  1. I’ve ALREADY had the D-Switch surgery(12/3/19). I was just posting to see if there were others that had experienced the same thing
  2. Hello all! I had Gastric Sleeve surgery on 4/9/19. I am coming up on my 1 year anniversary but I am still 20lbs or so away from losing 100lbs. At month 6 I experienced a 3 month stall that I just recently broke after trying intermittent fasting. I'm kinda bummed that I probably won't meet the "100lbs down in a year" goal. Did anyone else NOT lose 100lbs in their 1st year? If you didn't, were you upset or discouraged about it?
  3. Well I got my initial consultation with the surgeon set up but it isn't until April 2nd!!!! Has anyone else had to wait that long? In addition, my insurance requires 6 weight check visits with my primary doc 1 nutritional consultation Psychological evaluation At least my primary doc knows the process and said my visit on 2/19 will count as the 1st weigh in. Based on what I have seen, this is pretty standard. My letter from the surgeon (and my calculations) put the surgery cost at $520, so I guess I can't complain about the length of time. So it is looking like I will have surgery sometime in August or September. Just in time to not be able to enjoy my husband's favorite holiday, Thanksgiving.

  7. So tomorrow is the big day. Bright and early. The pre-surgery drinks are likely more terrible than the surgery itself. Just a hunch. I just had to swallow two of them within 10 minutes. 🤢 I also spent 10 minutes taking before photos because I couldn't decide if I should pose without clothing (yes, seriously). I have literally gone between nervous and excited like 25307372 times. Pumped. Ready. LETS DO THIS. 💪

  9. Does anyone experience SEVERE pain before and after vomiting? I would like to know if this happens to anyone else that is more than 4 weeks post-op. The first time this happened at 10 weeks post-op, I thought I had a leak or a rupture. I had VSG and I do not experience dumping syndrome. I was eating peanuts and then choked. I then starting experiencing EXTREME pain. I didn't know what was happening and I was in so much pain, I went to the ER and then vomit while I was there. I again experienced the horrible pain and vomiting today (11 weeks post-op) Unfortunately, I have PCS'ed (military move) away from my surgeon and I don't see my new surgeon until Wednesday. I will definitely be telling them about this but I am looking for some insight.
  10. I got a band in 2009 for much the same reasons as you are contemplating it. It was reversible, I wasn’t fat enough for serious surgery etc. It helped me achieve my goal weight and maintain it for about 6 years and then I started regaining . There are a lot of things they don’t tell you preband , the reality of living with it is very different to the marketing. You get told if you overeat it will make you sick, you don’t get told that you may get sick on your first mouthful of healthy food because for some reason it didn’t go down right today. You may have taken a small bite, chewed it well and it could be something you have eaten multiple times before but for some reason today it’s not going to work. You wish that being sick actually meant vomiting because that would be over quickly and a lot less painful than being stuck. Being stuck causes pain in the chest, you think you are having a heart attack, you can’t swallow anything, not water and not your own saliva. In extreme cases you end up going to emergency to get an unfill and put on a drip to rehydrate you. They don’t tell you that healthy food is really hard to eat yet high calorie unhealthy food will go down really easily. Be prepared to say goodbye to steak, chops, chicken, corn, lettuce, raw carrot etc all whilst cursing candy, cookies ,ice cream etc. You will never feel full or satisfied like a “ normal” person again. Instead you will feel a horrible pressure in your throat and or chest. You hear about this magical sweet spot. Well that can be as elusive as the holy grail. Not enough fill and you are still really hungry, too much and you can’t swallow your spit. The difference between the 2 can be O.01 ml and for some reason you still can’t get that sweet spot. Be prepared to spend lots of time in restaurant loos instead of chatting with your friends ( see my comment above about getting stuck) Then there is the reflux. Waking up in the middle of the night choking on acid is no fun. In spite of all this I loved my band as it helped me keep the weight off ( until it didn’t). I was horrified when my surgeon told me they have a limited lifespan and that it was unlikely to do what it was designed to do any longer. He suggested a revision to RNY and I was horrified. That seemed way too extreme. I went home and did lots of research. Came back into these boards and other facebook groups and asked lots of questions. I decided to go ahead and my revision to RNY in Jan 2019. What can I say, the difference is like day and night. My RNY does what the band was supposed to do. I can eat small portions of healthy food and feel satisfied. Hello steak, chops, salad etc. When I’m full I feel it like a normal person would, no more horrible pressure in my chest. I can still eat cake, cookies etc but in much smaller quantities as too much sugar makes me feel gross( which is a good thing). I can go out to eat and spend the time chatting to my friends, food doesn’t get stuck and I haven’t vomited since my revision. So with the benefit of hindsight if I had my time over I I would not have a band I would go straight to bypass. If you still feel the band is for you, good luck, do lots of research, be very aware of what you are signing up for. Also start saving so you can fund your revision surgery at some point within the next 15 years.

