  1. This week it'll be 5 years since my surgery. I was 265 before my RNY and my lowest weight was 185-190. I stepped on the scale yesterday and I'm 215. The doctor/nurses croon when I had my surgery were never helpful and never helped after surgery with what I needed to do. supplements, food, nothing. They told me I could eat tums for my Calcium. I have books, and the Internet, but for every thing I find "to" do, something else says not to do that or take that. I badly need help. With everything. Is there a way to find someone to be like a sponsor or something? That I can talk to one on one to help me figure out what I need to do/take/eat/avoid and help answer questions if I have any? I'm going to look for support groups, but in the mean time... I don't want to wait to get back on track. Are there any fb groups or anything? Anyone who can point me in the right direction? I don't take any supplements, Vitamins, or anything. Any time I'd get what I thought I needed, I would be told it's the wrong thing. Always got the wrong snack /meal... Eventually, I got tired of wasting my money. Now I'm paying for it. Please tell me not all is lost and I had the surgery for nothing... That I can turn things around... That it's not too late...

    Surgery Postponed...

Hey All - Well, some of you know that I've been sick since I started the pre-op diet (think that's probably coincidental). Anyway, ended up with bronchitis and a double ear infection this week. Called my surgeon today and they said I need to finish my antibiotics before they can do surgery, so surgery moved from Monday August 3rd to Friday August 7th. Funny thing is that my surgeon is doing a workshop for other doctors that day, so my surgery will be recorded and shown via satellite to other bariatric surgeons. I was fine with that for two reasons 1) they don't show my face and 2) I figure he's gotta be on his "a" game right?? So, bummed that I have to live on liquids for yet another week, but feel better that at least I'll be healthy for surgery. Jen
  3. Immediately post-op it wasn't too bad, but my second weak post-op was terrible energy-wise. From 3rd week on, it's been getting progressively better - almost 6 weeks out and feeling pretty normal now.
  4. Not seen this one before, so not sure if anybody else has experienced this. I'm just over 1 week out from surgery. If I stick to the Optifast and custards I'm OK, but as soon as I make a liquid meal, like a thin Soup, my body heats up and goes into overdrive. I get really hot and clammy. Has anybody else had this? If so, does it settle down? Is this what it feels like to have a metabolism working properly??

    May 5th Surgery Date

In my diet packet, it says to start a full liquid diet on day 3. So, according to my instructions, I'm allowed Protein shakes, yogurt, creamy Soups, that kinda thing. It says always do a Protein Drink first, at least 2 a day. I've only had one so far and it took me 5 hours to finish it. Now just the thought of drinking one makes me feel kinda sick. The gas-x strips aren't really helping either. That taste is just totally grossing me out.. I haven't even really been into the popsicles or jell-o either, so pretty much all I've had is Water. I think it will be ok, just because I've seen a variety of different pre-op diets posted.. some don't start full liquid stuff till later. I know protein is really important though. Honestly, I think I'm kinda scared of losing my hair.. which is why I feel so compelled to go ahead and push myself to do it. Realistically, I know it will probably take longer than 2 weeks for that to actually become an issue. Walking hasn't really been too bad for me. Course, I say that, but I haven't really started doing anything more than just leisurely walks yet. So far I've just been doing a couple laps around my apartment parking lot. I've also been making excuses to go to Target or the mall a million times to wander around. I have a fitbit which tracks how much I've walked and I've tried so far to get at least 3000 steps in a day. I think once my incision pain gets a little better and I feel more comfortable getting sweaty, I'll start increasing my pace. It's kinda weird, but for me.. the fact that I've spent so little time eating has made me feel pretty restless. The good part about it is, it makes me want to get out and be more active instead of just sitting around and stuffing my face! How's your walking going? Are you having any issues with pain still?
  6. K. I've been highly depressed lately and have been slacking. I was sleeved on jan 14th. I haven't lost in 3 weeks. I was doing so well then got depressed and just been "tasting" way too much. I also work at Starbucks and got my coffee addiction back. Has anyone gone/going through this? If so what have/are you doing to get back on track? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using VST
  7. I had my first fill at the end of March. I went back to my surgeon 3 1/2 weeks later for a f/u visit with every intention of getting another fill. I had 1.1 cc's put in at first. I haven't felt much restriction, just sometimes and I PB'd once. I told the doctor that I PB'd once and that I felt the "golf ball" about 2x per week. He told me to hold off for another month because he didn't want me to be too filled to get anything down. He has been happy with my weight loss. So.... I took his advice and will wait until next month. I have just heard nightmare stories about bandsters being overfilled. Just watch what you eat and try to stick to low carbs and high protein. Good luck!!
  8. I haven't been to they gym in a week because of the pain and when I exercise it stops me and I end up leaving. Oh well I guess it just has to pass hopefully on its own.
  9. I had my seminar tonight and I love the surgeon and his entire practice! He thoroughly explained everything and was very real and truthful. He went over all 3 procedures but basically said he will probably not be doing anymore lap band surgeries come next year. He actually sees that entire procedure fading out soon. I asked about a pre op diet and he said he really doesn't require one or require his patients to lose a certain amount of weight prior to surgery. Unless however they are super obese and surgery soul be too risky at their current weight. I turned in my paperwork and they said I should receive a call in a week or so after they contact my insurance. I am looking forward to starting this next chapter in my life!

