  1. I was banded by Dr. Kurt Roberts with Yale Bariatric group in New Haven, CT. Was banded on December 18th, 2008. Have had one fill of 1 1/2 cc's. I really don't have any restriction. I eat about a cup to a cup and a half of food and would love to eat less. I have lost 18lbs, but that was in the first two weeks. NOTHING since. Can anyone tell me what the 'norm' is? I feel like such a loser that I can't even lose a single pound!! I'm beginning to regret this surgery and thinking of gastric bypass. Please help! I will take any type of feedback you are willing to give. Thanks bunches! Brandy

Has anyone had their esophagus dialated?

Hi there...I had surgery last week for a hiatal hernia & replacement of my lapband and am doing great. I had a 4cc lapband placed in me in July 2008. I had a lot of restriction from the beginning and was only able to to get one fill. After a fill, I had constant reflux & food was hard to keep down. I had to get an unfill a few weeks afterward and was empty until 3 weeks ago. I decided to get a fill after having nothing for 4 months and I was only able to put .3 cc's in my band. There was obvious irriation and we couldn't figure out why. After one week of the fill, I started having reflux again. After having it unfilled last Saturday, the doctor said I still showed complete restriction. She said I should stay on liquids only, no sodium. I woke up on Sunday dehydrated and still having a struggle keeping water down. I went to the emergency room and they immediately started rehydrating me, did an upper gi, endoscopy, and finally a ct scan which showed a severe hiatal hernia. What I failed to tell you is that I had my lapband surgery in Mexico. I didn't know anything about different sizes of lapbands. The bariatric surgeon here in the U.S. that attended me this past week said that they never put a 4 cc band in anyone. IT's way too small and they're certain that my hiatal hernia was caused by my band being too small for my anatomy. Even though my hiatal hernia was pretty severe, they were able to replace my lapband and put a 14 cc band in. I was so excited that I didn't have to remove it permanently. Do you know what size band you have?

Cripes. The total bills submitted to my insurance totaled $50K. Fortunately I had already met my deductible for the year and only had to meet the remainder if my out of pocket max of $2K so I only had to shell out $895 total. Was banded on 12/21/12 and have yet to pay anything for any of my follow ups or bloodwork. I had my surgery at St. Alexis in Hoffman Estates by Dr. Kane jr. From the Kane bariatric center.
  4. My psych.eval was done by a licensed social worker. She is certified to do Bariatric evaluations and a part of the Bariatric team at the hospital.
  5. Mine was done at the bariatric center of excellence and I didn't have much choice in the matter. He definitely isn't someone I wanted to chat with or would seek help from on purpose. Just didn't mesh well, but it's just a routine thing and not that bad just to make sure you aren't a psychopath who is addicted to drugs or whatever so if you are worried, maybe just ask for a referral to see someone or if your office has an in-house psych, see them even if you never plan to see them ever again.

    Big Questions.....Thank You

The type of surgeon who does the lapband and gastric bypass is called a BARIATRIC (bear-ee-ack-tric) SURGEON. Just be sure that the one that he refers you too is covered by your insurance. Mine tried to refer me to a specific surgeon and I think it was because he gets a cut for referring patients.....lol. Best of luck!
  7. Thanks Alot for the info. i will surely tell him about my coveraged. So after u got refered to a bariatric surgeon is he the one whos gonna guide u to the psyc and seminar and all those good stuff?
  8. Hmm... Mixed emotions. Good to have someone who knows you yet probably preferable from someone who deals with bariatric patients on a more regular basis. If it isn't something he has done before, then I am not sure he will have the right perspective on it. My therapist is wonderful and I am still seeing her on a weekly basis (and will continue to see her probably eventually only once a month for at least 2 years post-op). She only works with bariatric surgery patients so she has invaluable advice and insight into the situation. I think maybe getting referral from your surgeon might be best as they likely have people they work with who are used to what they (and insurance) is really looking for.

