  1. 3500 calories = 1 lb of fat 3500 / 7 = 500 calories per day That's 500 calories per day MORE than you consume, to loose one lb per week. So, if you consume 1000 calories, you must burn 1500 calories....OR consume less calories per day. Ideally consume less, and burn more...increasing the gap between the two.... And that is for real fat burning weight loss, not the quick early stages of weight loss which everybody experiences If you want to loose more than one pound per week, you have to up the above numbers.... Also, in my case, I have always found Protein to give me more energy than calories.... Also, since I am no llonger concerned about loosing weight, I find that exercising everyday covers a multitude of sins....with no weight gain...

    hubby/wifey

My husband has always loved me big or small. I had a woman ask me once " what does your husband say about your weight gain" I told her "he loves me the same" she said "oh what a good man he is to love you after gaining weight" what??? Like he's a saint for sticking around?? Lol.. But he is a great man for many reasons . He wasn't really thrilled when I told him about the sleeve. But I asked him please come to a consultation with the doctor with me. At the doctors I let him see how much I weighed and laid everything out on the table for him to see. I mean I was big enough to qualify! I think he really didn't want to believe I was that big but I was. He is now my biggest supporter and likes seeing me happy!

Lapband Just Did Not Work For Me

I read the whole post and all the responses here is what I can share and hope it helps: I had thyroid cancer so I don't have a thyroid, my TSH levels must be kept at hypo (slow) rather than normal or hyper. This has Always caused weight gain or extremely slow weight loss. I went to many seminars listening to every dr and after awhile they all sounded like used car sales people! Then I met a dr who said the band is not the cure all its not magic and if you do this you have to think of it as a marriage, you must love me and I must love you but above all that we must work as a team. 2011 June I got my lap band from then till now I am down 110 however that is a number. Not every plan works for every person, I decided to stay on weight watchers and go to weekly meetings. This kept my focus and my sanity. It also kept me eating healthy. I eat my Protein first, then my veggies last my complex carb. I only eat on a appetizer plate. I weigh and measure all my food, I take Calcium supplements. I work out, Pilates has done wonders for me. I finally after 54 years put myself first. If I'm hungry in between a meal I will eat an apple or some small fruit or yogurt. If I was in your shoes the first thing I would do is get all your medical records and see another doctor, I would then see a nutritionist. Finally I will say that I am married to a professional chef and the one thing he has taught me is every calorie is not the same. Just because your only eating 900 calories a day does not mean they are the right calories that are going to burn the fat not store the fat. Hope this helps you, please remember when you put something out there on a public forum your going to get many opinions the hope is that you can get some support where you need it. Good Luck
  4. Now I wait. I have UPMC for You, which is medical assistance here in Pa. I had some issues with weight gain during the 6 month diet because of a severely abnormal TSH level, so I'm a little concerned about approval. Hopefully the letter from my PCP helps that. Fingers crossed. And toes. And eyes..........

Sometimes I Just Have to Say.....

Well, I fell off the wagon also. However, I haven't had the experience in 6 years to know what "the green zone" is. I probably never will. I have never been able to tolerate even the slightest fill! So while I lost over 100 pounds with no fill, which I give the band credit for the help! I will never experience this "great place" everyone talks about! I know my part in my recent weight gain, however, I also see advantages that others have that I don't. This is not an excuse, it's a reality. Would all of you be at goal or as successful if you were never given a fill? I don't think the band should do 100% for me, but for anyone to think that if I would just "follow the rules" it should be "impossible" to fall off the wagon is kind of hurtful. I accept my part, however, the band isn't as responsive and cooperative with everyone. After 6 years with the band the one thing I have learned is.... never say never!

    Love my band :)

food tolerance and GI quality have nothing to do with weight loss or complication rates. Of course the band scores low in food tolerance. Restriction is the point! I personally would never choose permanent digestive surgery unless my life depended on it. Thankfully right now it does not. I have a food addiction not a physical disease. I've had nothing but malfunctions in my band for 8 years. Even when it had a slow leak or a fast leak I still fought to contain my weight gain. I committed to the band and it has proven to me over and over that it works for me. That being said, the band isn't for everyone. I just get so irritated with people constantly trying to prove its bad. You know what's bad? Irreversibly disfiguring your god given perfectly healthy digestive track for a psychological addiction. All my personal opinion.

