  1. So I had surgery on Monday 9/19 everything went well, I'm now day 5 out I'm feeling tons better gas pains come and go and mainly in my shoulders. My question is, since day 3 when I get up I have to hold my belly. One of my incisions next to my belly button feels like its pulling because of the weight of my belly. They gave me a belly binder to where and yea it does help for the most part but I have to wear it in order to not hold that part if my stomach ... Has anyone else had this problem and how long did it last ? TIA Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App
  2. I see a big difference already, especially at your sides. Before your arms were kind of resting on the sides of your boobs, and you are definitely losing weight right there! As a matter of fact, I see it all the way down your sides and in the way your shirt lays in front, so you must be losing in the front as well! You're doing great so far!
  3. Hi, everyone this is my first post about my surgery. I was to the point of scheduling for my surgery but decided to hold off. Now I'm waiting for my insurance to approve my surgery for the second time. I was doing good at one point and was trying to loose weight and eating slower. But now I'm have lost my motivation. I have been reading of people losing weight before surgery. This is a big concern for me. I'm eating now like no tomorrow. I hate feeling hopeless and lazy to exercise. Anyone going through the same issues. I have no motivation right now. I'm hoping to get sleeved at the end of September.

    Almost 75

I had my band "installed" in 2007 & lost 125 pounds. Like everyone I said "I'll never put it on again. In the meantime my husband of 48 years died..but I still held my own. Some weight came back but I stayed under 200 for several years. A year & a half ago my sister convinced me to go on match.com and I met a wonderful man to whom I been engaged for a year & a half- and then I was so happy that I started to eat again & gain weight! Just about six weeks ago I got enough nerve up to make an appt to see my surgeon - after 2 plus years. I thought he would be furious with me but I was wrong. I took the first steps of seeing the nutritionist and the psychologist and last Friday I got the first fill in over two years. 2 days of liquids then 2 days of soft and tomorrow regular food - but carefully measuring. My fiance is wonderfully encouraging and I have 9 lbs off already. I know it's only fluid but gone is gone and I'm on my way to 50 or 60 lbs - down from 230. I'm 75 years old - work full time - have a man who loves me for what I am - not what I look like and soon will have the body I want again. Wish me luck!
  5. My doctor and surgeon both recommended staying on my antidepressants at least during the first year after surgery due to the hormone fluctuation during rapid weight loss. At first I had thought of getting off them since I believed being overweight led to my depression. However, I'm super glad I stayed on them during these past 11 months. The hormones can get a little crazy through this journey! As I approach my one year mark, I'm thinking I will stay on them at least until I reach my goal weight and then decide whether to stay on them or not. Also at first I had to cut the Wellbutrin in fourths, then halves. This was only for 2-3 weeks and then I was fine to take them whole.
  6. I'm headed in to my Family doc to see if I can talk with him to get some more info from him. I LOVE my doc however I am fairly annoyed with his lack of notes on this. We have been talking for 3 ish years about my weight we have tried different meds and different diets and some would work and some would not but they never worked for long. I'm just annoyed that out of 3 years he had 2 appointments that he submitted to my surgeon.
  7. This is exactly what I needed to read! I have been gaining and losing the same 3 pounds over the past 2 1/2 weeks. I will be six weeks post op Tuesday. I don't know if I am depressed or just having too much fun with an I dont care attitude, but I really screwed up this weekend. Had about 10 glasses of wine, a few tequila shots, a bloody mary, hotlinks, crunchy tacos.... Yeah, it was a fun filled weekend by the pool, but I lost control. I will be doing protein shakes this week to get back on track. Thanks for your post.

    Hmmmmm

Nothing wrong with shrinking your liver ahead of time. It's doubtful that you would need another ultrasound on the liver before surgery so you are unlikely to lose the co-morbitity (if you need it for insurance). In addition to doing the high protein low carb diet to shrink your liver through ketosis, you can also try losing 20 pounds using a traditional diet (for some reason the liver is the first thing to shed fat when you lose weight).

    What is left to do?

