    Gastric Bypass RnY pain

I started my weightloss journey Jan 1 2021, so it's been 2 years of work. I started by cutting out soda and doing some of Chloe Tings youtube workouts at home. I lost 40 pounds there. After that I went into a calorie deficit and lost another bit. My doctor prescribed my ozempic for weightloss and I lost all but the last 18 which was from my pre op liquid diet. I've actually been stuck at the same weight for the last 5-6 months, which is what pushed me to get the bypass. I'd been going to the gym 4-5 days a week for an hour each and just wasn't seeing any progress on the scale or in measurements.

Day 11 PO - Severe/sharp pain left side

I have the same pain on left side of my belly button, it hurts real bad to do any sort of moving, sitting down to use the bathroom is killer. I am 3 weeks post op and didn’t expect to be in this much pain for this long. I was sleeved on 1/25

Surgery more than 2 years ago?

I was sleeved 3 years ago. I hit my goal within the first year and maintain at about 10lbs below my goal. I didn't really stall, that I can remember. I have loose skin on my abdomen and hips. I am no longer pre-diabetic. I have no regrets and am glad I made the decision to have this done. I stay away from foods and drinks my dietitian told me to stay away from. I can't eat beef and pork they give me stomach aches and I am lactose intolerant. I am now a runner, and am training for a triathlon. I struggle with body dismorphia! But have been working on it! 5. Funny, I was thinking about asking this as well! I had the lap-band in 2007 and only told a handful of people I knew would be supportive. I would simply say eating a lot less and exercising and shrug. By the time I was around my goal weight, I was more honest about it, but now that I think about it, skinny people were more dismissive of the surgery, like it was cheating. Now I'm scheduled for the sleeve next week, and again have only told my husband, sister, and one friend that also had the surgery for now. Post surgery I will let more family know as needed, but still plan to be very selective. I love some of the answers above!
  6. If you had VSG 2+ years would you please share your updates? Did you hit your goal? Did you stall at any point and what did you do to get past it? Gain any weight back? Loose skin? Improvements in comorbidities like diabetes or sleep apnea? Regrets? Complications? Tips? Outside of carbonated beverages anything you can't eat or tolerate now? What's life like for you now? I would love to hear your successes and struggles!

Losing too much weight before surgery

Oh it was 100% a great thing! But my insurance will only pay for Ozempic if you are a diabetic. I am not. My A1C was excellent. Long story short I only got the insurance approval for the med x 1 year through some creativity and then I wouldn't have been able to get the med any more. And we all know that horrible statistic about long term maintance of massive weight loss. I also have a long and sordid history with yo yo dieting. This is my 5th (5TH!) time loosing more than 125 lbs in the past 20 years. I would lose it and maintain that loss for 3 or 4 years through white knuckle will power and eating less than 1200 calories a day. Then slowly hunger would win and I'd start eating 1400 or 1500 cals a day and the weight would pile back on. Start the process anew in a year. So this surgery was necessary for me for maintaining, not so much losing. I've come to grips with my maintaince calories being 1200. I just need the removal of a large part of my stomach to make that a possibility for the rest of my life without fighting hunger day after day after day. I just drew the metabolism short straw in life. But if you can get your hands on the GLP meds. They are AMAZING. I lost 85 lbs total in 7 months. My surgeon had me stop the Ozempic 2 weeks before my surgery date. I had surgery in 1/4. In the 6 weeks since surgery I've lost 15 pounds. So far... my weight loss was trending faster with the use of Ozempic AND was eating almost double the amount of calories. Go figure! I don't regret the surgery though. I think this will be the tool that helps me keep the weight off for life this time.

    Not Eating enough?

It's the dreaded stall we all experience, it will pass. Whatever you do never think that you're not eating enough. You're body has changed and when you're full you're full don't eat around your restriction. After six years I still have a good restriction and I am very thankful for it. I've had friends and family members who have eaten around their restriction and have lost it. If it's protein you want try protein shakes but do not think solid foods are your answer at this stage. You'll only begin setting yourself up for failure.
  9. I'm scheduled for a gastric sleeve next week on Tuesday (2/21). I started having cold symptoms last week and can't seem to kick them. Is there a chance they will postpone my procedure if I'm experiencing congestion with no other symptoms? I suspect it's allergies since I went to a clinic and they ran a covid swab which came back negative. I've been on the liver shrinking diet since 2/7 and have dropped about 17 pounds. I'm concerned that the caloric deficiency is causing my symptoms to be prolonged.

