  1. I am just going to reply to this topic with an update in case anyone searching comes across this post. I did discuss it with my Bariatric Surgeon and they did not see a problem with it (which honestly still surprises me) but when I saw my Oncologist he just assumed we were putting it off a year and I was FINE with that. So I am seeing my Oncologist again next month and will be scheduling my uptake for most likely late August or Early September (more than a year post op) because I will have to do the Low Iodine Diet for a few weeks before my uptake. The Low Iodine diet is a whole different can of worms. So anyone who is seeing them in the future that is going through what I am, please feel free to reach out to me here and I can discuss my experiences with Radiation Uptakes and Low Iodine Diets after RNY with you.

How much Calcium citrate is everyone taking?

My vitamins per my RD: 1 bariatric multi or 2 regular multis 1500mg calcium citrate 500mg b12 sublingual 18mg iron The following is not for everyone--just cuz of my bloodwork right now: 2000mg d3 100mg b complex (1-2 per week) 400mg magnesium citrate
  3. I am breaking out as well with acne, by my chin, forehead, cheeks, eyebrows, pretty much all over my face and they hurt to the touch. I thought that I was allergic to the bariatric vitamins but my dietitian said that my hormones are out of wack due to the surgery.
  4. Yikes. Corn syrup and sugar listed as ingredients #2 and #4... the high sugar content could definitely be to blame! I’d look around for some lower sugar choices. I personally prefer Premier Protein. I’ve also ordered the Syntrex Nectar variety pack from the Bariatric Pal store and they were pretty tasty IMO.

    Journey To VSG (NYC Edition)

Congratulations on your journey. I had my surgery at Mt. Sinai on April 29th and I can't say enough about my positive experience. Wishing you good luck and hope you attend the next bariatric meeting on July 8th. Susie

    Crunchy salty snacks

I buy the protein snacks on Bariatric Pal and at the GNC store. I like the protein BBQ chips and I'm expecting a delivery today of the protein cheese puffs to try. Check them out.
  7. In order to get so fat that you need bariatric surgery you need to have a some kind of disordered eating behaviour. Whether that's legitimate food addiction or long term poor eating habits. This eating behaviour develops ovet a long period of time and is a powerful psychological influence. A calorie deficit diet is hard for anyone, let alone those with disordered eating behaviour. Just because we've had the surgery and removed the physiological stimulus to over eat or make poor food choices, doesn't mean the thoughts and behaviour change. It's HARD. 8. Hello bariatric friends!! I am traveling to Tijuana on Monday, June 17th to have the VSG on Tuesday the 18th. Wondering if anyone else will be traveling during that time? I think my head is full to capacity with pre-op and post-op research, as well as youtube vlogs, vsg blogs, and forums!!! But it's finally getting close and feeling REAL!

    Help! Thighs are dying!

Giiiirl. 5 days of weight training is excessive at 2.5 mos. I have been working with an amazing trainer for 4 months. He is a 7 time State champion power-lifter. I do weight training/HIIT TWICE a week, a spin class, and a yoga class. I am about to add an additional spin class. I am 7 months out. He says this is perfect. I also said I was going to do spin class right before yoga and he said that is too much and unnecessary for a single day. You need time between HIIT and resistance training for your muscles to heal. And there is NO WAY you're getting enough protein to support the kind of exercise you're doing. My bariatric dietitian AND the trainer both said I need to be at 100g of protein per day for the stuff I am doing - and it sounds like you are doing much more. Your body will just devour itself, including those muscles you're working on. My trainer also wants me at 100g of carbs per day (although he isn't getting that just yet, lol). It's great that you love exercising, but orthorexia is a thing and can be a replacement for overeating so just be careful. And maybe find a new gym or a new trainer... dude sounds like an a*****e. There has been two times in the last four months that my thighs or calves hurt so bad for about 3 days I could barely walk. But it was new exercises and when I was doing it, I wasn't struggling. So now he and I work around it. I actually tried the calf exercise again on Monday after a long hiatus, and have no issues this time. Nothing you do should ever cause actual pain.

