    Confused

I really dont measure but i have cut my portions tremendously. ive tried to put myself on a schedule, which is really hard. im not a "schedule" type person never have been. i know for this surgery its really important so i have been making a great effort to do so. an idea of what i eat in a day typically is the same most days except for sat/sun. i wake up and take metformin and test my sugars. depending on how tired i am i may get a coffee half decaf with 8 creams and 2 splendas but thats once in awhile. i usually now have a slimfast high protein shake mocha cappuccino and 2 hard boiled eggs with 55units of insulin. then like 3 hours later dannon light n fit greek yogurt, a little bit of fresh fruit and a v8 splash energy 8oz can. lunch is 3- 4 hours later with 55u insulin a sandwich no mayo with just turkey on a grainy bread of some sort or i do a salad if my stomach isnt bothering me. in between snacks and meals im drinking water. late afternoon snack is cottage cheese like 4-5 oz and a high protein bar with low carbs usually a luna bar. then dinner is a proten most of the time is chicken breast some veggies and occasionally a carb. the carb is about 1/2 cup if rice or pasta and 1 cup if mashed potatoes. im not much of a meat eater but ive been trying to push it. then 55units of insulin, my night time insulin and other medications i take. if i cant sleep then i have a small snack like sf jello pr apple sauce or some cheese slices or nothing and just drink water.

    Hesitant on Diet choices

Thanks everyone! I do have to watch my blood sugar so I'm still in the habit of checking carbs first and foremost. I have been doing low carb for a while now so I think I will try to stick with that. I know it is really rough when you stop doing low carb and then try to get back to it! Not a huge fan of yogurt anyways so I'm okay passing that up. I opted for some low sodium tomato / red pepper soup (only half a serving for now).

    Hesitant on Diet choices

Early on healing is the focus. That's why they likely don't want you being terribly restrictive. But you did see with the yogurt the caveat of "low fat", which often is substituted with sugar or sodium or both. The liver converts those extra carbs (i.e. sugar) into fat anyways if you don't utilize the immediate energy it brings, so there's no escaping with gimmicks like "low fat". I had yogurt drinks early on that were 19g of sugar, just didn't have more than one or two a day. Once I was able to eat more protein dense food, I made sure not to touch stuff like yogurt drinks. Nothing that would digest quickly and have simple carbs, unless I needed the energy.
  4. Hi all, I was sleeved on June 9. My doctor requires Days 1-3 clear liquids and Days 4-14 full liquids. I'm close to my 64 oz liquid goals and about 40g of protein right now. In a day I usually have protein shake, several cups of bone broth (throughout the day), vitamin water zero, Protein2o clear protein drink, and water. My list of approved stuff includes cream soups, sf pudding, sf jello, and drinkable consistency yogurts. There are no restrictions listed as far as sugar content, carbs, sodium, fat, calories, etc. I guess in my mind I'm still thinking that way. My husband bought me some low fat yogurt smoothies at Trader Joe's which have 24g of sugar! I think I'm just wondering what's most important to pay attention to? I know I was told my protein shake should have less than 2g of sugar... does that go for everything else? Is low fat super important? I'm going to call my NUT in the morning but just wondering if anyone has any advice. TIA .

    July Sleevers!!!

My doctor is placing me on meal replacement shakes (3x a day and I can eat 2 yogurts as long as they are under 200 calories). This is for 12 days and then clear liquids for the last two days. Double check with your doc office but then again every doc is diff!

    Overweight Failure

I never experienced any problems with intake after the first week. I drink muscle milk once daily, then I consume Oikos yogurt, refried beans, pure protein bar, sometimes cream of wheat, sometimes sugar free fudgsicle, tuna, sweet potato....

How do you reach your fluid and protein goal?

Pre-surgery, I was a water chugger, so sipping killed me the first week or so. You will find out very quickly if you take too big of a sip or drink - your stomach will let you know. I found I had to try water at different temperatures, but would make sure I was drinking at least one cup of water (8 ounces) per hour during the day. Sometimes warm, sometimes cold. Sometimes flavored. Sometimes plain. After about 3 weeks, I was able to drink normally again. To this day, I keep a water bottle at my desk - 24 ounces - I consume it completely twice during the course of the work day. That gets me to 48 of my 64 ounces without even trying! As for protein - when I was on liquids, I made sure I had 2-3 shakes a day - Premier protein shakes are 30g protein - so 2 of those met my goal. Now, it's protein first - I still have a shake in the morning - this morning's was 2 ounces strawberries, 2 ounces blueberries, cup of coconut milk and scoop of protein powder (under 200 calories and 25g. protein.) I shoot for 70-90 grams of protein a day. A 15 gram yogurt is up for the start of lunch in a bit - that will get me to 40 grams before I have any meat or cheese today! Write everything down and keep track. It helps.

