Ahead of schedule / losing too much?

If what is typical? That you have lost 100 pounds? Congratulations!! Only you know if you think you look sickly. You need to be happy with the weight you desire. What I find is that if you haven't been at a smaller weight and people that know you they think you are too thin because they are not used to seeing you like that. Over time I think as the weight settles with us people don't think we are too thin; does that make sense?

Ahead of schedule / losing too much?

I was worried that I was on the high side of losing, but my surgeon said that I'm just ahead of the curve. People lose weight at different rates after surgery. Some lose faster than others. Rejoice in being down 100 lbs.! As far as looking sickly, well, that is just certain people's opinions. If folks compare your thinner face/body to your old face/body then someone could potentially perceive you as looking sickly now. Do you look sickly? Absolutely not! I think family members and co-workers are the worst culprits on this. They feel compelled to warn you not to get too thin and that you will start looking sickly if you don't stop losing. What they are really saying is that they are very uncomfortable with your success and they don't know how to process your new physical image.
  3. I'm 11 months out and 5 months in maintenance. At this point, I'm pretty much past all the questions about "How did you lose the weight?" I only told a few family members and had some issue with answering close friends in a less than truthful manner. This morning (while riding my bike for an hour), I started recollecting the odd group of people who outright asked me "Did you have weight loss surgery?" Of the 200+ people I talked to about my weight loss, the only ones who asked such a bold and personal question were not people who I would consider close friends: 1. A local golf store manager. 2. The girl who cuts my hair. 3. My Pastor. 4. The former Cable Guy. How about you? If you're incognito, has anyone strange asked you directly?
  4. Going to the seminar on the 20th. I want this so bad. I have been over weight since I was a teenager. I'm 5 3 and I weigh 220. I have lost weight in the past but gained it back and then some.
  5. My high weight right before I started my pre-surgery diet was 250 on the nose. The first pic is in December of last year, three months after surgery, which means I was down to about 200. I've lost a total of 110 pounds in the last year, which is crazy. Don't be fooled by the black tights- there's a pool of saggy and baggy skin under there. Still, I'm in awe of the difference. I spend a lot of time looking in the mirror- not out of vanity but because I really don't recognize the person I'm looking at. It's a trip. It's confusing and exciting and rewarding. I'm in my goal range and seem to have leveled out as far as weight loss, but my body keeps changing still. It's weird to have a whole new host of body image issues to deal with. I can still very much be the girl who is terrified of taking up too much space and being fat and uncomfortable and unhealthy, and seeing a small person in the mirror can be very jarring to the image I have of myself in my head. That is slowly adjusting as my body does, but I struggle with seeing myself as a different person. I am so glad I made this decision- I feel so much more confident and healthy, I'm more active and eat healthier food, my back doesn't hurt- it's great! At this point in my journey the mental hurdles are the biggest ones to overcome, and it's fascinating to see how my mind tries to assimilate the knowledge of this "new me."

Hello ... I think I am just looking for some encouragement as I have just begun the process of deciding on Lap-Band. I have my innitial all day appointment with a nutritionist and psychologist next Thursday. I was wondering at what point they decide if you are a candidate for the proceedure. I am having it done @ Lahey Hospital in Burlington, MA. Has anyone out there had experience with them? I am just on the cusp on qualifying ... I am hoping that they do not turn me down. I an 58 years old and am so ready to do this and watch me be able to enjoy so many things I have been passing by because of my embarassing weight. Any words of wisdom out there ???

I really could use some advice

I personally would do it. I wish I could go to every college in the U.S. and tell them our stories. You are so young and understand what people your age are dealing with. My daughter is 16 and has PCOS, she has gained 50 pounds in the past year. She takes Karate twice a week and works out at the YMCA 2 days a week. I feel so bad for her because I know what it feels like to want to wear the clothes that are in style. My daughter is beautiful. (I will post pics of her). Anyways I would pay for the VSG for her at young age in a heart beat. Its sad to watch her loose her confidence. Im not telling you that this is the best choice for you. Its just a reason I would do it. BTW who cares if people know you lost weight this way. Its not like you are on crack or killed someone. People will judge regardless.
  9. @@KristenLe I really wonder about people being curious and what makes them curious. I don't have co-workers so I have never had to deal with that aspect of WLS. When I moved where I live now I moved here before surgery, so these people knew me as fat only. I had surgery started walking, got a dog and walked even more. I walked all the time in my apt complex, rainy days, freezing cold. With weights on, multiple times a day. None of the people that live here that have seen me drop weight "rapidly" have asked me a lot of questions about it. They just say "Looking good" "The hard work is paying off" I have literally lost a whole entire person in weight since I moved here, and no one questions it. Even the people that know me, and don't know I had surgery have never questioned it. My eating habits are totally different and my activity level while high before is through the roof now. People that are my friends on fitbit etc, see that I walk 25,000 steps a lot of days. My weight loss doesn't seem magical to people, they attribute it to a lifestyle change.

