3 days post op.. WHAT DO I EAT?
asifitsthelast replied to Back2Me2012's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yogurt (kroger carb master, danon light smoothie/yougurt) low fat cottage cheese, apple sauce (will be hard to find sugar free bc of natural sugar) cream soups (solid pieces strained, you shouldnt be eating any chunks!) broths. Protein shakes (3 gram rule. no more than 3 grams of fat/sugar per serving) Dont exceed 4oz per meal Just because its a liquid doesnt mean you should eat it lol. Thats the list my surgeon has given me. I will have to do that for 3 weeks. -
Omg Starving.......help!!!
RobinGirl replied to Sholitxmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am sorry that you are having troubles. Are you allowed to eat non fat greek yogurt or cottage cheese? My Dad is also a diabetic and has trouble keeping his blood sugar up while sleeping. His solution is to eat 3/4 cup of cottage cheese with fruit or some other topping right before he goes to bed. As for broths- have you tried straining broth based soups? You can get all the flavor of the soup without the solids. I really like low fat broth based tortilla soup. Num Num. -
Hi, Can I join you please? I'm having the lap band done on the 7th with Dr Mignon in Belgium. I started my pre op diet today, lots and lots of natural yogurt, yum! I'm beginning to feel quite nervous about the whole thing now. I think I'm most worried about travelling back home. I'll get the eurostar to london and then the train up to leicester (where I live). I'm travelling alone and I'm worried about how I'll feel. Anyway, thought I'd best introduce myself. Heb

I wondered the same thing.....because when you start that two week liquid diet it's a big ole slap upside the head of reality....THIS IS HARD! My personal theory? Eliminating meat is not physically necessary to shrink your liver pre-surg.....but it IS psychologically necessary to make sure you're gonna survive the restrictive diet after surgery and not do something stupid that could HURT you. Yep, that two week diet feels like torture. Guess what? So does the post-surgical diet. Except with the post surgical diet, you don't get to change your mind. If you cheat you can end up needing emergency surgery. My doc recently had a case of someone eating on Thanksgiving 5 days post op and getting their sleeve impacted. They tried to shift the clog with an endoscope and couldn't....needed to do surgery to unstick a wad of turkey. Maybe that is why we have to prove our metal with the liquid diet. Just to know what we're getting ourselves into and making sure we have the courage and tenacity to make it through. Doctors really don't like their surgical complication rate to tick up....and they have to trust you not to sabotage yourself. Do your pre-surgical diet as written. Don't cheat. They do it that way for a reason. It's hard. Yes. Yes, it is. Very hard. (says a woman who has eaten nothing but clear liquids and protien shakes for three miserable weeks...two pre-surg, and one post surg) But guess what? I had a terrifically easy time in surgery, no nausea, little pain. Tomorrow, I should be cleared to eat yogurt, oatmeal, soup and pudding. Looking very forward to that. Around Christmas, I'll get mashed potatoes and soft meats....which sounds like heaven. You're hitting the hard part. Buck up and do what you're told. DONT CHEAT! The success of your sleeve depends on it.

Headaches and low blood sugar
bluebutterfly replied to Pink nova's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@pinknova I didn’t experience headaches but did have low blood sugar causing dizziness, nausea and vomiting. I’d talk to your surgeon. Mine was great and helped me modify what I’m taking in and I no longer am having that problem and my sugar is staying around 80. My surgeon told me that some people are very sensitive to ketosis and suggested I drink a little juice or have something with natural sugar several times a day. I avoid any processed sugar still. But will do a all natural yogurt popsicle, Greek yogurt - I can only eat a few teaspoons at a time but it really seems to help, organic apple juice. Also, when going out I carry a few peppermints in my purse, the ones that dissolve quickly on your tongue. Took me what seemed like forever to figure out what was going on. Wishing you all the best in your journey.. also adding this small bit of natural sugar has not seemed to impact my weight loss I’m down 20 pounds since surgery and had surgery exactly 2 weeks ago today. -
you can do it just be motivated. i had to do the six month dietian classes. that was april08 the dietian nurse says i had to prove to the insurance that i could lose the weight. that what motivated me. i started my practice early with the clear liquids chicken broth, beef broth light&fit yogurt cottage cheese sugarfree jello she had me on a high protien&low carb dinner but i cut out all the junk.at the last weigh in that was sept08. i had lost 27lbs.then i had to wait three more months before my surgery an during that time i lost another 20lbs.that was 40lbs before surgery. i did not have to do a pre-op.i was 324lbsin the beginning. at surgery i was 285, today i am at 260.an monday i go for my fourth fill. sorry this is so long. but hang in there you can do it.

