    Not fair!

men metabolize different than women so they tend to lose faster and also the heavier a person is the first to go is always water so the weight loss at first can go faster then it slows when you are working off the fat. I lost 40lbs first month at 10 lbs a week first month then it slowed to about 2 lbs a week.
  2. Sleeve was also a possibility for me. I didn't like the idea of having to purchase expensive special Vitamins. I also liked the fact that RNY had been around and tested for many decades. Finally my surgeon would have done the sleeve as an open procedure, and I really wanted laproscopic. I know it is more successful with big weight loss, and I know that patients don't seem to gain as much weight back, but I am hoping that I can make my pouch work for me. frustrating

I know this is a common topic, but I have stop losing weight. I had my surgery Dec 1st, and I was doing well with the weight loss. I lost close to 66 pounds. Then about a month ago I stopped loosing weight. I have been staying within a 3 pound range. It's frustrating and kind of heart breaking. I was steadily losing weight, then boom nothing. I feel like all the hard work i have been doing is for nothing. I am trying to stay positive. I know stalls happen. I just didn't know they would last this long.

I agree, you have got to find a way to get your Protein in. It is absolutely critical for health, healing, and ultimately weight loss. I know we all had this surgery to lose weight, but you have to focus on health right now but not getting adequate nutrition can have severe consequences, the least being hair loss. You are recovering from major surgery. Have you talked to your NUT or surgeon? What is your protein goal? Even if you don't like food right now you have to find a way to eat. Have you tried Greek yogurt or cottage cheese? Are you cleared for soft meats like tuna, tilapia, or canned chicken? What about chili? Refried Beans? Protein shakes are not the only source of protein, but they do make it easier to get enough when you have such little room in your stomach.

To Sleeve or not to sleeve.....

With less weight, it's easier to exercise. Plus you can build a great support system of people who know what you are going through and can motivate you. Plus it's a big decision to do weight loss surgery. A lot of people aren't willing to waste the time and effort they put into getting the surgery by slacking off. Plus it's a lot easier to re-lose five lbs than 100 lbs. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. Hi, I'm thinking about having the sleeve done. I currently weight 216, highest 237. I have struggled with my weight my whole life. I have used weight watchers, tried injections, pills. Nothing seems to help. I'm at 39 BMI and my insurance at my work will pay for the surg with a 40. Anyone been in my shoes?
  7. I had my lapband surgery in July 2011. It slipped in July 2012 but it fell back in place once the Fluid was removed. I had it refilled the last week in December and it slipped again last week. I only had it filled for about 2 1/2 months before it slipped again My doctor wants to remove it and would like to do a revision to bypass or the sleeve (my choice). My question is, how hard is it to get approved for a revision due to mechanical failure? I'm worried because my bmi is 36 with no co-morbities. I'm the same weight as I was before the surgery. I have priority partners in Maryland. I was self-pay for my lapband. Thank you!

    Me Before October 2015

From the album: Before & After Pics

This was taken in October 2015. Before I started my weight Loss journey.
  9. I'm seriously considering RNY. I've now had a band that is 5 years old, unfilled and useless. My BMI is 55. I'm in a bad place. My husband is reluctant to see me go through the "diets", "life changes", "surgery" again. He saw me through the band surgery and two separate surgeries for total knee replacements, He doesn't want me to have WLS again because it completely disrupts his/our order of things. He also saw me eventually give up on the South Beach diet that my surgeon puts his patient's on. Does he have a point as far as my food addiction goes? With the Band I was "sober", then I fell off the wagon. All that work and money down the drain. He's afraid I can't do the RNY diet, okay, point taken but I WANT the strictness of the RNY lifestyle. When I was "sober", I ate SO well, I studied everything I put in my mouth. But when my band was too full years ago, or not full enough, I grew angry at myself because the band never made me full. Just made me sick all the time. With the RNY, there's a strict, similar, diet to adhere to. I can do it, my hubby just doesn't think I can do it again. How can I convince him that this is the right path for me? He's all I have in this world. I've hit rock bottom, never been such a slave to my weight as I am now. I want to be a success, like you guys, no matter how hard the work may be.

    Worried!

Avocado, olive oil, nuts, whole grains made with nuts and olive oil....mayo.....do you track what you eat on fitday.com or something like that? Do you know how much you are eating? I know this really helps me to lose weight, I would think this would help to gain weight or stay the same too...

    Worried!

Do not fret, and please do not start eating craptastic food options just to get the weight loss to stop. There are healthy options available. Can you get access to a nutritionist or dietician? If so, do it now, and have them work out a meal plan for you. I had the same issue, and for me the key was to add in healthy fats and more carbs. You'll need to focus on eating more and possibly drinking calories via 100% juice. I can not stress enough that eating junk food to get your body to stop losing weight is just about the worse thing you can do. The few things I did was add avocados, Peanut Butter, nuts, all of those healthy fats that were easy to eat, and not wasted, crap calories. I also drank 100% grape juice for added calories. Refried Beans with cheese, high Fiber, good carbs, and a good option to help add some calories and healthy carbs.

