Recovery TImes / Back to work

We all heal & recovery differently & in our own time. Two friends & I had our surgeries within 2 years of each other. One took a week & was define. One took three weeks. Me I needed every one of my four weeks but I always recover slowly. And yes we all had office jobs. Best advice is to speak to your boss & negotiate some flexibility just in case you need it: another week off, reduced hours, etc. Lethargy & poor concentration are very common after surgery & may impact your work. All the best with your surgery & recovery.
  2. Stalls are very common & yes, the first one usually occurs at week 3 though it can be earlier or later than that. They usually last 1-3 weeks too. They’re your body shutting down & taking a time out in reaction to the stress it’s been under (surgery, reduced calorie intake, etc.). Stick to your plan & it will break when your body is ready & the weight loss will start again. Go back to your team & ask for more information. You’re paying them to support you & you have the right to ask for what ever information you need to feel comfortable & confident about this process & what you have to or can do . We all have different needs (what I was told may not be completely right for you) & they should be there for you. Can’t complain about an almost 7kg weight loss in 4 weeks especially with a stall. I’d lost about the same in my first month (& I never really stalled during that time). My surgeon & dietician were very happy. Not sure of your starting weight, but remember those people who lose those large amounts of weight seen in programs like My 600lb Life started at very high weights. And they only lose at that rate in the beginning.

    So depressed about my hair

It often starts around month 3 & will persist about 3 months. As with all things it may start sooner or later than that and last more or less than 3 months.

Surgery more than 2 years ago?

I was sleeved a dozen years ago. I was in my mid 50's. I started at 320 pounds, lost 25 pre surgery, then lost to about 175. I stayed at about 180 for many years, but gained after some very tough emotional times over a few years to 220. But kept that 100 pounds off. About 4 years ago, I decided to try to lose 10 pounds in a year. I lost 10 in a few months, doing nothing but being intentional with what I ate; and going back to protein and veggies first. Over two years I lost 40 pounds, realizing that I needed to learn how to maintain my weight - so I would stop losing weight every so often (usually after 8 to 10 pounds down) and NOT lose more, but maintain where I was. How much was I eating, of what, when.... how much was I moving... watching myself and re learning ! I maintained my 175 pounds for another full year - about 7 months ago I decided to lose another 10 pounds. Got there and a few under. I am finally at 29 BMI ! I weigh 162. Less than I did in college in the 1970's !! Loose skin ? Yes. But at 67 next month, I do not want any elective surgeries. I wear a size 14 petite jeans. I have a ton more energy at 67 then I had at 54. I am still working and I organic garden, raise laying hens for organic eggs. I never liked carbonation, so that was never an issue. I eat a healthy diet. I grow fresh greens and veggies. I eat fresh fruits. I eat kind of low carb - if I have a sandwich with bread, for lunch I won't eat carbs for breakfast or dinner. I eat a treat every day. Even when losing weight. But now I can enjoy an oreo, or 2 little dove chocolates..... Or one skinny cow dessert. I had company for dinner this weekend. I BBQed burgers. I ate a half of a hamburger - half the bun, and some fresh fruit salad. I was almost on over fill ! I use most carbs as sprinkles. If I eat Asian, I order chicken and veggies. I sprinkle rice on top. Steak ? Sure. crumble part of a baked potato with it. I steam most veggies at home. I make fish on the grill a couple times a week and then make it into a salad the next day for lunch. I eat differently than I did before. I am healthy and happy. No regrets at all.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

My surgery is on Monday, February 20. I don’t have to start my liquid diet until February 19 at 2 PM. I had a different surgeon at first and he said I would have to do two weeks of a liquid diet before the surgery but the new surgeon is only making me have a liquid diet for less than a day before the surgery. I am very happy about that. Does anybody else have that less than 24 hours of a liquid diet?
  6. That is the infamous 3-weeks stall which is common. It happened to almost all of us over here. Don't worry and just carry on.

Recovery TImes / Back to work

I have a very physical job working in a remote underground mine, took 8 weeks for me to return to work and still feel really bagged out by the end of a 12hr shift.

Recovery TImes / Back to work

I had a different surgery - mini gastric bypass in Egypt. I stayed in the hospital for two days and rested in my hotel for a week. After 1 week the doctor said it was OK for me to fly back to Kuala Lumpur (long trip with 1 stop). Flight was fine and I have requested assistance with my luggage which was provided by the airlines. I had to quarantine for a week at home before going back to work. So in total it took me about three weeks or so. By then, I was eating semi-solid food and wasn't feeling very restricted by the surgery. I continued to wear the compression abdominal compression garment that I was given in the hospital for three months and there were no major issues. I also have a desk job and walking around the office helped me a lot. Good luck

    Any 50yo or older?

