    Half-Ton Mom!!?!!

Well put Tiffany. There are risks and benefits with every surgery, procedure, and every medication we put in our body. With our doctors help, we have to decide if the benefits outweigh the risks. But don't forget that caring an extra 50-100+ pounds is a risk factor for just about every major illness (cancer, heart disease, diabetes - just to name a few). For me, the huge benefit of having WLS and losing my excess weight FAR exceeded the risks of the procedure itself. Good luck with your journey. Take a deep breath, everything will be fine. Just a few more days and you will be on your way to a healthier you.

    Pre-Op fear

I understand your fears I am planning on the gastric sleeve next month myself. As a recovery nurse I see patients of all sizes go through anesthesia. There can be complications for anyone no matter your weight. You have to remember what risk you face being over weight and not having the surgery and see that your risk are so much higher not having the surgery. In surgery you are monitored by a CRNA or anesthesiologist 100% of the time. They stay right with you and watch the monitors and vitals adjusting meds as need be. Having sleep apnea you should bring your machine and you might take a little longer coming off oxygen but that's no big deal. I send people up to the floor on oxygen daily and they are off by the next day. Bottom line it's scary. I totally agree but the end result is worth it. Hang in there and best of luck to you!

    NEW ON HERE !

Write a list of all the great things you want to do after losing weight...ride a roller coaster, go kayaking, paddle boarding, wear high heels, a sexy dress, better sex life, play with your kids/grandkids, run a 5k, get off diabetes meds, etc. You can do this! Stay strong!

    I'm New Here...

The best way to find the requirements for your surgery is to go to the web site for your policy and search "bariatric" to see what comes up. There should be policy guidance which lists the requirements. Some require a history of trying to lose weight (doctor's records can be enough), others require a monitored weight loss plan - often your surgeon's office already knows the requirements because they do this. Do make a list of questions you want to ask your surgeon. Consider bringing a trusted relative or friend with you to the appointment. My first consult was 3 hours and had to be done after attending an informational seminar at the hospital. There was a lot of information to digest (no pun intended) at that first meeting, so having another set of ears around doesn't hurt. best of luck.

    Birth control and regain

I am 38...had surgery in April of 2015. Made goal within 8 months (over 150 pounds lost). I went on birth control (ortho-tricyclen) 3 months after surgery. My doctors and nurses assure me that BC does not cause weight gain. Literally ever since I have been on it, I ONLY lose weight during the week of my cycle. The day I take that first white pill I gain 2 pounds and it stays until the day before my cycle starts and then it's gone. Before I was losing 10 to 15 pounds that week. This past month I only lost 4 and have already gained that 2 back. What's even crazier is that I go crazy on carbs during my period usually. This past time I didn't because I had a stomach virus and ate NOTHING. I like the BC because I have PCOS and my cycles were crazy before I had surgery. Since you don't have to be careful about getting pregnant (due to BF) then I would probably go off of them or get a different kind.
  6. So, I've just been cleared to go back to Zumba. I'm 2 weeks post op. My Dr told me to push it as hard as I can because the first 3 months will be the majority loss, next 3 months the weight stops falling off, but still good weight loss. I should be near or at my goal by the end of the first 6 months. However, I'm tired after just going for a walk for 30 minutes. Any advice on getting that energy again? I'm meeting my protein and fluid goals everyday.
  7. Rena's got this

    Yes she did!

My PCP said yes! She would refer me for the surgery!!! I thought since I was right on the edge (40 BMI) that she would say just to diet and exercise. After all, she is a tall, thin woman who has never ever been overweight in her life. After making me feel pretty low about my pre-diabetes, low thyroid, sleep apnea, heartburn, joint pains and such due to my weight, I asked her how she felt about weight loss surgery. Her eyes flew open and she looked straight at me, paused for a second and said....."well, yes. That would take care of most, if not all of your problems. If you're up for it, I'll refer you." She said that the lap band procedure or the sleeve would work well for me, being that both were reversible if I had problems. I was somewhat surprised that she thought the sleeve was reversible, but she just wasn't that knowledgeable about the procedure itself. I filled her in, and I know that she will go back and research it. But I'm not letting her off the hook....she said Yes! Yay Yay Yay! She also had an in house dietitian who will sponsor me for the 6 month diet requirement. She says the insurance will take the dietitian since she works under the physicians, and the insurance hasn't had a problem with that in the past. I am over the top excited! Hopefully during the Christmas holidays (I get 2 weeks off from my school), I can have it done at that time and not have to worry about hurrying back to work afterwards! Next year this time, I could be a healthy, fit and slender woman who will be ready for the first time in years to hit the beach!
  8. Hey guys it's buxndux again. 5 weeks post op and down 20 lbs, most of which was lost in the first 15 days. Since going back to solid foods i have been surprised at what i can eat, pretty much anything! Did you gentelman notice a big differance after your first fill? And did the weight come of easier after that first fill?
  9. DavidB