  14. Because 10 years after RNY I began regaining weight and with the band I wanted a more permanent option and remove the hardware.

    February Surgery ?

So kinda funny story. On my surgery day, I had to be there at 8:00 and surgery was scheduled at 10:00. They had me in a room in gown, IV placed, vital signs taken, questions asked and ready to go by 8:45. A little after my surgeon came in a "little early" for any last minute questions and after her, anesthesiologist came in with consent forms. So now it's 9:30 and I had 30 more minutes until "action". The longer I laid there, the more nervous I got. They didn't end up getting me until 10:30 so now I'm a nervous wreck. They take me to the OR room and had me scoot over to the operating table. The nurse (I think) had told me they would be starting meds in about 5 minutes but would be getting prepped and blah blah. I had a serious bout of nervousness then and I told her I think I'm not going to do this. Can I get up? I'll just walk out. I'm not ready for this! (I was so nervous) I even tried to sit up. I heard her whisper to some guy that was behind my head out of my vision to start the fentanyl "right now" and then she got right in my face and said No!!! You are not walking out of here! You have worked too hard on your pre-op diet and you made a good decision to do this...... And that's all I remember. I woke up later in recovery. I just thought it was a little funny and I'm very thankful for whoever that person was cause I was ready to run out of there!!!!
  17. Imaginegirl, like people have already said, you might have trouble finding a surgeon who still do bands. Also, long term about 50% of people who got the band 10 years ago are having difficulty and getting them removed. There are LOTS of us here who have had to get revisions done. I went with the band those 11 years ago with the same reason you did, I just wish I knew then what I know now, and I'd have gone straight to the bypass and not wasted 10 years fighting with my band. Of course it's your body, but do your homework and be sure the band is really what you want. Either way, good luck!