@@gabbisha have you been walking or otherwise exercising? It is critical, and unless you are very ill I would find a way to get it in. Your body will quickly learn to adjust to lower calorie intake, but there's nothing it can do to save calories if you are forcing the expenditure. Also, you will need to make sure you get the necessary Protein in order to see continued weight loss. It is necessary for healing and also for your muscles to continue torching the fat stores. If you aren't getting the protein, the sleeve will be much slower to start accepting real food again. Starvation does not work, and your body will just hibernate. You are far enough out not to be taking the liquid Protein. It looks like you are about to hit soft foods, so a whole new variety becomes available to you. Find some fish or poultry that you like and chew it well and see if your sleeve tolerates it better. Be absolutely sure you are not drinking any non-protein calories at this point.

    Worried!

Hi Sophie; To loose weight you have : 1) Less calories 2) More excercise 3) WLS 4) all options To gain weight you have: 1) More calories 2) Less excercise 3) seek professional help cause this might be psychological 4) all options Please you need to consume more, even if liquid. Drink a milkshake or two. Find someone to talk to professionally, you are worth it! Good luck.
  14. @@aron how awful bad enough to gain weight because you are over eating, not eating well etc but when you are taking meds that make you gain too?? horrible - no control over meds you must take are you still gaining weight? or was it just those couple of years at the beginning? can your doc research your problem with that medicine/pill? hopefully he can find something comparable that won't have weight gain as a side effect my 13 year old grand-son was diagnosed with ADD a couple of years ago he ballooned up from head to toe with his weight gain doc took him off that med - changed it to something comparable!! new med did the trick for his ADD weight came off gradually in a few months (probably less then 70 lbs) you must continue to work with the sleeve/WLS for the rest of your life eat in moderation, lots of Water, eat slowly, plenty of Protein etc remember, "I'm watching you" I "THINK" you should/will lose weight with the sleeve but due to the med, will the weight stay off?? doc can advice you more than i can (i'm not a professional med person!!) whatever your health issue is "maybe" it will lesson with weight loss/sleeve tough decision surgery or not hope to see you in sleeveland good luck kathy

    Serious second thoughts.

I think it also depends on what your goals are. A couple of women on another group I was frequenting are SO worried about getting too skinny, they think if they lose their curves they will be hideous. Both had surgery. One thinks she looks like a "crack head" at 147. The other is terrified about getting under 200. I honestly wonder why they even had surgery. Look at healthy weight charts. Do you want to get down to a healthy range? Or will you be happy just dropping a size or two? Younger people can usually handle the extra weight, but things like diabetes, high blood pressure, and joint problems catch up with every obese person as we age. As others have said, losing 100 pounds and keeping it off is a monumental task. Only a very small percentage of people can do it. And, if you are young, keep in mind that your metabolism gets slower as you age. You will have to work harder and harder to keep it off (take it from the post menopausal lady here) Not that I won't have to work even with the sleeve, I just know it is a tool that helps most people who get it. BUT, you have to do what works for you. I am awaiting approval from insurance. I know I will have cold feet, I have had surgery before and it was pretty terrible. I just know I can't lose this weight and keep it off forever on my own. For me, that's the deciding factor.
  16. Had my first fill June 17th and I could tell very little difference from before I got my fill. Could I be ready for another fill already? I haven't lost any weight since my fill. Also, what exactly does restriction feel like or will I just know? I can eat more than 4oz but try to limit myself to no more than 8oz per meal.

  18. My weight loss should start improving .. My incisions are finally healed and that means I can get in the pool. I will be waterwalking 2 nights a week. I would love to do more- but on the other nights the pool is just to crowded for Water walking. I have arthritis and have had a knee replaced , so I W.W. because it is so low impact. I am diabetic and it took extra long for incisions to heal.

    Water Walking

Hello Cruzlady, I've never heard of Water walking. Sounds like fun. Can't wait till my pool is warm again so I can add that to my exercise regimen. Maybe you can get yourself a couple of 5 lb weights and do some arm exercises as well. Best of luck to you, Donna

    I'm back....

Welcome to the Banded Gentry Rae! Great work on the weight loss, wow! Oh my gawd, I have to laugh because I don't think Tacoma has many trees at all! I remember what it was like around here when I was a little girl and feel like there are hardly any trees left! Heh, I spend 9 months a year in exile in your neck of the woods Rae, and I have to laugh and laugh. My DH and I took a drive through the Carriboo National Forest in SE ID and we were confused because we couldn't find a forest....