    1st fill, hurry up!!

Hey Bux, like plain it took me 3 fills to really get the weight loss going. I only lost 30lbs in 7 months but last month with my 3rd fill I have hit my "sweet spot" . I've lost 7lbs already this month. Hang in there.

    Help with diet

My diet before the preop was to stick within my calorie range for height and weight. She wanted me to focus on portion sizes, protein and making healthy choices but nothing was off limits. I exercised so I could eat more. Bought a fit bit. Lol
  11. Yep - my doc consistently told me that the average weight loss is 60% EWL and that if I follow the plan, that's what I could expect. On another thread where people were discussing their goal weights - I said that this was mine and that I don't want to set myself up to feel like a failure. I'm pretty appreciative that my doc is conservative in his estimates. And some other WLS patients on these boards were kind of jerks about it. Saying that by setting of goal of average I was assuming I'd fail and still be obese and why was I even doing it. Even though I'm about 10 lbs from the 60% EWL at 4 months out, so likely to exceed that, I'm still thankful for my doc setting expectation. I'd rather under-promise and over-deliver. Because I know that if I did only achieve the average weight loss, and I'd expected/hoped for more, I would feel like a failure. And that would be very bad for my mental state. Plus, I had to judge whether or not to have surgery based on the most conservative outcomes - would I still be glad I went through it if I was still slightly obese? Yep - because I will still have lost a significant amount of weight that I couldn't have lost without this tool. And, overall, it will make me more healthy, even if I don't get to a "healthy" weight.
  12. I found this forum while looking up information on a place in Mexico. I have tried really hard for the last three years straight to trim down and get to a healthy weight and I keep failing. I do really well and then I gain the weight right back. I'm 29 and 6 7' and weigh 274. My ideal weight is 220. My BMI is 31.5. Yes, I know I'm tall but I'm still overweight and I can't get it under control. I also suffer from Rapid Bi-Polar disorder which is what brings me to post this question. Has anyone had the Gastric Sleeve Surgery that also suffered from Rapid-bi polar depression and if so, did you notice any improvement after your surgery? I'm wondering if my bi-polar depression will improve any if I can get my weight under control. I was at 310 pounds so I have improved but I can't drop below where I'm at right now. I walk 5 miles in the morning, 3 to 5 miles at night, an average of 45 miles a week. I watch what I eat, but my job ... sometimes I can burn a ton of calories and other times its slow. I have both the cash and credit to get the surgery either in the States or Mexico. I've talked to my Psych doctor and she tells me... your tall, your not over weight... but I have man boobs like no other and as she tells me this, she complains about her own weight and how she has tried so hard. So I don't know if its her job to tell me what I want to hear, or what. In short, I work hard and I can afford to pay for the surgery out of pocket as my insurance won't cover i. I'm just wondering if anyone has any input on the bi polar issue. I do take meds for it and have it under control. My family also has a history of diabetes, cancer, brain cancer, high blood pressure etc. I don't want to follow in their foot steps. I want to change things for the better.

    No Pre-op diet??/

I had that experience. They wanted us to loose some weight prior but we aren't on like liquids for two weeks prior or anything like that like I've heard before. Good luck on 6/11!!!
  14. Thanks for this, it was interesting. I'm scheduled for surgery on April 11th and I've noticed that my surgeon/nurse team has not discussed calculating realistic weight expectations post surgery. I have a few more appointments before I go under so I'm going to bring this up.
  15. I went to my last Nurse practitioner visit today and I gained 3lbs will this stop the insurance from giving me an approval for the surgery?

