Personally I dont think its a problem at all, I dont restrict carbs at all and I dont count them, but I do stick with low glycaemic, wholegrain ones. I do believe what research says about insulin levels, metabolic disorders and processed carbs but I truly dont believe that means a high Protein diet is the answer, I really think in another five years they'll be telling everyone they've ruined their kidneys, filled their arteries with plaque and given themselves bowel cancer etc. I think we need carbs in our diet in good proportions, but we dont need loads of poisonous white sugary ones. There's a lot of very promising reserch on the glycaemic index and what it can do to aid weight loss, diabetes and PCOS in the very same way that research into high protein suggests, I just think its a healthier more moderate way to do so. So I wouldnt restrict good carbs at all. But that's just me, I know not everyone is going to agree with what I've just said.

Anyone had an adult umbilical hernia?
ragergirl replied to Fauxnaif's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had one repaired about a year ago. It bulges and I would get a nasty painful cramping in my stomache, it did hurt. I had two pregnacies one was a twin birth and I carried most my weight on the belly. After it was fixed it was ok. I wonder what its like now after all the weight loss?? any pressure there bothered it to , I was also the one to diagnose it cause of my pain symptoms, I looked it up online. -
Yoda, your right... I know your right. I guess I just assumed that the weight loss would go hand in hand with srinking my liver. I don't plan on stepping on a scale for at least another 5 weeks.

Diet pills: I don't believe that none work
WASaBubbleButt replied to Sunta's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Most of the time, they don't work. Amphetamines will work short term but you build a tolerance to them and they quit working. Or, when you quit taking them weight comes back. I received a sample of "Fyre" from Syntrax and for various reasons I wanted to try some of their products. I LOVE it! I ordered a bottle but I know better than to think this stuff is going to work long term. I don't plan on taking it more than 1-2 times a week at most. It is no different from the other gazillion products on the market. It will speed you up short term and then quit working. I don't believe drug companies have as much power as people like to think when it comes to weight loss products or conspiracy theories. They just can't stop the unregulated industry of "herbal" drugs, etc. There are far too many companies coming up with their version of snake oil and it really IS snake oil. If the drug co's can't stop the bad co's, they can't stop the good companies. I just read an article tonight about some promising studies on various drugs but nothing tried and true yet. Might want to check it out: Obesity News & Weight Loss News & Fitness News from Medical News Today -

Well, they are all different quantities. The Jello and waters that I spent $50 on I consider grocery expenses and will only be the first few weeks The chicken broth supplies that I spent $25 on will only last for the first few weeks but again, grocery costs The Protein powders will last me the 6 weeks I need to be on protein supplements The Multivitamins will last me 3 months The Iron and Calcium will only last a month. The b12 and the Biotin will last 2 months. The hair care will last 6 months The gas-x strips and biotene mouth spray along with the tylenol are only for the first few weeks but are really necessities that you should buy! I think that covers it, my monthly expenses are on Vitamins which run roughly $70 a month then when I need to re-purchase hair care it'll be the same cost for another 6 months.

Hey Kimmie, I'll be following your thread with interest because I have your identical stats! 330 and 5'7". I haven't had my initial consultation with the weight loss surgeon yet so I'm not sure if I'll have to get to a 50BMI or not. (Right now I have a BMI of 52.) I'm sending good vibes your way!

Migraines get Better after Surgery ?
ragdollx19 replied to coltonwade's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had only been getting two or three bad migranes a year before my surgery. Since my surgery a month ago I have been getting one to two a week. I'd be interested in reading about how this is associated with weight loss. -
Oh i had that conversation with my doctor. I had a borderline BMI and i was afraid to go on a diet because if my BMI dropped I would not qualify. She told me that they go by your intial weight at consult. But you should talk to your doctor about that guy, does he realize that he is referring people to someone who is anti weight loss surgery? I would also check and make sure your doctor uses your intial weight. Good luck!

