  2. @@sweeteyes504 i've always been amazed, felt bad for people that have to cook for their kids/hubby/parents etc or just be around the food it can be hard enough to watch what you eat but to have all "those" other foods/smells around that must be terrible!!! thats great you haven't had any foods you are cooking for family resisted temptation it wouldn't "kill" anyone else to try and eat some of the "normal" food you make you don't' have to tell them its "good"/healthy for them to eat i have seen on the board that spouses/ family etc will help/support sleever by eating what they cook surprise, surprise - in the meantime OP loses weight too!! stay strong!!! i know you can do it!!! good luck kathy

    Blue Shield Of Ca?

I actually didn't even go through insurance. I ended up going with self pay. Because I would have had to pay 20-30% anyway, it came out only a bit more and I didn't have to jump through all the hoops. I had the surgery in April and have lost 76lbs. Not adjusting incredibly well to the changes though. I can't seem to drink enough or stop drinking while eating and I'm still incredibly tired so I don't exercise much. I know if I did I probably would have lost more weight by now.

    Nc Medicaid

Did medicaid require you to have the 2 years of documentation from a doctor showing that you have addressed your weight issues with them? I called medicaid to verify it, but the lady I spoke with didn't know but did tell me I was covered for it if I met the qualifications. The surgeons office I want to use told me I had to have the 2 year documentation. I think I may have just hit a wall with this now.

    Nc Medicaid

Hi. I am on medicaid and finished with my prep requirements. II live in eastern NC and medicaid requires 4 months of monitored weight, psych evaluation. Nutrition appointments and recommendation letter from your PCP. They cover RNY and Lapband only. I'm using Coastal surgical out of wilmington with Dr Harris. They do all your requirements Medicaid expect. Good luck on your journey

    Is This Calculator Right?

60% is the minimum average that sleeved patients lose. They give you that goal to set you up for success. If you beat the average you are ahead of the curve. If you lose 90% or 100% of your excess weight, you're way ahead of the curve. But imagine if every surgeon set the goal at 100% excess weight loss. All the people who lose 80% would be considered failures. That's bad for your self esteem but also bad for business (from the doctors standpoint).

    Lightheaded?

I would have to assume that your doctor is less than what you need. No offense to you, but he sounds almost passive aggessive. What diet could be considered a fail to drop 11 lbs a month? 11 lbs a month is just fine. !Stop dieting and start focusing on learning your new habits! this period is not to diet, really - it is to address all of the things we had done to our bodies before, the head hunger, sabotage, issues, enablers, etc. You do not want to go back into ketosis unless you really have to. Generally it is agreed that some people can be in ketosis up to about 60 carbs a day, depending. Ketosis is hard on the kidneys and is not a long term solution to weight loss, so if you can still lose even a modest amount with out it, I would recommend to avoid it. Kidney problems is one of those things that if bad enough could definately reverse your efforts in a seeming wink of an eye. Good luck - perhaps go to a local support group and network with the intention of getting a knowledgeable PCP, if for nothing else just a second opinion.

    Walking the Walk

Hi Neanie, I'm so sorry your BP wants to act up right now!! Gah!! I didn't necessarily have an issue with it, but my BP was right around what yours is now when I had surgery. Sometimes when you are going through stressful times, (like surgery) our BP can go up. I'm surprised they haven't taken that into account. Regardless I'm sure they are just looking out for you. I really hope for your sake that you can get your BP controlled in time for them to give you the surgery. It's a catch 22 for you if not... you can't lose weight so it raises your blood pressure and you cant exercise properly due to the joint pain... and because you can't exercise you can't lose weight. It's awful! I can tell you this, my surgery saved my life. I used to be on 4 max doses of HBP medications for years. I got off 2 of them with my band and just recently I have been released from ALL!! Also, my joint pain has been non existent. I've been able to RUN on my treadmill... what a blessing!!
  11. I exercise at least 4 times a week. I still only take in about 600 to 700 calories a day, I am just not that hungry. I want to take advantage of that first 6 months of the weight loss. When I exercise, I do cardio and light weights, that is all. The stairstepper/ski machine gives me a tough workout and I gradually increase my time on it. I also use the treadmill on max incline, this I was told really helps with the stomach area. I think the calories are important but watching the carbs and eating the right foods are more important. Sorry for the roundabout answer to your question, My calories have not increased much from once I was able to eat solid foods, I am still between 600 and 700 calories a day, about 30-40 carbs a day and try to still get in at least 80 grams of protein a day.

    A Little Worried.....

