Get the band if you want to have to do all this over again in about 10 years....and fight with it those ten years....I know that there are some real success stories with the band, but they are the exception rather than the rule. I wish I hadn't wasted 11 years with mine before it slipped, gave me a hiatal hernia and I had to have it removed and a revision to RNY. Whatever you decide to do, it IS your decision, but do your homework. And whatever you decide, good luck! We are rooting for you.

New bee .... I am afraid it will not work for me
catwoman7 replied to themonk4u's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
at a BMI of 46, you are definitely "fat enough" (your words - not mine!) for it (if it makes you feel any better, my starting BMI was 60). I think a lot of people get their perceptions of bariatric surgery from shows like "My 600 lb Life". I've been working with pre-op groups for the last three years, and I've never seen ANYONE the size of the people on that show. In fact, I would guess most are in the mid-200s, with a handful of 300+ people thrown in for good measure. (I was one of the latter. I thought I'd be one of the smallest people in the room. Nope! I was the biggest!) chasing that "full feeling" is psychological, not physical, so it won't be "fixed" by surgery. A lot of us can probably relate to that - but you're still going to have to deal with it. I have to fight that all the time and constantly ask myself if I'm truly hungry, or if it's just thinking I have to feel "full" again. That said, most of us do lose our hunger for a few months after surgery. For the first time in my life, I didn't give a flying flip about food. Wow - does that ever make it easier to stick to your plan and lose weight! But unfortunately, that doesn't last forever. Hunger usually returns within a few months - or up to a year (mine came back at five months). Then the real challenge begins... as for losing weight - yes, you will lose it if you stick to your clinic's plan. And no, you won't gain it all back as long as you stick to your clinic's plan. It's pretty common for people to gain 10-20 lbs after hitting bottom, but as long as you stay on your plan, you should be able to maintain at that level. It's a battle, but it's not impossible. Lots of us have done it.. I think you'll be glad you had this done. Most of us have no regrets at all and would do it again in a heartbeat. -

Any August 2019 people out there?
ahillig replied to big_ange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my 6 month follow up last week and I have lost a total of 85% of my excess weight! I have 13lbs left until my goal. My weight loss has completely stalled, I was stuck the majority of February and it finally started to break. Lost 2 inches over all despite only really losing a couple pounds. I was told to expect the weight loss to slow at this point. I need to get back on my game nutrition wise. Not eating a lot just not eating the best I can be. Some NSVs, I am now a size 10 in jeans and a medium in shirts! Prior to surgery I was a 22/24 in jeans and a 2XL-3XL in tops depending on the brand. Also, my CRP went from a 24 before surgery to an 8! Ideal level is 1 or below per my surgeon but he was so happy with the huge drop. -

Hey Lori, I had my surgery September 25, 2019. Since then I have lost 67 pounds. Still got a long way to go but my weight lost has been steady. The surgery wiped my appetite away. I never get hungry. I have to make myself eat. I get full quick and not able to finish a meal. I encourage you to have a better life and to get the surgery done. I have never been able to lose this much weight on my own. The most that I could lose was 10 bls or less on my own. Now, since losing weight, i do more things outdoors. I look forward to going shopping for cloths and I sleep better at night without snoring. The surgery has saved my life and it can save yours. -

I feel you, Chas74! I am 6 days post op and in the "Full Liquids" phase for another 10 days--and I was on liquids for 2 weeks pre op. I too am so tired of liquids. Did you try tomato soup with a dollop of plain Fage Greek yogurt in? Also, my doc said I could have some very thin cream of wheat. Also, sugar free pudding is a nice treat that is permitted on Full Liquids. They also suggested putting a dollop of low-sugar smooth peanut butter in your smoothie, blending it very well, to give your taste buds some variety as well. Good luck and just remember, it will ALL be worth it! Counting the days until puree...

December 2019 Sleevers, how are you doing? What’s your stats?
JB1 replied to smb123's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Everyone and Surgery Buddies, Stats: Sleeved 12/23/19 HW205, SW199, CW 171. #31lost and 19inches overall. 🙂 A bit over 2 mos out and doing ok. No issues with meds/vitamins. Do have issues with heartburn from time to time but Tums helps. Down 2 pants and shirt sizes and appreciate the nsvs like being comfortable in my clothes, skin and not being out of breath and tired all the time! I can exercise now and do walking 3 miles a day and I do flights of stairs 1-2 times a day at work. No gym yet. I'm still struggling with eating real food and trying to lose weight. I do struggle with getting over 55oz of liquids in daily. Just not enough time in the day to get it all in, as I can get really full just off liquids. I usually have coffee with vanilla protein shake for creamer for breakfast and 2oz of protein yogurt. Lunch is protein shake or on occasion 1-2oz of meat and cheese, refried beans, tuna etc. Dinner is 4oz of meat and veggies. Have found my downfall is after dinner snacking. Hubby encourages it since he does and its bad for us both. I've had to learn to deal with stress and emotional eating in different ways. I now have a mantra I say to myself "I am worth being healthy, xyz is not my issue, not worth sabotaging my happiness and wls journey". Then I get out of the kitchen and find something else to occupy my time. Thank goodness my dog never tires of walks or playtime. 🙂🐶 I wish everyone the best and much success on the continued wls journey! -

