    Post recovery time to golf

I am not a medical doc - but I can share my experience of 2 surgeries - lapband implant, removal 10 years later, revision to sleeve. They were all laproscopic surgeries. Incisions are not the big issue - they healed quite readily. Being able to get enough liquids in is much more of an issue. Having enough energy, getting used to all the crazy food phases, mood swings due to hormone changes due to rapid weight loss etc was much bigger deal. I was also warned to be careful for 6 weeks - no heavy lifting (like 5 pound limit!) to avoid creating adhesions. So, deskjobs people often go back to work in 2-3 weeks. I personally felt like HELL for closer to 6 weeks - I would have NOT been up to do business travel within 2 weeks of surgery - it was a big adjustment for me. It was even longer before I felt fully human to be honest, but I was doing normal stuff around 6 weeks or so. I was riding horses about 6-7 weeks post op, for example.

    Diet years down the road

The last few weeks are much better. Once I was able to start adding more normal items to my diet everything became better. Around week 5 when I could add fish and soft veggies, and last week I was able to add salads. The more you are able to eat normal things I think the better. I have not eaten out yet, but I tolerate fish, vegetables, soups, salads very well so far. I have not tried bread, sweets, ice creams or even fruits really unless in my smoothie in moderation. I advanced my diet exactly as outlined in my surgeons booklet. I have not had any issues of intolerance. I have been either very lucky or I’m blessed with a nice stomach! I started my chewable vitamin routine as soon as I was home from hospital. I try to eat when hungry, but if I’m not hungry I’d rather focus on fluid intake than forcing a snack down. Good luck with your revision!
  3. I had an on and off pain in my left side that felt like the type of cramp you would get when you are out of shape and try to run ( a stitch in your side). But I haven't had that pain since month 3 post op though. Are you a lap band patient still?? or have it revised to to something else?

    2018 surgery

I'm just getting started with the revision process in Dayton, Ohio. May I ask what insurance you have that didn't require the diet? I'm just stressing about repeating the process after just going through it last year, lol. Good luck on your journey though! Sent from my Pixel XL using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I had lap band surgery in May 2017. I have a full band, no restriction, and have lost no weight since the procedure. I switched to a new doctor who seems to think the band has slipped and we have discussed revision to the bypass or sleeve. I am just wondering if I will have to go through the 6 months of nutritional visits, psych exam, etc...again since I just completed all of those requirements about a year ago. I just hate the idea of starting over with all of that. I have Molina Medicaid in Ohio. Any input would be appreciated!. Thanks! Sent from my Pixel XL using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. I am having a revision too. My date is February 19 and hopefully I can have everything done at one time. My band had a malfunction and must be removed. I had a CT scan done and I don't think the band did any damage to my stomach. The insurance company approved the surgery. Sent from my SM-T820 using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. New to group I am working towards revision I havea lap and placed back in 2010 lost about 90lbs gained a lot of it back 2 pregnancies! I have type 2 diabetes and tried of taking insulin and pills! I have 3 beautiful children and husband that need me to be healthy! I plan on doing the gastric bypass! Which should help with the diabetes! I have starting the my journey with a consultation, now started a 4 week life styles class will then do a 4 week getting to know your bypass surgery pre/post op class! Then an appointment to schedule my surgery date! I would like to know what kind of protein meal replacements you all recommend? Or any suggestions you may have !
  8. I'm new on here. I was banded in May 2017. Fast forward till now, my band is almost full and I have had no weight loss )other than 17 pounds I lost pre op) and feel no restriction. I switched to a new doctor in Dayton, Ohio last week. He thinks my band is out of place. After discussing my case with him, we decided to schedule surgery to remove my gallbladder and my lapband. I should get that date sometime this week. Then I am going to start the process to get a revision to bypass. The lady I spoke to in the office said I will have to do the 6 month diet again. I am really hoping this is not the case since I just did the diet and all the pre-op test last year. Sent from my Pixel XL using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. I just had a revision from sleeve to bypass on Jan 10th.... how are you guys doing ?