ShannonK not sure, could be wrong but........when i used to diet and would loose a substantial amount of weight - i was told "your stomach does get smaller since you weigh less" - not positive but...... the walking your doing is great exercise, hope your knees feel better as they have less to hold up/carry you need to work harder at drinking more H20 - 40 oz??? it took me a long time, now i drink 64 oz plus - you can do it too congrats on your good work good luck in all your tomorrows
  13. I was sleeve Oct 17th! Down 50 pds today!!! Yay! It has been wild with people saying "hey, you've lost ALOT of weight!" I was called skinny yesterday, lol (I'm not, but ok). Although others are noticing, its been hard for me to really notice... Weird huh? I guess thats the body dysmorphia thing!?!? At any rate, I'm overall happy with my loss thus far. I've made a few bad food choices and I own that, but I would have my surgery again in a heartbeat! I haven't seen this number on the scale in 7 years!!! In 3 months, I'm half way to my goal.... Yeah, wouldn't have happened without my sleeve!
  14. So sorry - Posted this in the wrong thread. Should have been posted in beginners. Hello everyone, I am an American living in Norway and it will be here that I get my surgery. They told me that I will be doing a special diet before my surgery. It is to prepare my brain for the changes to come. The diet will be based on some Norwegian food...but my my question is this: Did you guys get a special diet to prepare for your surgery? If so, what was it? They told me I should try to lose some weight before. I am making a good effort and exercise nearly daily and eat small meals - often. I have not yet started this diet of 990 calories. Please, let me know. Thanks for reading and your input would be appreciated. Rob
  15. What are white carbs? I know she cannot eat white sugar in any form so I don't think that's caused her gain. She gets horrible "lower gastric response" very quickly. We were in a coffee shop one day and they put sugar in her coffee instead of sweetner. She knew within about 5 minutes. It's actually the type of thing that's making me really think this whole process through. All the talk about foaming and sliming with the band pretty much ended that consideration. It sounds like the way you experience hunger now is a healthy way. Enough to trigger the desire to eat, but not enough to be driven by it.
  16. I am so tired of being tired all the time. I am fairly sure it's due to my weight and it just stinks. Looking forward to not being a big slug that wants to sleep all day long. I hear a lot of post ops raving about the energy they have and am curious when that happens for most. Is it just when you hit a certain weight? It would be nice to have that in mind to keep chugging along!

    When Does Energy Level Increase

I had energy about 4 days out but I swear it had something to do with my blood transfusion. I am two weeks out and have more energy than I did before surgery for sure. I am sleeping better already and have to stop myself from doing stuff so I don't hurt myself. I keep forgetting about my weight lifting limit. My post op diet is more liberal than some I have seen. I think it has a lot to do with the nutrition you are able to get in and taking your Vitamins.

    Weight loss

Generally, younger people with 'heavier' weights often lose rapidly in the beginning. At 67 inches and 352 pounds on surgery day, you had a super-morbidly obese BMI of 55. You also look youngish. Due to your high BMI and youth, your rate of weight loss seems normal. On the other hand, I was considered a 'lightweight' in the world of weight loss surgery due to weighing 225 pounds on surgery day. I lost 15 pounds in my first month post-op, 12.5 pounds in month #2, and an average of 3 to 6 pounds monthly thereafter. I was a slow loser. Also, keep in mind that not all of your initial weight losses are fat tissue. Some water weight will be dumped with the fat that you are burning.

How often do you go shopping for clothes that fit?

I haven't been banded yet either. That will happen December 10th. Ten years ago I successfully lost a bunch of weight and was down to size 14. Knowing someday I would get back into those clothes, I put the clothes in boxes. Thats where I plan to do my shopping for a while. Now of course, I don't know if my clothes will be SO out of date 10 years later but... I know I am sure looking forward to finding out! I have friends who have had gastric bypass and they tell me they shopped the Goodwill on their way down the weightloss slide. Then they just donated the clothes back to the Goodwill when they were done. I will definitely look there but I don't know how successful I will be since I am six feet tall. These are all good plans but I have a different lifestyle than I did ten years ago. Then I worked as a Network Engineer, now I am a Mom and have a Photography business. So if I need to look snappy for some particular reason, I'll just have to go purchase something.

    Pre-Op Depression???

I did. I think, especially for people who have been large their whole life, that we have tried so long to love ourselves despite our weight and the way society treats "fat" people. We have struggled with showing people our worth despite our weight. Now, we have to accept that their is truely something wrong. Something emotional that attaches itself to the physical. I think that is a hard thing to do. Plus you are being forced to look at yourself as obese, morbidly obese, severely obese, super obese. Whatever the case I think that can be very depressing. We are also breaking off a dear friendship. We have celebrating, cried, intoxicated ourselves with food. At least for me, food has been one of my most loyal friends, and it's like it's moving across the country. Your relationship with food will never be the same. I think depression is normal, in fact I think every emotion you have pre surgery and post surgery is its on "normal". Just express everything to your doctor.
  21. Hi there, I had my pre-op pysch evaluation that was required by my insurance. I was approved and am grateful. However, when I walked out of the appointment yesterday ,I felt badly about myself. I had previously filled out pages and pages of questionnaires. The therapist gave me her take on the responses and told me a lot of info about my personality. Nothing which was positive. She had also quizzed me about the surgery and was forthcoming with stats about how marriages are often in jeopardy when one spouse loses weight. Lots of doom and gloom. I'm a realist and generally happy with my life besides my weight. I want the facts and understand I need to work hard to change my behavior and coping mechanisms, but really left there feeling down. I didn't think she did me or anyone else a favor by her approach. Is this the norm? Did others experience this with their evaluations? Rachel

    Weight gain during pregnacy

I got pregnant at 11 months postop, after a decade of infertility. No IVF, just figured we'd try on a whom and BAM! Pregnant on first cycle, lol. I am 18 weeks, lost 12lbs first trimester, then have regained 3lbs after MD threatened to put in an NG tube, grr...had to start eating simple carbs. Prior to getting pregnant, weight had been stable for 3 months. Nutrition hasn't been a problem, but holy crow...the all day long morning sickness has! Never had any nausea while pregnant with daughter 13 years ago.

    Band Out Yesterday!

Hello! I'm new here too. Like you I tried the lap band and it didn't work for me so I've started my quest for the sleeve. I'm not sure though I'm thinking maybe I should be going for the gastric since I know I will lose weight with that (my Mom had it about 20 years ago). Is the band removal so early before your sleeve surgery the norm? I'm glad everything went well. Do you have a eating plan that you'll use until surgery?