5 1/2 Months Out And Stalled!

My story is almost exactly the same! I was sleeved 8/15/11 and have lost 57 lbs since then but nothing at all since the beginning of January. I have been running, walking, lifting weights and other exercise 3-5 times a week, tracking my food - getting in 70-100 g protein a day, keeping my calories around 1000 and drinking tons of water/diet snapple. I wake up every day and hope that I have dropped a bit but have stalled out at 184 as my lowest and then up and down a lb or so from there. I am falling into a bit of a depression this week because I worry that I am done losing. My goal is 140 - I am 5'3" so actually 140 is the very top of the normal bmi range for me. Dr's goal is 125. Don't really want to call my surgeon's office since she told me that I might get to 190 and that would be considered a success. I also have PCOS - not sure if that plays into this at all. I wish I had a crystal ball to see what is ahead so I wouldn't stress so much about it. This week I even have been trying to do protein shakes instead of breakfast & lunch but still haven't seen a difference...

  19. Hi everyone. I am on day 8 of my pre op diet. I swear this gets harder everyday and I am really frustrated because the doctor told me I could lose like 20 lbs in two weeks. I am eating nothing but baby carrots and having 4 muscle milk 100s a day which I know is probably not enough calories (400-600) but why does the scale go up and down? Seeing the numbers go down was the only thing getting me through this horrible diet. Anyone else experience this?
  20. Stay off the scale @aries477. Weight can fluctuate from not just day to day, but at different times of the same day. This liquid diet is not about weight loss, it's about shrinking the liver. And just a heads up....when you are back on food again...even mushy food, some of that weight loss will likely turn into gains until you are on a steady calorie count. Good luck...all of us who were on liquid diets know how hard this part of the process was. We're here to support you.

    3 Month pre-op

Fairly easy, they attempt to ween out if you have an eating disorder, have suicidal tendencies, accept responsibility for your current state (weight/health), if you have a history of maintaining your doctor appts etc. I also had to do a 65 true/false questionnaire about what I listed above. They ask repetitive questions attempting to see if your answering truthfully. It's was fairly easy, just be honest and consistent with your responses. Be mindful of your eye contact and body language too. Good luck!

    Day 3 Diet

that's awesome! I'm a carbaholic, so my body is probably like wtheck? at the moment. lol!!! I can't tell a difference or anything, it's probably Water weight - but still nice to see the number on the scale go down
  23. Cervidae

    Liver disease stage 3

Most people have a liquid or mostly liquid pre-op diet for exactly the same reason, because a lot of overweight people have fatty liver issues. The diet will help a lot, and losing weight after surgery will help even more.
  24. I was 327 when I was banded. The reasons why I chose the band were: 1. It's reversible. 2. I have control. My band can be adjusted, and I won't have to just simply "deal" with just a smaller stomach. 3. Bypass patients will gain weight back. 4. I know a couple of people who had the bypass and they don't look too good. They look saggy. They lose weight too fast and they look saggy and sick. 5. I don't have nutritional deficiencies. 6. Lap Band patients don't have dumping syndrome (google it if you don't know what it is) 7. Surgery is minimally invasive. I have all of my organs and nothing had to be "rerouted." 8. If bypass patients want to make "adjustments" they have to have another surgery. I.e. doctors have to go in and restaple their stomach. 9. I'm sure the ladies that I know that had the bypass are not just losing fat - they are losing muscle. 10. Bypass has a higher risk of complications. 25. They just emailed and said they have an opening in 2 weeks in Juarez with Rodriguez. I have about 24hrs to make the final decision. SOOO Scared and nervous. Just started even thinking about this about 2 weeks ago. I feel like I haven't had much time to process everything!! Has anyone heard anything bad about Rodriquez or the Juarez hospital?? BMI is around 32% and I am scared I will look awful skinny?? Is this wierd?? I can not ever remember a day I was happy with my body or my weight. I say I only need to loose 40lbs but I just can not imagine being smaller than that because it has never been an option untill now :/ But tonight at the dinner table my 7 year old was fighting with his brother over food. That was such a wake up call for me. He said that he loved food. That was the saddest thing I have ever heard. I do not want my kids to love food or be obsessed with food. Somethng has to change somewhere. Why shouldn't it be with me??
