    Vitamins!!

I use Bariatric Advantage brand. I used them pre-surgery as well. They are expensive but to me it's worth it to have something designed for bariatric patients. Some folks save money by taking Flintstones vitamins 2 times a day. Whatever you do, don't take gummies as they don't provide enough vitamins, at least thats what mu surgeon says. Vitamins!!

What brand of Vitamins are you taking?! I am on the look out for my vitamins for after surgery (30 days till). Are you using Bariatric brands or just regular store bought brands? I will be taking Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 sublingual, complete Multivitamin and a Calcium Vitamin . Does anyone use Nature Made brand? Thanks in advance!

  5. You're welcome. My psychiatrist deals with bariatric patients in her routine practice at the hospital, so I think she should know what she's talking about. I'm 7 months post-op and haven't noticed any depressive episodes or extra anxiety as a result of drugs not working. I take Prozac and Rexulti.
  6. I feel your pain. The doctor who did my EGD went on "vacay" the day after my procedure on July 11 so I'm stuck waiting for the results. I just want to get them back and for them to send to my bariatric surgeon......

    Here I go again!

In 2008, I had surgery for the lap band. I never really did lose that much weight with it - I started off at 220 or so. I think the lowest I got down to was 140 or so. I also had reflux before I had the band, so as you might imagine, the band made it worse. In 2017, my band slipped; I couldn't even drink water, nothing could go down, so the band was removed immediately. The surgeon who removed it is a bariatric surgeon, so I mentioned my real concern about gaining the weight back. He then suggested the sleeve. One year almost to the day, I went through surgery for the sleeve. My doctor also fixed the hiatal hernia that had developed from the band. I knew the sleeve surgery had its risks, particularly since I already had scarring from where the band used to be. However, all went well, and I am so happy that I went through it. I feel fantastic, no more reflux, no more antacids, and I lost approximately 105 pounds from when I had the band. I fluctuate between weighing 112 to 115 pounds. I haven't been this weight in 30 years. Part of my concern about the band removal was the prospect of needing to take prednisone in the future. I have a autoimmune disorder (sarcoidosis) that is mostly dormant but flared up once, and I needed to take prednisone for six months in order to function. I must have gained about 50 or 60 pounds while on steroids - my appetite was voracious. I was afraid that if I didn't have something like the band or the sleeve to curb my eating, I could really gain weight if I needed to go back on prednisone. I hope your surgery went well today!

    Obesity domino effect ?

