    Stalls

Here is a great article on what's happening - http://www.dsfacts.c...or-plateau.html You will note that she mentions that the depleted glycogen and the Water that keeps it soluble accounts for about ten pounds of body weight, so there is that much in play that your body is trying to restore, so a bit of gain is not unexpected. I routinely gain 3-4 lb when I travel for a week, which is primarily water retention from (presumably,) the higher sodium in restaurant food and my altered exercise and activity routine - there is no way that my caloric deficit has shifted the 10-14,000 calories to account for that being genuine weight gain (and it drops off a few days after resuming normal routines at home.) Glycogen and sodium influences are just two factors in our biochemistry that influence water retention that can create temporary scale weight stalls or minor increases. Stair step loss is usually the word of the day - some will lose more smoothly while others will be a 2-3 down, 1 up type of loser. Ensuring that your water consumption if in good standing, (the classic 64 oz per day, more if exercising or in hot, humid conditions) will counter-intuitively help relieve such water retention as the body tends to hold on to water more aggressively when it is in short supply. These early stalls do tend to break themselves since it's hard to get the calories high enough to stop the genuine weight loss. Later on, the main thing to watch for is that your calories haven't crept up to the point that you are putting yourself into maintenance before intended. There are all kinds of advice on how to break stalls and I don't know if any of them have any real validity (it's tough to measure the effect of a change when it takes some time to recognize that you are in a stall, take some action in response and allow some time for it to take effect - how much of the break was your response to the stall and how much was your body's normal response had you done nothing?) Lots of ideas are out there - ultra low carb, higher carbs, carb or calorie cycling, increasing or changing exercise routines, etc. From my experience (with a study sample of one!) I never really had any stalls (my definition being a week without loss,) and I maintained a moderately high carb intake (relative to the classic low carb under 40g rule) in the 70-100g range, and somewhat higher later on during loss when I selectively added a bit more complex carb to improve exercise endurance, Speculatively, I never let that glycogen level totally deplete and maintained a more constant fat burning rate - the hypothesis behind the Atkins/ketogenic diets is to keep the glycogen levels at a minimum so that it depletes and forces the body to burn more fat more quickly to make up for it. As I was also a relative lightweight (5'10" and 290 to start) I didn't feel the need speeding things up any more than what the VSG already does on its' own, and didn't want to get involved in the common side effects of those diets (I lost the 105 lb that I needed to lose in about seven months, and have been maintaining that for the past year.) A further note - once you do start losing again, your loss rate will be somewhat lower as the glycogen that you burn initially burns quite quickly, while the fat that you start burning after the glycogen depletes burns more slowly, but you will be doing what you are here to do - burn fat! Good luck!

    gaining some weight

I think a little weight gain is normal but be very wary. For me, when I see my weight gain more than a couple of pounds I try to diet. If that doesnt work I go atkins untill my appetite and habits are under control. I also increase excercise it helps to control appetite. be very careful of carbs they can give you the urge to eat. I think that urge- appetite- is more of an enemy than real hunger. I think it will always be a battle for us but keep up the fight and dont feel discouraged. You got this far already !

    gaining some weight

How much weight gain are you talking? A small 1-3 pound fluctuation or an actual gain? Also, how many calories a day are you eating?

    ordered my first white wine

Now that it is morning, I want to summarize my first fine dining experience post op: 1. One glass of wine is enough to get really intoxicated. It lasted about 45 minutes before wearing off. I sipped it before eating. I could experience all the "full" flavors of the fine white Chardonnay. 2. Two glasses was too much. I only got 1 sip into it and my body said " no." I wasted the money on the second glass, but at least I know now. 3. Had a nibble of bread for first time. No issues. 4. Had a small bite of spaghetti. No issues. 5. No hang over in the morning. Feel fine. 6. lips are slightly burning. I do not know if this was from wine or not. Anyone know? 7. Had 2-3 small spoonfuls of my wife's dessert ( some round chocolate ice cream scoop with chocolate powder on outside). No issues. First "sweet" since surgery. No issues. 8. No weight gain in the morning. In fact, down 2 lbs. it was probably from waking up my metabolism from all the new food experiences and lots of dancing and jumping around at the Muse concert we went to last night (by the way, most awesome concert, epic). Maybe it was from my 5 mile run yesterday. Don't know. I am going to run again today perhaps even further (training for upcoming race). 9. Only had room for about 3 ounces of veal Parmesan after the pre dinner wine. Rest of it was put on ice for future meals. Overall, sleeve was ok with wine, bread, spaghetti and sweet dessert. No rejections, but a little slime after done eating and some uncomfortable cramping for a couple hours. Feel fine today except the slight tingly feeling on my lips. Eating at the Italian resteraunt was completely worth it for the fine food and drink selection. It won an award for Best Italian in America for 2012. Would I drink wine, eat Pasta or dessert again? Probably not. I didn't enjoy it as much now as I did 2 years ago when dining in Roma. It was good for me to at least find out if I would enjoy it or not by taking a small bite of each. What a night for "first experiences" as a seasoned post Sleever!