    TUMMY TUCK TOMORROW MORNING

Yes, ultrav!olet, it has definately helped to boost my self esteem! BUT...it also makes the other areas that need tucked and lifted stand out to me. One of my friends asked me the other day if I thought I would ever be happy with the way I look and stop having cosmetic surgeries. My reply to her was "Absolutely! The way I look at it is I did a huge disservice to my body by all the abuse I put it through over the years of gaining weight, losing weight, gaining weight and losing weight. I need to do one lift and tuck to every major area (face/neck, tummy, butt, boobs, thighs) and then I will be done. I will have corrected, as much as possible, all the wrong that I did." Then I told her one last thing...don't be jealous! None of this is free or painless...it is all coming with an extremely high cost to my finances, pain/suffering, and time lost. Thank you to ALL OF YOU for your support and thoughtful responses to my pictures. You make me feel great!

    Heartburn

I'm now experiencing heartburn with many foods at this heightened weight. I'm wondering if its a symptom of weight gain or age?
  9. Hello! I'm glad to see this topic on here as I've been struggling with the issue, among the others in my contemplating of banding. I am 5.1" and now over 200lbs. I carry my weight very well, (all over stocky type figure) and have been told repeatedly how I " don't look that heavy." My mother has had the surgery and it helped her a great deal. My conditions include fibromyalgia, degenerative discs in neck, back and a previous lower back injury. My knees have always been a problem even at a low weight. I have BMI at 36. It's right at that level where people say, you aren't heavy enough to consider this option, but as someone who has fought the mighty wave of weight gain since early childhood I disagree. I have been gaining since after the birth of my child and had a hysterectomy in 2010. Since then, it's been almost impossible to lose a pound. I have tried every diet, weight loss idea on planet earth. I am still always consistently 50lbs+ overweight which is obese. I believe it's a matter if time before more serious health problems. Am I to wait for that? Any thoughts or encouragement is appreciated.

    5 Confessions (Join In)

I confess that the past couple of weeks I have been eating whatever I want when I want because I'm so stressed thankfully no weight gain, but I need to take a deep breath and refocus!
  11. Your attitude will help you lose the weight faster. Why? Stress slows weight loss. Stressing over stalls helps them hang on longer. Dump the stress, dump the stall. Your wisdom serves you well. http://www.caloriesecrets.net/can-stress-cause-weight-gain-or-weight-loss/

    Another surgery

If you're relying on mostly liquids because you can't keep regular foods down, you're likely too tight. A band too tight actually can (and often does) lead to weight gain because you're stuck drinking calories or relying on slider foods. In fact, most people who gain with a band too tight will start losing again once they get a slight unfill and can actually eat a variety of healthy foods again.

    Another surgery

"can't keep most regular food down" sounds like you're too tight and I've heard many say that will stop weight loss and even cause weight gain. Just a thought. I hope others will chime in on this.

    Anti-Depressants

I'm really happy to hear that you don't require his support to proceed with the surgery. Wellbutrin is an ok antidepressant and weight gain isn't a side effect like many other antidepressants but if you have been managing since your father's death with therapy alone that is great. It's so hard to get off antidepressants once you start, trust me I know! And congratulations on quitting smoking since that would definitely get in the way of getting the lap band. I know what a struggle that is too! Congratulations on taking control of your life and proceed without the Wellbutrin. It sounds like you may need a new PCP, but in the end you will be happy with your decision. Good luck!
  15. Hi, I was banded in October 2008 in Indianapolis and moved to Connecticut literally one month later. I found a bariatric surgeon and he handles my fills. I think he hates me. I have PCOS and have struggled with my weight since I was 12. I got the band when it was all the rage - there were constant commercials, etc. I felt it would be a good tool. What I didn't factor in was my emotional eating - I managed to get by the psychological testing but looking back, I absolutely was not ready because I did not have my eating under control. The band is a tool but I really thought if my appetite was supressed I would lose weight. The lowest I reached was 237 lbs. I did that by attending weight watcher meetings. Then my weight loss just stopped. I absolutely cannot get it below 237. I then avoided my band doctor for two years and recently went back. He was obviously not very happy with me but I can't blame him, I didn't follow up. Anyway, I have joined weight watchers and am doing the barium swallow test on February 27th. My band doesn't seem to have ever worked very well - I never got to that happy medium. Right now I want to restart and I am giving myself one year to try to get the weight off, work with an endocronologist to get the PCOS in control (As that impedes weight loss - I also take anti-depressants and that causes weight gain, sigh), but if I am super disciplined and still don't lose, I am going to ask for a revision to gastric bypass. I am that desperate at this point. When I was in college I was 165lbs but I had to workout 3 hours a day to maintain that weight. I don't really have a point to my post, just wanted to introduce myself and see who else has fallen of the bandwagon and successfully gotten back on. My doctor is not the same doctor who performed the surgery and I think in some ways that is putting my at a disadvantage. I am just frustrated. Is there a way to jump start the band? Right now I am starving. I feel like a total failure. I am hoping this board will provide the support I really need.

