New here I get my band 10/17/13

Hello everyone. First time here. Still don't no how to get around lol. On Friday I had my 2 app with the Dr. Who was going to do my lap band. In 3 weeks I did all my paper work and test , blood work, took the 3 hour class, I mean I did everything he told me I needed. He tells me Friday he doesn't do lap band. He was trying get me to do 1 of the other ones. After he sat down with me back in February 2012 and with my son who wanted to know about this. Dr. Knew I wanted lap band nothing else. We talk about the lap band only. So he was upset cause he didn't get his way. WTf. Is my body. I will not get anything but lap band. So now I'm trying find another hospital .;( no lap band for now.
  2. I was sleeved a little over two weeks ago. Prior to surgery I made a point of eating through all the stuff I wasn't going to be able to eat anymore. So by the time it came to having surgery I had practically had an empty frig and pantry. This has kept all temptation out of my house. I also started experimenting with protein shakes to see what worked best for me. Coming home from surgery I had three different protein powders, four different types of premade shakes, frozen fruit, milk, cocoa, and powdered peanut butter. I was warned not to stock up on a lot of anything cause your taste buds and sense of smell will change after surgery. It worked really well to get me through the full liquids stage.
  3. I agree with most all of the above, but in reality, and although I mostly love even my "cons" it can sometimes be frustrating. Please keep in mind I'm just shy of 8 weeks out... .. sometimes my body NEEDS food but my sleeve disagrees ..still struggling to get hydrated.. low energy .. head hunger is a bi*** .. scared of regaining in the future ... everyone always wants to know how much I weigh ...I still get hungry ...no matter how hungry I get I can only eat just a little bit and very slowly All these things are awesome and a pain in the butt at the same time! ... I love my sleeve! Good luck!
  4. Cons: I now have acid reflex. Never had it before surgery. But it's a small price to pay. Just to name a few! Pros: I lost 70 pounds since surgery on Sept 27, 2013 I feel 1000 times better. I feel normal. I don't think about my next meal. I don't think about starting a new diet on Monday and eat everything in sight until then. Had very little pain and no gas pain after surgery. Recovery was quite easy. Only off of work for 1 week. I could go on and on.

    5weeks post op

Hey! 5weeks out for me too! Done mine on May 11th, but I've only dropped like 11pounds in 2 weeks, stalled til now 🥲 it's definitely unnerving and I truly understand how you feel! Had my first month check with my doctor last week and even he thought that I was kinda slow (they expected abt 17 - 30lbs lost in first month before The Stall) so... a bit demotivating but I've been getting a lot of positive vibes from the peeps here! I guess our diff is that I tend to miss hitting protein target at times due to work but I've started working out a lil and try to eat more protein now. Hoping all the best for you and cheer up! You're not alone )