I just came back from seeing the "exercise specialist". I am so frustrated and confused and I have to admit discouraged too! He tells me in order to get to my goal weight I need to change my eating habits (I GET THAT) and that I need to exercise (I GET THAT). He is telling me that if I follow his instructions my BMI will reduce and I will be down to my goal weight and I won't need the lapband and the insurance will not approve me. Since I started this adventure in May, I have attended seminars, support groups, seen the surgeon, the Weight Loss Specialist, the Dietician, the Psych, and now the Exercise specialist. All of which have a $40.00 copay with my insurance each time I walk in the door. Now my gripe is not the money. But what burns my A** is some skinny dude sitting across the desk from me telling me I need to make changes. I know that, I got it. I've tried. I've had a weight issue since I was 12 years old. Does he think I just now decided to try to do something about it? I've done all the "diets" and I lose, no problem. Keeping it off is another story, I yo-yo and gain it back and more! Does he think if I could do it on my own I would be wanting the lapband to begin with? I lost 10 pound since June 11th. I am trying. He wants me to lose another 10 in the 8 weeks I'm due to go back. I can do that. But 36 years of weight issues have taught me that my weight loss is temporary. I fear this guy is not on my side where the lapband is concerned. I'm really discouraged!

I know you guys won't want to hear this but I'm gonna be the voice of reason. There is no "average weight loss" for the pre-op; that is NOT why you are doing this. It just doesn't matter how much you lose (or don't lose) during the pre-op or the post-op for that matter. It really doesn't even matter until you have the proper restriction in the band. Yeah, usually a by-product of the pre-op and post-op diets is weight loss but that is NOT the goal. The one and only goal of the pre-op diet is liver shrinkage....as long as that happens, you're laffin' and in good shape....if you happen to lose some weight...bonus....if not or if you don't lose as much as you were hoping/expecting....no worries...that wasn't the point. As for the post-op diet, the only goal of that is proper healing for your band placement. Again, if you lose weight....bonus...but that isn't the goal and be warned that many people don't lose much weight during the post-op diet. But that is okay....the point at that time is not the weight loss....it is healing and getting a well placed band. Once you are off the post-op diet, you most likely won't have restriction (or at leat not the right amount) and you still may not lose weight as quickly as you would like (or even not at all). Once you have "proper" restriction the goal is to lose 1-2 lbs per week!!!! So, just remember all your research and why you chose this procedure in the first place and don't lose sight of the long-term goal...THAT should be what you are working towards. Any losses gained as a by-product are just a bonus but certainly don't stress about them or get upset/angry/disappointed if it doesn't happen the way you want....as odds are it won't! You have enough to worry about besides putting this onto your plate! Okay....voice of reason off now!!! :nervous

I've been back on Adipex since around April this year. Lost another 15lbs or so. Got me off the plateau I had hit and gave me lots more energy! I highly recommend it to get back motivated and jumpstart the weight loss. They are EXPENSIVE though ....

Great job! I'm so happy for you that you are doing fantastic Just remember that the closer you are to your goal, weight loss tends to slow down since you don't have so much extra "fluff" lol, so dont' get frustrated!!

Hi Mark, How are you? We met at the Cranbourne meet up but didn't really get the chance to talk. Las Vegas must be a pretty out there kind of place. Did you do much gambling? I am doing pretty well with my weight loss and am getting very close to the 100 kg mark now. I am going to celebrate when I am under it too.:clap2: Good on ya. Susannah

Well, I'm 3 months out and have said good bye to 34.7 pounds forever.. I've had 2 fills and really feel restricted in the morning, but by 4:00-ish I feel I can't eat alot more than I should. Going to weigh-in apt on Friday and will see about another fill. I know my weight loss has been good ...BBBBUUUUTTTT I am dissappointed in my weight loss. I've only loss about 3 lbs in the last month:confused:. In addition to my band, I'm also on high protein/low carb eating (won't say diet b/c its a lifestyle change)...so I expect to lose more than the 1-2 lb week guidline. In all fairness, I should also report I had sinus surgery on 7/2. Not sure if that has something to do with it or not (hoping so). Thanks for all of the support thru this whole process. Getting my band was one of the best things I did!! Kristina