    My weight lost story

I have a band on Tuesday I'm having revision to bypass. I wanted sleeve at first but because of reflux they said it's not a good idea. Many sleevers also revise to bypass, so day after tomorrow Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. I had the revision from band to Bypass on 12/18/17. Due to scar tissue from band surgery, it took the doctor 5 hours to complete surgery. I got out the next day. I’m 56, was pretty tired and took naps everyday for almost a week. I slowly added in activity. Give yourself time to heal, your incisions might be an issue if you go back too early.
  12. Good luck Vernb04! Which surgery are you going to have? I'm in the process of getting approval for revision from lap-band to sleeve. My surgeon won't do them at the same time. I have my band out on Feb 5th and hopefully I will have the sleeve around 3 months after (pending insurance approval). Good luck to you!!
  13. I had band to bypass revision on 12/22. I was fine by the next day and went home from the hospital. Had no problems with liquids. Was walking around. Only needed pain meds at night before bed and the occasional Tylenol. Was off pain meds by the first week post-op. I had a little soreness but nothing too bad. No nausea. Gas pain was gone by about day 3. I took off 3 weeks from work bc I do 12 hour shifts that require physical activity. I could have gone back at 2 weeks. The first week, the main problem was fatigue and weakness. I took a nap every day. Once I could start eating more real food, I had more energy. I have young children and was able to take care of them the first week. Recovery from this has been better than the band for me.
  14. Question for anyone on here that recently went through a revision from band to bypass. How is recovery? I have read many positive recoveries for bypass, but is there a difference when it includes a revision from band? Some people were ready to conquer the world at one week, others needed 6 weeks to get back into work. Obviously different work duties will dictate, but how long until you felt you could go about a normal day following surgery? I am having surgery on February 8th, a thursday, and had hoped to be up for light duties the following Monday.
  15. I am currently looking at having a revision from gastric bypass done 11 years ago to DS. After meeting with the surgeon yesterday it has left me feeling very confused as to what to do. The whole thing about 3 monthly blood tests and the nutritional stuff leading to being very ill is worrying plus what I want to to be restricted in what I can eat, would a revision to a sleeve do that, is the DS the best option for me. Any advice would be much appreciated please. Plus how long for recouperation. Op is due on 9th Feb and I have a friend arriving from Canada and we have 3 days away in Cornwall booked on 15th which is about 2 1/2 hrs drive for me back on 18th then Eurostar to Paris for 2 nights on 19th. I m worried it’s gonna be to much and I won’t be able to drive even with it being an automatic.

    Any January 2018 Sleevers?

I had revision from Lap band to sleeve on the 8th. My procedure was done all at once, removal of Lap band and sleeve. My surgeon said there was a lot of scar tissue that he removed and he was pleased with the surgery. I saw the results of my contrast swallow (leak test) and it said I had dilated gastric fundus most likely related to the band. I'm 4 days post op and since yesterday I've been able to drink 3 protein drinks a day plus get all my water in. A friend of mine had surgery the same day and she can barely get the water down. I'm so afraid I will be that one person that this doesn't work for. Anyone have experience with the revision?