    Feeling weak

And you undoubtedly are at a Calorie Deficit, this is your body's way of saying " For Gods sake, girl, you just had Major Surgery- sit us down before you topple over!" let Bronto- Grandma and Bronto- sissy help a little, obviously they ❤ a whole bunch. My daughter , the RD , short for Rotten Daughter, lives 6/10ths of a mile from me, wouldn't turn her hand to help me, there is one of those in every family, and I had the horrid luck to birth Mine! I no longer plot revenge, Karma is going to get her and it may be soon. Already wrote my Death Notice/ Eulogy for our local newspaper, when you're 72 and facing surgery you think about such things. Anyway it says at the end" She is also survived by Mrs_____. her daughter, with whom she was estranged at the time of her death." And the publisher of our Local Newspaper, I graduated from High School with her older sister, so it is cleared it will be published just That Way! My son, the Tomkitten knows just where to locate it and has promised to submit it. And it will also not say "Blankety- blank Funeral Home is honored to serve my family" I dealt with these people for all of my family's funerals, okay people but they took every drop of Life Insurance money coming, not a nicety but a business with substantial profit. Late hubby thought he was leaving Tomkitten and I sitting pretty, nope, had to keep on working to keep us fed, so nice as things look, IT IS A Racket, pure and clear. And day by day you are going to get stronger, more healthy, less "OMG WHAT DID I LET MYSELF IN FOR? ", the sun will shine, the birdies tweet tweet once again, this I Do Promise! It takes a while,to Be the Very Best and to Feel the Very Best! And I pray for everyone on Bariatric Pal, even the ones who didn't ask ME,to. Figure that will be between Me and GOD in the long run!
  11. And another Scale Victory- I now weigh over 50 pounds less than my son and heir to my miniscule fortune, he is so ego- struck and peeved He now says it's TIME for him to seek Bariatric Surgery for himself, does not like the fact I have an BMI of 31, although he is a couple of inches taller his is 38 and he may have still enough Co- Morbidities- even at his younger age- for Insurance to cover it! Told him I will support you, if that is your decision- but it is between my surgeon, because that is who he would wish to have- and Himself. This is the one thing Mama can't do for YOU!
  12. Frustr8

    Anxiety

And you are not SHRINKING from Surgery, it's that things settle down before your operation,LOL, they kept shortening ME and I did'nt feel a thing! Once upon a TIme Frustr8 was one puffy Hairstyle under 6 Feet Tall, a fine yet. Obese specimen of. WomanFlesh. Now I did expect to be A LITTLE SHORTER, after All , Years and Menopause may have taken a Toll, but 5 Foot 8 Inches, I felt Robbed! And I had struggled and struggled to lose some Pre- Surgical Weight so they,Would See,how Sincere I was! Now your Re-rmeasure is going to benefit you enough to make Insurance pay for Your Surgery but it Made Me feel like A Big Fat Slob! And This Magic with their Measuring Tape and Scales gave me a BMI of 51.6, that's OMG LADY, HOW CAN YOU STILL STAND UP AND WALK?-hood. I would have gotten down and Crawled Out of there on my Hands and Knees- except for the fact,i have had 2 artificial knees implanted , they don't bend too good anymore and I Feared it might take a ForkLift to get me back up! But it all worked Out, I went forward, got my Surgery in a little over 3 months, why So Short?I had completed Another Bariatric Program not Once but Twice and then after skimming off as much money as they could as well as Co-Pays because the insurance I had then demanded I chip in. And then Their Surgeon, who honestly didn't,care That Much for, got Professional Cold Feet and REFUSED to give me my Surgery. The Good Thing about that tangled Mess? I got to keep All That Credit, for all the Specialties I had visited, rather like Credit for Time Served in a Legal Court when they are jailing YOU! So all I had to do was 1more Psychological a piece of 🎂 Cake, meet with their Dietician, an Exercise Physiologist, the Head Nurse- Practioner, then the Surgeon, he did his personal PreSurgical exam, got fitted and promised to faithfully, use my CPap, because I knew already I had Sleep Apnea, the Heredity Kind (Thanks Daddy!) And then on SEPTEMBER 5,2018 I hot,my RNY and was on my way to a Better Life# And God Bless Medicare, by this time I was older and Retired and they gave me No Hoops to,Jump Through, everybody agreed THIS IS GOING TO MAKE FRUSTR8 A HEALTHIER PERSON AGAI, HEY IT MIGHT JUST,SAVE HER LIFE! And it did, and, more I am 116 pounds lighter and, although I had so bumps, hills and curves in my Personal Weight Loss Journey, like the Old Song Said ; Everything G9nna,Be All-Right!" Yours may have different parts to,it, that's Okay-we are all Different,People, but it will be Just Right for YOU and bottom line, That is What We All Want! So God Bless, dont, let Worry take the Joy out of Your Days and I'm always lurking around here somewhere if you Want to Talk.😛🌈

