  1. Hi Mia83, I have UHC choice plus also. I had my surgery July 31st.....so happy! My only insurance requirement was to have a BMI of 40 or higher, unless you have other health conditions due to your weight' then they may accept a lower BMI. My surgeon only required blood work, EGD, and ultrasound of my heart. My process was so quick, about 6 weeks! Of course each surgeon is different and may require more. Good luck to you!
  2. I hope I do not have any complications with them. I called and verified 3x if I needed a 6 mos supervised diet and they stated no as long as I have 5 years of weight record . I have 3 from my primary doctor , 1 from my Ob gyn and 2 from a previous family physician . I hope they will accept them. I also got records from enrollment at the ymca and Shapes ( gym membership) My bmi is 40 .2 . Did you have to take a sleep apnea test?

The Last Person I Will Tell...

You sound 100% ready for this surgery. If you have changed your life that much and still can't drop weight, the restriction of a sleeve may be what you need. Madigan is a great hospital. I did many of my nursing clinicals there. Good luck at your first appt; I hope you get approved right away. Are you a military wife or just trying to have your surgery done at Madigan?
  4. I'm worried I'm at a standstill. I lost 6 pounds right away and now nothing. I'm just curious how everyone's preop diet went.
  5. I am new to the forum. I am a 32yr old female with a BMI of 38. I am at 5 of 6 in weigh ins for insurance. My last weigh in is January 15th. I am conserned about my insurance approval. My Dr. says he doesn't see any reason for denial. However I am worried because 2 of the 5 weigh ins I lost weight, however the last two I have gained. If I've gained, will my insurance deny me? I am so excited about the future and am praying for approval. Can anyone help or have advice? My insurance is Blue Cross/Blue Sheild.

    Insurance worries

I have the Blue Cross Blue Shield- Highmark and I don't think you have anything to worry about. I was on a supervised diet for 6 mths and all I was able to lose was 5 lbs and I gained it right back. On my last visit, I lost the 5 again. I know it is Water weight because I retain a lot of it. You will be fine. Just follow the criteria they require. I do believe is 6 mths of dietician visits (consecutively) and psych eval. BMI is 40 plus or 35 with other health conditions. As long as the dietician puts in her notes that you are trying hard and understand the changes to come, etc....you should be okay. My approval took 2 days.

    Insurance approval steps?

It was very different for me. My PCP referred me to the hospital in my area. They have a weight loss program. Either by diet group meetings or weight loss surgery. Then they check and recheck for health problems. They submit the paperwork to insurance company. You wait for denile or approval. Then go from there. Very different.

    Met Surgeon, feeling dissapointed

Oh Lizard, I was mad as hell too. I really was. It took two weeks from me before I talked myself back up. When I initially left the office, I was like you. As soon as he said that, I thought "I'm going to show you!" Now, when that day comes and I'm finally135, I'm sure he'll forget he ever said that and tell me 'Of course you could lose all your weight with the sleeve'. You know that's true, but either way, I'm losing all this weight and more. Pertaining to the vitamins, I am such a bad pill taker. I really am. But as soon as I was approved by insurance, they emailed me a slew of information, one of them being my needed daily vitamins. It said as soon as I read this, start the vitamins right away to build up a supply. So I have, which is good because it's a little tricky. There's a time frame around all these vitamins in what not to take with what. For instance, I'm on a synthroid pill where I can't take pretty much anything with, just to be safe. I take that at 5. My multivitamin and calcium can't be taken together. Those, too, need four hours apart, and both need four hours apart from my synthroid. It's been a little over two weeks and I feel like I'm now getting the hang of it. So, yes, I'm glad I started early because this is the last thing I'll want to deal with when I'm recovering. So, I take my synthroid at five am, I take my B Complex-50 with my multivitamin at ten o'clock, calcium #1 at two o'clock, and calcium #2 at dinner. And guess what? I'm actually taking them and not hating it. In fact, that B complex-50 is pretty amazing in helping me with boosting my energy and supporting my metabolism while I'm low carbing right now in preparation for my surgery. You'll love that vitamin!
  9. I am seriously considering the sleeve. I am 35 yo, 5' tall and weigh about 170 right now. My heaviest was 244 in 2003. It has taken me years to lose the weight and actually got done lower last year to 130 but that is with a VERY strict diet and exercise regimen. I am a single mom with three small children and my profession is very stresssful. I just can't take the massive weight gain/loss constantly. My mom had gastric segmentation 16 years ago and it has been a blessing for her. Our family is obese, no way around it. I have BCBS Federal and understand after calling that they do cover this procedure. I know with a low BMI (ha low, meaning I am obese, not considered morbidly obese) my chances of approval may not be good. I also have asthma, joint pain, horrible knees, and added stress because I can't seem to lose weight anymore. Also, I used to be 5'2", I have scoliosis and am afraid the weightdoes affect that, I have back pain when standing alot. I don't know where to start, how do I find a dr? Anyone have any advice or words of wisdom in my situation?

