pre-op diet help plz!
Diana_in_Philly replied to dnb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My group had me on under 1,000 calories a day with 60 grams of protein, almost no carbs and very low fat to shrink the liver. Plus 64 ounces of water. To get to that I would have a shake in the morning (30g), a salad with protein (grilled chicken) and balsamic vinegar as dressing at lunch (I could put in about 4 cups of lettuce for about 40-50 calories) and then dinner would be whatever protein I made for the family with another salad. If I needed more protein, I would have an Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt for 15 grams and 120 calories. Sugarfree popsicles, jello and broth were all available as well. -
Sleeved 5/25/17: why do I feel like I am eating too much?
2_tee replied to 2_tee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not on soft/purée foods yet, my doctor has a step in between were you can start on yogurt, sugar free pudding, cottage cheese etc.... I have been eating only Greek yogurt the candy kind isn't allowed. It might b ether flavors that are easy to take, but I also space them out by a few hours so it's not like I'm sitting there downing Greek yogurt 🤣 I have heard that the restriction doesn't come till starting the soft foods... the scale finally broke and I lost a lb. I think I just mis chewing things [emoji31] I appreciate the feedback! -
I avoided most fruit while I was losing. I've been at goal for three years now and have fruit almost daily. I try to do it with protein like berries on my Greek yogurt or peanut butter on apple slices or banana in my protein shake.

Sleeved 5/25/17: why do I feel like I am eating too much?

Are you on soft foods now, or just eating yogurt along with full liquids? My diet was advanced to mushy foods today and I had my first meal (LF refried beans). Over the last few days on full liquids I didn't feel much restriction and could take my fluids and protein shakes easily and had a few times where I felt legit hungry, but when I tried the beans today I couldn't take more than a few spoonfuls. The restriction will come. As far as yogurt.. there's lots of different types. There is the dense, greek-style that has a good amount of protein, and then there are sugary low protein types that I call "candy yogurt." I haven't dug into my yogurt yet, but I imagine the candy yogurts will not provide much restriction. Something like Fage would probably be more filling. I have also heard some people say that yogurt is a slider for them, regardless of brand. So there's that possibility. -
No. And I've lost 135lbs and maintained the loss for three years now. My plan was low carb high protein. The less processed the better. Real mayo has lower carbs and chemicals. When they remove the fat they add simple carbs (sugar) to replace it so full fat mayo is a better choice on my plan. But here's a suggestion, try plain Greek yogurt instead of either. I love Fage and you can use the 0% fat if that's what works on your plan. Get in some protein that way! Back to the eggs... I tried them every possible way and they were the one of last things that kept bothering my stomach.

Depending on the yogurt it might have a lot of sugar. Do they have more than 5g of sugar per serving? Everything you are "eating" is a liquid. So there is no reason you shouldn't be able to have them. Depending on the type of yogurt it isn't much thicker than a protein shake. You don't lose every day, or every week. I would just check the nutritional value of the yogurt. -
2 weeks post-op, only two pounds down
LunaCantu posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello my name is Andrea I had my sleeve two weeks ago and I have only lost two pounds. This is really discouraging. Is this normal. I am following my dr's orders to the cue. The only think I do cheat is that I put a little honey in my yogurt but everything else is perfect. I'm drinking my protein and my water as well as my broths and soups. I can't believe that after two weeks of only consuming liquids to the equivalent of no more than 800-900 calories a day I saw so little loss. I almost cried when I went to my dr today. What am I doing wrong? I am really depressed about this, especially since I hear of people losing so much weight at the beginning. My weight on the day of surgery was 240 now I'm at 238, -

So I am buying my 2nd week mark in 3 days but I feel like I am able to take in a lot more that what it seems I should be. I have no problem getting water down (some gas bubbles here and there but nothing painful) and same thing with my protein drinks. Now that I can eat yogurt I and able to eat at least 4 yogurts a day (they are 5.3oz each) I eat 4 which give me 60g of protein and I have been drinking my water. But I haven't any restriction or "full" feeling. Also once I moved to yogurt I haven't lost anything for 4 days now... is any of this normal? -