    Anti-Depressants

Good Morning all! My dad passed away last year from ALS so I have been in counseling since his death. I was depressed last year and I sought help IMMEDIATELY. I quickly learned that I had other unresolved issues and I have been working on them ever since with no medication. Side effects have been horrible for me as far as weight gain. However, the reason I gained weight is because I quit smoking. I don't regret that but the weight has been horrible. I've tried everything to lose it and I am frustrated because its gotten worse. I like my doctor and I wanted his support but I don't need him to proceed. My doctor visits will be cut if I lose this weight. If all of his patients take control and lose weight half of his practice is gone. That is a fact... My choice is clear...
  17. I love the band. I honestly and truly believe it is the best thing I could have done for myself. I am not the hardcore strict person, and I am not the person who will test my limits as well, well rarely anyway! I am about 3months post op, and I have not had 1 problem yet. Nothing has ever came up, never vomited, nothing ever got stuck.. thank god! I choose the band like all the reasons above, because to me it is less evasive. I didn't want something that there was no return from. I wanted something that could aid me for a lifetime. I have lost 43lbs with just following rules and still having things I enjoy. I have known only 2 people with the sleeve. BOTH have gained their weight back. One never learned how to eat and change their lifestyle.. and the other only lost 40lbs total and even gained that back because even though your stomach is cut off, you can stretch it to the way it was before surgery. She tested it time and time again, I would get so angry with her and this was before I decided I was going to get the band, we would go out to eat... and she would order her usual plate and eat half and would feel full, and say I can still eat more and she would. DEFEATING the whole purpose of her tool, since they are all tools to aid. Another with the bypass, lost sooo much weight.. gained 60% back. Everything has it's ups and downs. But it goes to show you, that no matter which you choose you will have to change your lifestyle for it to work for the long haul, any diet can give us a quick fix, but we wouldn't be doing this if we just wanted another quick fix, just to gain it all back again. I really hope you make the best decision for you afterall you are the one who will be living with the decision you make. Good luck and Keep us posted how you are doing!! Much success no matter what you choose

    Anti-Depressants

Had you already been on antidepressants? And was he just changing your meds? Reason I am asking is because wellbutrin is not suppose have the weight gain side effect that most antidepres. do. And if you could lose the weight by switching meds without going thru surgery, awesome. Or he may feel you gained due to depression and that is why he prescribed them. I have gained 50lbs in 15 yrs due to my meds. That is why I am thinking this way. My doc agreed after I had no alternative(wellbutrin didn't help my anxiety). Good luck.
  19. Hi all. I had my surgery on Jan 16 and am currently one week post op. So far so good! The only issue I've noticed is I can consume anything cold. But down 10 lbs :-) A little back story. I'm 25 and was diagnosed with a hormonal disorder when I was 14. It's caused a lot if weight gain, blood sugar problems, and infertility. I've always been athletic, played volleyball and was a runner most of my school years, but I was always the chunky one. After high school I got married and have been a nanny/homemaker. To no avail, my husband and I have not been able to conceive. So 120 lbs later and countless failed diets, except use routines, and fertility treatments, I am here. I feel good about my decision. I'm hoping to get to know other RNYers and have a support system since my surgeons office is 4 hours away and I won't be able to make the support meetings. I've read so many post and have so much respect for this outlet and the people who bare the souls on here! Hope to get to know y'all Mandi

getting worried... anyone to talk with?

Well after my psych eval in march is when my doc will submit to my insurance. And yes waiting is the hard part, but I'm going to stay positive because I have been doing what I'm supposed to. I decided to switch to the DS firstly because my doc brought it up, and I didn't know insurance would cover it till I talked to him so I didn't do my research to begin with, and then decided to do my research and there's a lot to the DS that I feel would be a bit better for me. Such as keeping the valve unlike in the RNY also because with RNY you only lose about 60% of excess body weight and with the DS you actually lose about 85% excess body weight, and with the RNY people usually gain some weight back, and with the DS weight gain is almost never seen. So that's definitely a plus for me. because if I'm going to get surgery and do everything right I don't want to stable out with some weight gain from my lowest weight which usually happens with RNY paitients (not all but some) so I've done a lot of research and I feel the DS is for me. There are some things though that are negative such as body odor is stronger but fixes itself within the first 6 months and having to take in MORE protein and vitamins but that's ok for me. He said the DS isn't for everyone but I do believe its for me. And I've done A LOT of research on it.

    A couple of issues!