    Disappearing lapbanders

Newbie here, I'm scheduled for band over bypass on 1/19/18 and I am extremely excited to start my journey. I was very successful with Gastric Bypass for over 6 years kept off 179 lbs. I've gained 80 in the past 2 years and I was becoming increasingly disappointed in myself. I finally took charge and went on a revision consult. The results showed my stoma stretched not my pouch and the food was emptying too quickly into the small intestine. So I am an ideal candidate for the band over bypass. My surgeon was very encouraging stating this will give me the restriction again. I'm surprised at how many negative thoughts and views are on this particular surgery. It's discouraging to so many on their band journey. Thanks for this forum.
  18. I have been debating on posting all of this because I’m tired of living it day to day [emoji25] I am 4 weeks post op and feel like this is the most horrible decision I’ve made. Here is a list of what has been going on : - I am unable to drink anything other than water and sometimes apple juice or popsicles. Anything thicker comes right back up. Broth, flavored drinks, etc will not stay down. - I have acid that brings me to tears and wakes me up at night (all night), it makes me feel like I’m going to vomit fire. I am currently taking Prilosec, Zantac, Carafate, and Magic Mouthwash. - I’m exhausted because I’m not consuming any protein or other nutrients. I’m exhausted because I try to sleep sitting straight up. Any incline makes the acid worse. - I feel like there is a lump rising up right before I vomit and/or get the acid burn. My doctor is aware of everything that is going on. He said I’m in a small percent that gets this really bad GERD or reflux and later down the road we might have to do a sleeve to bypass revision. I’m really not okay with that option because I had complications after the sleeve surgery. He isn’t really worried about my lack of nutrients at this point because I’m “only” 4 weeks out. I know guys, only four weeks, but in all honesty I’m miserable 24 hours a day. I have kids, I have a full time job, and I seriously can’t continue like this. I was also told I now have sludge in my gallbladder so it may need to be removed later. If anyone can relate to this or tell me it will all be okay I would really appreciate it. I’m at my breaking point and am very disappointed in myself for electing to have this surgery.
  19. I can't get my old username to work so I had to create a new account but I used to post on here a lot. A little background on me. I had the gastric sleeve in July 2014. I never felt I had the restriction I was supposed to from this surgery. When everyone else was posting they couldn't eat a whole egg or yogurt, I was thinking are they nuts. I could eat that and not feel any fullness at all. My starting weight was 290 and through tracking and monitoring everything I ate, my lowest I got down to was 210 and it took over a year to get there. And then I stopped and got stuck there for months and months. Nothing worked, decreasing calories, increasing calories, changing exercise, nothing. Every time I visited my doctor's office I mentioned my lack of restriction and their advise was "just keep eating your protein and tracking your food". Honestly, I felt like I was doing a weight watchers program again because the lack of restriction I had. Fast forward to now and I have regained 40 of the pounds I lost. For the most part, I'm still watching what I eat, but when you have the ability to consume almost a full entree when you go out to eat, it makes it hard to stay on the program. In the fall of 2016, I finally got my surgeon to check the size of my pouch and he stated it's enlarged and I now have a hernia too. After going through everything in 2016 for a revision, i found out my insurance had a one bariatric surgery per lifetime benefit and would't budge on approving it. At this point it was too late for me to switch to my husbands insurance for 2017. I now have finally switched to his insurance and hoping the revision can finally happen. My surgeon is stating he can either do a resleeve or switch me to a gastric bypass. I choose the sleeve because I didn't like the idea of all the vitamins that are required with the bypass surgery and some of the negative long-term effects I heard about. I'm now considering the bypass because I don't want to get resleeved and be back in the same situation a couple years from now. Has anyone had the sleeve to bypass revision for weight loss? I realize weight loss will be slower with a revision. Can you advise what kind of success you had after the revision or any issues you are having afterward? Thanks for all that reply. On another note, I'm not looking for "this is just a tool and just because you can eat a full entree doesn't mean you should" replies. If I had a sleeve that worked like it was supposed to, I probably wouldn't be posting this.
  20. I had my revision from lap band to a bypass on Dec. 12th In Mexico, The surgery went fine and I’ve had some normal issues, nausea, left pain, and tired, nothing horrible. But going into the third week when I started puréed foods the nausea started getting really bad and my back hurt so much I literally couldn’t catch my breath. I went to my Dr who had agreed to do my follow up I the states and got a prescription for pain and nausea, he also said I needed a CT scan, which I scheduled for 5 days later. I didn’t feel it was an emergency, and the Dr said “as a precaution “ so I wasn’t in a hut. Well, Yesterday I get a phone call to go to the hospital ASAP I had a leak! My phone call came st 2:30 and by 6:00 I was in the operating room. I was so scared, the Dr came right out and said that this is life or death, I went in for exploratory laproscopic with the understanding that he may have to open me up to find the leak. I was very fortunate that his first try was where the leak was. He flushed out the area and removed the abscess, and drained 85cc of pus from the area. He said I was very lucky it had been contained to one area. He put a feeding tube in the part of the stomach not bypassed and I will be on a feeding tube for at least 4 weeks. I can’t even drink water so that all the infection can heal. I also saw an infection control dr. And he put me on 3 different IV antibiotics for 3 weeks minimum. I’m in ICU now, and a little confused if I will need to stay in the hospital or will be able to have home nursing. It’s too soon to tell. But he said I could be on the hospital for up to a month. I’m really confused, I’m on a morphine pump which isn’t helping. The Dr said leaks happen and it has nothing to do with the skill of the surgeon or following directions, which I have to a T. But leaks are a very big deal! I thought the leak would be repaired and then things go bank to normal. I never thought I would be the 1.5% to develop a leak. I’m strong and usually bounce back quickly, but this has me on my butt! And I have a very long recovery road ahead. I’m so scared the infection may spread and poison my body and I’ll die. I guess I just needed to rant a little and make sure everyone understands you could be part of the 1 percent.

Change to type of surgery in surgey

I have only had the sleeve but I had to sign something that gave him permission to switch from laprascopic to open if he HAD to. Without the permission up front they would need to abort the surgery, wait until I was recovered from the anesthesia, ask if I was willing to go open and reschedule for later. I recently read about somebody on one of my FB groups that was going in for a revision and she had so much scar tissue that the doctor couldn't do the revision so he closed her up. I don't remember if she was having an RNY revised or going from lap or sleeve to RNY. Therefore I don't think the consent form is that unusual. Better than waking up with no revision and having to reschedule at a later date.

    Twisted sleeve

My surgeon says strictures can happen to anyone but they are mostly a concern for revision patients (lapband to sleeve) and a smaller bougie used during surgery. This was one of my major concerns because a friend of mine had to have a revision to bypass because of a twist. They tried dilation 6 times before they tried the stent. And eventually there was just nothing that could help other than a revision. I guess the point is she tried dilation 6 times and a stent before she gave in to bypass.. My opinion is keep trying that 3rd or fourth dilation may be the one that really helps. Most of us pick sleeve because we really don't want a bypass.. this is why I don't think some surgeons should shrug off a stricture like it's an easy fix..because sometimes it's not and its' important for people to know.

    BCBS Fed apprival

Just got notification from my surgeon’s office manager advising me that I had been approved for revision from Band to bypass. Request was submitted Monday, with approval received today, Wednesday. My requirements were 3 nutritionist visits, psych, and 2 years medical history. I was very surprised at the speed in which my approval was given.

    Revision Approved!

I know this is fairly old but I'm hoping for a reply. I have the Lapland and I would like to get a revision because it is not keep saline....I believe it leaking because every time I go back in for a fill, I always leave with 5cc. How was the process for approval? Did you have to do the 12 months documentation? Thanks in advance for your reply!