    In Desperate Need Of Help

I love your attitude about the diet. It is easy to focus negatively on the diet and some do, but two weeks isn't even a blip on the timeline of life. You'll do well.
  11. I just had my surgery July 26th. I lost 10 lbs on the pre-op liquid diet and so far I've only lost 3 lbs since the surgery. I know it hasn't even been a week yet but I'm a little disappointed. I've been walking several times a day and am only able to eat about two ounces at a time. Am I just being too impatient?
  12. Feeling GR88888888888888888888T , Lost 2kilos in the 2 weeks on mushies.... AND I CAN EAT NORMAL FOODS NOW........Yeah !!! Banded by Friday

Ok so the date is set and I am getting anxious..(Fri the 18th)I am binge eating and lol the whole time, knowing in my mind I am not doing myself any good. But can't seem to resist.I have heard from so many that they are on liquids before surgery and I have not been given any instructions to do so. Preop is Wed. I am worried about this though. Please give me thoughts and suggestions to get through the week. Although I am excited I can definately say the nerves are setting in...

    Anyone from PA?

:clap2: I'm from Pittsburgh! I'm seeing Dr. Colella at AGH. Went to my seminar last week and have my first surgeon appt. on March 20! Wow, how far away is that!
  15. I have 6 kids with Down syndrome, three of them have Autism. Only two can really understand whats up. However, I had breast cancer 2 years ago so they're all kind of "used" to me being down for a couple of days. All I told mine was "Mom is going to have surgery to fix her tummy." That's it. I didn't say anything about "hurt" or "pain", because that would freak my kids out. I have one "crasher" who loves to crash into me. I wore my corset thing outside of my clothes the first couple of days home. That helped her remember she could not crash into me. I did show my two with the most understanding that I have small incisions. (one of them, the girl, saw all my breast reconstruction wounds, plus has had major liver surgery so this was nothing to her. Look up liver transplant incisions and that is what hers looked like.) I just say things very matter of factly, don't describe anything that doesn't need to be described.

    Low cal lunch Ideas

Today marks my 3rd week out. I am a teacher so I have the summer off, and still getting use to eating. I am thinking about the year ahead and wanting some quick, low cal. ideas for lunch. Any suggestions! Are lean cuisine, weight watcher, and healthy choice meals are okay? or is that to much?

My Plan and looking for input.

Don't worry about the post-op diet at all. I know you can't truly understand this, but believe us when we tell you, you're simply not hungry for a while after surgery. The problem will be getting in enough fluids, not how to stay on fluids. As for the pre-op diet, it's just 2 weeks of your life. Bribe yourself through it if you have to. Plan out what you get (like a present) every day you stay on the horrible pre-op diet. Write yourself notes about how the ONLY thing you're in control of, in terms of the safety of your surgery, is the pre-op diet. It's the only thing you can control, so you can do it. It's just 14 days. You WILL eat again. There's no reason to feel you have to during those 14 days. As for your husband, you will still be his eating buddy. Just, rather than you both ordering an appetizer and an entree and sharing, he'll order both, you'll order an appetizer, and you'll have a bite or two of all 3 and he'll have the rest. You'll still enjoy the food and the variety just as much, if not more. Since, for your husband, it's not about quantity eating, or commiserating in being heavy, I don't see this as a problem. It's when we "betray" our eating buddies -- the ones we overeat with who are also heavy -- by getting thinner and wanting to eat healthier, that the social issues arise in full force. I think you'll do great and your husband will be your biggest supporter. Good luck!
  18. Greetings, I attended the seminar with Dr. Woodman on 3/4/2008: I completed my consultation with the Nutritionist, had the Psych evaluation, copies of my past 5 year medical history, and a support letter from my primary care physician completed prior to my 1st visit in Dr. Woodman's office on 3/25/2008. The nurse told me that they would schedule my 2nd visit once they received a letter from my insurance approving the surgery. I received a letter from my insurance company last week advising that they have approved the surgery with a cc to Dr. Woodman. I assume that Dr. Woodman's office received the letter about the same time I received mine, and was wondering approximately how long I should wait before I call their office to see if they received the letter? Thanks, Terry

are you happy you did it?

Heidi, that's a tough question! To be honest, it depends on the day you ask. Today, the answer would be "no" I am not glad that I did it. I am in a rotten mood, I have been making horrible food choices and I feel like I have totally let myself down. But, if you would have asked me the same question 2 weeks ago, the answer would have been 'ABSOLUTELY". Like anything, it has it's ups and downs. All depends on how you work it and what you want to get out of it. All in all, I am glad that I had it done, but there are much more emotional issues with food then I thought of. Best of luck with your surgery. you are making the right decision for you and that is what counts. Keep us posted on how you are doing. God Bless.
  25. Well, I had my first doctor's appointment yesterday! I am excited, anxious and nervous about the future, but I know it's the right choice. Apparently my insurance, UMP (Regence), is pretty good about approvals, but I have to do the 6 months pre-surgical plan first. The clock started yesterday. I am going to Northwest Weight Loss Surgery in Everett, WA, and my doctor is Dr. Michaelson. He was great in our consult, and explained everything very thoroughly. I had already done a ton of research and decided that the sleeve was for me, but he concurred and stated that it would be best for me, considering my age, lack of diabetes, and no tobacco use. I will have to lose 5% if my weight over the first six months (11 lbs), and my BMI is 43.4 right now, but they will be looking over the last 2 years of my medical charts. The insurance coordinator stated that if my BMI was below 40, they may be looking for co-morbidity and will send me for a sleep study. I do think over the last two years my BMI did drop below 40, so not sure how they will deal with that. Pre-Op is a 10 day/10 lbs lost diet, I will find out more at my next appointment with the RD in 3 weeks. I cannot gain weight now over the next 6 months, but obviously can lose prior to surgery. My out of pocket won't be more than $2500 as that is the max, and I'm saving my FSA amount to pay that out of pocket. I don't know how those that pay the full amount do it! I also have to schedule a psych appointment as part of the 6 month criteria, and will have the endoscopy closer to the end of the pre-surgical period. My final appointment will be 7/31 and they will submit for insurance approval on 8/1. Excited but a little impatient too!