    Insurance help

Jersrose is right. Your employer chose the plan without bariatric benefits because it was most likely less money. No need to dump on UHS. But there are many states that do not offer WLS even under Obamacare. Alex posted a topic on this last year btw.
  10. I had mine through Kaiser so cal...did the classes at the orange health pavilion. I went to Pacific Bariatric in San Diego with Dr. Taller. The doctor I went to see at Kaiser told me that I would have to have a bypass, but Dr. Taller felt that the sleeve was the better choice for me. They will also let you change surgeons if you're not comfortable with what they tell you.
  11. Yes. My insurance company Medica required it and for me there was no getting around it if I wanted it covered. I too had started with a doctor that was not a part of a center of excellence and had to switch. I will say I am very happy that I did because of the enormous care system put in place by my center of excellence. For me I think it was a blessing. So much so that I have moved states and insurance companies and bought insurance that has my center of excellence in another state covered in network. I just did not want to change because they are so good. So now, I drive 6 hours for an appointment but am thrilled with the care and level of service I get because they are a center of excellence. Some of the benefits for me were: a team of bariatric specialists who many have gone through this surgery themselves. I have a nurse assigned to me and she herself had bypass 14 years ago, my nutritionist, psychologist, bariatrician and surgeon are all right there in the clinic and speak to one another. . The clinic is set up for bariatric patients in a way that makes it more comfortable. Larger chairs, examine rooms, equipment. Even the hospital where they performed my surgery. They have a bariatric wing, each bariatric suite private. I was shocked how well I was treated and how comfortable they made me. I am not sure if they are all like that but I know they had to earn their status. I hope things work out for you and you are able to work through it in a way that makes you happy.

    Pre-Op Diet?

My pre-op diet started today 3/18 anc consists of Bariatric Advantage shake for breakfast and lunch. If I want a AM snack it is to be 6 oz tomato juice or low cal vit c fruit juice. At night I can make dinner or some of the low card ww meals, lean cruisine, etc. PM snack can be 1 oz cheese and fruit, or yogurt and nuts, or another protein shake. I was a bit hungry come dinner time tonight but I think this will be liveable. Only 26 more shakes still surgery.
  13. I've had my consultation with Dr. Stowers (via phone since I live out of state) and so far it has been a good experience. I'm wondering if anyone has gone to him for the sleeve? If so, what was your experience like? Any complications? For fellow sleevers that are a few years out, how has your progress been and are you maintaining? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
  14. I agree this is a serious surgery and if you can't stop smoking pot they should disqualify you from surgery, my Dr wouldn't even do it on people that smoke cigarettes. Just like alcohol it is not recommended anywhere you read. DaleCruse you aren't the Bariatric police I can comment any way I feel. Sent from my N9519 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Alcohol after Sleeve

This is mostly out of curiosity. But i know you're much more likely to get drunk quicker with alcohol after bariatric surgery but what about vomiting from alcohol? Do you puke your brains out like a person normally would from excess alcohol consumption? Or does that not happen since you're consuming a much smaller quantity of alcohol. Like I have no idea if you could end up puking excessively from 6 oz of alcohol even with impaired digestion

    Ice cream?

Healthier is a matter of perspective. Are you looking for higher Protein content? Lower sugar content? I've read lots of great recipes for homemade protein ice cream. Both of my go-to bariatric food websites, theworldaccordingtoeggface.com and bariatricfoodie.com, both have recipes for protein ice cream. For low sugar, you would just have to look around. Your local place might have some sugar free option, not sure about Diary Queen. For store bought stuff, I prefer pre-portioned stuff. It keeps me from having to measure out servings...because my tiny tummy is not going to tell me it's full of ice cream in only 1/2 cup or whatever a "serving" is on the label. I like the Breyer's/Edy's Carbwise ice cream bars line...although, I count total carbs rather than net carbs, so have to really read the label to figure out the total carb count. I think the last time I bought some, the total carbs was around 11 carbs..which I can work into my day. ~Kat

@ i had my surgery done by Dr Foote in Grand Haven on the lake shore of lake michigan. He actually practices out of grand rapids but comes to GH. He is a leading Dr in the sleeves surgery and has done some ground breaking surgery with the sleeve. Hes an awesome doctor with an absolutely awesome supoort staff to back him up. I feel i made tue best decisiom by going to him. I live in muskegon but chose dr foote over the resident bariatric surgeon in muskegon. Best choice i have ever made. I can call tue office or email any of the staff and actually have cell numbers of tye staff to call them day or nite with pressing questions. They also have an awesome bariatric group that meets twice a month.

