Tell me about your initial consultation
Jeanniebug replied to SemperVeritas's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
We discussed my surgical history and family history. We discussed my medical issues. We discussed my current diet and exercise (at that point in time). We discussed my previous weight loss efforts. He asked me if I had been doing any research and if I had a particular surgery in mind. I told him I was interested in the RnY gastric bypass - he agreed and thought that surgery would be the best for me. He gave me a print out of predictions for my comorbidities and weight loss, for the first year. He told me what tests he would want me to have, before surgery. I needed a mammogram, an EGD, and a psych eval. He felt I was a low-risk for apnea, so I didn't need a sleep study. I'm also already under the care of a cardiologist and had fairly recently had an echocardiogram - so I didn't need to repeat that. Because I had already done a ton of research, I really didn't have any questions, so the appointment was fairly quick. After my appointment, the receptionist scheduled all of my nutrition visits for the following 6 months, and my pre-op appointment (the final appointment with the surgical team before surgery). -
6 weeks post op depressed
Leo segovia replied to Kourtneybedwell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Surgery day I was 250 lbs I'm starting week 7 and I am down 17 lbs . I have stalled for 3 weeks and I think I just might be coming out of it. Having such low calorie intake and body is still in healing mode. ( Body uses energy to heal ) . Make us all week and tired. In a funk kinda thing.. look for the small wins. They will help you smile and feel better. I just cut a new hole in my belt to make smaller because my pants fall down. ( Second time doing this) woooo hooo! I now can reach my shoes with out a shoe horn. Didn't even notice that. My wife told me me she saw me do that. . sweet!!! The little wins are very important. So look for them and enjoy your journey. Celebrate it !! Wishing love and good health on your weight loss journey!! -
At a stall after 7 weeks post op
Leo segovia replied to Desi^'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm down 17 lbs and starting week 7. Been in a stall for about 3 weeks( feels longer) but I keep reading it is ok. And the journey is a long road . I'm happy so far. I keep getting stronger after feeling very week and low energy( 1000 calories a day will do that to you ) I have increased my calories recommend by my nutrition specialist. 1200- 1300 is ok see how I feel. . it has helped. I have had no issues with my wounds and feel I am healing very well. I have added more walking and light stretching excise with super light weights. And feel better and better. So reading your post I believe you are doing super. What I learned is not to over think it. Consistency is our best tool. The journey to better health is a marathon the weight loss is a bonus. Plus the little wins add up . I can actually reach my shoes with out a shore horn, pants fall off with out a belt. ( Today I cut a second hole to make belt smaller) !! Whoo hooo!! Wishing continued success and good health!!! Cheers from Toronto Canada!! -
You might want to track what you're consuming, just to make sure you're hitting all of your protein and hydration goals. Not getting enough will make you feel bad and will also stall your weight loss. Are you taking your vitamins? You might want to have your labs (to include ferritin level) checked. I took vitamins, religiously, before surgery. I'm sure that half the reason why I'm dragging right now is because they had me hold them. I get to start taking them on Tuesday and I'm so looking forward to it! I'm anemic and can't wait to start getting some iron, again. I'm looking forward to getting back to exercise. Pre-surg, I enjoyed running on an elliptical and I also liked doing some of the workouts that Beachbody offers. I'm really looking forward to seeing some results from exercise. Before surgery, I never saw anything change. Now, I should and it's exciting!

Thank you. I'm not checking until my normal weigh in day on Tuesday. Just want to focus on my new workout routine before I even think about my weight. -

Today is a rest day from working out. My body is SORE. Adding the weight training has been a game changer, for sure. Given that I have MS and run a real risk of overdoing it, I have to keep giving myself 2 days to rest. BUT, I added the weight training to 2 days of my normal workouts. So 2 days a week I'm PUSHING myself, 3 days I do my normal cardio, and 2 days I let my body rest. My body is MAD right now LOL The weights are a whole other thing. I love it, though. I love how my health and body are changing, and adding the weights is just going to make it even better. -

VSG Experience; starting weight 205lbs
tx2az replied to KRod6's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sleeved on 9-1-2022. Surgery date weight 200, current is 172.2. Height 5'2. My beginning BMI was pretty low, about 36. I am so glad I had this surgery! I didn't have to take any pain meds. Never had nausea or anything. Looking forward to getting off meds for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. AND learning to nourish my body properly! Overall, a very positive experience. -
I totally love this approach, it helps a lot because I do the same per day and I am going to do the weights by the couch as well thanks 🙏 good to know others are like minded as well .