    April 2020

Orange Lily, I have great news for you; I would have classified myself as a cocoaholic before my sleeve surgery on 8/21/19. For reasons too long to go into, it took me nearly two years to get my surgery done but during that time I started using a Fitbit, watching what I ate and logging everything in the Fitbit app as well as my exercising which I started doing more faithfully. I cannot stress how immeasurably helpful this has been in my weight loss goal. Instead of two or three sodas a day, I restricted myself to one. During that two year delay in my surgery I lost 35 pounds and my PCP even asked me if I wanted to reconsider the surgery. What?! No way! I am having my surgery! Now for the good news; when I started my two week pre-surgery liquid diet, I stopped the soda completely and I haven’t had a soda since. One night my husband was having a coke and I asked for a sip (I was scared because it was a habit that I did not want to restart) ; one sip and I could barely swallow it because it was so sickenly sweet to me. 2/21/20 I passed my six month anniversary of my surgery and have lost another 79 pounds. I started at 315 pounds and I am getting ready to pass the 200 pound mark and enter the 100’s. I am at a point where I have less to lose than the weight I have already lost. Even if I never lost another pound, I would be happy with my results. I won’t lie though; eating is like Russian roulette; things I used to eat upset my stomach and I do get heartburn more often now but I am healthier than I have ever been in my life. I exercise for an hour five or six times a week. I started off with a recumbent bike (I have back issues that started my never ending weight issues about 20 years ago). I have added a Teeter Freestep (a marvelous invention that I fortunately found used and got for $125) and come spring I am investing I am investing in an above ground pool so that I can increase my exercise. I was the oldest of five patients and the heaviest that my surgeon operated on that morning. He has told me that of the five, I have lost the most weight and had the fewest complaints and that he thinks it’s because of my efforts prior to my surgery as well as after the surgery. So, good luck my friend on the exciting adventure that lies before you. By the way, I have gone from morbidly obese (a designation I despised to severely obese and I can’t wait until I leave that designation behind me.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday Sunday, Feb 23 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1.33 yrs PO Sleeve / 113.1 lbs ---------------------------------------- K, me and salad greens are back together again! 20. My scale victory is hitting 40lbs!!! I feel HUMAN again! My non-scale victory is silly, but made me feel great! I went to Wawa yesterday and ordered a spinach salad from the kiosk. For those unfamiliar with Wawa, you order at a kiosk, and they call your number when your order is ready. They have hoagies, meatball sandwiches, chicken fingers, etc. There were about 8-10 people waiting for their food, when the guy behind the counter looked over at me, held up the bag and said "spinach salad?" Of all the people waiting, I looked like the type of person who would order a spinach salad! I felt like I weighed 120lbs, and practically skipped out the door!! LOL!!!
  21. Spent the last 10 days trying to save Ginger but she died on me early morning yesterday, This is a example of why WLS is important - Due to her weight and lack of moving she caught a respiratory infection - The vets were all over it and so was i but due to her being obese she could not kick it! This is why fat people die of pneumonia alot also! So if you are on the fence take this as a warning! Now i have a 16 year old who is devastated at the loss, just venting! At least after 10 days of hell she can RIP
  22. I love the way Dr. Now explains this on My 600 Lb. Life - He says that surgery changes how much you can eat in one sitting, but it does not change the things you eat or the frequency of your eating. So if you graze on "bad" foods all day, you can still gain weight even following surgery. Your program likely wants you to start working on establishing those healthy habits early. Also, most programs want you to lose 10% of your excess body weight pre-surgery. I don't imagine any program expects perfection in this, so I wouldn't stress about it too much. On the other hand, the healthier you are going in for surgery, the better.
  23. I had the band placed in 2008. Had to have a slip fixed in 2010. Band removed in 2019, bypass done in 2020. Other than the slip in 2010 i didn't really have any problems with my band. I lost about 60-65 in the first 6 months, then maintained that loss +/- 5 lbs until 2019. Wasn't really having any issues, but decided I should do a check in with my band doctor, in April 2019 I had an upper gi done, they found that the band was causing problems with my esophagus and recommended removal. Removal and bypass done as 2 separate surgeries. I am 6 weeks post op from bypass and feeling great. I would not do the band again and go straight to bypass, bands fail after about 10 years, or sooner for some. Save time and $$$ do the bypass!! Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

    BACK PAIN

Hello Family, I woke up yesterday morning and had lower flank back pain bilaterally! First thing I thought was kidneys! I have been getting in at least 64 oz of water not counting my coffee in the morning! Only thing I think is the guilty culprit is I tried a Coke Zero and thought how amazing, it took me a whole day to get it down, so I had another one the next day and the next! They are 16.9 oz bottles but again it takes me all day to get it down. I just sip sip sip, my urine is a little darker than usually and so I am thinking that is the problem because as I am typing this, I realized it took me all day to sip the coke zero, I really wasn't getting in my water like I needed to be! I may drink 2 bottles of water and my coffee! See, there talking it out (typing) made me realize yes that is the problem! I go to my regular physician tomorrow, so cannot wait to see what my blood work is going to be like! I continue to take my multivitamins, calcium and thiamine! I am officially 10 weeks postop, 222 lbs 37.5".

    February Surgery ?

Honestly those first few days I felt like all I was doing was concentrating on trying to get hydrated and get some protein in! It has gotten better. I am 2 weeks out tomorrow, and after 10 days my doctor's office allow a very limited amount of "smooth" foods; egg whites, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, really ripe banana, apple sauce, cream of wheat, fat free refried beans. Today I actually went over 600 calories! It included a protein shake made with Fairlife milk which was 210 calories, but is also over 30g of protein in 8 oz! And I drank it in about a 1/2 hour! Hang in there DB. It gets a bit better every day.