    The Bathroom Scale!

I gained weight after surgery, and I have with the other two surgeries I had years ago. Some people hold water after anesthesia.

    hospital visit

@@Hilary Epstein Cohen I was only in the hospital for one night, a total of about 27 hours. I was ready to leave! Everything went extremely well though, and I had no pain at all- but I also used every single possible push time on my PCA pump. I was flying so high, my husband took my iphone away from me so I would stop sending nonsensical text messages to people (including my boss- whoops!) I didn't lose much the fist month- maybe 7-8 lbs, but the weight started coming off very quickly after week 4 or 5.

    Hit a stonewall

The rate of cancellation isn't that high through my military program. They have a rule that if you cancx your surgery date twice....it will not happen through their facility period. My friend cancx back in October. She tried to reschedule and now she is on an indefinite waiting list. Needless to say, she completely regrets succumbing to nerves...especially as she sees my almost 70 lb weight loss. My experience involves my military base. I'm sure it is much more flexible with self pay.

How much did you lose pre-op?

It's been 6 months and I've lost over 30 lbs. I was only required to lose 18 and my surgery probably won't be until May. I hope I'm still losing as weight gain might be a deal breaker for them. I'm trying.
  14. Same here Jenny! I feel like I'm depleting my body and the only thing that is keeping me mentally on track if you will, is the weight that I'm losing. I was finally able to finish an entire chononi yogurt this evening which made me feel better since its 14g of protein.

    Calling all Veterans......

Life is pretty normal. I just follow the rules. I do what I did to lose. I have to watch what I eat, and I track it on my fitness pal. I don't think I had a drink on new years eve, but only because I didn't go anywhere. I have an occasional drink, and it doesn't make me drunk like they say. If I go to a party, I'll allow myself to eat what there is. I don't stress about it too much. I loosen up a little on the weekends, and decrease calories through the week to accommodate that. I can eat what I think most people would see as a small normal portion. When there is an abundance of different foods, I'll have a bite or two of them all. I've learned a taste is good enough. I can eat all types of food, and nothing makes me sick. I still drink a Protein shake every day for breakfast, and have a small salad with chicken for lunch, and then protein for dinner with vegetables. I have to work hard not graze, but sometimes I do. I try to make sure it's protein when I do. I tend to eat more calories after work than I do all day. Maybe not the best plan in theory, but it's working for me. I think that's the message - figure out how to succeed, and then do that! Basically, I suspect it is no different for me than it is for my thin friends - I watch what I eat to maintain my weight. Good luck to you.

It doesn't really matter, just set a weight you desire to be. Many people surpass that. Dream come true!