    Any June Sleevers!?!

I'm on day 4 of liquid only and it really has not been hard. I'm so surprised! Happily Surprised!! I drink a Premier protein shake for breakfast, have a Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt as a snack, drink another shake for lunch, and to be bad I might add 1 cup of Sugar Free jello!! (10 cals)!! Snack is the Yogurt again and dinner is another shake. After that if I feel like I'm hungry which I haven't been, I still have jello and water around!! I kind of like doing it this way. If I got to eat I may want to eat more meals that way... I have alot of friends praying for me...I totally believe in the power of prayer!
  10. Catwoman7..this is such a valuable tips. I Thank you for this. Basically I am not at all sugar like person. I don't like sweet stuff...( I know its unusual most of the time I craving for a bit spicy and tangy food. that's it. but I can understand that heaving a yogurt in snacks is like you are increasing your protein intake. For me I can eat hard veggie easily. So I guess hummus and veggie is a great idea. Thank you

    Post op depression

The reason I began to introduce variety of foods around the fourth month was because after being cleared back to solids had a very hard time holding just about anything down. Even water made me gag, sick and nausea. it got to a point during the second month developed horrible heartburn that felt like a heart attack ending in ER. After that I decided just to stick to soups... yogurts.. shakes because I did not want to get sick again. Once I hit my fourth month slowly re-introduced solids to wean out the foods I could or could not tolerate. Has it improved.. Yes.. but still cannot eat meats.. eggs.. any type of health breads.. still cannot tolerate water. In regards to my regrets!.. Yes it's just food.. and the tool I was given is to improve my overall health and well being. Have I lost the weight.. Yes 70 pounds.. do I feel amazing.. Not exactly. I feel tired.. very low energy and am also losing my hair. My regrets are based on all those factors that I was not expecting this far in as well as just missing the norm of eating a healthy meal without experiencing that horrible pressure after 3 -4 bites. I now dread meal time because I don't know how I am going to feel . Quantity has nothing to do with it... it's quality of life. I know I am not alone in this because I have spoken to many post vsg outside this forum who feel the same. So for those who have had a positive experience god bless.. but for those like me who wish they can turn back the clock keep searching for an outlet and foods that can make your meal experiences tolerable..
  12. Hey everyone!! I’m 6 months post op this 23rd and have lost 107 lbs since surgery! I’m ecstatic for my progress so far and need to lose about 40 more to be at my goal weight (fingers crossed). But lately I’ve been seeing myself being able to eat more that usual. I’ve went from 2-3 ounces to eat 4-5 ounces of food. Most of the time it consists of a good diet such as chicken salads or eggs, sausage , yogurt fruit and etc and I do keep up with my fluids. I just want to know if it’s normal to be eating this amount at 6 months post op? Also I don’t eat any carbs if it isn’t a pretzel here and there. I just want to be consistent and I’m scared that I maybe eating too much and my pouch has stretched !!! Any advice is appreciated Here’s a before and after pic!!!

    Holy Dumping Syndrome, Batman!

I have seen some people being a bit of a Debbie Downer, but let's try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes messages don't come across the right way online. I try to focus on the positives, that's what this journey is about after all. On that note, if anyone has any questions or just the need to talk to anyone, feel free to message me privately. We are all in this together after all And yes, I 100% agree with how much the pureed food phase sucks. All I have in my menu right now is ricotta, applesauce and yogurt. I am tired!! Luckily I can switch to phase 2 on Thursday and switch tonsoft foods like baked fish, and eggs, and chicken breast... I cannot wait! But I confess, after yesterday's episode I am so scared to switch!
  14. Tomorrow is my last day of pre-op diet. I'm to the point that I don't even want to eat. I'm so tired of the same things. I can't wait to be able to add cheese, yogurt, milk, nuts etc. I know it will be a while, but it's something to look forward to. I lost 14lbs this week! Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. my snacks are usually something like a protein shake or a Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt. Occasionally I'll have some baby carrots with about 1/4 C hummus (raw vegetables can be hard on my stomach, even two years out, but because they can be irritating, it stops me from eating too much. Hey - whatever works!). At night I'll sometimes have a couple of sugar free popsicles. Like raw vegetables, the sugar alcohols in sugar free popsicles bother my stomach, so all I can handle is two of them. I also eat Light & Fit yogurt occasionally at night, too, especially if I'm craving ice cream. The creaminess/sweetness/dairy aspect of the yogurt hit the same spot as ice cream would. I also drink *a lot* of fluid (usually Crystal Light) - which helps sometimes, but I know sometimes you just have to have real food...