I don't formally exercise because I don't like the guilt or stress feeling if I don't do it a certain day. So this time around, I have embraced a lifestyle that is based on movement, meaning I just keep moving in my daily life. Whether I'm at home doing chores or at work. For example, when I watch a movie, I will do exercises, like crunches or sit-ups. I keep a pair of dumbbells by my couch. Sometimes I wear leg weights all day. And some days, I feel so tired probably because I'm not taking in enough calories, and I won't do anything but stretch all day. I practice the "One in One out" rule to have no clutter in my home so I do a lot of walking back and forth to get what I need. Things like that. While others depend on exercise to lose weight. I don't. I can't "outrun my fork" lol. The exercise is to just to keep me healthy. The weight loss is from my diet.

I would just say make sure you increase your calories to around 1200, switch up your exercises once in a while, watch the sugars because they can definitely slow weight loss, keep protein between 70-90g per day, watch the fats (and try to have the majority you consume as healthy fats), reduce caffeine if possible, avoid carbonation, definitely keep fluids up. And after all that, just give it time, have patience, and really pay attention to your NSVs (Non Scale Victories). Those are keeping me sane right now during my VERY long and annoying stall.

@james2021 thanks so much for reaching out and way to go on your achievement!! You've lost more than 1/3 of your starting weight. Starting again is always more challenging than staying the course, but being conscious and honest about it is crucial. I've been hovering in the same weight range for a couple months now as well and am at the stage where even a single pound lost is worth celebrating. I struggle with getting enough protein (especially in the morning), avoiding carbs, and moving my body, which are old habits that got me to nearly 300 pounds. Sound familiar? I have a surgery on my right foot two days before Thanksgiving, so I'll be non-weight bearing for a couple months... and unable to drive. I'll be spending my winter/holidays healing and a big part will be to eat healthfully. Let's do this together! Let me know what you're doing toward your health and wellbeing. Won't it be great to spend next Spring and Summer feeling strong and amazing? Let's do this!

Hello hope everyone is doing well … so it’s been 9 weeks since surgery and I’m now wondering how people are doing with exercise? I haven’t started but I am very active throughout my day . My levels of energy has been low lately but I’m thinking it’s because I don’t feel like I’m meeting all my goals and there are times when I’m confused on if I’m eating enough or drinking enough. I don’t feel like I’ve lost any weight and it is discouraging but trying to fight past this feeling . Thanks

November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Post op gas sucks. Sipping has helped because it can make me burp. Have felt it move to my shoulder and neck. The moment that I feel that I start gently moving that area and it usually disappears quickly if I start on it right away. If I wait to move the area it turns into more pain and I don’t want that at all. Lots of gas bubbles that feel like they are under my sternum and those are tougher to deal with until they move somewhere else. Walking in general helps those some. It hurts to sip some still. Not as bad as day 1, but I have also learned how freaking tiny the sips have to be. Using the one ounce cups from hospital (30 ml) I can only sip about 5 ml at a time comfortably. If I did over ten ml it huuurts ! I am sure that will be better with time but keeping it very small and frequent. getting up and down sucks, but walking hasn’t been bad for me. Just slow and deliberate. I walked around my yard with my pecan gatherer (weighs about two pounds) and used it like a walking stick that picked up pecans yesterday. No bending, nope nope - not going to happen. Dumped it every ten or so nuts (I just turn it and dump into a box.. does not strain any bit of me).. sat on my outside swing frequently too. Enjoying the sunshine and resting between nut walks. The swing movement was helping with the gas too. my big incision hurts, the others I can’t really even feel. The big one I have to hold my hand against going up or down and will ache at rest. All of my incisions have big bruises around them, the big one is the worst. Dr apparently told my husband and mom that he could tell inside that I had already lost weight because the fat in my internal areas were already looking good for someone my size. husband made me an enriched beef broth for me last night (he pressure cooked meat and veg in beef stock and strained it through my fine mesh strainer). Tasted good, and warm things soothe and don’t hurt as bad going down (but sips need to stay the same..) And in the TMI category - be aware that this surgery can also trigger your period to come early. Another joy of womanhood. At least I don’t usually get cramps, just more to do when I go to the bathroom to pee.. (last month it came early when I got terribly sick with the flu too) other than that.. I am down 2 lbs already from surgery weight. I was expecting to be heavier because of all of the fluids and other liquids they put into me in the hospital. 149.5 lbs to go to get to ONEderland lol time to go do some more nut walks ! -