    5weeks post op

Every one loses at their own rate. There is no right or wrong amount of weight to lose each week. Yes, there may be average amounts of loss people who are similar height, weight, age, gender, etc. may have in common. As long as you see the trend of your weight loss going down you’re succeeding. The amount you lose each week will also slow as you progress. It is possible you are experiencing a stall as has been suggested. These are extremely common. We talk about the three week stall but that first one can happen at week 2, 3, 4, 5 …. It’s just your body taking a breath & trying to catch up with the changes (surgery, weight loss, reduced calories, dietary changes,…). You will likely have other stalls as you’re losing. We’ve all been on that gain, lose, gain roller coaster. Personally I know the reason I always regained after losing was because the diets I was on weren’t sustainable or I just went back to the same old way of eating. I’d start regaining a couple of weeks after the diet ended. The difference this time is that I work at sticking to the changes I made to how I eat, what I eat, why I eat every day. I have many years ahead of me but I’m going to work my butt off to try to stay my course cause that desire to go down my old path is always there. I just understand it & manage it better now. Your success starts & ends in your head. It’s not just what you put in your mouth. You have to do the head work. Many do this with the help of a therapist, others do it themselves. There are lots of people here who are happy to share experiences & offer support. Follow your plan, meet your protein goals, get your fluids in, be more active and your weight loss will continue. You’ll get there.
  7. Belize, you'll handle this fine after all that! I've never had surgery, had three simple births and a total wuss to pain. I'm having a 'painful' recovery compared to my group (30 or so sleeved the same month) and I'm really not in nor ever was in pain. I kept the pain pump in the hospital as long as I could and even asked for more but it made me really nauseous so I stopped that. Once they switched me to the liquid lor-tab that was all I needed. I was sleeved on 8/28, a Wednesday, came home Friday. I slept in the recliner Friday night and kept my pain meds every 4 hours. Saturday I couldn't get up with out help because of sore abs but was comfortable going to every 6 hours for meds. That night I was able to sleep 1/2 the night in bed with my hubby but couldn't turn or change positions so he helped me move to the recliner. Sunday I woke up pain free, sore but not at all bad. I took meds around 2pm and took a nap. That night with a 1/2 dose of meds I was able to sleep all night in bed and was able to turn myself once. By Monday I could get up out of bed and the recliner on my own. Since then, I've been able to do some house chores (dishes, vacuuming, pick up, etc) plus drive my kids around all with out meds. I'm currently taking a 1/2 dose around 3 to alleviate soreness and enable me to help kids with homework and make dinner then a full dose to go to sleep. I anticipate dropping the mid day meds tomorrow or Friday. Sorry if that's too much detail but I thought it might help to give you a picture of how a 'painful' recovery is. Most of my group stopped pain meds the day they were released or 1-2 days after. I gather that that's the norm. Lastly, remember, anticipation of pain is almost always worse than actual. Maybe ask for an anti anxiety for post op. confusing anxiety and actual pain can make treatment worse. Good luck and keep us posted! Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions.
  8. Thanks so much for the welcome PattyGee!!!! My surgeon is Dr. Macaron in Middlebury. I'll have my surgery at St. Mary's Hospital. I did actually talk to Oxford a few weeks back and they told me that as long as they get everything they need and don't need to go back and fourth with the dr's office getting things, then its a pretty quick turnaround. I don't think i'll relax till I get the go ahead from the insurance and get a surgery date!!!! If all goes well maybe by August????

    August Sleevers...

Start looking at what you eat, maybe a food diary that way you can track your weak spots! I had some ceremonial meals but tried really hard to keep life as normal. I am on the first week of pre op diet and after the first three days have settled into a routine. Keep reading the posts on here as they are fantastic at answering all of your questions. Good luck and keep your eye on the prize
  10. Hoping to have my sleeve surgery in September at Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington, Ma. with Dr. David Brams if all goes well with my pre-op testing. I am excited! 70 years old, retired RN and ready to be done with this weight and how it gets in my way. Had thought I would only consider the band, since it is reversible, I thought...but after lots of research I found myself thinking I wanted to do this only once, that is have surgery only once and read myself into believing the gastric sleeve was the best option for me. The nurse practitioner, who went over my particular family history, agreed and so here I am...waiting...but not so nervous as I was a week ago. I am excited to have it and move forward. mojaleski from NH
  11. First of all I have so many questions, I decided to do this because of my weight, Im tired of being critized and I really want a change in my life and plus is for healthy issues. Im super nervous help with questions about pain and how much will I lose like in 3 weeks.

    Weight loss Timetable/Stall

unless you're the size of one of the participants on "My 600 lb Life", your weight loss is normal. I lost 16 lbs the first month. Many of us (probably most) lost somewhere between 15-25 lbs the first month. Stalls along the way are also very normal, the first one usually occurring within the first 4-6 weeks after surgery (often the 3rd week, which is why we call it "the three week stall"). I have mixed feelings about "My 600 lb Life" because I think it gives a lot of WLS patients unrealistic expectations. Starting BMI is one of the factors that influence your rate of weight loss, and the people on that show tend to start out at MUCH higher BMI's than your average WLS patient. As long as your weight is trending down, relax. I was a "slow loser" from the get-go, and I lost all of my excess weight - over 200 lbs.
  13. You shouldn't have any problem getting an approval thru bcbs of alabama. I have bcbs of alabama. I called and spoke to a rep and you shouldn't any problem getting approved as long as you meet their criteria and provide medical necessity. I have gotten approval within a week on the five other surgeries I have had.
  14. In a few months you'll be eating normal foods again, just tiny portions of healthier foods. I find that I eat so slow (gives me time to talk more too!!!) that I finish eating my tiny portion about the same time every one else does. Don't fret! Advice? Buckle up and get ready! It's a crazy ride!!!! Also keep a sense of humor. There will be weeks where you do everything perfect and lose nothing and weeks you do everything wrong and lose 4 pounds. There is a huge learning curve, don't expect miracles,be patient with yourself (and those around you cuz at some point you'll want to kill them for saying something stupid), and do NOT obsess about the scale....they are evil and do strange things, the scale will make you crazy. Also, men often lose faster then women, this does not mean your husband is doing better, everyone loses at their own rate. And congratulations on taking control of your health. Enjoy the new you my friend! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 206.8