And Stella S, if you came to my city Mount Vernon and my County Knox County Ohio you would see more Obese people than you could shake a stick at, and I see them starting in Toddler- hood, I see so many 80 and 100 pound ones. Makes me wish I had a pulpit to preach the Joys of Bariatrics and what it has done in My Life! Would I have accepted the advice? No and 8 fear they would not either, I thought I was doomed, without hope,no place to turn, the world either ignored or hated my Obese Self, and I was disappointed and hated myself more. It took a lot more gumption , bravery and chutzpah than most people contain to search out WLS at nearly 70, truly the fact I probably would die soon. had a Big Motivation, I decided it wouldn't hurt to try since I was destined for death, even if I died on an Operating Table, I would have at least tried, nobody thought I could succeed at anything anyway. There was just enough Red- headed spunk, enough " Don't Tred on Me" that I inherited from the strong New England side of the Family that I was going to Do This or Bust! And it took over 3 years, 1 month and a week to finally achieve it but Achieve It I DId and I am a smaller healthier glob of SUCCESS no one gave me credit for. I may be scarred, slightly bloodiedbut I STAND TALL AND BROKEN-DOWN BY LIFE NO MORE! Frustr8 is getting fine, better and better each day I live, and I am a Force to Contend with!
  10. Well more update, turns out I do NOT have a fracture either normal or stress produced, I have trochanter bursitis, mycenter of balance changing put. extra stress there? I will probably have my left cataract removed within a few weeks, Dr Koehler says I could wait up to a year but it will only get more cloudy, my visual discernment will only get worse, already have a yellow tinge to every thing, double vision and printing leaning to the left, so why postpone things? Hey I'm getting cuter and somewhat younger in appearance, want to see Good- looking Men if they happen My Way, don't want snuck,up on cause I couldn't see clearly! Yesterday when I was at Doctor Appointment # 3 I received a call from Valerie, Dr Needlemans Right-hand CNA - nurse person. So today when things settle down I'll return her call! This morning , Chico from Lincare came , recalibrated and adjusted my C-Pap, we tried it out and Mr Smiley Face emoji showed up, changed out my mask/ nasal pillows size as I am not as BIG a girl as once I was. I believe I will be able to wear it tonight instead of removing it in my sleep! Yippee Skippee Yahoo! I do concede I sleep better, no nightmares when I wear it. Maybe they had to do with insufficent oxygenation? Now I have next the Dermotologist about the brown discoloration/ mask left on my cheeks that strangers are accusing me of being an abuse victim and trying to hide it! Yeah I live in a strangely suspicious town, don't I? One lady pressed into my hand a business card for New Directions, our local Battered Woman Shelter, when I protested. that I really didn't need it, she said "Just Keep it, We All will need it Someday!" Last person who tried that is securely DEAD, and no, he died willfully on his own. Thought he knew more than his doctors, turned out he was wrong and it was Fatal in the long run. Then Both Tomkitten and I have Overnight Sleep Eval/Studies to be run . His to establish need, mine to ascertain my residual degree because I will probably be one of the minority Bariatric surgery did not cure, since it is STRONG Heredity in my family Tree. NBD, I'm strong, I can handle it, surmount it for my best benefit, and it would give TK a strong Co- morb to go with his 2 secondary and onward toward WLS for himself. < 40 BMI ---be danged ! He's well over 35 so we will see how things do progress! Still need complete Blood Labs before MY Next Clinic visit. Other-wise my PCP says I am in Wonderful Shape for the Shape I am in, still think he feels I will either implode or explode one of these days! And I am securely below 200 and I SHALL NEVER RETURN THERE AGAIN✋!😛👊!
  11. Well, Sandra at 9 months I was much thinner, wearing much smaller clothes, the Bad Parts- I thought I had poor skin color, looked like Road Kill and wondered if people were lying or making fun of me for my surgery appearance when they said " GOSH YOU LOOK GOOD" because. I thought I looked pretty okay back when I was obese too. But Happy to say, it's 10,5 Months now, I have c9me to terms with the fact I may never LOOK quite the SAME as I used to, but the NEW ME is still quite cool. Although I am quite fair, a curse of Celtic heritage, I have developed a little light freckling and tan, don't go out walking in the high sunlight between 10 AM and 2-4 PM, but if Shirley Mc Claim and the Late Doris Day could rock it, why not ME? My hair , the other Celtic gift, since it is Strawberry Blonde and naturally thin, as long as I use warm water, no mousses, gels or hair spray to mat it down, looks passable fair. And it went into a pixie style when I first saw hair on my comb or in the shower. Praise God I didn't go completely bald, but if it had gotten worse I might have shaved it bald like the guys do, 3/4 of my ex- friends thought I was really losing weight and hair due to chemo and wasn't being HONEST with them. They just couldn't accept someone over 70,could actually seek and be successful with Bariatric Weight Loss. Their error, you are NEVER ARE TOO OLD to make positive changes in your LIFE, and if I had been on Chemo, hey I do respect those people too, but it wasn't any of " their beeswax" as my youthful peers used to say. And those downers , if they can't accept truth, they are NOT what I want in my life in the first place. So this month, I put a Big Smile on my face, rock my new colorful size. 18 clothes, for the first time in my adult life I'm wearing leggings, capris, maybe a pair of shorts or 2 before summer is over, spent TOO TOO MANY YEARS wearing gray, black, Brown or navy to be in the background where I thought I belonged, now if it fits I'm going to wear it, my skin looks a lot less MUDDy in flattering shades. And if I can accept the changes, exude confidence, then I will be a pleasant person the RIGHT PEOPLE will be drawn to, if not, plenty other fish in this Big Blue Sea, aren't there?😝Frustr8, the former Shrinker Back into the Woodwork person who finally herself, and likes Herself more for IT!

It does sound like too many carbs in the evening, you're right! Your breakfast sounds great. Is there any way with your job that you could have a morning and afternoon snack of like 100 calories? That would keep you from going too long without food. And from eating too many carbs at dinner. Maybe you and your husband could brainstorm some less carby dinner ideas that are still easy to make. Don't give up! There are websites for bariatric meal ideas. Try Googling some. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