Hi there. I seriously been considering VSG - but I am totally scared! Especially since it is kind of not reversible. I also have ZERO support from my family. (I have no friends because I'm fat and shy) I once lost around 80 lbs and was looking GOOD, but then I fell back into my old habits and over the course of 2 years, I gained all the weight back and then some. I am soooo miserable. I really am desperate at this point. Work is terrible as well because no one wants to have lunch or make friends with the "fat" chick. ***sigh*** I have a meeting tomorrow with someone from HR because I am going to see if it would be at all possible to get unpaid time in the next couple of months to maybe get this procedure done. I know about FLMA, but I have only been there since February. Hopefully they will allow it - I was looking at early Summer. Wish me luck there! Some questions..... 1. How is the recovery time? I work a desk job and am on the phone a lot, so I sit. Do you think it is feasible to go back to work after one week from the surgery? (Of course I would love longer, but this would be unpaid time, and a week might be PUSHING it to ask off for someone that hasn't been with my employer for a year) 2. Since I don't have several thousand dollars lying around, does anyone know of someone that will do a medical or personal loan at an acceptable interest rate for LONGER than 60 months? That is the longest amount of time I have seen so far... and I was hoping for 72 or 80 months. I have good credit (high 600's to low 700's range) but don't see much in terms of flexibility. 3. I suffer from a condition known as Trichotillomania. To be more specific, I pull the hair from my head. I am not so bad at it to the point where I have bald spots like some people, however my hair is kind of ... damaged, and I am ashamed of it. I have heard numerous times that hair loss is an inevitible side effect, and I am wondering how bad the hair loss is? (If anyone else happens to suffer from Trich and has VSG, please respond especially here!) Of course I am thinking of Mexico for this. I really like what I see from Dr. Alvarez, and I have considered Dr. Almanza because of the price, but... I don't know. :lol0: Thanks everyone!

Hello everybody from Horsetrainer.
horsetrainer posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Been working on getting a Lap Band for over a year. My sister got her's about 18 months ago and is doing great so I've been working on getting Banded too. UnitedHealthCare said NO. Said it's got to be IMMEDIATELY LIFE THREATNING condition. I have diabetes, sleep apnea, osteo-arthritis and high colestrol but nothing immediately life threatning so....NO GO. But now I am on Medicare because I'm disabled with arthritis. Several Weight Loss Centers in Tucson and Phoenix have applied to be able to take Medicare but none have been approved yet. So I decided, "to heck with it! I'm tired of waiting. I'm going to fly to Detroit and get the surgery done there." I can get follow-up care from one of the Bariatric centers here in Tucson. Medicare doesn't pay for fills anyway so that would have to be out of my pocket even if I could get the surgery locally. Is there any info on long-term effects of the Band? I would like to hear from people that have had the Band more that 5 years. Horsetrainer -
Your hormones go a little crazy when you have a rapid weight loss. Our fat stores estrogen and when we burn fat, that estrogen can be released and affect our mood as well as our periods and other stuff. I think a lot of people go through this down-in-the-dumps phase after the initial excitement wears off and we have lost some weight. Doing regular exercise can help your mood and help get some of the excess stuff out of your body. There can be other reasons, too, of course, and for a lot of people it's a really good idea to work with a therapist who is experienced in issues of obesity and emotional eating to help get through these things. So much of this process is mental--the band only does a small part of the work. Good luck and I hope you are feeling better very soon!

There is no way that anyone can predict whether your band is going to slip or not because of your eating. I assume that you are eating solids earlier than your Dr instructed? Each Dr gives the eating guidelines for their patients for a reason - to help you heal, the first few weeks shouldn't be about weight loss. Your post op diet might be different to some one elses, but that doesn't mean that you should discard your because another Doc lets their patient eat solids earlier. Just because someone else is ok eating solids earlier, does not mean that you will be too. My advice is to cut out eating the solids and go back to exactly what your Doc told you should be eating at this stage. That, or give the Doc a call and see if they mind if you go onto solids early. Don't risk it, its really not worth losing your band for a few weeks of boring food consumption. -
i know the whole first year of being banded......i had a period every 2-3 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was making up for years of having one or two! My OB said it was a reaction to the estrogen loss from the fat cell. He told me this happens a lot in women and in almost all his pcos clients that had any type of bariatric surgery