May 30th is my surgery date anyone else with me that day??
hmills653 replied to lisaG27's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had mine 5/31. Feeling better today than I have been. So far I've gotten 52 oz between flavored water and protein shakes today. I have Greek yogurt worth my pills in the morning and then work on it throughout the day when I can't stand another sip of protein shake. Judy glad I'm able to get a much in now than the last few days. But keep thinking of pepperoni for some reason. Like I really want a pepperoni. Oh well, soon enough. Joann454 replied to lisaG27's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery the 5/22 and am still on full liquids. I have shakes (so tired of them), fat free no lumps yogurt (Dannon makes an 80 calorie one that's decent), sf popsicles, and tomato soup. Good luck! -

Curious Mi replied to lisaG27's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my surgery on the 30th. The doctor said thebsurgery went very smooth. However, I did have problems with severe nausea first 3 days , and sever gas pains. The gas has finally started to get undercontrol and nauseau is very well conrolled. Maybe once a day at most now. I am now on full liquids but only have added greek yogurt because I cant stomach the protein. But greedily I want to wat mostly because Im tired of broth 😕 any ideas on what else to eat on? -
Yeah it was moving onto things like yogurt/refried beans/cottage cheese. Was done with broth/sf jello/sf pops.

Hi y'all, I'm seven weeks out on this rollercoaster. Its had its highs and its lows! I wanted to share some of my personal experiences so far, in case it is of help to anyone. To start off: I'm around 50% of the way to goal after 7 weeks and numerous inches lost. Which is amazing! But please bear in mind that I was a low BMI patient so I expect to lose slowly as I'm starting off nearer goal than many. I hope that I can make goal, but I know it will be hard work! It has been hard work so far! Sometimes I kinda miss eating whatever I want all the time, but my overarching emotion is RELIEF that I am freed from the tyranny of overeating and feeling like I need huge portions to be satisfied. The first month out was tough. While in the hospital, I did experience some pain from the surgical gas, and nausea. But it passed. I walked as much as possible. Best advice anyone gave me in the hospital? In those very early days, "don't trust a fart!". Lol, but she was right. Just putting it out there Once out of the hospital, my incisions (internal an external) did hurt for almost a month - an abdominal binder was a lifesaver. I had a wrap around one for sleeping and a corset like one for under clothes. It hurt to cough, sneeze or laugh. But now they do not hurt any more! Many others (those who have had c-sections for example) didn't find the incision pain that bad, clearly they are more hardcore than me 😉 Days 5-10 after surgery were the worst. I was 'hungry' and sick of broth, jealous of others food. I was still a little in pain and liquid tylenol made me sick. I was mad grouchy and tired from lack of calories. I didn't do much expect sleep and walk a little. I was back at work but working from home. Don't think I was at my most productive 😉 I worked from home for about 2 weeks after surgery, and felt like I needed it. I also experienced some back pain which I think is muscles shifting from weight loss. It feels better now my body is catching up with my weight loss. I didn't feel any restriction really until I was on solid foods. I was worried about it! And now I feel that restriction with a vengeance! I still get hungry. I feel like I am hungry every 2.5 hours! So I eat pretty regularly. Until recently I was eating a lot of 'protein products' like the protein pudding and Veg Chili from bariatric pal but felt I should move on to more dense solids to help me be more satisfied. As per the instructions of my surgeon, I moved onto solids around day 30. Initially, I had to struggle to eat 800 calories. The NUT said she wanted me on 1000 calories by 5 weeks. Now more appetite has kicked in - I could probably eat this relatively easily depending on what food I choose!! And thats a bit scary. So I am being extremely diligent in weighing all my portions and counting calories on MFP. This surgery does not release you from that! Well, for me anyway. I am scared about being on 1000 calories as it has slowed my weight loss down, but I want to be healthy and not screw up my metabolism, so I do what I can to eat a balanced diet at 900- 1000 calories and drink plenty of water. I havent been exercising more than walking to date, but now that I feel healed and am on higher calories, I will kick it into gear with strength training to tone. Stalls are a thing. Also I've seen the scale go up. It has gone back down again afterwards, so I try not to be too shocked by that and do not let that discourage me. I don't know the solution for stalls, but Im trying tweaking calories, water and exercise to see about kicking myself out the stall. I have experienced some acid reflux, which I never had before. Which is a bit of a bummer. I get it to varying degrees after I eat and sometimes when I drink. Should I go to the doctor for this? Tums and Gaviscon don't seem to do much. I have read that acid can make you think you are hungry, and I wonder if thats whats causing my 'hollow' feelings at the moment...? I got to around 1350 calories the other day thanks to some cheese and a cupcake. Most calories I have eaten in a LONG while. First sugar I have had since pre-surgery. I was annoyed with myself, but it isn't the end of the world. It could be that, time of the month, or I am just a damn hungry person!! Given these hungry feelings I do have to employ my willpower not to graze constantly. One method of doing this is drinking water. So you aren't allowed to drink and eat at the same time. I've found that hard!! Its like a Pavlovian response for me...I am preparing a meal, and I get thirsty. I am super thirsty after I finish the meal, but know I have to wait an hour to drink. (Sometimes I cheat and have a sugar free ice pop after eating as it staves off the thirst). But I make a conscious effort to drink between meals. So when that 'hungry' feeling comes, I go first to drinking water before I snack. That then prohibits me from snacking for an hour!! My eyes are bigger than my belly. Literally. I have recently been invited over to friends houses for dinner and didnt weigh my portion like I usually do. I also introduced some new foods which I hadnt tried yet - sweetcorn and broccoli. I must have eaten too quickly because DAMN i felt soooo uncomfortable for at least 2 hours afterwards, like I had swallowed a bowling ball. I got the crazy hiccups and was bringing up tons of foam and saliva. It was not pleasant. This has happened a few times since I've been on solids. Obviously I need to work harder at slowing down my eating which was always a problem for me pre-surgery too. Mentally I'm feeling pretty good. I am happy with the weight I have lost so far and already feel soooo much more confident. I don't hide from pictures or shy away from meeting new people. I havent been drinking alcohol yet so probably get a bit more bored when socializing, but the results make it worthwhile. So this is my experience so far. Wish me luck for getting the next 50% of my weight off! I have a feeling its going to be slow going. But as long as its going, its good! Critique my meal plan! (this is mostly what I eat, with variations...sometimes I'll have 1oz ezekiel cereal and milk for breakfast, sometimes a bit of fruit...dependent on whats around. Some days I can eat all of this and some days, bits will be left from each meal) Breakfast at home 7am 1/2 premier protein shake At work 9am 1 whole egg 2oz low fat cottage cheese Snack 11am 2oz deli turkey wafer 1x 2% cheese stick Lunch 1pm 2.5 - 3 oz Salmon/fish fillet (have been eating bariatric pal veg chilli entree for the last few weeks but trying to move off that) 1oz Green beans Snack 4pm 2.7oz tuna 1oz avocado / 1oz light cottage cheese / 1oz light cream cheese After work 6pm 1/2 premier protein shake Dinner 8pm 2.5-3oz chicken 1oz Spinach MAYBE 1oz beans sometimes or 1oz roasted sweet potato Snack 9/ 10pm 1x 4oz greek yogurt maybe 1x sugar free popsicle Drinking: 64oz calorie free liquids: water, herbal (caffine free) tea eg mint, arnica, chamomile, crystal light Exercise: 40 mins walking a day