  14. I live in an expat retirement community in Mexico, for half of the year. There are 110 houses in our gated community. The town is about an hours drive from Guadalajara. With the age of the residents in our community (there are over 5 thousand Americans and Canadians), you can imagine that there are a lot of urgent health care issues. The first hospital I went to was a shock to me. It looked like a five star hotel. The café in the lobby was a French bistro. I went for gastro tests, sent there by a bariatric center when I was having some problems with my RNY (done in the US). All was well with me, they just lectured me about the importance of taking my vitamins and eating as advised for a RNY patient. I also had minor surgery and a stay overnight at another hospital. It was a rehab hospital, specializing in sports medicine. It was spotless and my room and bathroom were like a holiday inn room, but smaller. I have visited friends who have been rushed by ambulance for cardiac and other issues. The hospitals were all private and top notch. Now, Guadalajara is a big city with a lot of different hospitals. They have a excellent Medical school. Many of the surgeons, like mine, had a rotation or a residency in the US. There are also the public hospitals run by the equivalent of Social Security/Medicare. Not at all the same, but many of the same surgeons and specialists. Often, the Dr.s have a private practice, but also work in the public hospitals. I have friends who had kidney transplants and knee replacements there. They had to bring their own family member to help them. It is no frills. Not for me. However the results were successful. The BariatricPal hospital in Tijuana has a wonderful reputation. That is where I would have chosen if I did not have my casa near Guadalajara and friends there for support. So, if you are considering surgery in Mexico, do your research and you can have a very safe and pleasant experience. If you are retired, consider Lake Chapala for a month in the off season. Its beautiful and you could stay around after your surgery and enjoy the culture and the beauty..... and the shopping! (Not the restaurants).

    September 2019 🍂🍁

ahh good luck everyone, my path totally changed with my new bariatric group. I wont be joining the September team. Perhaps, I will be a December snowboarder or a January change your life high roller... No matter what the insurance protocols are, my doctor demands a 6 month weight in. Thus far I have 2 months under my belt. I wont be able to have my final surgery date until November, than I have to have labs done 30 days prior to surgery. I must say, I was disappointing at first but the group at Lenox Hill (NYC) hospital offers a lot of support and state that they do not want to see patients fail. I didn't have this support with my last surgery, need all the help i can get. Also I am scheduled for a host of new exams my 2nd surgeon didn't care for. Also I had to sign a document re: you will not receive a surgery date until all preop is completed! lol To do list: Pulmonary test--Friday, August 23, 2019 1:15 PM EDT Sleep Apnea consultation-Wednesday, July 24, 2019 1:15 PM Upper GI ----- August 26th 8am Nutritional class August 13th 1130am Nutritional one on one August 21st 1pm Completed testing: Abdominal ultrasound, psych clearance, endoscopy, echogram, PCP clearance and initial Blood work,
  16. Endoscopy is a pre-op requirement for bariatric surgery. Sometimes they word thins strange. My patient portal lists an endoscopy as surgery. Insurance tends to word things rather odd as well, and I have never heard of gastric bypass done by endoscopy, only laparoscopically. The only procedure performed by endoscopy is minor stitching, balloon dilation, but never full on surgery. I had laparoscopy RNY, Six incisions plus the drain. I also needed my gallbladder removed. Low functioning Hida scan and turned out to be chronic inflammation. I don’t think any doctor would do open surgery unless in an emergency.

What complications have you lot had

All good responses above. I had the same reaction after visiting some bariatric forums. It’s normal to worry and stress over surgery procedures. There are risks with ANY type of surgery. Talk to your surgeon about the statistics for complications. Know that your team will take good care of you. Your pain will be managed with medication. I’m five years out. No complications.

    pouch reset

Awesomely. I lost a little over 5lbs last week and felt amazing. I am essentially sticking to my modified diet indefinitely. I am actually getting MORE protein now than I did before because I brought back the dreaded protein shakes (which actually taste fine, lol). I still enjoy a "regular" bariatric diet on the weekends, but for the most part I am sticking to this new thing I have going on during the work week. I definitely feel full so much quicker - even cottage cheese is difficult to eat at a full 8oz like I was before.

    Soups, help please!

I used soups and chilis quite a bit after my RNY gastric bypass surgery. I fortified them with protein and that allowed me to quickly reduce my reliance on protein shakes. I put some of the recipes at the end of the following article. How

Struggling with the idea of surgery

Most of us will say we only wish that we had done this surgery sooner. A year ago at this time I could not have imagined doing this. It had a nasty stigma attached to it and a feeling of failure. I met with a regular dietician at the same time as my bariatric consultation. I knew I needed help as I never felt satisfied. I am only 2.5 months out but the restriction you get is really everything it is advertised to be. I had major problems with portion control but now I get that physical reminder and there is just no need to keep going after that. I wish I did this sooner I just didnt want to admit that I needed help. This community has been very helpful during my journey.
  21. I know they have "Sipping Broths" and I bet most of these things at the Bariatric Pal Store. Reasonable prices, great shipping time frame, and all things formulated from our Bariatric Viewpoint. Why enrich Jeff Bezos and his ever- expanding spider of Amazon? And I will tell you, I have been VERY SATISFIED with my BPStore purchases. Planning to redeem some more of the points I have accrued in the Near Future. I get even better delivery time than many things in my Home State(Ohio) and They are in New York!👍😛❤
  22. And although you and I don't always agree, YOU ARE AN ASSET TO BARIATRIC PAL, and your advice tends to Be Spot On. Sometimes it pinches but , hey you're a Truth Teller, and it just maybe was WHAT I needed to👂 Hear!
  23. Frustr8

    Soups, help please!