    Sleeve = anorexia?

The mental aspect is the major component as the disordered eating behavior is accompanied by a distorted self-image. Anorexics can. literally, be starving and look like they are starving but continue to perceive themselves as fat. You might consider their beliefs delusional as they fit the definition--an unshakeable belief not shared by most other people (i.e., that they are fat). Many anorexics feel out of control is many areas of their lives and use food as the one area where they have the power to control intake. People who have bariatric surgery generally don't have disordered eating behavior--they are not surviving on 2 saltines and a cup of tea. After post-op restrictions are lifted, most WLS patients follow their doctor's orders. Although it may take some time, their self-images also adjust so that they no longer see themselves as fat. And WLS surgery patients don't use food to give themselves a feeling of control, although many report feeling pride in mastering formerly out-of-control impulses to overeat. (Sorry, don't mean to lecture, but I'm a psychologist!)

    Dr. Ariel Ortiz surgery fee

Dr Ortiz is one of top 15 Bariatric surgeons & he did mine two years ago. I had no complications what ever lost 85 pounds & feel great. I know six others who have done well with him also. I paid $6500 then & it was well worth it. Included 4 nights st Marriott Hotel that had fantastic accomodations
  20. I forgot to mention, it was specifically on the bariatric (sleeve) diet at the hospital on full liquids. that and potato soup. Frankly hospital made soup is total crap...and the tomato was HORRIFIC but at home I make it quite often. I am a bit further than you are, but I like it over a scoop of cottage cheese Sounds odd, but try it LOL Umm when you are allowed heh heh

    Jumped through the last hoop!

Della Street, When is your surgery? If you haven't had your psych eval, or nutrition consult, I really liked the psychologist, Dr. Olin, and the nutritionist Michelle Berman. They regularly work with bariatric patients.Dr. Olin is in Tempe, and Michelle is in Mesa.
  22. Just got back from Mexico with my partner. I had my surgery in NY. I had a bmi of 40 so insurance covered it. She only had bmi of 32 so we went to Mexico after we spoke to my bariatric surgeon about it. We are both nurses and even my surgeon supported medical tourism. He says they are just as qualified. We used Fernando Garcia. He is an accredited bariatric surgeon. he does about 10 sleeves a week which is more than my surgeon in NYC. We were in an actual hospital. She received blood work, x-Ray, EKG and check up from 3 doctors (2 worked with Dr. Garcia and one was an internal medicine doctor.) we also met the anesthesiologist prior to the surgery. Everything happened just as they said it would. The hospital was simple ( Florence hospital) but clean. The hotel (Marriott) was great. Everyone spoke English and answered all of our questions. she had her surgery exactly 2 weeks ago and went back to work today 12 pounds lighter. as far as the insurance coverage after you should call your insurance company and also ask your primary doctor if they can follow you after the procedure to monitor the surgical site and lab work. They will also know what they can do within insurance guidelines. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions. We were very happy wih our choice.
  23. Sure we can be bariatric surgeon buddies. Have a nice day!

    Question about psych eval

Mine was done by the person on staff through my bariatric program. Are you required to find your own or does your program have someone they recommend?
  25. Hi everyone! I'm checking in, as this is day 5 still in the hospital. My swallow test/x-ray showed a complication, so I went back the OR yesterday for another upper endoscope. The result showed a stitch was causing a small kink in my sleeve. After this fix, I have turned the corner for recovery! I'm now able to keep clear liquids down, which is magical!! Shout out to my bariatric team, they are truly amazing! I'm probably going home today!!!![emoji258][emoji170] Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