    Stopping Ketosis

I was in ketosis for about the first two-three months post-op. There was no way to get in all the protein I needed with eating a more balanced diet. It was not by choice. My diet is more balanced now that I can eat more, and I am out of ketosis. I agree completely with @Arabesque. Your body goes pretty haywire the first few months after surgery. Your hormones get out of whack. One of my liver enzymes was high at my first lab check 2-3 months out, but my surgeon was not worried about it, so I didn’t worry either (I am also a nurse). I also get the lightheaded wobbles frequently. It usually happens when I make quick moves or go from sitting to standing. I “run” into walls and have to catch myself. I am pretty sure it is orthostatic blood pressure changes. It is a good idea to discuss your concerns with your surgeon. They can let you know if what is going on with you is “normal” after weight loss surgery and help you fix anything “abnormal.” Good luck!
  19. My insurance says: All of the following conditions must be met to qualify: You're at least 18 years old or you must provide documentation of completion of bone growth. You were unsuccessful with non-surgical medical treatments for obesity. Your medical records must show your failed attempts.Diet programs, such as Weight Watchers®* and Jenny Craig*, are acceptable methods of dietary management, as long as there are monthly clinical visits with your doctor and medical documentation of your participation and your progress throughout the course of the dietary program. *These programs are not covered by TRICARE. Physician-supervised programs made-up of only weight-loss medication management, do not meet this requirement. You have proof of one of the following:A body-mass index greater than or equal to 40 kilograms per meter squared (kg/m2); or A body-mass index of 35-39.9 kg/m2 with one clinically significant comorbidity, including but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea, Pickwickian syndrome, hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity-related cardiomyopathy, or pulmonary hypertension. I am 5'7 and 219 which makes me about 34 BMI. I don't want to get declined. I have 4 comorbidities but not sure if that matters if I am no 35 BMI at my first appointment on May 12th. Any suggestions?
  20. My BMI was about 50 or 51, no problem at all. They had a weight limit of 450 but I was under that. My insurance was Aetna.

    Sleep Test Results...

with my sleep study i also was diagnosed with nacrolepsy but i also had severe sleep apnea. even though my husband says i don't snore anymore i still wear my cpap, it gives me a better night sleep. as for the nacrolepsy they started me on allderal(sp) i took it for several months until i started having anxiety attacks. since the anxiety only started after this new medicine was started i contributed to the allderal. but if they do prescribe a med. it is the kind of med that can help you lose weight. good luck

    Doubts: sleeve necessary?

Hi I believe its is both, I have to do a 6 month weight management as well, and I am now on Month four. And with exercise and eating properly I have begun to loose weight. I do believe that although this is a tool the tool is only as good as the user, if you do not take responsibility of your eating and what you are eating as well as maintain exercise that you will gain the weight back. Because I had no idea of just how many calories that I was consuming in a day and by using myfitnesspal it has allowed me to become aware of what I am eating as well as how much, and why. Good look on your journal.

    Doubts: sleeve necessary?

Very well put and a really good question. This is definitely something I have been struggling with as well. I was originally supposed to have my vsg October 5th but had to cancel at the last minute. But now I am in the process of figuring another date for my surgery and I have had this exact question rattling around my brain too. I don't know the answer - but here is what I know about myself. I have tried every possible weight loss idea out there. I had tremendous success with Nutrisystem - I lost sixty pounds and was working out and looking fit - but here I am now almost back to my highest weight again. At the end of the day, NOTHING has worked long term - and surgery is most definitely a last resort for me.
  25. I cannot believe the has come for my surgery. I had a failed lap band in 5/05 and removed 12/12. Wednesday is the big day for VSG. My only concerns are excess skin and social eating. I know that I can have the excess skin removed which would probably just be a tummy tuck. As far as a social eating I worry about going out on dates and probably having to share that I've had weight-loss surgery with the fact that I'll be eating so little. I know I need to do this since I have a long list of medical conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc... So I have the presurgical jitters I'm hoping that all will go well I know that everything is in the Lords hand I just hope and pray that nothing goes wrong and I feel good about my choice I'm just nervous