Good to hear the progress you have made. I had my RNY done on the 9th May. My weight loss has slowed down this past month too. it is kinda a little bit odd this whole experience isnt it? Never done this before and dont know what to expect. Wouldnt it be nice to know what the road ahead would look like? Like yourself I do feel much better for my loss. I am basically just going for walks at this point. So far I can manage 3.5kms easily which is such an change after finding walking past four houses was enough to exhaust me. We got this. -
I was diabetic pre surgery and my blood sugar never went over 160 after a meal, but my A1c was 7.4. Type 2 diabetes causes weight gain among other issues. Psych meds definitely cause weight gain, and hormonal imbalances (particularly PCOS, which I have) definitely cause weight gain and slow down or stop weight loss.

If you are burning 1600 calories, you should be consuming around 1200. If you work out that hard and eat as little as you are, your body thinks it's starving and it holds on to everything. You still want to consume less than you burn off, but you have to consume enough so your body knows it's not starving and will let the weight come off. For protein, try to stay in the 70-90g per day range. What do your fats, sugar, and carbs look like? Are you drinking anything carbonated? That can stretch the pouch, as well. How often are you eating and what kinds of snacks are you having?

@pk88 so sorry to hear you are going through that, and amazing news that it was caught early. You're right, the surgery and being so on top of your health probably helped a lot! After losing 110 lbs in the first 7 months, my weight has been stagnant for the last 11 months. I'm glad I haven't regained, but I really need to get back to basics, tracking, and start exercising in earnest. It's definitely getting a lot harder. I still want to lose another 50 lbs, at least! Hope you are all doing well. ❤️

Had my 6 month post op appt on Wednesday. Went FANTASTIC, but still in this stupid stall. Officially 3 weeks on Wednesday. So so annoying. Really ready to have it break so I can get on with it. Have to get bloodwork done, but all vitals and stats look excellent. Happy with my progress and my NSVs and my improved health. My dietician told me to keep my calories between 1100 - 1200 per day and add 2 days of weight training to my workout routine. I was doing light weights and cardio 5 days per week and she said to add the weight training to the 2 days I'm not working out. She said my diet and drinks and Snacks are all good, the amount and frequency I'm eating are good. So hopefully this will help. Today was my first day doing it. This stall is just driving me nuts. She also said if I get to 5 weeks, it's considered a plateau at that point and not a stall anymore. And then there's different things I would need to do if I'm in a plateau. Hope it doesn't get to that. I know stalls are normal, but I haven't even lost 100 pounds yet, and I'm nowhere near my goal, so slowing down this much at this point is really frustrating. Just gonna keep on keepin on until the stall breaks and the scale makes me happy again.

k. i did ultra low carb (<25 NET g per day), aimed to get 60g protein per day and just let the fat fall where it may that kept me under a certain calorie level. I have no idea what diet that would called. maybe calorie-restricted-modified-Atkins-2?? ...but im going to say this (and i know there will be opposing positions to it!): beyond the initial drop in weight when going low-carb, in MY experience, macro makeup has little influence on long-term weight loss than calorie deficit does. try different tactics, and find out what works for YOU. not everyone will respond the same way to a particular "diet". Good Luck! ❤️

There's also such a thing as not eating enough calories. It's possible that you're burning too many calories for what you're taking in, so your body is just hanging onto everything it can get. Burning 1600 calories a day and only getting 70 grams of protein, might not be enough. If you add weights, yes, you might gain weight. But, you'll lose fat and you'll get smaller.

I am meeting all of my protein goals, most days I meet my water. I get about 70-100 grams of protein a day and very little carbs. I am concerned if I do strength training, I will gain even more although its muscle and I know muscle is good. I just cant wrap my head around the fact that I am burning alot more than I am intaking...... and its not moving.
