  1. I'm about 80 hours post surgery following a repair on Petersen's hernia. Had a CT scan Monday which showed abnormalities (60% or more of these hernias don't show in ct). So op was diagnostic and therapeutic both. They found most of my bowel had migrated through a hole in Petersen's area. Was lucky it had not caused more problems- have had intermittent stomach pain for six months. Anyway - reason for posting: don't ignore abdo pain after rny surgery. Weightloss can cause holes in membrane that encloses bowel. If this trapped bowel becomes strangulated (loses blood supply) can result in bowel resection - bits cut off - colostomy or even septicemia and death. They don't show on x-ray, often not on CT either. The bowel slips in and out of the holes making symptoms intermittent. So, abdo pain especially when accompanied by bloating or vomiting needs to be reported to bariatric team. Normal docs won't have a clue. A&e docs told me I had ibs in January. I'm glad I had my surgery, glad I'm a healthy weight, but my tendency to assume I'm ok and not make a fuss could have had dire consequences.

    Medical Alert Bracelet

This is SO true! I had to have my band emptied in August so they could insert an NG tube. Thankfully, the surgeon treating me was my bariatric surgeon's partner so he was more than aware of what I needed. But I actually had to have it inserted while awake (not pleasant) so I could swallow as they inserted it, making it less of a risk of them accidentally puncturing my stomach because of the band. I shudder to think what may have happened if I'd had a surgeon who wasn't also a bariatric surgeon and didn't know all this. Ever since, I have a Lap Band card I carry behind my driver's license. I figure if I'm unconscious and someone is going for my ID they'll see the Lap Band card, too (but I still think the medical alert bracelet is a great idea)
  3. I searched my insurance company's database of therapists "in network" (Aetna). In the database it listed each therapist's areas of expertise. The therapist I chose had "eating disorders" listed as an area of expertise. I had actually started seeing her well before I decided to have surgery in order to heal some childhood scars (which incidently were tied to my emotional overeating), but I knew when I chose her that my head issues with eating were something that needed addressing. Fortunately, she had treated bariatric patients before so she was able to really help me through the process. We did a lot of work prior to surgery to get me ready for my new life. It was very eye-opening for me. She helped me connect a lot of eating issues to personal experiences and learn how to adopt new behaviors when emotions take over. And, an area where I didn't expect to need help but she was really instrumental was in learning to accept attention again as I lost the weight. It was very difficult for me at first when men began to actively check me out/hit on me. I felt very "exposed" for lack of a better word. I quit my weekly visits two months ago and I am still going strong on my own. If you still have questions, feel free to ask. I'm happy to answer!

    Full Liquid Diet ?

My doctor is requiring me to drink 4 Protein shakes a day (Bariatric Fusion). Other than that all I can have is tons of Water and Crystal like or something like it. I'm allowed one cup of coffee a day with no sugar. Not enthused but it's only for 6 days.

  6. I tried so far Chobani and Fage greek yogurt, and I didn't like them The flavor is disgusting ( to me ) even if I add to the plain one Torani SF syrup or splenda. Is there any other "bariatric friendly " yogurts that I can try out there? I know the greek yogurt is high in protein Which one is your favorite?
  7. I have United Health Care and weight watchers and individual dieting did count for me. with weight watchers your progress is tracked online all i had to do was log onto my online account and show my progress. the purpose of the 6 month program is to track your progress and dcoument a medical advised diet. Through my insurance we have Bariatric Resources who handled everything along with my Dr's office. I would reconmend you call your insurance and see whats offered. I had to submitt 5 year weights and complete the 6 moth program. when i submitted to insurance on june 20th they called me 2 days later approving me and I was givin a surgery date GOOD LUCK!
  8. So I am coming up on my 1yr mark. While I am happy that I've lost 142lbs from HW in Feb 2018, 93lbs since sleeve, my weight loss has virtually been stalled. My macros are have been on point(1200-1400 cals, 90-125g protein, 50-60g carbs per day) while walking 4mi six days per week plus 1.5hrs lifting at gym 4-5 days per week. Per Apple watch, I am burning 4500-5500 cals per day depending on workouts but yet scale has not moved in more than 2lbs in two months. Frustrated as heck but I haven't let off the gas pedal. My personal goal is to lose another 35lbs while getting by BF 15-20%. Definitely have much more noticeable definition in arms, shoulders, and legs but yet scale not moving. Could overtraining be the reason for my stall??? Am I just not able to get enough calories in to keep metabolism burning?? Have I reached my loss period??? I am afraid if I lower cals, I'll start to lose my muscle gains. Any trainers out here with experience in bariatric surgery? Anyone go through this??