    Never Gets Old

This is my first fall/winter after wls in August. My weight loss started early this year. So this time last year I was the heaviest I've ever been, and now I'm over 120 pounds less than my highest. I'm experiencing the super-happy annoyance of having no warm clothes that fit me for the first time ever. For me, it was basically my experience since puberty started at 10 years old that I could pretty much expect to need a new coat and new wardrobe in general every winter. This year, my wardrobe consists of lots of cheap leggings, and layers of too-big hoodies. Even though this kinda sucks and worries me for financial reasons, I just can't feel in any way upset about it.
  11. @@kayse At 286 lbs, I don't look good naked or in clothes - at least after surgery I have a chance of looking good in clothes! There's no point in worrying about sagging skin - concentrate on weight loss and being healthy! Good luck with your surgery and recovery!!!
  12. Yes, I am doing exactly that. From Thanksgiving to today I have eaten what I wanted but sensibly, keeping track of my calories about 1/3 of the days. I didn't gain, but I also didn't deprive myself of the foods I enjoy. I also overindulged a handful of times. I don't feel guilty and as of today I am following my program, wanting to lose another 15 pounds. Back to basics and plenty of protein! I haven't entered the maintenance phase either. I did this on purpose. I'm not sure if it was a good idea or not. We will see in the coming weeks.
  13. Has anyone taken a month long break from active weight loss? Was it hard restarting the weight loss phase? I had major surgery the first week of December. The week prior I had to stop going to the Y due to Covid concerns. I admit I lost focus when it came to diet while recovering. I've increased my calories, especially carbs, more than I should have. But I didn't gain! I finally got the ok to start exercising again and I'm ready to focus on diet. Prior to surgery I was close to my goal weight but hadn't officially entered the maintenance phase. I'm curious if I can expect my weight loss to resume as prior to surgery or can I expect it to be more challenging since I have been in a 4 week self induced stall? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

    3/29/09 New Weight Loss Trials

Searching through WLS information I've run across several procedures I'd never heard of (VSG, DS). I'm sure you've heard that they are already doing single incision LB procedures (in through the belly button). Recently, I've heard of some new trials and have run in to people online who are participating in them; like TOGA. The procedure is incisionless and is done by going down the throat with a tool that opens like a book (that has staples sticking out of the pages), vacuums stomach tissue into the crease of the book and then closes, this is repeated several times to create several 'folds' that make a pouch near the entrance to the stomach. See article and video HERE. Just this week on the news there were two stories on WL trials. The first is taking place at the hospital I'm going to in Pittsburgh, Allegheny General. The first woman in the trial previously had RNY surgery and it didn't work for her. The new procedure that she had is deep brain stimulation. They use a similar procedure already approved for controlling Parkinson's disease, turrets, seizure disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and Dystonia. The procedure is safer than the RNY surgery she already had. They insert electrode wires into the brain, which stimulates metabolism and decreases appetite. Small stimulators (similar to pacemakers) are placed under the skin and the doctor can continue to adjust it with a remote. She's now losing 2 pounds a week. You can watch the short news clip HERE. This week the Today Show had a piece on three new prescription weight loss drugs that are in the final phases of FDA approval. The FDA has tightened their requirements since Phen-fen was taken off the market, and these three drugs have been in prolonged human clinical trials. All three new drugs work on the brain to decrease appetite and increase metabolism, and all show good promise. They are combinations of drugs that are already on the market to treat other things; Wellbutrin (anti-depressant), Topomax (seizures), and part of the Phen-fen drug that is still on the market. If you want to view the Today Show piece click HERE. I'm certainly not waiting for these to come on the market, but I find these stories interesting. There's another good thing about the LB; it can be unfilled or removed if a miracle cure comes along. Keep dreaming!