    Slow Loser :(

Are you at least drinking the Skinny Starbucks drinks? I am pre op but I have tried the Skinny vanilla latte and it is good and so is the Skinny Cinnamon Dolce or even the Skinny Carmel macchiato. You will still be consuming calories from the milk but it won't be as bad. 4lbs per week loss isn't what I would call slow I would definitely take that. Also at what weight did you start at ? I have noticed that those who start lower seem to lose slower as well. The scale is moving in the right direction at least:) If you give up your Starbucks or skinny it down it may move even faster.

    Added Expenses?

I have a three-session psych workshop to attend that I had to pay out-of-pocket to the tune of $500. But, apart from a $150 deductible, my insurance will cover everything else (assuming of course, that they approve me after I finish all of the appointments listed in my sig line). Paying the $500 was a hit in the finances, but there are a lot of people who pay the entire bill, thousands and thousands of dollars from start to finish, out of their own budgets, so in a sense I felt quite lucky.
  17. I'd like to know how many people are being banded the same week as I am - June 19th? Not sure how many of your know the significance of this day, but I find it ironic that it will be the beginning of my personal liberation. Some say it's not a good day, considering the history - I don't see it that way. Although freedom came 2.5 years late for slaves on the gulf coast of Texas, it came and should be commemorated. Just as I have waited my entire life to be free from extra weight, it will be a day that I commemorate for as long as my band does what it should do for me. If you've never heard of Juneteenth, it was a pivotal time in our nation's history, even moreso for African Americans. In Galveston, Texas (where it actually occurred) it is commemorated by the original declaration of freedom being read on the same mansion steps it was heard from by thousands of Galveston, Texas slaves in 1865. (The mansion is so amazing, it's hard to imagine it being a plantation, it looks like a castle). There are theories about why it took 2 1/2 years for them to be freed - the most common belief is that the information was deliberately withheld - and why they had to ride through the entire state before making the announcement makes it even more logical since they passed millions on their way across nearly 800 miles. While it angers some, it is a part of history that should not be forgotten. Thanks girls and boys, I hope you enjoyed your history lesson for today!
  18. Hi, everyone. I'm a newbie who has been lurking on the forums for the past month or so. You all are amazing and I am so grateful for your candid comments and generosity of information. I have my first seminar next week so I am trying to get my ducks in a row. My insurance does cover banding so I am very fortunate (horizon bc in nj). However, I am a little concerned about whether my lack of medical treatment records might impact the insurance decision. I do not have pcp, haven't seen a doctor in a number of years. I dont have anything "official" documenting my weight and weight loss efforts. I have a few years of cardiovascular screening records, including my weight, from my job. Do you think i can use that proof? I guess I've benn avoiding medical testing and treatment all these years because I just didn't want the doctors to make me feel any worse than I already felt. Not sure if anyone else has been through this. Thanks for any help.
  19. Well, here I am exactly 7 days away from starting my liquid diet and I couldnt be more thrilled. I have actually gone without eating a few times before the actual diet to see what it would be like. The first time was for 3 days, the second was for 4. I managed it pretty well. I drank the shakes and they seemed pretty filling. You may think I'm crazy for being excited about not eating for 2 weeks but I really look forward to it. Now I'm not saying I won't be hating it later on into it, I'm just saying that I'm excited about the changes that I am about to go through. Plus, have you ever noticed how much better you feel when you are actually hungry? I'm also sure I will be pretty moody during this time, but I will try and control my anxiety for my Wife's sake LOL. Anyways, I just wanted to get on here real quick and say a few things, as well as thank everyone who answered my questions that I know have been asked numerous times. You were very helpful and greatly appreciated.. ( Why does this sound like a goodbye post ) HAHA!
  20. I don't have a surgery date yet (should get one next week), but I've been trying really hard to start all the behavioral changes now. I am good with the exercise, eating Protein first, taking my Vitamins but there are a few things I'm struggling with and need some tips. I am having a really hard time not drinking with meals and waiting 30 minutes after to drink. It feels like torture! I always carry my Water bottle with me and am constantly drinking water and thirsty (no, I'm not diabetic). How have you all handled this? I am also struggling to eat slowly. I am super busy in my life right now and I seem to always forget to slow down and remember afterwards and am annoyed with myself. It just seems like meals would take FOREVER and I just want to get them over and done with so I can do something else. Any tips would be appreciated!! Thanks