    Getting started

are you trying to get it approved by insurance? If you haven't been to a doctor in 5 years it may cause you issues. you need to contact your insurance and see what the factors are regarding approval of Bariatric Surgery. If you are not going thru insurance then it shouldn't matter.
  10. So so much comes from b vitamins! I suggest a b complex I think Bariatric advantage has one, and lots of companies have a sublingual b12

    Calcium Chews

I have the same issue with the bariatric advantage calcium chews. It's takes me forever to eat them, it's like a meal, and they upset my stomach. I have been looking on Amazon and barimelts has a calcium tablet that melts in your mouth and had good reviews. I am going to try that one.

    Worried :(

The way my doctors office is billing my procedure is with an out of network facility and in network surgeon. It ends up costing me less that way. My paperwork was sent to insurance on Friday the 13th (hope that's not a sign) and I called yesterday to confirm that had received it and they had. They said they received it yesterday the 16th and that it usually takes 15 days to render a decision. I got an email this afternoon from my insurance stating that my company has made some changes to our medical plan. One of the changes being that bariatric surgery can only take place at an in network center of excellence starting April 1. Doc office wants to schedule me for a March surgery, but I'm just worried that something is going to happen that would push me into April :-/ Sorry so long. Just venting.

    Drinking water..

Didn't your doc explain this to you? It's one of the main things that bariatric patients should knowif he did. I don't remember. O............K.......
  15. OK, met with the bariatric surgeon today. I really like him! Dr. Hargroder in Baton Rouge, LA. He said one view of my films it looks like a "normal" sleeve, but on another view, it looks like it is larger from the back. He said he knows of possibly two reasons I may be having trouble. If my sleeve surgeon did not dissect the stomach far enough, it would have left a bulb-like protrusion on the back side, which he thinks he is seeing on the film. This would mean I have a much too big pouch. The other problem my be the hernia repair surgery he (Dr. Hargroder) performed on me when I had my band. He said it was a Nisson fundoplication (sp?) in which the upper stomach is wrapped around the esophagus. My sleeve doctor may not have unwound it and just "sleeved" (stapled) around it making a larger pouch. He also may have unwound it, cut/stapled the stomach and not wound it again - also resulting in a larger pouch and explaining why the hernia came back. So, he proposes that he look at it while removing my gallbladder and repairing my hiatal hernia. If it looks too big, he will resection it - just like the original surgery. But it would have to be pretty big to have enough room to do this. The other possibility is he may be able to do a pliacation (pleat the upper, enlarged pouch - fold it over on itself). He really won't know until he get in there to see what was done and if it looks "unusual". I think I'm having it done on 8/2 or 8/4. They will confirm with me tomorrow. Thanks, Monica

    I give up

I am so happy you found some answers. I too have been more proactive in my own health for a while now. Researching online and reading has really helped me solve some of my own issues. I get very frustrated at drs for their lack of care and concern. The ones here make you wait 3-4 hrs to see them then walk in the room, barely even make eye contact, then leave the room, usually before you've had time to think of any questions to ask. So 3-4 hrs waiting to get less than 5 mins of their time. Ridiculous!!!! The way your dr treated you is horrible. That was abuse if you ask me. Even if there wasn't a med affecting your loss, there is NO reason to treat a patient in that manner. Then to laugh at you?????? OMG I wanna slap him so bad!! He knows you had this done, he is treating you and one of the first things he should of done was look at your meds. I am truly appalled. I am so sorry you went through this, especially at a time you were probably already feeling bad and blaming yourself as it was. You trusted his skills and knowledge, and as drs we go in assuming they care about their patients. I am seriously sitting here questioning HIS sanity and mental stability. To be rude, uncaring, then downright cruel is unexcusable! I hope you are able to report him, but if not I would definitely confront him, tell him what you discovered, tell him you think his behavior was unacceptable, and I would insist there be another medical person there as witness so anything he says back to you, you will have a witness. I would try not to be emotional, use an even tone of voice so he can't try to tell anyone you were a raving looney so he can put the blame on you. Then I would never see him again and tell him you are going to tell everyone you know, go to the newspaper and media to expose him and if their are websites that he's on that will allow you to leave a review, do it!! No wonder so many of us go to Mexico!! Not just cost but the arrogance of some drs is sickening. Bariatric patients generally already have low self esteem problems, without jerks like him to contribute to that. I am so p.o'd!!!!!! Sorry for my outburst lol
  17. A friend and I attended a weight loss metting at Emory University last week. I enjoyed the meeting and it was so GREAT to talk with other people at the forum as it made me realize how much in common many of us have. I was so pepped up after the meeting because one of the speakers mentioned United Health Care (UHC) and how great they were about providing coverage for Bariatric surgery. I work for the State of Georgia and I have the State Health Plan which consists of different plans you can choose from. I was so glad that I had chosen UHC. To my disappointment, I contacted UHC the next day thinking I was on my way and being one step closer to having the surgery when I was told that my plan does not cover weight loss surgery. I had researched the website prior to contacting UHC but under my plan benefits it said nothing about whether or not the plan covers the surgery. I'm not sure where the person that I spoke with found the information but it was not listed anywhere that I could see. My best friend has Aetna and he found out that his plan offered bariatric benefits. So needless to say, I am kind of down that we will not be able to go through this together. My friend stated something to the effect that Aetna told him that there had been some new law that the state of Georgia passed in recent years regarding bariatric surgery and insurance paying for it. It was a good law but I haven't been able to find anything regarding this law. First, is there anyone who works for the State of Georgia, particularly Department of Human Resources (DHR) who has had bariatric surgery and UHC paid for it????? Secondly, does anyone know about this law that was supposed to have been passed????? I would appreciate any suggestions/advice you could provide. Thanks!!!!
  18. I tested positive after surgery (removed stomach was tested) in Mid March, bariatric surgeon wanted me to wait a little while before starting treatment. I started today - seven days (twice a day am and pm) of 2 x amoxil 500mg, 1 nexium 20mg and 1 x klacid 500mg.