  6. Hi! I am new here and I just got approved for surgery Feb 12, 2013! I wanted to introduce myself and am so appreciative to find this forum. about me: I have been struggling with weight since about the age of 8. I remember going to weight watchers at the age of 12. After college, I gained 40lbs in one year. I have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which doesn't help with the weight. I love to eat- I eat for all occasions- happy, sad, stress, etc.... BUT I am tired of food ruling my life! I have always lived to eat and I want to change that. I want to eat to live! I gained more weight after two kids and have been quite miserable. I have done many different diets and lifestyle changes but it is typical...lose weight, gain it back plus some. I looked into surgery a couple years ago but my insurance did not cover it. In November, we switched insurance companies and they cover it! Here is my timeline of events: 11-10-12- Information session 11-12-12- Verify benefits 11-12-12- complete and return questionnaires to doctor 11-16-12- view on line EMMI presentation 11-29-12- Bariatric screening with nurse and dietitian 12-10-12- psychological evaluation 1-3-13- Consult with surgeon- Dr. Amir Heydari 1-21-13- Request for authorization for surgery sent 1-24-13- Approved! wow that was fast (though they did not call and tell me until 1-28-13) 1-24-13- 1st pre-op class 1-31-13- 2nd pre-op class 1-31-13- pre-op appointment with surgeon 2-2-13- Begin pre-op diet 2-12-13- Surgery scheduled! I am so excited and nervous all at once. I have prayed for this and God has heard my cry. I know it will NOT be easy but I am so ready for this. Today is my "last supper" before pre-op diet. I am going to the Melting Pot! Good luck to all!

    Work out weight gain?

yes, this is normal. your body is probably in shock. give it a week and i'm sure you'll start seeing loss again. also adjust your diet a little bit. when we become predictable in our diet and exercise the body gets "bored" and sometimes needs to be caught off guard. also muscle weighs more than fat so...that could also be the cause of the weight gain. but to be honest, your weight can fluctuate 2-3 lbs daily depending on certain factors. i wouldn't be too concerned. good luck and keep up the good work! your efforts will certainly pay off in a big way!

    Work out weight gain?

Hi all. I'm 2 and a half months out. I just started really working out. I started trying to do C25K. I'm still pretty big and also out of shape so it's taken me a while to working up to complete even day one. I've done it 3 times this week as well as a 'boot camp' style workout with my best friend one night. I've also been walking in between and doing some floor exercises at home every morning (crunches, jumping jacks etc) Anyway I noticed my weight hasn't moved this week since starting all this. Intact it's gone up. I was 305 last week and now I'm 307. Is this normal? I've been going pretty hard at this, I'm pretty sore and swollen so maybe it's Water weight? Any input much appreciated!
  9. sugar free popsicles are a life saver! Also the first few days I brought home medicine cups from the hospital and the goal was to try and drink one every 15 minutes. wait a few days on protein drinks if you need to as they feel heavier. I also found that the low calorie gatoraide was easier on my sleeve than water, so experiment with fluids. Weight gain is fluid and normal. Welcome to sleevedom!
  10. A thread about weight gain and a stretched sleeve scared her out of surgery?? This one and not one thread from the complications forum scared her but this one did??? Hmmmm Seems weird to me Almost unbelievable
  11. I haven't had surgery, but my understanding is that it's normal for the weight gain. I'm sure you'll see weight loss soon. Good luck!

    So confused sbout birth control!