I'm so sick of shakes and yogurt. Two weeks out and I have my follow up in two days. I'm asking (begging) to be released to puréed foods. People's lives depend on it!

How much can you eat?
erwos replied to heylizzyclay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm about 6 weeks out, and I can usually eat 2-3oz of dense-ish protein (chicken and egg salad coming to mind) in a sitting. Mushier stuff like bananas or yogurt, probably about ~5.5oz. But my stomach also healed MUCH faster than a lot of other people's seemed to, so YMMV. -
How much can you eat?
Apple1 replied to heylizzyclay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It depends on what the food is. Yogurt or cottage cheese I can eat 4oz, but dense protein like chicken or ground turkey only 2-3oz. I weigh my food so 1 cup doesn't mean much to me. How much does that 1 cup of food weigh? I am only 3 weeks post op though so keep that in mind. -

Your plan is much clearer than mine. To be honest I have been taking the puréed to mean chew very well before swallowing. I just can't imagine blending my meat. I have been eating veggies most of last week though they weren't on my plan till this week. I only eat a few bites anyway because like you said there is only so much room in our stomachs. I am able to eat at the most 3-3.5 oz total depending on what I am eating. If it is yogurt or cottage cheese I can eat close to 4 oz, but if it is chicken or ground turkey only 2-3oz. Cereals are added on my plan this week ,but I do not know if i will eat any of them. I have never been much of a cereal eater anyway. Here is what my week 4 looks like -
I was sleeve 5/31 and had trouble getting fluids in as well. I felt too full. I'll share what helped for me but If still get a hold of your dr. Last day in hospital I was only about to get 8 oz water in. Today a few days later I'm getting 4 to 6 oz an hr. Including protein drinks and Greek yogurt. I feel like cold goes down better. I found a flavored water beverage very mild mango flavor with no calories etc. It goes down easier than regular water. I literally had to set a timer every 5 minutes and even though it hurt take a sip and reset the timer for another 5 mins. If I felt to full I'd get up and walk around and sip as I walked past my drink. I have the Amazon dot so I just told Alexa to set a timer for 5 mins. It was a really rough day but made such a difference. I think getting more fluids down is helping the gas to finally start moving as well. Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