    Manage Sleep Apnea

I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea during pre op testing and was worried that would delay my surgery date since the tech told me they want to get it under control before I undergo surgery. Fortunately, my surgeon said it wouldn't make a difference and that the RNY would more than likely resolve it, which I'm hoping it does. Now I'm wondering if I should have gone ahead and got the machine since my out-of-pocket expenses have been met for the year. But I'm trying to be optimistic and believe I'm not going to need it in the future and hope the same for you. Anyone here can say their apnea was cured following surgery/weight loss? Oh, and I ran across this article after my diagnosis. Yikes!!! Just another reason to get the Bariatric surgery. Bummed out by new development

I've had atrial fibrilation since 2003 and have had 2 ablations. The first ablation helped quite a bit for about 2 years (I still had them, but not as regular) and then they came back more frequently. I had a 2nd ablation in September of 2006. This again lessed the frequency of my episodes but did not clear up my problem. With the last ablation, I had the procedure performed on a Monday morning and wasn't released until Thursday night. The doctor also felt that bariatric surgery would be beneficial. My surgeon was aware of my problem and told me that as long as I wasn't having an episode at the time of surgery that there wouldn't be a problem. I normally go 3-4 weeks inbetween episodes and we scheduled it about 1 week after one. Things went fine. I've concluded that my atrial fibrilation is just something that I'll have to live with. Which many people do. It can be very frustrating. When I have an episode it lasts anywhere from four to fourteen hours in length. I just try and relax and stay down till it passes. Good luck with both your lapband and your atrial fibrilation.
  23. When I was there I met a lady who had to go to OR again to have a few staples loosened as it seems they were too tight at the entrance of the stomach. It was not a complication but something that could make her transition to solids a bit more uncomfortable. Dr. Kelly had it done without any additional costs and she was very happy with his professionalism, honesty and care. What I was told was that if the complication relates to the surgery they will take care of you at no additional cost. You can give them a call and ask these questions, put some case scenarios and see what they say. In my experience, they honor their words and it does not even have to be in writing. As for checking complications, I think there is no registry for this. What you can do is to check his credentials as a certified bariatric surgeon both in Mexico and USA. I did that and was satisfied with the results. I do not have the links here now but I got them from wasabubblebutt blog. You can do a search for her name here and go from there. I am sure you will be very satisfied.

    Plant based diet and sleeve....

I am a big fan of the plant-based diet approach. The bariatric gospel on the other hand, tends to condemn that but I think it is a very doable thing. In fact, there is a bariatric surgeon on YouTube who has a video called "eat your veggies first" where in he makes the argument that we have always eaten the Protein first, and if we can get in the habit of eating my vegetables for us we will be healthier and be more likely to keep the weight off. I think in the very beginning, vegetarian diet could be very challenging because the restriction is so significant due to swelling. But I would say 6 to 9 months out, it's quite feasible. Plant based diet and sleeve....

Check out this bariatric surgeon's vids https://www.youtube.com/user/DrMatthewWeiner/videos He pushes a high veggie diet. Now, veggies usually aren't on the diet progression until several weeks after surgery, so be sure to follow your surgeon's diet progression plan until you're fully healed and released to a full diet, but I think this guy has some good advice for long-term weight maintenance.
