how little some people are eating. Rebound weight gain would be a problem despite people having retrained their eating habits but because who could stick to less than 1000 calories a day forever without some sort of help? Your body would immediately say "i need more food" surely? And your metabolism could not be unaffected by living on so few calories for so long. But perhaps you could have gradual unfills until you reach a point of stability? Just guessing of course.
  19. Are you near to starting your period? Because that typically causes hormone fluctuations and cravings along with bloat and weight gain. You'll see this happen lots and sometimes it won't be because of your cycle - just random gains of 1-3 pounds due to hormone craziness (fat stores hormones, so as you lose fat, all those hormones get flooded back into your system and can cause weight gain and super fun crazy mood swings too!), Water retention due to eating certain foods or too much salt, the weather, what color your best friend's hairdresser's cousin wore on Monday... In other words, it happens and sometimes there is no real reason or explanation. You just roll with it. But the good news is small weight fluctuations are usually resolved within a few days and you'll see a drop in weight again soon. Just stick to your Protein and water goals, log all of your food so you know you're on track as far as calories go, and keep the carbs from creeping up too high, and you'll be fine.

    my foods, what's wrong...so frustrated..

Hey there... It looks like your doing good with the foods and your calories are really low so maybe up you calorie intake by adding some veggies that you really like. Try spicing them up for a better flavor if you don't like plain foods...... I see that you have issues with your throid and this is a good time to go see you doc or call him and have blood work up done to see if you need to either have your thyroid meds titraded up or down. This can have a negative effect on weight loss etc. Your weight gain is water weight so maybe cut back on the salty foods some. I know that I have really low bp and my doc told me to up my salt intake and I have gained 4 lbs just from the salt intake. But I'm not dizzy anymore. You can look at myfitnesspal.com page and my user name is dorrierobles2003@yahoo.com and i will add you as a friend. I have also posted something on the vet's forum about the reasons for weight gain on a low calorie diet.... It's very informative. Hope this helps and keep up the good work. I believe that a balanced approach of food does help with our cravings and stuff and I work on staying away from breads, pastas, rice, and anything that has flour. the art to this is balancing our blood sugar levels so they don't plunge to low levels......

Progress Pic from Halloween Share yours?

Mine is a little different. I’ve actually put weight on in the last year, I think about 10 lbs? Not sure but I’ve gained weight because I’ve eaten more and the weight gain has really improved my appearance and health. I didn’t try to gain weight by stuffing myself or anything I just have allowed my body to weight whatever it wants to. I stoped trying to control it.

    Ive Cheated Every Day

I just want to add that my surgeon does not require a preop diet. However, weight gain is something that will cause him to cancel the surgery. I would be more concerned about where you are mentally going into a surgery that is life changing without being able to follow preop rules.

How long did you wait for a baby??

We were about a year out -- might've been sooner, but it took me almost 9 months to get pregnant. My surgeon never mentioned a specific wait-time for pregnancy. In fact, I was told I could have the band even if I was planning on getting pregnant right away because it would help with weight gain during the pregnancy.

    March 31st, Anyone else?

Hi Amy & Beza, Hang in there! Ignore the weight gain, that's just from the IV fluids. Just be sure to take your pain meds on schedule, staying on top of the pain really helps you heal faster. I'm definitely doing better this time. Last time I was swollen and so bruised I look like someone beat me with a baseball bat, and I was so tight I could barely swallow a teaspoon of Water at a time. My surgeon was even able to remove a few adhesions that had formed after the post-op infection (my stomach, liver and diaphram were stuck together.) This time, no bruises, some swelling but not too bad, and I'm able to drink slowly, but nearly normally. This band is very loose. I took some lortab last night at bedtime and woke up at 4:30 and took another dose, but I'm not taking any today because I need to be able to drive so I can pick up my DD from school. I do have a lot of gas rumbling around, but no real pain, just a growly stomach and the whole "liquids in, liquids out" thing. I'm already dropping the IV Fluid gains, and am back to just under surgery weight. (But this time, I know I'm not just dehydrating because I was able to drink 50+ oz of water yesterday.) Pretty soon, we'll all be skinny chicks! Always Hunzi

    I wanna flat tummy

Yay Laura, Exciting to buy those smaller clothes. I started at a tight 20w and now a 12. Would love to be a 10 or 8. I was wondering how long you took off from work. I plan to only take two weeks off but my third week will be during thanksgiving so will only work 2 1/2 days. I hope I'm up for it though. I am having a TT and BA. I had a breast reduction 11 years ago before I gained a bunch of weight. Now that I lost boobs are flat and skin stretched from weight gain. Need a bit more on top Did you take Vitamins before the procedure (bromelean, Biotin, arnica (whatever that is)?