No goal weight?
jasmineinmymind replied to jlb8080's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I originally had a goal weight of 150. I'm 5'8. As I'm nearing my goal I realized 160 would be a little more realistic. The doctor told me that being a year out Im probably not likely to lose a lot more unless Im willing to diet or do something drastic like serious weight lifting. At this point Im a size 10 or 12 in pants and a large in tops and I look OK. I want to lose another 10 pounds because I still have some belly fat but really I'd be OK if I stayed at this weight. It would be nice to lose a little more and I will give it a shot but I sure look better than i did at almost 260!! -

I was sleeved on 12/18 Lost 25 lbs in first 2 weeks. Another 10 in the following 2 weeks. (Roughly) Been in a stall ever since. Do stalls last 5-6 weeks this early on? I’ve done all the research & work diligently with my nutritionist. Changed up my routines a bit to try & kickstart but having no luck. She says it’s normal and as long as I get in my water, protein and vitamins every day then I should be good. This does not seem normal to me. Any thoughts on this? Getting desperate HW 304 SW 270 CW 235 Daily calorie intake 700-1000 Protein - at least 90g per day Water - 100+oz per day -
Foods that you Shouldn't be able to handle but can
Ellf posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So, almost a year out from my surgery and down about 130 lbs from surgery day (197 lbs overall), I find myself eating what I consider relatively normal now. I mean yes, there's still things that I can't eat at all, and I still eat a lot less overall than I did before. I've still found that there are things that I can handle now that in theory, I shouldn't be able to. An example? Fun size M&Ms. I can handle a pack of these with some protein and not have any issues. One pack of fun size M&Ms is less than 10 grams of sugar. I can also handle grapes, sushi, and a single slice of pizza. Anything more is pushing it. My weight fluctuates day to day, but it's still on a downward trend and I'm getting good walking in with the occasional swim as exercise. -

February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My team just refuses to give me solid parameters. Like now I’m 135 pounds and their reaction is “meh, don’t panic, your body won’t let you die. Oh yeah, but still don’t consume >40 gm total carbs in a day”. They never would help me set a GW, and they refuse to tell me a recommendation now. My NUT did confirm that they see a lot of people gain back 10-15 pounds in year 2 though. Gonna stay extra vigilant that that doesn’t happen. -
Calories/Total Fat in regards to Proteins
FluffyChix replied to lm4dham05's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Your fat requirements are going to be very different than mine as an RNY. I'd really want your RD or doc to tell me what ratios they want for their DS patients. I know that your protein reqs are also way diff than mine. For mine and most VSGs the loose rule of thumb for protein is 1g protein per every 10 calories. So if you have ideally a recipe with 160cals, it needs to have a minimum of 16 g protein to be a good protein bargain for the buck. Then beyond that the only rule they gave is no more than 5g sugar per serving/meal. Any other rule was individual from them and based on status and how we were doing with our diet, diet satisfaction, and if we were losing and/or maintaining and progressing well. I had to be very low fat and low carb/low cal to lose. So I'm a big outlier. -

@TheJuice202 that sounds smart. I'm only 10 weeks out so I have a long ways to go. I'm sure a lot of people need a number to keep pushing. The further along I go I feel like I may need to do the same thing to keep motivated! I've just always eaten pretty healthy.. so I know the weight will come off.

Gastric Bypass for Senior Citizen
AuntGrandma replied to Too old to lose?'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm almost 64 and had lap band at age 52 in 2008 revision to RNY 2014 at age 58. I never reached goal but I am determined to get back on this horse and fight for more weight loss. Lowest I got was 219 from 289 and then over the last 5 yrs gained back 60 of those 70 lbs. I have recently been following low carb low fat diet for the last 2 months and have dropped 35+ lbs. Yeah me!!! My current weight is 232 lbs down from 269 in Dec 2019. My 1st goal is to get to AT LEAST 219 lb... another 13 lbs down (my previous low weight) THEN I want to continue on to reach my goal of 180. I'm sure that's possible..... isn't it??