To Tell or NOT to Tell

I could have written your post word for word before my surgery last August. My decision was to only tell my family and a couple of very close friends. I work with two of my friends that I told but made them promise not to tell anyone else at work. I'm very happy with my decision. I've lost 90 lbs now. People at work started noticing a couple months ago, asking what I've been doing. My response has been that I'm logging all my food, not eating the often times 3000 calories, focusing on protein to keep me full, reducing carb intake, and exercising (that last part isn't entirely true and I really need to get going on that). I also said that I'm quickly approaching the age that my Dad was when he died of a heart attack which was related to his obesity (all true). When I had the surgery last summer I didn't tell anyone at work what type it was. One person asked and I just said I'm not comfortable talking about it but thanks for asking. A few weeks ago a different coworker point blank asked me if I had bariatric surgery. Completely caught me off guard and I felt it was kinda rude. I looked her straight in the eye and lied. I said no, then gave my spiel about logging food etc. Best of luck on your journey!

    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

Hello June Siblings! My RNY was yesterday. I didn’t know quite what to expect as my last surgery was 35 yrs ago. Very pleasantly surprised. The Bariatric unit staff were great no matter their role on this team. Got home this evening around 6PM. now having my last full liquid for the day. I was given a Scopolamine patch in Pre-Op yesterday AM. Will take it off tomorrow. So far no nausea. Have been walking as prescribed. Will be glad when all the gas is gone. 🤣🤣

    New Here

Hi, I’m new here as well. I found this site looking for some information on people’s personal experiences with bariatric weight loss surgery. I was just approved for the Molina bariatric program today. I know it’s a long road ahead before the actual gastric sleeve surgery. Just curious about what I should be expecting next step.

    The Maintenance Thread

Right now I just eat pretty freely. The only things I do that are "bariatric" is weigh myself everyday I'm home, and log everything. I also inadvertently IF a lot of days because I don't get around to eating until later in the day. *Required disclaimer I appear to an outlier. I had an easier surgery, easier recovery, lost weight quickly despite being "off plan" frequently and rarely exercising. I totally recognize I've been incredibly lucky. I don't post a lot about it on here because I don't want people to hate me 😂. I am also fully prepared to adjust my diet and exercise when I start to regain. I believe I'm still in my honeymoon period, and this can't last forever.

Help! Weight gain probs. Snack suggestions.

