My BMI of 53 and my hypothyroidism were my only two health conditions. I worked with the bariatric team, attended 6 months of classes and documented my previous weightloss efforts. The doctor's office then built the case for me needing surgery and presented it to the insurance company and I was approved. I encourage you to work closely with the health care team as they are your greatest advocates with the insurance company. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

Sorry I can't think of anything. Perhaps if her college is not too far away, you might invite her to attend a Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meeting. Drag her along. It might give her a window into your world and someday in the future she might climb through the same window on her own.

BP, Cholesterol, Blood sugars etc not just weight loss and size
Jugido64 replied to Jugido64's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thank you for the input. It is usually the same on most bariatric sites. Very few talking about the "bare bones" of this deal and more about the superficial aspects. I've been a part of several support groups regarding WLS and again it's frustrating due the lack of autonomy and how we got here. I suppose I'm seeing my own reflection and in many ways it's mucking up my view. I wish everyone here the best and happier, healthier lives as a result of having banding done. -
Are You Still Seeing Your NUT?
Introversion replied to IveGotThePower's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep. During my one-month post-op appointment, the nutritionist suggested I reintroduce crackers into my diet. I told her that wouldn't be a good idea because crackers are a trigger food for me. Prior to bariatric surgery, I would literally graze my way to the bottom of a box of flavored Triscuits, Cheez-Its, or Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers. Since I'm not the type of person who can stop at 5 crackers, it's best that I not eat them on a regular basis. Besides, crackers don't have enough protein to be worthy of my time. -
Hi Tellie - Your theory may not be that far off. My third fill was similar to your experience - a few days before my third fill I starting to have some pains in my back where I imagined the band to be, a pinching like feeling. I couldn't really imagine how much worse it would be going even tighter, but decided not to cancel the fill. I can't tell you the relief I felt as soon as all the saline was drained out - it was like suddenly being able to breathe again, not realizing I hadn't been breathing before. Third fill was given, and I felt much more comfortable than at the end of my second fill, but definitely tighter. My fills don't usually kick in for about 4 weeks. I have only heard a few others comment that they seem to be on that same delayed schedule. As far as why they take time to kick in at all, perhaps the sudden release of pressure relaxes the stomach, and it takes a few days for it to react again to the renewed pressure. (I love making up my own theories - lol) As far as whether you need a tweak now, or not... You really have to use your best judgment. If you're not losing and not having any problems with this fill, you may want to get readjusted. Just promise yourself that if you end up too tight you'll take the time and expense to have some fill removed. Good luck!

Looking for ANY Molina Band Revisions to Sleeve!!
kelbug1990 replied to TheSkinnyCow73's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am hoping since the original post was 2011 your revision has been performed but it took me many years to find a doctor to help me out. I had the Molina band in 2003 by Dr. Molina. In 2006 I began having complications but at the time I wasn't aware it was band related. I would be woke up out of a dead sleep coughing and chocking on stomach acids. I just thought I had reflux. Now i know it was that I was forming an obstruction due to scar tissue from the band. I had severe chronic reflux and vomitting from the food not passing thru. I tried for several years to find a doctor to help me. Due to the high risk of this complication of the Molina band I attempted to see many doctors but they did not do Molina band revisions. I went to several others but my insurance did not have bariatric coverage but in reality I wasn't obese and the surgery was not for weight lose it was for a complication. I was almost completely obstructed when I finally remembered seeing Dr. Nowzardan from Houston on TV and I worked for a plastic surgeon previously that worked with Dr. Nowzaradan. I gave his office a call on a Friday and they got me in the next day on a Saturday and by Monday afternoon my surgery was approved and scheduled. His insurance girl was great. They knew the correct way to code it since it was not a bariatic surgery. I had a hiatal hernia repair, gastrectomy and gastrojejunostomy. So basically I had a hiatal hernia from years of throwing up so that was repaired. The gastrectomy was to cut the section out of my stomach that the band was adhered to and the gastrojejunotsomy was the gastric bypass. According to Dr. Nowzardan I was not a candidate for the sleeve gastrectomy and the only real option I had was gastric bypass surgery. Without him I do not know where I would be. Malnutrition for sure. I am going on 5 years since my bypass and it has been great. My weight stays within 138 to 145 over the past few years. Initially I got down to about 130 but then went up a few pounds after maybe the first two years. It's been the best thing for me. Other than dumping every so often I have no complaints. I have to take that back. I tend to be a noncompliant patient in regards to taking Vitamins so there are times I am Iron deficiant anemic but as long as I am taking my vitamins and supplements my levels are perfect. I hope this helps anyone that is suffering with issues from the Molina band.Angie -
What Vitamins Are You Taking?

