  4. Because 10 years after RNY I began regaining weight and with the band I wanted a more permanent option and remove the hardware.

    February Surgery ?

So kinda funny story. On my surgery day, I had to be there at 8:00 and surgery was scheduled at 10:00. They had me in a room in gown, IV placed, vital signs taken, questions asked and ready to go by 8:45. A little after my surgeon came in a "little early" for any last minute questions and after her, anesthesiologist came in with consent forms. So now it's 9:30 and I had 30 more minutes until "action". The longer I laid there, the more nervous I got. They didn't end up getting me until 10:30 so now I'm a nervous wreck. They take me to the OR room and had me scoot over to the operating table. The nurse (I think) had told me they would be starting meds in about 5 minutes but would be getting prepped and blah blah. I had a serious bout of nervousness then and I told her I think I'm not going to do this. Can I get up? I'll just walk out. I'm not ready for this! (I was so nervous) I even tried to sit up. I heard her whisper to some guy that was behind my head out of my vision to start the fentanyl "right now" and then she got right in my face and said No!!! You are not walking out of here! You have worked too hard on your pre-op diet and you made a good decision to do this...... And that's all I remember. I woke up later in recovery. I just thought it was a little funny and I'm very thankful for whoever that person was cause I was ready to run out of there!!!!
  7. Imaginegirl, like people have already said, you might have trouble finding a surgeon who still do bands. Also, long term about 50% of people who got the band 10 years ago are having difficulty and getting them removed. There are LOTS of us here who have had to get revisions done. I went with the band those 11 years ago with the same reason you did, I just wish I knew then what I know now, and I'd have gone straight to the bypass and not wasted 10 years fighting with my band. Of course it's your body, but do your homework and be sure the band is really what you want. Either way, good luck!

Orange Lily, I have great news for you; I would have classified myself as a cocoaholic before my sleeve surgery on 8/21/19. For reasons too long to go into, it took me nearly two years to get my surgery done but during that time I started using a Fitbit, watching what I ate and logging everything in the Fitbit app as well as my exercising which I started doing more faithfully. I cannot stress how immeasurably helpful this has been in my weight loss goal. Instead of two or three sodas a day, I restricted myself to one. During that two year delay in my surgery I lost 35 pounds and my PCP even asked me if I wanted to reconsider the surgery. What?! No way! I am having my surgery! Now for the good news; when I started my two week pre-surgery liquid diet, I stopped the soda completely and I haven’t had a soda since. One night my husband was having a coke and I asked for a sip (I was scared because it was a habit that I did not want to restart) ; one sip and I could barely swallow it because it was so sickenly sweet to me. 2/21/20 I passed my six month anniversary of my surgery and have lost another 79 pounds. I started at 315 pounds and I am getting ready to pass the 200 pound mark and enter the 100’s. I am at a point where I have less to lose than the weight I have already lost. Even if I never lost another pound, I would be happy with my results. I won’t lie though; eating is like Russian roulette; things I used to eat upset my stomach and I do get heartburn more often now but I am healthier than I have ever been in my life. I exercise for an hour five or six times a week. I started off with a recumbent bike (I have back issues that started my never ending weight issues about 20 years ago). I have added a Teeter Freestep (a marvelous invention that I fortunately found used and got for $125) and come spring I am investing I am investing in an above ground pool so that I can increase my exercise. I was the oldest of five patients and the heaviest that my surgeon operated on that morning. He has told me that of the five, I have lost the most weight and had the fewest complaints and that he thinks it’s because of my efforts prior to my surgery as well as after the surgery. So, good luck my friend on the exciting adventure that lies before you. By the way, I have gone from morbidly obese (a designation I despised to severely obese and I can’t wait until I leave that designation behind me.

  10. My scale victory is hitting 40lbs!!! I feel HUMAN again! My non-scale victory is silly, but made me feel great! I went to Wawa yesterday and ordered a spinach salad from the kiosk. For those unfamiliar with Wawa, you order at a kiosk, and they call your number when your order is ready. They have hoagies, meatball sandwiches, chicken fingers, etc. There were about 8-10 people waiting for their food, when the guy behind the counter looked over at me, held up the bag and said "spinach salad?" Of all the people waiting, I looked like the type of person who would order a spinach salad! I felt like I weighed 120lbs, and practically skipped out the door!! LOL!!!
  11. Spent the last 10 days trying to save Ginger but she died on me early morning yesterday, This is a example of why WLS is important - Due to her weight and lack of moving she caught a respiratory infection - The vets were all over it and so was i but due to her being obese she could not kick it! This is why fat people die of pneumonia alot also! So if you are on the fence take this as a warning! Now i have a 16 year old who is devastated at the loss, just venting! At least after 10 days of hell she can RIP
  12. I love the way Dr. Now explains this on My 600 Lb. Life - He says that surgery changes how much you can eat in one sitting, but it does not change the things you eat or the frequency of your eating. So if you graze on "bad" foods all day, you can still gain weight even following surgery. Your program likely wants you to start working on establishing those healthy habits early. Also, most programs want you to lose 10% of your excess body weight pre-surgery. I don't imagine any program expects perfection in this, so I wouldn't stress about it too much. On the other hand, the healthier you are going in for surgery, the better.
  13. I had the band placed in 2008. Had to have a slip fixed in 2010. Band removed in 2019, bypass done in 2020. Other than the slip in 2010 i didn't really have any problems with my band. I lost about 60-65 in the first 6 months, then maintained that loss +/- 5 lbs until 2019. Wasn't really having any issues, but decided I should do a check in with my band doctor, in April 2019 I had an upper gi done, they found that the band was causing problems with my esophagus and recommended removal. Removal and bypass done as 2 separate surgeries. I am 6 weeks post op from bypass and feeling great. I would not do the band again and go straight to bypass, bands fail after about 10 years, or sooner for some. Save time and $$$ do the bypass!! Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