At the moment I am having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that at 45 I am now in menopause.I love being thin but I hate the fact that the weight loss screwed up my hormones so badly! And I hate these hot flushes! Of course the question of how fast am I going to age now is in my mind all the time. For goodness sake,I am skinny for the first time in 20+ years.I have planned plastics and a lot of other fun things.I dont want to start looking like a dried out old prune before I am 50.Then there is all the conflicting info on HRT.Increasing or decreasing breast cancer and stroke risk? So many studies contradicting each other that I have no idea what to do.You read about the weight gain after menopause and how difficult weight loss becomes and I think shoot,Im screwed!Makes me want to eat..lol Then there is the issue of my tea.Now I can admit I have been super bad with water, just like the exercise. But this is also because every time I start drinking more water my weight bounces up 2-3 pounds and I feel swollen.Having said this I had to get off the tea.It causes constipation when drinking it in huge quantities and I never new that.I was drinking 5-6 cups of tea (400ml cups) a day and was chuffed with myself for having found a way to side step the water...lol.But every time I come back from holiday,I get constipated.Had to look at what is different when I am gone and it must be the tea!Read up on it a bit and I think the dehydrating effect of tea made the constipation worse. Back on the probiotics and I had only 2 cups of tea today and about 2 liters of water. Now,I have about 3 pounds to get to dr's goal and have tonight decided to just do it already.I am going to cut my carbs again from tomorrow and see if it works and if it doesnt I will cut my food allowance for the day until I see results. Then I will lose 10 more pounds to SHOW THIS BLOODY MENOPAUSE that I can do it. Ugg,so my little plastics fund has increased now to include a facelift when the face actually collapse...lol O,and I will start exercising more...lol
  22. i understand she wants to lose 20 lbs - but you can't blame yourself about her gaining she continues to do everything amazing, from eating to exercise - don't know what the problem is that she can't lose - she just has to continue with all the right stuff i agree seeing the doc might help - BUT if that weight doesn't come off......don't blame yourself your wife continues to be your big supporter just continue to be supportive to her, like she always was/is to you don't "not get excited" (terrible sentence)about your weight loss, and don't keep your success to yourself weight was always an issue with my mom my whole family was "normal" size - except me. mom ALWAYS "reminded" me that i needed to lose weight. as a teen-ager, instead of a b'day cake - i always would get a candle on a weight watchers cupcake through out all my years up and down with my weight, i finally have lost 103 lbs post WLS - with the "assistance" of the sleeve - but of course i know "I" did the hard work to lose the weight, i know i "will" be successful keeping my weight off i feel guilty about my daughters weight gain all the time while i was heavy - i "cried on my daughters shoulders" in other words just told her how upset i was about my weight.-it was a constant discussion about ME, not her weight which was fine so the cycle continued about weight being such an important subject since the birth of her 3 kids (12,9,4) she kept gaining to the present point - i know she want to lose the weight, but we all know hard it is - trust me i NEVER bring up her weight (she needs to lose about 75 lbs) i also blame myself for her weight gain, since weight, weight, weight was such a subject for me (and for her to listen to me) but............. now that i've lost 100 lbs, i don't think its right either to celebrate my victories with daughter not wanting to talk much about my weight loss with daughter i think i'm kindof the pot calling the kettle black i know i "should" embrace my success with my daughter, but its hard and i DO feel guilty, sad that at 38 she is now getting heavy when i was her age emotions, feelings - we all have them, and they can be hard to deal with congratulations Butterthebean on your weight loss, I can't fathom "seeing" 172 lbs gone!!! goal here you come!!!
  23. No regrets. I've been dieting all my damn life. Lost the weight, gained it back...Ground Hog Day. As I got older it was harder to get it off, and when I crossed the 200lb threshold I developed sleep apnea and high blood pressure. I tried for another 5 yrs to get my weight under control. Sleep deprived and depressed, I weighed 220 when I finally made the decision for surgery. I'm down to 196lbs in since 1/8/13. I'm religious about following my doctors instructions and having good results. Not hungry AT ALL. It was the right choice me, you have to decide if it's the right thing for you. I did have a few fleeting moments of doubt, before the surgery - but not after.

    Alopecia And Hair Loss

I don't have Alopecea, however I do know both surgery and not getting enough Protein in your diet can cause hair loss. I personally take 5000mcg of Biotin daily and am careful to get in all my protein daily. I don't think Biotin was the cause of your weight gain, btw. There is no medical evidence linking Biotin to weight gain, in fact, Biotin helps you metabolize fats and carbohydrates more efficiently, helping to actually increase weight loss. Here's a great article on it: http://www.livestrong.com/article/324249-effects-of-biotin-on-the-weight-loss/ Best wishes!