    Sleevers This Week?

There is a handful of us getting sleeved this week. I'm tomorrow may 28th and all I can think about is the operation and recovery and living life afterwards.
  22. I researched all 4 (band, plication, RnY and sleeve). Do your research and as other have said it is only a decision you can make. Ask lots of questions about life, recovery, results for each procedure but know that no matter what anyone tells you, your results may vary. I was sleeved 15 months ago and have lost over 100 lbs so I do think you could lose 170. I was lucky and my recovery was a breeze compared to some. To live this lifestyle and maintain my weight, I track my food and Water intake using My Fitness Pal. I take a multi Vitamin and Calcium supplement daily as well as one or two Protein supplement a day (shake or bar). In addition, I exercise 4 days a week. I still deal with head hunger and clean plate syndrome. Obesity is not a war that is won by getting surgery but now at least I am armed in the fight! Good luck in your journey.

This has just been my experience, and by no means is it supposed ot represent the norm. My first fill HURT! The Dr had a hard time finding the port, and had to stick me with a needle twice. I ended up with a huge bruise (bigger than the size og a half-dollar). It ended up being too tight and I had to go back three days later for an unfill, and he had to put the needle back through the bruise. That hurt so bad I actually screamed. I just got refilled this past week, and honestly, it didn't hurt nearly as bad as the first (two) time.
  24. So my husband is being very unsupportive all of sudden....and tomorrow is my surgery. Last night he suggested we all go out to dinner at American Steak house. Then he told me that we will be driving to North Carolina on Saturday to pick up his twins. I am still going to be recovering. Then he told me that because I will be home for the next few weeks he will be leaving my toddler home to save on daycare. I'm already stressed because I know he thinks that this is a minor surgery and he is going to be looking for me to cook, clean, and take care of all that I normally do. I just pray that he realizes that I need his support in this time.
  25. I drink premier protein drinks they have 30g of protein per drink. They are the best tasting one I have found and seems to be the one most of us drink. You can get it at Sam's or Costco. I had to do 2 weeks of the liquid diet before the surgery. There are several reasons for this liquid diet. The first one is to shrink your liver it stores fat and needs to be shrunk so it isn't in the way as much during the surgery. The 2nd reason is it helps you get a handle on your food addiction. You will get a head start on what your new life is going to be only later you will get food as well! Head hunger is mean and that is what is going on. Once your surgery is done sometimes you will think you are hungry but you are actually experiencing head hunger. It will drive you crazy but it does get easier and easier. I am 5 weeks post op and doing much better with it. This is your time to be very honest with yourself and recognize your food addictions. This is when you will begin to modify your life so that your sleeve will be successful for life. If you don't get a grip on it then you will eventually gain weight back. Believe it or not my typing this is a reaffirmation for myself that I must continually stay on top of this monster and fix my own problems. With all that said my doctor did tell me when I was going nuts and very hungry that I could do a very lean small piece of meat with some steamed vegetables. I did this like every 3rd day for my pre op and it made the world of difference for me. Good luck on your journey...............you got this!