    The Enablers

Hey DeLarla, Frustrating isn't it? The nurse I used to sit next to would lay Cookies and muffins and candy on my desk as soon as she would hear I was on a diet... man how I don't miss her. My hubby tends to do things like that too... I think they want to be the provider of our happiness... and maybe there is a small part of them that is insecure at the thought of us losing weight? Heck... even my sister would give me the remainder of her entire plate after she had the RNY. I stopped going out to lunch with her. The best of luck today to you! Oh... if the chocolate isn't gone already could you put a couple on my old partner's desk? Darcy

    New you, New look?

I haven't done anything...except love my body more! I've always loved me, regardless of the size I was. Cute clothes, hair, bras, panties, etc. are all part of who I've always been! Confidence speaks volumes of people, and it's a trait I've been blessed to have. Sooo...I guess the only answer for me is that I work out! Not that I *wouldn't* have done it before the weight loss...I just didn't!

    Psychologist questions???

I remember they asked how my weight affects my job, my lovelife <dating etc>, how I think people perceive me. Has my weight deterred me from doing certain things. I told her I can't get a date, I'm too fat, I can't get a promotion, that people look at me in funny ways..things like that..hoped it helps..good luck Oh, btw, this is my third time.the first two i stopped..i had started my pre-op diet but chickened out..I have a stress test on the 18th then i think im home free...I hope the best for you..stay strong!!
  21. So I had surgery on Monday 9/19 everything went well, I'm now day 5 out I'm feeling tons better gas pains come and go and mainly in my shoulders. My question is, since day 3 when I get up I have to hold my belly. One of my incisions next to my belly button feels like its pulling because of the weight of my belly. They gave me a belly binder to where and yea it does help for the most part but I have to wear it in order to not hold that part if my stomach ... Has anyone else had this problem and how long did it last ? TIA Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App
  22. I see a big difference already, especially at your sides. Before your arms were kind of resting on the sides of your boobs, and you are definitely losing weight right there! As a matter of fact, I see it all the way down your sides and in the way your shirt lays in front, so you must be losing in the front as well! You're doing great so far!
  23. Hi, everyone this is my first post about my surgery. I was to the point of scheduling for my surgery but decided to hold off. Now I'm waiting for my insurance to approve my surgery for the second time. I was doing good at one point and was trying to loose weight and eating slower. But now I'm have lost my motivation. I have been reading of people losing weight before surgery. This is a big concern for me. I'm eating now like no tomorrow. I hate feeling hopeless and lazy to exercise. Anyone going through the same issues. I have no motivation right now. I'm hoping to get sleeved at the end of September.

    Almost 75

I had my band "installed" in 2007 & lost 125 pounds. Like everyone I said "I'll never put it on again. In the meantime my husband of 48 years died..but I still held my own. Some weight came back but I stayed under 200 for several years. A year & a half ago my sister convinced me to go on match.com and I met a wonderful man to whom I been engaged for a year & a half- and then I was so happy that I started to eat again & gain weight! Just about six weeks ago I got enough nerve up to make an appt to see my surgeon - after 2 plus years. I thought he would be furious with me but I was wrong. I took the first steps of seeing the nutritionist and the psychologist and last Friday I got the first fill in over two years. 2 days of liquids then 2 days of soft and tomorrow regular food - but carefully measuring. My fiance is wonderfully encouraging and I have 9 lbs off already. I know it's only fluid but gone is gone and I'm on my way to 50 or 60 lbs - down from 230. I'm 75 years old - work full time - have a man who loves me for what I am - not what I look like and soon will have the body I want again. Wish me luck!
  25. My doctor and surgeon both recommended staying on my antidepressants at least during the first year after surgery due to the hormone fluctuation during rapid weight loss. At first I had thought of getting off them since I believed being overweight led to my depression. However, I'm super glad I stayed on them during these past 11 months. The hormones can get a little crazy through this journey! As I approach my one year mark, I'm thinking I will stay on them at least until I reach my goal weight and then decide whether to stay on them or not. Also at first I had to cut the Wellbutrin in fourths, then halves. This was only for 2-3 weeks and then I was fine to take them whole.