No Negative Comments! Did anyone cheat during Pre op
gwbicster replied to Misha42000's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My diet allows Greek Yogurt (the 80 calorie ones with fruit, thank God), protein shakes, broths, and my nutritionist says that if I don't tell the doctor I can have a chicken breast if it gets too difficult. I misinterpreted her (or I chose to hear what I wanted) so during the first week I had a chicken breast nearly every day, but after talking to her and clarifying that it can't be every day, now it's every other day or less. I hope that isn't enough to mess up my surgery, but I don't think so. Because my plan seems reasonably lenient I haven't really been tempted to cheat other than the chicken breast, but that might be also because I'm eating SO MUCH soup I have it coming out of my ears... The first day was the worst as I was at work and was extremely light headed- I probably should not have driven home because I don't really remember how I got there. But after that it's gotten better. And I've lost 10 ponds in 10 days! A week until surgery and I can see the "finish line" (although I know in reality this is just the beginning of my long journey to a new me). I'm proud of me! And, anyone who is struggling, I feel you, I really do. Try to focus on what you've accomplished with gratitude and don't give in to the guilt that we all put on ourselves for being obese. This is part of the issue- between the ears- that we will need to work on once this new tool becomes part of our lives. Good luck and good thoughts! -

I just actually ate some chicken. Can't get very far on it, but it feels just fine. I've eaten eggs, shrimp, hamburger meat, multi grain pretzels, cooked veggies, and of course all the soft things as well. What does your doc allow at this point? I would think you'd be about where we're all at now. You can't stretch your little tummy hon. It's only restricted now due to swelling. About 3 months post we should all be able to handle a bit more food then the little nibbles we're taking in now. At 6 months even more because the stomach should be healed. So the more healing, the less swelling and the more capacity we can have to eat. The yogurt would have been easy to get down, so don't worry about finishing a whole one or thinking you overdid it. It basically turns in to liquid. We can do a lot more with liquids than solids. If it were like chicken, you will feel like you can't go anymore. -

Given that we had the surgery on the same day.. does it hurt your stomach or put pressure on your stable line when u eat chicken and veggies? I thought i messed up when i had a little bit of mash potatoes.. i put sour cream on it to make it softer.. i was on a date and my date doesnt know about my surgery so i had to play it off.. of course i had to pack it to go and then gave it to him to take home. But i aas worried that mashed potatoes were too much.. plus another question.. earlier that day i actually finished a whole yogurt my stomach felt soo fulll i started getting scared that i stretched something... how do i know if my sleeve is still good? Im scared of the full feeling. -
Anyone lose more than 50lbs in this age group (over 60) ?
lightnfit replied to Reddrobin's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Mom2tess - I record calories on Fitness Pal. Try to stay 1000 to 1200 calories. I eat low carb. Some days a total bomb with calories, if something special going on. I wear a Fitbit - try to get those 10,000 steps in. I do Zumba usually 4 days a week. Fun exercise, if u like to dance. I have had several stalls. If I'm doing what I'm supposed to do, I do not worry about it. Weight loss very slow now. Weigh about 2 times a week. I still have a large appetite. Bummer! Favorite snacks Greek yogurt (Fit and Light - 80 calories, plus 1 tablespoon slivered almonds ), deviled eggs made with Hellmans light mayo, dijon mustard, no sugar added sweet relish, salt and pepper - very filling, and dry roasted almonds. Hope this helps! Sent from my SM-T550 using BariatricPal mobile app -
My program had puree and other heavy liquids/mushes in the hospital (scrambled eggs, yogurt, etc), continuing at home and progressing to other soft proteins as tolerated the first month, with liquids as needed for protein, etc. It's curious that you had that liquid pre-op diet - most of the programs that I have seen that have the experience and confidence to use a fairly quick post op progression don't do any extensive pre-op dieting (we just had the normal day before GI surgery liquid diet and clean out.)