YES that is possible. My highest weight was 423 and I am now 331, so about 80 pounds. I have a long path to get to 200 to 225. And I might not need CPAP later, but let me tell you, it does NOT interfere at all with my sleep, so I might just keep using the CPAP...
  11. My surgeon is one my ***'s SoCal experts on revisions. He told me that, regardless of revision or virgin, sleevers fall into two categories: Those who follow the rules, "ace" the mushies phase, learn what a bite size is, and a portion size is, and make the transition to solids well. They lose weight well and maintain it. The other group doesn't follow the rules, blows the mushies phase by eating too much, too often, and too quickly, vomit, go back to liquids, and supplement with crunchy carbs and sliders. They do poorly. He stresses follow-up care and education. He's very strict. I am losing quicker than I did with my Band.
  12. I had similar experiences with binge eating and the band does help me. It limits the volume of the binge. When I am stressed out I want white cake. In the past I would buy a whole cake and several other binge favorites and now I can buy a piece of cake. It takes me two days to get through it and then I am satisfied for a month or so. Most of the time I eat healthy protein and veggies, but I find that if I recognize why I am eating the cake and allow myself to enjoy that cake; I am able to feel the difference between wanting and needing food. Everyone eats for emotional reasons at some point, the beauty of the band is that it slows down the amount and, for me, the frequency of binges. I was low-carb for three years pre-band and re-gained all 130 #s when I stopped low-carb. With the band, I can eat a small amount of carbs with no ill effects, I am eating a more balanced diet and so the carb cravings are less severe. Best of luck and remember it is a process. Lanie
  13. Can only tell you what my doctor said and that was the pre op diet was for the fatty liver problem. He didnt want to have to reschedual the op because he opened people up and found out that he wasnt able to go ahead because of the liver. He did warn me that in some cases even people who had followed the liquid diet scruplously still had to be rescedualed because of liver problems. Friend of mine who went to another doctor was told that she had to lose 20 kilos before he would consider operating as it was just too dangerous at the weight she was at. This was very frustrating for her because as she said ....if she could lose 20 kilos she wouldnt need a band.
  14. My surgeon never gave me a number. He just said that at 365 lbs my liver would be huge and that I should try and lose weight prior to surgery. At the rate I'm going and with any liquid diet that may be required, I should be down 75 lbs when I finally have my surgery.