    Protine

You have some good suggestions of several products that meet the need (Pure protein and Costco's store brand version of Quest work well, too) though I wouldn't consider protein bars to be any more of a "real" food than the shakes. Try working more toward meats, cheese and yogurts are the classic real food protein sources that our body tends to like better overall.
  17. Hi. I am going in for my sleeve surgery on Wednesday, my emotions have gone everywhere from excitement, to fear, to wanting to cancel to knowing this is my last chance at a normal life. I am mostly afraid of complications, but lately my mind has been on the future. I am on my pre-op diet this week (strictly meat and veggies) I don't eat much of either, I am wondering how I'm going to do if that is all I can have. I think adding yogurt, cheese and other dairy products in will be a big help. Did anyone else eat very little meats n veggies before surgery? I am ready to make changes, and I'm hoping that with some practice, I can learn to eat the foods I need to. I have lost 10lbs so far on my pre-op, I have not cheated once! Tips for Meals

We had surgery around the same time. I relied on refried beans with a bit of shredded parm on top. That was a staple until I could tolerate more dense foods. Little by little, one food at a time. Also ate cottage cheese regularly. Still do. I find that in the morning I still can't stomach anything too solid, so usually have yogurt (plain Greek) or cottage cheese. Later on, you can add some peach or pear to those. Learning new proper portion sizes takes time. You are on the right track using smaller dishes and utensils. I have to measure everything because I have no sense of what 3-4 ounces of food looks like. I can usually eat about 3 ounces at a time. Like you, I was raised to believe that wasting food is a sin. I try very hard to make only what I can eat. It does get easier.
  20. Hi girls! So i read our responses and what a coincidence I actually started to puree a little tuna with ricotta to make it smooth and it tastes soo good.. i only do yogurt like once a day and i only do half a yogurt. Another things I started to mar was guacamole, i'm not going to have it everyday but it's so good. I only go avocado, cilantro, onions, lime and salt. All pureed of course. In one day I dropped a pound and half. I lose weight everyday so far now.

    Favorites for each phase

Preop: Premier Protein Shakes. I still drink them, but my tastes changed after surgery and I don't like how they taste as much anymore. Clear liquids: Isopure protein water, Prostat protein syrup, jello (hated jello preop) Full liquids: cream of mushroom soup blended. tomato soup (another food I never liked preop) Puree/soft foods: cottage cheese, isopure unflavored protein powder (mix this into anything that doesn't have that many grams of protein), oikos triple zero yogurt, mashed potatoes and mased sweet potatoes with protein powder added, fat free refried beans, still eat soup on the regular with protein powder mixed in. Post op taste changes: Can't tolerate extremely sweet foods. I used to have a major sweet tooth but gagged when I tried some sugar-free chocolate syrup post-op. I also get queasy from plain water and need flavor enhancers. Pre-op I drank 2L of plain room temp water. Now, it has to be cold and I started using Trulemon water flavorers (don't like mio).
  22. B: homemade Greek yogurt with fresh raspberries S: coffee with half & half, SF coconut mango protein shake L: 1 C cottage cheese, 6 strawberries S: protein bar D: 3 oz grilled sirloin with mushroom sauce, coleslaw mix with sesame-miso dressing

    Need Puree Ideas

Hello and welcome. I love the ricotta bake, cottage cheese, yogurt, egg salad, tuna salad, refried beans with cheese, I cooked up some homemade soups and blended them. Scrambled eggs with cheese is also pretty good. If you google recipes for the purée stage you will get many.

    Feeling defeated

Are you allowed yogurt? I was allowed yogurt during my 2 weeks on liquids post-op. Also well blended creamed soups really helped to fill me up. You can do this!!