I have used Depo and it made me soooooo depressed. It also tends to make you crave carbs, hence the weight gain. If neither is an issue for you, it was effective. I currently have Mirena, and it is great!
  13. A couple of things: weight gain should have been a sign that something was wrong. In the hospital, no doctor, nurse, nutritionist or food service would give that much intake to anyone that had abdominal surgery of any kind. It's an immediate red flag. I have no clue if this is a case of an inept group of medical "professionals" or someone pissed that a doc wouldn't sleeve her and is now seeking retribution. We have seen both here - We have seen doctors give less than zero followup and dietary guidelines and we have seen people throw away their guidelines on the way to get a cheeseburger and a shake 5 days after surgery. Lets not feed into the drama. Sent from my iPhone using VST
  14. I got sleeve on the 8 A day after you and I was thinking I am always hungry but I can only sip 3 oz of soup. And I am not able to eat anything solid until 9 week after surgery that is 2 months I was on clear liquid for 2 week before surgery, 3 week after surgery, now on full liquid. What I am trying to say everyone is different while here you can eat egg and 1 slide of turkey ham I had not been able to do none of that. None of the Lessing was recover fast I went back to work on the Monday after my surgery and was walking two mile on that same day. You had loss more weight I had, I had 267 surgery day, I am 255 3 week after surgery. I don't think gaining is possible though but everyone loss weight different. I was losing more weigh before the surgery from 315 on oct 11,2012 to 267 on surgery day. But I agree with you on the protein I had seen some that had lots of calories so maybe that can be the weight gain. Also before surgery I did lot of researches from doctor all over the US and Mexico and see every doc is different and had different way. While some give you the liquid diet before surgery other don't. Some of the Mexican doc don't even tell u you need to drink protein. I called several doc before I chooses mine and I ask lot of questions.

Typical days food intake for vets?

I'm pregnant so I eat more than I used to, but my weight gain is normal for a pregnant lady and I figured it can't hurt to contribute. Here's yesterday which includes two meals out with local Kyrgyz people: Breakfast: Protein coffee (2 scoops Syntrax chocolate truffle with 10 oz. coffee and some ice); later on, 1/3 cup of oatmeal with dried blueberries (homemade) Snack: 1 hard boiled egg Lunch: 1 cup of shorpo-a beef broth soup that has carrots, potatoes and beef, but I skipped the actual beef; 1/2 cup choban (tomato, cucumber and dill salad), a few bites of cabbage salad (a vinegar based slaw, almost) Snack: 1/4 cup dried cranberries and 1 oz. Gruyere Swiss Dinner: 1/2 cup chickpea salad; 1/4 cup plov (rice with lamb, veggies)...after about a billion cups of tea while them men did toasts of vodka, I ate about 1/2 cup of roasted eggplant, zucchini and bell pepper, a small piece of lavash and maybe 1/4 cup of hummus with fresh vegetables Normally I'd have a small snack before bed but I was so thankful to be home (even with my vodka-soaked husband, poor guy) that I went straight to bed with just a glass of Water. I have to really guess on a lot of the nutritional info since I didn't make two of my meals, but MFP has me at roughly 1,300 calories (I aim for 1,400-1,600 a day in pregnancy) so that's not terrible, I guess. And I'd venture that my intake really was closer to 1,500 because I didn't make the food. This, honestly, is real life for me these days. We eat out with our counterparts a lot and I can't control what will be served. All I can do is not eat meat...and they think I'm crazy for skipping that! I drank water between meals and countless cups of green tea...which I paid for when I was up and down all night. Pregnancy is so glamorous. Oh, and I'm about 2.5 years post op. ~Cheri
  17. Ouch, sorry to hear this. Yep, I think that you're probably going to want to reward yourself with some coverup work once you're at goal. None of mine really had a huge impact with my weight gain so they look just fine with my loss. The only one I worried about was the one on my neck...I thought it might get saggy with the loss since my face was so bloated before. But I didn't have an issue so there you go. Good luck and I say worry about it later. If you decide on plastics after that will also impact any tattoos placed in certain areas so wait until you're sure you're done with your body before you get new ones or start coverups. ~Cheri
  18. 120 grams of protein a day plus food intake is exactly what body builders do to bulk up. That is where the weight gain came from... That has been corrected The problem here lies in the fact she feels no restriction since day one and not only no restriction but she has not become ill from eating a normal size meal. She has been posting from the beginning that something was different with her intake levels and recovery. It's one thing to have head hunger and eat and you regret it because you're vomiting or have the slimes with pain in your stomach. She has not had adverse reactions to consumption. I'm positive the reduction in protein intake will help her weight gain but when you have a surgery for restriction then by god you deserve to have that restriction. Restriction is exactly what saves all of us from ourselves.
  19. Hi, I am about 7 weeks out from surgery. I was getting Unjury powder and get emails from them. Several suggest that WLS patients have slowing of weight loss or even weight gain when they transition to food and stop protein supplements because they are taking in more calories. I see in myself that my weight loss has slowed since I am on food and eating less protein supplements. Looking over my Fitnesspal, I am eating more calories but the protein is the same. DUH. Now I do get that Unjury or any other company has the selling of their product as their main goal but the reasoning makes sense. They site dieticians and say that your surgeon knows surgery but unless you have kidney problems, you should use protein shakes so many times a day to lose weight until you reach your goal. So I am thinking of keeping a protein shake for lunch. I like Premier Protein and that gives me 30 grams of protein. Before, I was still using that but sipping some as a snack mid morning and finishing it in the evening to get my protein in. But if I switch to more shakes, I would have less calories for the protein. Yes, I still will eat solid food but I want to get to goal. My doctor said she wants me eating food but I will eat food but have more shakes. Has anyone else tried this approach?