I Am Ashamed/embarassed
Gene1970 replied to Texarkolina's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Talk to your Dr, a lot of Dr's have an alternative pre-op diet is basically a high protien, low carb diet. Mine allowed me to have lean meat, cheese, low fat yogurt, non carb veggies, light salad dressing, etc... It was much easier to follow and after surgery he said my liver looked great which is the main goal. I lost 15lbs on the pre-op diet, at good, and still shrunk my liver. If your Dr allows this than do it... if not then stick to his diet but one mistake does not make you a failure. Good luck!!!! -
I am also Dec 3 sleeved. I am doing well. Although I was planning on going back to work today and decided I wasn't ready. I'm thinking I'll go Wed. I'm getting 2 protein shakes in a day which is 60 grams of protein, and 64 oz or more of clear liquids. This is my diet till I see my surgeon on Dec 20. He does not allow yogurt or anything that's not clear till after that. I'm having no problems other than being tired and a little sore.

Is anyone a rule breaker? I feel like a failure...
Erin18 replied to Erin18's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yeah I do, I think because it's always ready and there. I feel lazy a lot of the times. I hate cooking, but the only time I do kind of like to cook is dinner. But I did make a really yummy protein smoothie. Fairlife milk 13g protein, 17g of protein in the yogurt which of course makes it a 30 gram smoothie. But I also tried a another yogurt before I buy a big container of it and it has 25 grams of protein in it. It just sucks that I couldn't drink it all. Anyways, I also think we have this stuff (the processed foods) because it's cheaper than the healthy foods. It sucks and gotta do what we gotta do to get by. But yes I get that the money we spend on the processed foods, we could put towards healthy foods. Healthy foods don't last long which also sucks. 🤔 always can meal prep and freeze it. There's 6 people here and one who never eats what I make. So ill have to make sure that there are 5 of everything for the 5 people. Sorry just rambling -
3 days post op.. WHAT DO I EAT?
Looking Ahead replied to Back2Me2012's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Egg drop soup was my favorite and filled me up. I also ate thin gravy, yogurt, fruit juices, bouillon cubes. Hope this helps. Good luck. -
I tried the activia cottage cheese. I HATED the consistancy. It was thick and pasty, but the yogurt wasn't bad. I haven't tried the yogurt again since being banded. I too have a problem with constipation. My doctor said I wasn't getting enough water. So I upped my water. I also learned that lemon water is helpful. Doctor also asked if I was eating citrus. I said no, I had cut it out because of the sugar and the pithy parts of the fruit. He suggested getting fresh grapefruit. Only 3 - 4 sections at a time or serving. Slice off the pithy part where the seeds are and peel off the fibrous part and eat them peeled. I started doing this at breakfast every morning. The last two days I've had a MUCH easier time going to the bathroom. It was like pre-band days. No effort or strain. What a difference!! I will try the activia as well. there is nothing as miserable as irregularity.

April 2011 Bandits
Jae2011bandster replied to Robin3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi millypili congratulations on being banded. I was banded on the 22nd. I didn't experience the shoulder pain like you are but I did have discomfort with the gas in my chest making it hard to take deep breaths. The best thing that I would recommend would be a heating pad and keep walking the gas will eventually go away. The liquid diet stinks but is needed to heal. I survived this week with my Protein shakes (Bariatric advantage) crystal light, Water, hot decaf tea and jello. I'm on the pureed stage now and that's been the hardest for me. I mainly have creamy Soups along with the Protein Shakes, yogurt and water. Things will start to improve as the days go by. Good luck to you on your journey! -
[quote name="meggieo79" post="3789051" Meggio, I feel everything at umass was great! I didn't have dr Kelly but he spoke at one of the support meetings I went to. They set me up with dr perugini and I really liked him too. I had a six month wait because of my insurance requirements, but when I look back, I needed it to mentally ready for these changes. I had no problems with surgery...a little nausea for the first day but was up walking to the bathroom while in recovery, because I waited several hours for a bed on the floor. The nurses were great though everywhere I was. The have you drinking a Protein drink the next morning and I was discharged by 330 that afternoon. For a couple days, everytime I drank, whether it was Water or carnation instant Breakfast, I had spasms in my belly for 5-10 seconds, but when I called, dr perugini called me back within 20 mins...it was all normal and it actually was gone by a week out. My incisions healed up nicely and I have no complaints!! I go today for my fist follow up and really hope I can add yogurt and cream Soups...yummmmm.