I also said “ I will never gain it back” and had a 16 pound gain my third year. (I worked it off) Weight gain can mess with your head. You caught it before it became a major regain. You can get this back down. Some of us can have a piece of cholate and stop. I know myself, I keep temptation out of the house. Maintaining I indulge within reason. Some of us do the pouch reset (liquid progression to real food) It’s a good way to restart healthy habits again. Some of us go back to bariatric basics.( Real food stage, Log food and stay within your weight loss calorie/macros, hydrate and exercise) Others change diet plans. (keto, intermittent fasting, vegan etc) Its finding what works for you. Whatever diet you choose; Logging has been the tool that helped me get the weight off. Here are a few threads that may help: Weight loss group challenge to keep you motivated. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425758-june-2019-challenge/?tab=comments#comment-4781757 If you choose intermittent fasting here is a group of people that can help https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/419144-intermittent-fasting-daily-menuresultsaccountability/?page=173&tab=comments#comment-4780742 Mental Weight loss battles thread. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425354-the-importance-of-doing-the-head-work/?tab=comments#comment-4776743 Wish you the best. 19. In the year leading up to my surgery in May 2018 I was diagnosed with COPD by a pulmonologist based on pulmonary function testing. I have always had some seasonal asthma but this was much worse. I could not take a shower or walk across the street without wheezing/shortness of breath. I was placed on 3 daily medications (Breo, Spiriva and Singulair) and still had major issues. I was also treated by a spine physiologist for severe back pain...it was to the point that I actually let this doctor inject my spine on both sides due to the severe pain that occurred anytime I was upright for more than a few minutes. I had to drag a bar stool into the kitchen to cook a meal and my husband was looking into a walker with a seat for me since I could not go anywhere due to the pain. I can honestly say that I thought I would be dead in a year... Fast forward to today, one year after surgery. I am still working toward my goal but my health and life have improved greatly. I am off ALL COPD/asthma medications with symptoms so rare that I have used my inhaler about 3 or 4 times in the last year. I can do anything I want with no breathing issues. My pulmonologist is AMAZED and he is referring other patients to bariatrics as appropriate. I can do a brisk, 2 1/2 mile walk outdoors with no issues. My back does not hurt AT ALL even if I am up and walking all day. I can easily get on and off the motorcycle that I so enjoy riding with my husband. I have not taken so much as a tylenol in a year since surgery. I am currently 61 years old with no health issues, no medication other than OTC allergy meds and my MV and calcium supplements and I feel 10 years younger than I did a year ago. As a nurse practitioner, I would not have believed any of this if I had not experienced it myself. Having this surgery is the best thing that I have ever done for myself.

10 years out and Almost back to pre-op weight

Many have come back and posted after weight regain. You are not alone. Your options are to have a surgery revision or Get back on track. The only way to know if you stretched your sleeve is to have it diagnosed by a surgeon. Many sleeves have less restriction years out, but our stomachs are not back to full size. I can hold more food volume. I had to find strategies to fill the extra space and satisfy hunger with out regain. Many people confuse grazing/ eating around your surgery with stretching. Grazing is eating many small meals healthy or unhealthy choices that total over your weight loss/maintaining calories. When you eat small meals, you don’t feel your surgery restriction. The calories quickly add up and you will gain weight. When you eat around your surgery the sleeve will no longer works. If you get back to basics and control what you eat again, you can start losing weight. Getting back to basics and finding the right mindset and discipline is not as easy as it sounds years out. I would suggest getting a counselor and dietician to support you through all this. Bariatric Basics. Eat your bariatric real food plan - Weigh your food on a scale, log your food in a food app,(my fitness pal or baritastic) drink a minimum of 64 oz of water, exercise. **stay within your weight loss calories and macros ** You can ask a dietician for a meal plan and calorie range. Other people here that are years out are willing to share their plans. I'm five years out with the sleeve. Some do the pouch reset suggested above. Some find it too restrictive. Real food plan can be more satisfying.

I'm going with Bariatric Choice all-in-one multivitamins. They were on "the list" and the discounts for bulk orders was good. https://www.bariatricchoice.com/bariatric-choice-chewable-bariatric-multivitamin-tropical-citrus.html I'm thinking about ordering an additional Biotin vitamin though for hair and nails but haven't decided. Does anyone have suggestions of multivitamins? My nutritionist said centrum, flintstones, or a bariatric specific one. I'm looking for a bariatric one that has all that I need in one pill if possible. Any suggestions?

Thank you all so very much for the heads up, will have to let you all know how it goes! The receptionist gave him the phone, I could hear her telling him, "bariatric patient wanting to schedule, can you take the call?" He responded, "Yes, I'll take it!" That to me was personal within itself! Again thank you all so much!