Anyone Bandsters who are also into CrossFit?

I just wondered if you're still here and if you're still CrossFitting... I have been doing CrossFit for about a year now - and when I eat the Paleo diet I lose some but since it's so restrictive I haven't been able to do it month after month. I'm way stronger and can do a lot more since starting Cross Fit but still feel so ridiculous being the "fat" crossfit girl and also know I'm not getting it's full benefits since I haven't lost a lot of weight so I'm finally doing this. I'm excited too. I just wondered how long I'd need to wait from getting my surgery (the 29th) to going back? My dr. suggested a full month because of the liquid diet and the surgery itself so I'm taking the months of June and July off but also really nervous to start back and tear something Just wondered how your experience was going since you last posted about it last year.
  22. I think a big reason people on weight loss forums are at goal weight is because they have remained cognizant of the weight loss process and because they feel like they contribute to the forums as a person who, for whatever reason, has been successful. I'll be honest, if I started gaining weight I probably wouldn't post on here a lot because I wouldn't be thinking about my weight (or trying not to) and I'd be ashamed. As for the keys to success, I think in the long term the biggest is to do what works for you, which takes some trial and error. I was never a rule-follower. I drank with straws, I always drink with my meals, I didn't pay a lot of attention to Protein, I eat crackers, I had chocolate a few months after surgery and a few sips of champagne to be polite 3 weeks after surgery. I almost never sit down and eat an actual meal, I mostly eat when I feel hungry and I snack a lot. I used to be big on sweets, but while they often make me feel sick, I really don't have any big cravings for them anymore. When I am somewhere with sweets, I just don't eat any. The one thing I found consistently is that when I sweets, I absolutely gain weight. If I stay away from them, I have a lot more flexibility in my diet. I weigh myself everyday and write the number in a little calendar. I don't workout a lot anymore because I have found I can be lazy and maintain at goal. I think the one thing that has worked for me is the daily weigh-in. Last November I woke up after Halloween at 137, which is 8 pounds over my goal and the most I had weighed since hitting goal. It took me until January to get back to goal, but it was a good lesson that had I not been weighing myself everyday I would have had a lot more than 8 pounds to lose. When surgery is over and your stomach is healed, it comes down to what you can do for the rest of your life. I was not willing to be thirsty during meals for the rest of my life, I wasn't willing to workout every single day for the rest of my life, and I'm not willing to be fat. Somewhere in the middle there is a compromise with myself that has allowed me to be where I want to be and also be happy and live a life that doesn't completely revolve around my weight.
  23. Hello everyone!! I am just a month post-op now and have lost 34 pounds already, so I am thrilled with my progress so far. I know this was the right decision for me, and although I am only one month out, I am concerned about what my body will look like once I am down to the weight I want to be. I know I will have saggy skin/chest, and I knew that was a strong possibility before I decided to have the surgery. Its not something that would have ever changed my mind though. I have watched so many shows about people having skin revision surgeries, and they seem to be in so much pain!! I have had 10 surgeries in my life, so I am no stranger to pain, but, I just don't know if I want to put myself through it. Here are the surgeries I have had: 1) broke my leg in high school so had to have a rod put in my femur 2) had a bone infection for almost a year, so after my leg was healed, they took the rod out 3) c-section 4) c-section (and to add, my boobs are already saggy because of these 2 children, LOL!) 5) gallbladder removed 6) lumbar laminectomy with fusion 7) got infection from the back surgery, so they opened me up to clean it out 8) had to go back in again because of the infection 9) had cyst removed from my palm 10 gastric sleeve My back surgeries were by far the most painful surgeries I have ever been through, but skin revision surgery really scares me. I don't know what I will look like once I am done, but I can only imagine I will need a lot of work. If I do anything, it probably would only be my stomach and a breast lift. I would probably just live with my arms and legs. The gastric sleeve surgery was probably the easiest surgery I have ever had...that and the cyst removed from my palm. The only pain I really had from the sleeve was from lying on my back for the 2 days I was in the hospital. I cannot lie on my back anymore (comfortably) since I have had my back surgery, so that caused quite a bit of pain. The gastric sleeve itself was almost painless. Anyway, long story short, I was wanting to hear from people who have had skin/chest revision surgeries, and how the pain was for them. I know everyone is different, but I was just interested to hear some stories and if people would recommend it, or say it wasn't worth it. Thanks in advance to everyone!
  24. Well, I weigh about the same as you do and what a surgeon explained to me was that they are seeing significant weight loss with the sleeve alone without having to do the bypass. He said bypass is mainly for people that have larger amounts to lose. If we can get there with the sleeve then why get the bypass? See what I mean. He told me the sleeve was number one choice for me, but if I had diabetes then bypass would be for me. If you don't have any other health issues, I would go with the sleeve!