I don't know about all of you, but my first meeting with the NUT was pointless. I have read, researched, followed, researched, learned, internalized, researched, and read more on nutrition than most nutritionists. My problem is self-control. I know how to get all my Vitamins, I don't know how to stop wanting that extra slice of cheesy awesomeness that is pizza. We know when we're missing something vital. I think it's totally ok to "cheat" on the NUT when they tell us something along the lines of "no veggies...ever." I don't drink milk because unprocessed milk (by that I mean plain ole milk that hasn't been turned into cheese or yogurt) does not have a nice effect on me. I lurve my veggies and know that there are a ton of them that have just as much Calcium as milk. When I told my NUT all of the above, she was still way concerned about my calcium intake, because, you know, milk is the only place to get calcium...says the NUT. All I am saying is, if your NUT's advice is giving you scurvy, feel free to take matters into your own hands.

3 Weeks Out. What Were U Eating?
Abigal replied to meaganchuckran's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 3.5 weeks out and just experimenting with soft food. Yogurt is good and oatmeal. Also tried mashed and sweat potatoe. For me it's the portion. 1/4-1/3 c. That's it. My mind says more because it miss the taste. -
Week one down
Bandista replied to kayleena_journey2014's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congratulations on your band and best wishes as you go through the next phases. I love yogurt to this day. As others have said, don't worry if the weight loss slows for a while as your body adjusts to the new mode and you will probably have to go through the process of assessing with your surgeon for fills, etc. In other words, it can take a little while -- don't worry and just keep going and you will get there! -
I can't help but smirk when I read this. I went through the same chit. Lol I know it's hard. Gets a little easier each week. Some faster for others. I am 6wks and guess what I had for dinner? Greek yogurt. That's it. Why? Cause I was feeling like u. Solids are still hard for me.

I haven't had any problems with anything I have tried yet. I am still good with dairy, thank goodness... I love my cottage cheese and yogurt! I am good with all veggies so far, even able to eat a few bites of salad. I do well with ground beef or turkey. chicken, fish, seafood, eggs are all tolerated. I have done fine on ice water since day 3, and I know some have issues with that. I really haven't tested the waters much because I am still so limited with a 2 oz capacity that I usually just choose Protein. I have only tried bread once... on half a topless sandwich... it was too filling, but didn't make me sick. I have always had a cast Iron stomach, I guess it is just a "mini" cast iron stomach now.

Any actual stats or research on Genepro protein?
JamieLogical replied to Mrs_O's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did try a free sample of it that I received and it mixed well with my greek yogurt, so if you are just looking for a taste-free option that mixes well, it seems like a good source of at least 15 grams of protein. In their videos they say it doesn't mix great with straight water (didn't try it myself), but does mix well with any flavored beverage like Gatorade and with hot beverages like coffee or tea. -
Protein is very important and I eat it first but veggies come right after.... I do not eat much fruit but I do eat 1/4 cup of frozen blueberries (20 calories) in my Greek yogurt daily (yummy favorite meal) Plus veggies = roughage= poop=
-
This morning for breakfast I actually took EAS carb control protein shake (strawberry cream), 4 strawberries 1/2 banana, 1 cup strawberry Greek yogurt and 4 ice cubes and blended it, I must say it was rather delicious!

Realize band C?
Pittsburgher replied to Pittsburgher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also she said to eat more Snacks because i was only eating about 900 cals per day. She said this might be why im hungry. She also yelled at me because last month she told me to increase my cals to at least 1000. I did try. I added low fat granola to my yogurt and 1oz pretzels as a snack. Both she said are simple carbs and to NOT eat them. Ok ok i get it. Off the shopping list. She wants me to add another yogurt, cheese stick instead of the granola and pretzels. I am already getting anywhere from 90~115 g of Protein daily. Ughhh......