    BACK PAIN

Hello Family, I woke up yesterday morning and had lower flank back pain bilaterally! First thing I thought was kidneys! I have been getting in at least 64 oz of water not counting my coffee in the morning! Only thing I think is the guilty culprit is I tried a Coke Zero and thought how amazing, it took me a whole day to get it down, so I had another one the next day and the next! They are 16.9 oz bottles but again it takes me all day to get it down. I just sip sip sip, my urine is a little darker than usually and so I am thinking that is the problem because as I am typing this, I realized it took me all day to sip the coke zero, I really wasn't getting in my water like I needed to be! I may drink 2 bottles of water and my coffee! See, there talking it out (typing) made me realize yes that is the problem! I go to my regular physician tomorrow, so cannot wait to see what my blood work is going to be like! I continue to take my multivitamins, calcium and thiamine! I am officially 10 weeks postop, 222 lbs 37.5".

    February Surgery ?

Honestly those first few days I felt like all I was doing was concentrating on trying to get hydrated and get some protein in! It has gotten better. I am 2 weeks out tomorrow, and after 10 days my doctor's office allow a very limited amount of "smooth" foods; egg whites, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, really ripe banana, apple sauce, cream of wheat, fat free refried beans. Today I actually went over 600 calories! It included a protein shake made with Fairlife milk which was 210 calories, but is also over 30g of protein in 8 oz! And I drank it in about a 1/2 hour! Hang in there DB. It gets a bit better every day.
  16. Hi there, Newbie here. My surgery is March 10 and I'm starting the liver reduction diet tomorrow. I have a few questions... Should I start taking bariatric vitamins now? Should I reevaluate my anxiety meds due to the possibility of nonabsorption? What should I bring for recovery? (My surgery's out of state) What should I expect as far as mobility immediately after surgery? Thanks in advance!! Amanda
  17. Hi and welcome! Congrats on listening to your body and noting the cues it's giving you!!! Waaaahhhhoooooooo! That is totally part of how we come to have "light bulb moments" with the signals our bodies send us! Most likely what's happening for many reasons is: The food is very processed so it hits your blood stream as glucose faster which causes a higher insulin spike. When your blood glucose falls, then you get hungry again. And it can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 3-6 hours depending on the food source. Right? The less processed a food is and the more dense, dry and solid it is, the longer is stays in our new tools, the more work and energy the body expends to send it out of our tums and into our gut, and the slower we digest the food in our gut, the slower the broken down macro nutrient takes to get the glucose that can be wrung out of it, into our blood stream. Slow is good! Liquids = super fast Mechanically ground = super fast Solids, low carb, low calorie dense, high fiber = very slow or at least slower Solids, dense, lean, no "lube", low fat = slowest and ideal Sorry to geek out on you! (I ate eggs and sausage with avocado and pico at 10:45 this morning and I've yet to eat again cuz have been full all day. ) Tonight I'm eating a king's meal: steak, asparagus, avo & tom salad.

New Here and Waiting on Surgery

Am I reading this correctly— you’ve lost 123 lbs since your surgery on 1/16/20 and It’s only 2/23/20. I figure you meant you had the surgery in 2019. Anyway, a 123 pound loss is phenomenal. Congratulations!

    April 2020

I encourage you to do so. My employer kept changing insurance carriers the last two years I worked before my retirement. During that time, I worked with my PCP and watched what I ate and exercised. I was not able to get my surgery until after I became eligible for Medicare coverage. I had lost 35 pounds on my own before my surgery on 8/21/19. I just passed my six month anniversary from surgery and I am down an additional 78 pounds. My starting weight in 2017 was 315 pounds. At surgery I weighed 280. I am now down to 201. I can’t believe that I am one pound shy of being less than 200 pounds. I haven’t weighed so little since my twenties!