    Passport

If you can prove your citizenship they cannot refuse you re-entry. I had surgery in Mx 9/2021 and did not have a passport. I took my driver's license, birth certificate, marriage license (to show my name change) and my social security card and didn't have a bit of trouble. There were 3 other patients and 2 companions in the vehicle with me (6 of us total) and NONE of us had a passport and none of us had a problem. It was perhaps SLOWER, as they had more docs to look at, but it was not problematic.

    Not Eating enough?

Stalls happen, just stick with it and the scale will start moving again. Take measurements too, because sometimes when the scale stops the inches are still dropping.

    Any 50yo or older?

I am almost 74. I had a lapband done in 2009 and did well, but had complications and they took all the saline out in 2012, and finally had the band taken out and getting ready to have the sleeve done sometimes in the last week in March.I remember everything about things to do to prepare and have most of everything ready for the 2 weeks liquid diet before surgery as well for the first 2 weeks post surgery. How soon will I be able to take regular medications post surgery? Has anyone tried baby food during the purée stage?

    Passport

That requirement started in 2007. I know because I did a two-month stint at the National Passport Center in New Hampshire to help them cope with the huge demand. It is currently taking six to nine weeks to get a new passport. You can visit the Passport Center's website for details on how to apply: https://www.us-passport-service-guide.com/national-passport-center.html

    Gallbladder surgery

Simply that I grew a gall stone. Just one. It may have been from the sudden weight loss. Could have been because I was/am menopausal, or have high bilirubin levels (have Gilbert’s). All of which can cause gall stones. The only thing I know is mine wasn’t caused by high cholesterol - my cholesterol was always ok. We discovered it about 8 months after surgery during a liver function scan. First & only symptom was horrendous pain some 16 months later. Had the gall removed about two weeks later. My surgeon said: if you’ve grown one stone, you’ll likely grow more so better it goes. It’s not an uncommon surgery during or after weight loss surgery. Some are discovered during the pre surgery testing and the gall is removed in the same surgery. These are often the high cholesterol caused stones. Others have their stones discovered & their gall removed some time after surgery. These are often caused by the dramatic weight loss. There are always exceptions to this of course.

    Any 50yo or older?

As for vitamins, we are told to take a multivitamin daily for life, Vit B12, calcium and Bit D. I was giving myself B12 injections, prefer that because you only do it once a month and done. But getting the RX had been difficult. So I’m wearing B12 pads, take chewy Vit D and multivitamin. Calcium chews also. My Vit D was low for awhile so I really keep up on that. I have days where I skip the vits, for the most part take them about 5 days a week. my Vit E was low on the last panel I had done.even though I have E tabs I take two a day for fatty liver ( which is no longer!) so I’m surprised it was low.
  18. This week we have a lot of visitors from the head office (I work in a remote site) and I've not seen some of them for quite sometime. Some even before Covid hit. I was the star of this week with everyone talking about my weight loss and all kinds of praise and encouragement. Almost everyone asked me how did I lose the weight including the big bosses from the client and the contractors. I've only told my direct boss and the company managing director about my surgery. I took time-off to do it and told everyone else that I was going on vacation. It helped that we were still working from home while I was recovering so nobody noticed any change during that period. I chose not to tell my coworkers because I didn't want the unsolicited advice and opinions some might have about the WLS and also the follow-up questions. I learned that from when I was on KETO and made the mistake of telling a few coworkers about it. Suddenly I would have people come over to talk to me about it or advising against it etc. It was too much. One guy in particular would come in a for a weekly update on how much weight did I lose etc. Outside work, only my wife, my direct family and two of my closest friends know about my WLS. They have been very supportive and helped me throughout. I've been telling people that I was on KETO, then started a low-carb diet and exercising. I even have a photo of me on my maintain bike to prove it 😂. I would love to hear how did you respond to such questions / remarks?

    Not Eating enough?

it's the infamous three-week stall. It happens to almost all of us (it's not ALWAYS the third week, but that's the most common time. It can happen any time during the first month to six weeks after surgery) I just did a search of this site on it for you - here you go - 17,500 posts! https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=three week stall p.s. it typically lasts 1-3 weeks, so you're likely very near the end of it. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. As long as you stick to your program, it WILL break, and you'll be on your way again.
  20. I like to say I "paused" smoking for 4 years and then returned to smoking for another 15 years. I quit smoking 3 years ago. At the end I was a 2 pack/day smoker and I smoked for close to 35 years. Both times I quit smoking I gained 70 pounds within 3 months. 20 years ago I was able to get most of that weight back off....but not anymore. This is the main reason I am in need of WLS.