And I like the veggie broth ftrom W-M as. wrll, use it , coconut and almond. soupbases also I have grown tired of commercial soups. But if you're not, CampbellYES brand butternut squash, Progresso Light, I either Strain out the solids or blenderize them to a smooth consistency. And remember take anything in small anmounts, take them in , but wait between bites, lay your utensil (spoon of fork) down between bites. One of the hardest things for me to learn, its okay to throw things away when you stomach says " No More", although I was a small-town girl type I was raised " country" And we cook lot at a time and aren't naturally wasteful. But Precious Pouch can be a Wicked Strong- willed Emitters of my Life, since my surgeon and I invited her to become the Center of My World, I deal with it Odd isn't it, I use to be Foods Slave, now I am in slavery to an egg- shaped piece of gastric flesh. But most days the positives outweigh the sorrows and miscues I have encountered. Wonderful weigh- tloss, my son , my dietician , and main doctors say I LOOK Good, certainly don't resemble the obese for Years Frustr8, don't know who I shall resemble at the Finish, for I am, at 10 months, still A WORK IN PROGRESS. Dug out snapshots of ME at a comparable weight and that was maybe 1966- 1967, before I married the Late Lamented, my husband of 44 years and the father of my kids, and NO I DO NOT LOOK LIKE HER EITHER! She was a Youthful Chickee- Baby, now I think I LOOK, like RoaD Kill. but Tomkitten,my PCP Dr Carroll, my orthopaedic Dr Doolittle and even my Dietician Roy at Ohio State, they as an Unit tell Me You are doing Fine, looking GOOD, within Okay ,preeminently reaching my Goals at acceptable times, except I am basically on Stage 2 and pureed because I had pouch stricture, jejunal ulcerations, the things that seldom happen to a FINE UPSTANDING SPECIMEN like myself. But day by day I inch to closer to a Final Victory, am an Optimist that ALL will heal, I will come to the terms legally I am a Success with an Elective Proceedure, even at moments that I DONT FEEL SO emotionally, I have taken all my meds, vitamins, minerals, got Q.S. of liquids. So stop beating myself up and realize I am BLESSED. ¬ that much of a MESS. I am down 170 or so pounds from my High Weight, have dropped 130 pounds from Surgery Weight, a wonderous achievement for someone 72 at surgery, now I am 73, in an 18-19 after starting as a 28-30 plump woman size, havi,g to buy Mens Sweats because THAT was what fit over All of Me, not really into Cross-Dressing but one does what one does to keep my body covered. And I was ashamed but felt powerless to affect a change. So IN MANY MANY WAYS my RNY Bariatric surgery saved my life, improved it and I have now a chance at a FUTURE. What will my final chapter of my Journey read like? Even I don't know, but I came" In It to Win It" and came too far to attempt aborting what I HAVE GAINED, no matter how my body feels or acts its been QUITE A 10 1/2 Months, and I am still a Big Lady, but This formerly Fat Lady will sing a HAPPT SONG at the end. This is MY PROMISE and I ALWAYS KEEP MY WORD!😝👍

    Soups, help please!

People rave about the protein soups available here in the Bariatric Pal store! You should check them out. They have quite a variety! I personally didn't get jazzy with soups on the pre-op phase cuz I was supposed to only have broth. So I got bone broth and Central Market HEB low sodium organic chicken and beef broth. I also love the HerbOx Chicken or Beef Bouillon packets that come in a box. They are no sodium but aren't boring and I think are only 10cals. For post op, I would add unflavored protein powder to any broth or cream soup while it was room temp. The protein powder mixes better and without clumps that way. Then I would thin it down with more broth or with Fairlife Milk fat free. And slowly slowly slowly warm in the microwave. If you exceed 140 degrees F, then the protein will coagulate. It's still edible, but you would need to throw it through your Ninja or blender to get rid of the clumps. Good luck and congrats on your coming surgery!