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday Saturday, Feb 22 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1.33 yrs PO Sleeve / 113.4 lbs ---------------------------------------- Don't know whats going on...had another day of slimies I don't know if I am getting the slimies because I'm not eating much, or I'm not eating much because I have the slimies. I did just come back from Costco shopping this AM, so there is now a drawer full of salad greens & other good stuff so maybe if I get back to my regular diet and start eating "normally" again, the scale will stop going down. The Kids says to just eat some cookies. Mr. says cut back on the coffee. I like the Kid's suggestion better. 😎 ---------------------------------------- 9:00am - black coffee w/ stevia 12:30pm - 2.5 oz pan fried brussel sprouts in bacon fat + 1/2 package shiratake noodles + 2.5 oz grilled chicken + 1 tsp garlic chili oil * ate a few bites of this * 5:00pm - * 1/2 the leftovers of 12:30pm meal * + 2 oz chicken adobo 8:00pm - * the rest of the leftovers of 12:30pm meal * + 1/2 cup canned corn niblets + 3 oz grilled chicken + 1 tsp garlic chili oil 10:00pm - 1/2 cup cashew milk --------------------------------------- Totals: 560 cals - 47g Protein - 24g NET carbs - 26g fat

    January 2020 Surgery Folks

Hey y’all!! MIA all week again- it’s all I can do during the work week to come home, do a load of laundry and cook dinner for my 9 & 10 yo. Whew Mama is TIRED! I wanted to give y’all a little update on my progress- I can’t get on my iPad for some reason so I can’t change my ticker but I’m down to 232.2- woot! That’s 43.2# so far! This week was slower but I’m eating and drinking more- still loosing about half a lb a day so that’s good. A NSV is that I went to the Goodwill on Monday ( $.99 cent day at my GW) and bought a bunch of size 18 khaki pants- typical art teacher attire- and THEY ZIPPED THIS MORNING! I was a size 24 Jan 2!! Hekka Yeah! Finally I had a GNO last night- we went to a local pub and then to see Mama Mia our on by our local theater club. I didn’t drink but I ordered their naked mugs (real chicken breast cup into cubes). We were in the nosebleeds- the theater is super old so during segregation it was the “black section” and the seats are TINY dingy and HOT! But I fit!!!!!! I’m attaching a picture of me in my SIZE LARGE dress that I wore (not XXL like 2 months ago!!!) Also attached is a comparison pic- Jan 2 to last night. Total difference!!

    February Surgery ?

I'm struggling with the clear liquids. I don't really like the crystal light, but that might help you if you like the taste. I made a pitcher of it with about 50% more water and I find it ok watered down. The other things I am doing for clear liquids are; Herbal tea with a little stevia (I like mint, ginger and a Yogi kind called Egyptian Licorice), bone broth (Swanson, chicken bone broth, also gives you some protein and is a nice break from all the sweet, sweet, sweet) and frozen sugar free pops. Someone had recommended Hint water, I got the watermelon and I really like that, I had a 16 oz bottle of that over about 2 1/2 hours yesterday. It just takes so looooong. I tried the protein water, but I could not stand it. I tried watering it down, I tried freezing it, I tried freezing it watered down, I can't get it in without retching. I am amazed at how tired I am by walking still! I have been trying to walk every hour, but I can't do much more than 10 minutes before I feel really weary. Hopefully we will get stronger every day! I am glad I have one more week off from work. I was going to try to go back after 2 weeks, but I think just for stamina I need another week. I love reading your updates! Onward and upward (or...downward I hope.)
  23. No, these were all sale items I had found when I was a size 10/12 thinking let me get them and just see! I found an absolutely gorgeous navy blue couture dress that is a true size 6. Now I know I'm smaller - as we know the designer lines are accurate. So excited to share the fruits of my labor these past few weeks. I desperately needed to replace all the basics... dresses, tops, bottoms, belts etc. Mission accomplished! ;]

    Pre-OP diet ugh!

My surgery is Thursday the 27th. I have been doing the 2 week pre-op diet. It is soooo hard. I have had protein shakes, daily, jello, cottage cheese ect. that is called for. Last week when I started I make this chicken santa fe soup all the time for my family( a family favorite)that consist of chicken breast, black beans, onion, taco seasoning, chicken broth and tomato juice! Since my diet consist of up to 2 cups of tomato juice daily and unlimited chicken broth I would eat the broth part of the soup that was more flavorful than just having tomato juice or chicken broth by itself. I have a very active job sometimes walking anywhere from 6-10 thousand steps a day, so this restriction has been hard. I have had 3 premier protein shakes a day, the soup broth, and 2 cups of cottage cheese a day mixed with jello and cheated with a little sugar free cool whip on top. Today I have felt very weak and very tired and instead of having 3 shakes I had 2 but I ate a little bit of deli ham. No bread or anything just maybe a couple of ounces. I felt like I just had to have something I was starving. I really hope I haven't sabotaged my surgery. I have also been in the bathroom a lot today to the point there is just water coming out today. I don't know what to think. I feel like I have already had the magnesium citrate and that is not until Wednesday? IDK what to think?