    Gastric Bypass RnY pain

the pain shouldn't last much longer. I didn't have any, but I think for those who do, it lasts a few days. I'm a side sleeper. It's been a few years, but I think it took about two weeks before I could sleep on my side again.
  22. I had surgery Monday (2/13) and was doing well and got discharged on Tuesday. The pain had been tolerable, so they only prescribed me some light pain relievers. I'm just curious how long the pain/soreness lasts? I can handle it but it definitely puts a damper on things. I'm home from work for the week, and I can take another week off if needed. My biggest thing, as silly as it is, is that I'm a side and stomach sleeper and I can't do that right now lol How long did the soreness last everyone else?

    Super sad

I'm so sorry! It must have been so disappointing to get that news. There are so many reasons that this might have happened, but that's not really important. Something someone told me a long time ago is that life is 20% what happens to you, and 80% how you react and respond to it. Try to put a spin on this, that you'll get your getting a bonus birthday! You can call it your "belly birthday"! Hopefully by your special day you'll be on your way through recovery without much pain. My doctor told me that a lot of people are up and about and doing just fine within a week. I hope that's true for you! Based on your previous post I would definitely take this time to talk to the nutritionist and settle on a solid plan for your liver shrinking/pre-surgical diet. Anticipating an all-liquid diet is probably giving you a bit of anxiety. I can assure you, it's not as bad as it sounds, and maybe you and your team can come up with an alternative plan. Good Luck!
  24. Hello...I had gastric bypass surgery in October of 2012. Biggest mistake of my life. I got to my goal weight in 2014. I felt pretty good. All of a sudden I started waking up several times a night with severe panic attacks (I had been suffering from this prior to surgery). I was on the right meds for this and they were manageable. All of a sudden they came back with vengeance. I asked my med doc what was happening and she said she didn't know how to help me. Yes, a med provider said she couldn't help me and that the meds I were on were working before. So this shocked me and I was on the search for another doctor. Was having a real difficult time finding someone to help me. I finally found one and what a strange person he was. He was arguing with my primary doc about what meds I should be on. It went on too long. My attacks got more intense during the night. Then they began during the day. It was nonstop anxiety with depression. I joined a CBT program because I became suicidal. The psychiatrist with the program noticed right away that I had had gastric bypass. He knew immediately what was happening. My meds weren't absorbing. He put me on a liquid medication. One that made me gain weight in the first place (ugh). It took a while for the liquid med to work so I was suffering badly. It was hard handing on. CBT program was done and I had to check myself in for my depression and anxiety. They wanted to send me to the CBT program. I was like...I just finished it! Went home to suffer some more. I was losing more weight because everytime I ate, my anxiety got worse. Never will understand that and no one can explain that to me to this day. I would start shaking after I ate and anxiety is got very strong. It still happens. Months later I had a heart attack. 3 stents. I couldn't believe all this was happening. I finally found a great med provider and therapist. On a different liquid medication but my health has worsen. I have IBS so badly, lost a lot of hair. I'm taking my vitamins and protein but still losing hair. My mental state is worse then it ever was. I was handing and living with my mental health before surgery and now worse then ever. I had this surgery because I was 80 pds overweight. I had had my 1st heart attack before surgery and my primary doc said I should have the surgery. Worse decision of my life. Sorry for long story but I just want to know if anyone is having these same complications. I went back to my gastric surgeon and she said Gastric bypass doesn't affect your meds and because I had gained 8 pds back, she rudely said..."well you're absorbing something" and looked me up and down. At that point I was done with her. This has been a nightmare

    Not Eating enough?

I have a question. I had my surgery Dec 28. I had lost 60 pounds before talking to surgeon but I had hit such a plateau or I was only losing about a pound a week that I decided to try the surgery . The first three weeks I lost 28 pounds and doctor was thrilled. But since then I seem to be stuck again losing a pound or nothing each week. Ive been so concerned about the number of calories Im eating, but I realized I'm not getting even closee to the 120g of protein they wanted me to. I'm getting about half of that or maybe a little bit more, like 70-75g. My question is...could it be I'm not eating enough? Do I add protein to hit 120 and not be concerned with calories? Basically Im a bit frustrated because I'm back where i was before surgery only losing a pound a week. Looking for some insight.