    Any February 2013 Bandsters?

hello! Im confused about where to post for February, is it here or on the monthly forum? I am hopefully getting my surgery date soon, the surgeons office says it will be in about 3 weeks. I am getting excited. I am not telling anyone, just my husband obviously. I do not want any judgement put on me ( which has been my whole problem since I was a child, and has most likely contributed to my weight gain.) I am currently 190lb, and 4ft 11. I may not be as heavy as some of you here, but 190 at my height is very bad! My surgeon would like me to lose 80-90lbs. I have hypertension & sleep apnea. I am a stay at home mom to my amazing 19 month old son, he is our miracle baby, we endured 6 years of infertility, un explained. It was never mentioned that my weight had anything to do with it but I suspected it. After several rounds of ivf, he came along! My main reason for the surgery is so I can be around for him, and hopefully have another baby. Well, that's me, I hope to get to know all of you better, and will post my surgery date soon, I hope!
  24. The barium test is a standard practice among surgeons who specialize in gastric surgeries. It is the best way to ensure there isn't even the slightest leak. It's done within the first 24 hours this way if anything is even detected they can fix it asap instead of waiting for the problem to come up later on. I knew about having the test before I had the surgery it was explained to me ahead of time. Now for me I drink Muscle Milk for my protein. It's 310 calories for 32 grams of protein even drinking that 5 times a day would put u at 1550 calories in just shakes alone. Then add in food. In order to gain 20 pounds in under 7 weeks you would need to average 3 pound weight gain a week. There is no way unless drinking weight gainer protein that someone ONLY 7 weeks out gains that type of weight AND there surgeon tells them they stretched out there sleeve. You CAN NOT stretch out that sleeve on a basic liquid diet it's physically impossible. I have to agree with others that if her surgeon did a sleeve on her and told her that then she needs to see a different surgeon to ensure he is being honest with her in the surgery that he did and 2 that it was performed properly and correctly.
  25. Why the attack? The poor thing obviously didn't get much support from her doctors office and ate what she thought that she was allowed (Cream soups were allowed for me early out...I had creamy potato in the hospital after my second surgery). I also gained not twenty, but FOURTY pounds in the first five weeks, so it's not impossible. I gained it because of my complications causing fluid retention, then on TPN in hospital (IV's etc). There's another thread where the poor gal posted her sisters tragic story and this same thing happened. She got beat to death when she just needed to share her story and was looking for help. If you don't believe the gal, WALK ON BY! Why do you have to beat her up. I also did not have a leak test at the hospital. They are not a 100% guaranteed test given to everyone. What your doctor does Dawg is not what every doctor does. I see this time and time again here, that people boast they have the "top surgeon" one of the "top ten" and yet I see so many names of docs in that top ten that even my 20 years in banking is not necessary to see that there are over ten top tens out there LOL This gal wanted help. Leave her be if you're only here to beat her up. Do you also stop and punch homeless people when you walk by you negative posters? Walk by!!! OP, I was allowed cream soups and things as well but I was limited on the amount. For instance 18oz is just way way way too much for anyone when we're talking cream based soups (or any soup really) and they are calorie packed. I'm wondering if you maybe need to work with a different nutritionist? Or also if you do have surgical issues to worry about. Did something go wrong? That could explain a weight gain. I hope you get to the bottom of it and I'm sorry that you got goober here. People on this site don't like to read about the bad stories. They make it very clear and unwelcome sadly It's human nature I guess, but for those of us who suffered them, it's also very real and our stories should be heard as well. Intelligent people do want to hear them!