So so much comes from b vitamins! I suggest a b complex I think Bariatric advantage has one, and lots of companies have a sublingual b12 -
I had my surgical consultation today for revision, but on the off chance that it is not deemed medically necessary for revision, I do qualify for bariatric surgery in general, repeating all of the requirements as if it were a new procedure. My question is regarding Cigna coverage. Most plans require a monitored 3, 6 or 12 month diet/nutrition/weight loss management through PCP or somewhere similar. Cigna's policy says NOTHING about this, only that "a statement from a physician other than the surgeon, that the individual has failed previous attempts to achieve and maintain weight loss by medical management" - it gives no other requirements or indicators. I called Cigna today to inquire and they couldn't tell me anything more about this. So, for those of you that have been approved in the past few months (Cigna's policy requirements look to be effective 10/9/18 through 7/15/19), what did you provide for this? I have to have a letter from my primary anyway that recommends bariatric surgery. Would this be the same letter or separate? And what did you submit/have your PCP write to say that you had failed previous attempts? Thanks in advance for your help!

I suck at this protein thing!
Haus replied to ambermj's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 2 weeks post op, and I was using Premier Protein also and couldn't stand them. I've tried a few different ones...Premier Protein, Isopure, Bariatric Advantage. I just started using unjury and it's amazing. It's not chalky or gritty. No bad aftertaste either. The chocolate splendor with skim milk tastes just like chocolate milk and it gives you 30 grams of protein in 8 ounces. Good price on it also. I believe it's 22.95 for a container and you get 17 servings per container. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Food is fuel, simple as that, and sometimes it can taste amazing! Navigation in the beginning is tough. A few bites of something you used to eat (that may not be so good for you, I personally don't go there yet) tastes JUST as good as the six cups you previously ate, or half the -insert food here- you used to eat. sometimes I will admit that once in awhile i get sad that I can't eat that whole bowl of fabulous pasta at my favorite restaurant, but seriously? I did this to change my life for the better, clean, healthy eating, nothing processed, feeding my family healthy meals, not mad and cheese and chicken nuggets anymore. to each their own, and it's HARD, damn hard when you start out! Everyday is a learning experience, everyday is a chance for a new you. Therapy is a good thing, I go not just about food, because unlike many bariatric patients i didn't have underlying food issues except carbs and depression. But talking about the surgery is important. Good luck. Please take care of not only yourself but your new stomach.

What Were Your Favorite Post Op Foods?
chrystine replied to KristinaRnY's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am really sorry that you're being treated like this. I think this is a problem overall with nutritionists and dieticians - the contempt they have for the overweight. The last time I saw one the food plan she put me on was so insanely restrictive and she was so condescending it was more harmful than helpful. I hope my nutritionist that I see at the end of Jan for the procedure is better. Doesn't you NUT have a plan for you or have you not got that far? You will find everyone on here has a different eatingI plan and time frame. First 2 weeks post I could only have Protein shakes, yogurt and cream of chicken soup, along with clear liquids...sf swiss miss with a scoop of unflavored protein was my daily go to drink After 2 weeks I could only add egg, cottage cheese and ricotta....I made a baked ricotta every day..yum! At week 4 I could have moist meats, I dont have to puree any of my food just has to be really moist...I use my crock pot for chicken and turkey, can have any flaky fish and soy products, no beef I stay on this stage for 4 weeks Because I eat so little I make one thing and eat it for couple days. I just had all my bloodwork done for surgery today and a urine analysis, I've met with the nutritionist several times and she honestly just looks at me like I'm disgusting, she hardly says a word and didn't even want to see my food journal they required me to keep for the past 6 or so months. Unfortunately I have kaiser insurance and she's the only one in the bariatric department in my area. I've asked her about post op foods and she said i will get that information in my pre surgery conference where they will have me try shakes -

Moving on From Dr. Kim's Office in Dallas
Thucydides replied to NTXGal's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I'm sorry to hear about the problems that you ran into. I also had similar issues with a different surgeon's office before I switched surgeons. While I don't have any experience with Dr. Barker, I did have a very good experience with Dr. Nick Nicholson who is also rated as a "Best" bariatric surgeon by D-Magazine. I've found his staff to be very responsive and accommodating to my requests. Best of luck with finding a surgeon that works for you and for your surgery! -
Hey! I lived in Indianapolis for 8 years :-) I am there every weekend... Bariatric Weight Loss Center of Excellence St.Vincent Carmel Hospital 13430 North Meridian, Suite 168 Carmel, IN 46032 Phone numbers: (317) 582-7088 Toll-free 1-877-831-1582 This might be a good place to start. If they won't do fills for patients that had the surgery else-where... then they certainly would know who to send you to. :-) Good luck to ya up in my Indy home!