    Surgery next Wednesday

carolynh, You could talk yourself out of it, sure. In the meantime, read posts here and watch some vlogs online about people who have gone through the journey. It may help ease your nerves. Personally, I'd rather have an organ cut out (literally) than waste one more year being fat. Or one more year fighting like Hell to lose weight and never getting there. Life has been passing me by and I won't let anything stop me from joining it. We're having surgery on the same day. Cheers!
  17. Hello All, I'm new to this group. I started researching the lap band back in October, and have recently been accepted into our local comprehensive weight loss progam, with the intent to have the lap band installed. I've enountered some obstacles, and was hoping to get some input. My clinic wants me to start the South Beach diet (or some other form of low glycemic progam.) This is fine with me, I've done South Beach and have mostly incoporated it into my lifestyle. Problem is, I've been doing it for about 2 1/2 weeks and haven't lost pound one. The clinic called me last week, and my cortisol leve is high (they said normal is 20-50, I'm at 81). So, I have to do a serum cortisol test, which I'm doing next week. Also, my HP pylori is high, and now I'm on a 2 week course of antibiotics and will have to have an endoscope. I'm wondering if my cortisol is the reason I'm not loosing the weight. I'm following South Beach, exercising 3-4x a week. I'm extremely discouraged because I know I have to lose weight before surgery, and I feel I'm doing everything, but I"m not dropping pounds. Any suggestions, or encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  18. Hi all, I was just wondering, in 3 days, I will be 4weeks post op, and have noticed that I have not lost a single pound in 2 weeks. I am starting to obsess that I am doing something terribly wrong. Highest weight ever 164kgs/382lbs Pre op diet start weight 159kgs/371lbs Pre surgery weight 143kgs/333lbs Discharge Hospital weight 147kgs/343lbs (Hospital staff advise this weight gain was Fluid?) Current Weight & Weight 2 weeks ago 132kgs/308lbs I take in small amounts, I am drinking diluted apple or pear juice, and can still only take in 2 tablespoons of food at one time. I am eating 6 x a day if i remember, but usually only 4, and keep up my fluid intake. I'm not 'grazing' and I am actually exercising, so I just dont get this 2 week stall so early in the game. Im feeling super discouraged, and honestly dont know where else to turn for help, can you tell me (anyone) if this is normal? if it would be impossible to NOT lose weight having undergone gastric sleeve? I keep trying to rationalise that for someone who has gone from eating as much as I used to (to get me to my start weight) to nearly eating / drinking bird like proportions, that surely one has no choice but to lose, but this is seeming very far from accurate at the current time. Many thanks to anyone reading/replying Kels
  19. Hi Kels and congrats on joining the losers bench. I also gained quite a bit while in hospital... and was gutted about it, but I knew long term it would work so please, just relax and concentrate on getting in your fluids and Protein. I 'stalled' early....2 weeks out, for a week and then 4 weeks out. I'm now 3.5mths out and losing a nice amount each week. You need to remember you've put your body thru so much, so its just getting used to the fact its recovering from surgery and also your calorie amount going in has reduced so much as well. Don't worry.... it'll happen - I lost 7lbs in 10 days at one point....it literally just fell of me. Good luck Kathy
  20. Many of us are dealing with the guilt that comes with how much damage we've done to our bodies because of the obesity. I've had to have both hips replaced and my knees will have to be replaced as well sometime in the future. I've always felt that I caused this damage because of the excess weight I've carried around for so many years. My rhumatologist kept telling me that I have joint disease and inflammatory disease and this would have happeded regardless. It's hard to believe it but I now understand he's correct. My mother suffers from IBS...irritable bowel syndrome and my sister suffers from hidranentis suppurativa..which is eruptions/boils in the groin, armpit, and under breast area. She saw a specialist the other day who explained to her that this was an inflammatory illness and when she told the doctor about my mother and myself, he said that we're all suffering from inflammatory illnesses, just in different areas of the body and that this is absolutely genetic in origin. Now..it doesn't get me totally off the hook. I might have been able to keep the degeneration of my joints under better control had I been smaller, but at least I know that the outcome would have eventually been the same. We carry enough guilt due to our weight issues so one less thing to feel guilty about works for me.

    How many people....

I wouldn't, maybe I'm vain but unless you're hitting your goal weight this season, you'd be totally out of style lol. And how much more fun and rewarding would it be to go to a store when you actually hit your goal weight?
  22. Sorry to make you go through these questions, I'm just trying to make sure I fully understand what is going on. So, you had the Lap Band done and that is when you first started feeling this pain? And 8 weeks ago you had the revision, and the pain is still present? I would have suggested that it was trapped CO2 gas in your diaphragm. But since it's been 8 weeks, it is highly unlikely that the CO2 gas is still there. Do you still have your gallbladder? The reason I'm asking is because sometimes, when the body loses weight rapidly, the gallbladder can start to fail, and that can cause a gallstone. When there's a gallstone, you can have pain in your back. Have you ever had a HIDA Scan? If not, you may want to consider getting one. Also, you may want to have your spleen checked. In rare cases, the spleen can have a lack of oxygen getting to it, which can cause back pain. I don't mean to alarm you. I'm just thinking of possible reasons. I hate when doctors try to say that nothing is wrong, when someone clearly doesn't feel well. All of this could just be inflammation of the stomach because it is trying to heal, and the pain could be mimicking back pain. Are you getting up and doing a lot? You may need more rest. The ER might be a good choice, because then you'll have a second opinion. Keep us updated.

    Losing Hair?

I've been told that taking Biotin should help - unfortunately, it actually seemed to make me gain weight the days that I used it, eeek. I suppose I'll probably give it another go just to make sure it wasn't just a normal day-to-day weight fluctuation.
  25. that's good to hear and i feel the same way but insurance companies will do whatever they have to do not spend money. it's frustrating, trying to get documentation for weight for at least 5 years (i'm awful about going the doctors) unfortunately my bmi is usually 39.9,obese enough to be unhealthy but not enough to satisfy the insurance companies.