Hi mammawdd, I am 64, ok 65 in a couple of days! I had the sleeve done a year ago. On Feb 23rd. Stayed in the hospital 2 days, had b/p problems. My neck, which has arthritis and bone spurs was the most painful part of the surgery. from the intubation I had a severe headache for days after. After I got home my dog was dropped off from his boarder, his legs went bad and was in severe pain a few days after I got home. My poor German Sheppard couldn't walk with his back legs. I was recovering from surgery, drinking my protein drinks, running back and forth to the doggie neurologist. We ended up euthanizing him 3 weeks later, his pain was intractable. What a whirl wind! I'm only now, one year later reliving all that I went thru after recovery. It kept my mind off of not eating. So, One year later, I'm down 59 pounds, labs are normal, fatty liver is gone! I'm trying to lose 11 more pounds, It would put me withing normal weiht for my height, although it would be at the top end. At 65 I'm, happy to be where I am. Good luck with your journey. We didn't do the puree stage. My surgeon went from liquid to soft food, Easy stuff like soup, cottage cheese, yogurt.
  10. I've been watching a Dr. on you tube who explains it perfectly....his name is John Pilcher. He has a few videos, you should watch the one where he talks about the 3 week stall. As long as you're following your program you're fine:)
  11. I am March 20th - and super tempted to eat all those things I won’t be able to each after my two week fast begins
  12. How are you getting on? Im March 1st too. Just finished day 4 of my 14 day pre op diet. Day 3 was the hardest Sent from my SM-A528B using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I got rid of my cold, and today I was involved in an accident with my dogs that resulted in me getting bit. I was put on some strong antibiotics (fortunately there's a liquid version), and given 4 stitches in my leg. I'm assuming this may be a provider-specific question, but what do you all think the chances are that they're going to push my surgery out because of this? It's scheduled 3 days from now. Frustrated, scared, and disappointed. 😭
  14. My surgery was four years ago, and at this point I don't really remember. (Those first few weeks are a blur.). I want to say about a week, give or take a couple of days.

    So depressed about my hair

When did everyone's hair loss begin after surgery? I am almost 2 weeks post op and haven't seen any loss yet but I am sure it will probably come.

Weight loss stall 3 weeks out

here are the 17,501 previous posts on the 'three week stall" (and no, I am NOT kidding). Happens to almost all of us. I wish bariatric clinics would tell their patients about this, because we get at least one post every day from someone worrying because they're only a couple of weeks out, and their weight loss has stalled. It is normal and it happens to the vast majority of us. https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=three week stall

    Food Boredom

I feel like that now, I have stress from all parts of life and when I have to think of food nothing interests me, plus I'm cooking for 3 diff dietary needs right now. I have been surviving on baby bel cheese, avocado and tilapia this week, hopefully things will get better after next week so I can dedicate the time to meal planning.
  19. I will suggest staying away from the scale, just do once a week, and if you see no changes, do every 2 weeks. It is common for people to have stalls and fluctuation in the weight due to water retention etc. I would weight myself more often in the beginning but realized the pressure I was putting myself on so moved to twice a week or once a week and I have not seen any stalls and I concentrate on the whole picture not just on one week, otherwise I tend to have obsessive behavior with my intake.

Recovery TImes / Back to work

I work from home, had surgery 11/22/2022 on Tuesday and was working on Monday 11/28/2022. My worst day were Friday and Saturday prior to starting to work, by Monday I wasn't taking any pain killers, and was doing decently with my liquids which I prioritize the first week and then moved to prioritizing protein. I personally didn't feel tired but was ready to take breaks if needed and to do 6hrs instead of the usual 8-10. I lined up the medicine cups to have 1oz of water every 15 minutes and got up every hour to walk to the bathroom even if I didn't need to go just to get moving.
  21. Kind of freaking out a bit, I'm 3 weeks post sleeve and my weight loss has stalled for the past 4 days. I'm scared I am doing something wrong and not even realizing it. Has this happened to anyone else?

Recovery TImes / Back to work

I had surgery at the end of November and I took two weeks off and I definitely needed the two weeks, although I don’t have the option to work from home. My first week back to work I was exhausted by the time I got home but I still felt ready to be back at work.
  23. the infamous three-week stall (doesn't always happen the third week, but sometime during the first month, almost all of us experience our first major stall). Here are past posts on it that I just did a search for: https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=three week stall 17,501 posts!

Recovery TImes / Back to work

I took three weeks off but could have gone back in two. Other than being tired, I was fine. I have known people who have gone back after a week - although two seems pretty standard. P.S. my surgery was awhile ago - and it was bypass, not sleeve - but I don't know that that makes much difference as far as recovery goes.

Any Feb surgery peeps out there?

Was sleeved on 2/14. Everything is good other than right sided pain. :( I know it’s only been less than a week but ouch! Pain alleviates when I stand or sit slightly reclined.