Wow, I'm sorry you had so many problems with fills! Where are you in Southern California? I am in the Los Angeles area and am seeing Dr. Milton Owens at Coastal Center for Obesity. He's been doing bariatric surgery since 1987, Lap Band since 2001. He seems very open to giving the right care, and my PCP highly recommends him. Just a thought...

Please Read page 6 of the Cigna Bariatric Surgery cover document. On that page it explains in detail why the office is making us go through a six month nutritional evaluation by a physician or registered dietitian. I know it is frustrating but we must follow the rules, so Cigna can pay for our surgeries.

This! This is what I found when I was trying to 'check off' that I met all the requirements and yet at my appt with my bariatric surgeon yesterday they said CIGNA REQUIRED SIX MONTHS OF BACK TO BACK VISITS WITH A NUTRITIONIST and they MUST be sequential back to back visits or you start over!!!???? I have a year of supervised medical weight loss with my primary dr, a BMI of over 50, pysch eval clearance letter, even letters from other dr's like ortho's who said my knees must be replaced but I need to be at a BMI of 40....and yet I was told that Cigna didn't care about the supervised weight loss. They want me to meet with a nutritionist for SIX MONTHS to do WHAT? I AGREE I need to see a nutritionist although nutrition was always the topic of discussion with primary dr.....but for SIX MONTHS? That's a more rigid requirement than the weight loss and I worked on the weight loss for a year as I wanted to be very sure of things. Why do we get so many different answers..I have Cigna 90/10 plan (I pay extra for higher coverage as I usually am in hospital for 2 weeks every other year...why keep paying a 50K to 100K hospitalization bill for me when we can treat SOME of the underlying reasons and keep me OUT of the hospital?). I'm afraid to even call them. My bariatric surgeon is experienced...not sure about his staff as I just met them and he is building out a new office so they are co-sharing office space with an OB-GYN (like that wasn't uncomfortable)...should I call CIGNA myself or let dr handle? I really am now feeling leery of his staff

Has the sleeve not worked for you?
UK Cathy replied to tannak's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Ontour, there is a veterans forum and perhaps you should post there for some help as the sleevers there are like yourself many months out and the euphoria of the initial loss has passed and they have faced all different issues. Everyone is super helpful too, not that people on other forums aren't , it is just that they seemed to have faced situations that the newly sleeved haven't . Also, is there no one at your doctors office who can take over your care? Or another bariatric surgeon you can approach? -

It would probably also be helpful if you say whether you think your expectations were incorrectly set by your bariatric team or if you just had higher hopes or more complications than you expected. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using VST -
How long from first appointment to surgery?
WL WARRIOR replied to bklaurid1970's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My first bariatrician visit was January 28, 2014 and my actual surgery wasn't until October 6, 2014. It took so long due to the requirements and hoops I had to jump through. Just the dental requirements took up the summer months. It really depends on your individual requirements, insurance, and bariatric program. Some people have sleep studies, stress tests, and weight loss requirements to complete before being considered before surgery and others do not. -
Are You Still Seeing Your NUT?
IveGotThePower replied to IveGotThePower's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I definitely get your point. My Nut specializes in bariatric patients and has told me that she had to adjust what she had been taught to the bariatric patients needs since they (we) are different. That is a good point. Not all Nuts are educated about our particular needs. -
So my surgery is scheduled for October 1st, and my surgeon put me on a 2-week liquid diet starting this past Friday. I'm suppose to drink 3-5 Bariatric Advantage shakes a day and drink 72-96 ounces of Water. I made it through Friday fine but by Friday night I was having uncontrollable diarrhea to the point where I barely slept and had 2 accidents in the middle of the night. Saturday and Sunday I was travelling and in long meeting both days, so I did not follow the liquid diet... but did eat healthy (lean Protein, salads, veggies, etc.) I'm back on the liquid diet today and have only managed to drink one of my shakes because they completely disgust me. The smell of the powder by itself makes me want to throw up. I'm at the point where I'd rather not eat anything than drink another shake. Two questions: 1. Anyone know of anything I can do to get rid of the diarrhea, or will it simply go away after a few days? I'm choke down the shakes if I have to, but the thought of spending two weeks in the bathroom makes it harder to drink. 2. Is 96 ounces of water a hard upper limit? Is there any reason to limit the amount of water I drink right now?
