  1. @Deedee12Thank you! I don't know quite who to talk to @ Aetna, I was thinking a case manager may be able to help me. I too would just barely meet criteria if just applying for a sleeve as I am just obese, have no co-morbidities. In the clinical policy bulltetin there are options A-D for repeat bariatric surgery and all of them require "compliance" with diet and exercise program which is hard to show because when I was successful I did not frequently see a doctor for my band. I started seeing a doctor when my reflux started and i started gaining weight. My doctor prefers to do the removal and revision in 2 different surgeries but if there is no complications will do it all in one. My fear is that if i Just get the lapband removed I will be denied for a sleeve. Even without the "compliance records" I feel like with the damaged lapband evidenced by xray and the reflux and weight gain I should be approved for a revision---I feel that with all the research and data out about lapband complications insurance suggesting another band or a band fix is ridiculous! The person at my doctors office just keeps saying this may be tricky, I want to know from someone at the insurance company what I need to submit exactly to be approved. I have a POS II policy. I don't know who to talk to there or where to start and would like to speak to someone before submission because I know a denial can be difficult to fight. I am also choosing to go out of network because the previous physician I had seen did not catch all the problems visible on Xray with my band. I appreciate all of your advice, thank you! If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate it! Thanks! Maura
  2. I talked to one agency, and that was enough of that! I didn't like the idea that they only represent "some" of the facilities. If you go online, and do a search, you will find a better variety. Personally, I would Call Mr. Yanez (above) at Bariatric Pal Hospital. That is where I will be having my surgery on 10/1!
  3. I am going to Mexico on 9/30 for sleeve surgery on 10/1. I did a lot of research and my final decision was to go with Bariatric Pal Hospital in Tijuana. You can find lots of WLS centers in Mexico, just do your research. Oh, and btw, before you go check to see about follow up with you pcp/med insurance. Mine will not cover visits for that specific issue, however, I have spoken with my pcp and I think I have found a way around it. If not, I will be going to another clinic and just pay for the visits out of pocket.

    New and Considering DS

I have been through a Rex program (I was even in their commercials back in 2010) for lapband but that surgeon is no longer here - and just had a revision through Nc bariatrics performed at wake med Cary to ds. Revision was 6/6- my lapband stopped helping me- I could either eat anything or nothing. So I started a year ago trying to get ducks in a row to do this- my insurance required 6 months of dr supervised weight loss visits (I lost nothing) and when I missed the November appt it set me back and then insurance initially denied it bc they said the psych visit didn’t say it exactly how they wanted so he rewrote his report resubmitted and approved. So anyways I was approved in March and I delayed surgery to 6/7 bc life - It’s surgery and that is kind of scary- but so is driving a car, anything can happen anywhere. You just have to have faith. In the hospital I managed pain with something via IV that worked great- coming home they sent me hydrocodone - I only took it at night to sleep comfortably and managed anything else with Tylenol and I stopped taking the hydrocodone after a week. I had more pain with this than my c sections but I also had my lapband removed a hernia repair and the ds. But it has been manageable. The preop liquid diet was hard, less hard post op but I’m sick of sweet and ready for purées! I am 41, no co-issues. With my lapband I went from 330 to 250 and maintained there for 7 years and then started having issues. I got back to 301.9 when I started this pre op diet. I’m down 20lb total in 3 weeks. It’s not the easy way out but it’s a step many of us need to get control over food. I was open with what I was doing - if anyone had anything negative to say they never said it to me
  5. well, I guess I'll come back to you with another question. Why would ANYONE have surgery unless there was a medically necessary reason? (plastic surgery exempted) If you believe that this may not be medically necessary, your comorbidities are well-controlled, and you think you can do it with diet/exercise, you may not be ready for bariatric surgery. Based on the information you've posted, you have a BMI of 37 (obese) and you have at least 1 comorbidity that is known to be caused by or at least exacerbated by obesity and can contribute to reduced life span. So, as someone who has worked on the insurance side of things, you have medically necessary reasons for having the surgery, hence your assertion that you will "most likely be approved by insurance". Insurance companies do not like to pay for surgeries unless they are deemed medically necessary. Maybe you're feeling like your support group members situations are more serious than yours? I agree that if someone has heart issues, the situation appears somewhat more critical. But, that doesn't reduce the significance of sleep apnea. Did you know that sleep apnea contributes to heart issues, hypertension, and increases your risk for stroke? I'd say that's pretty serious. You may not have those things right now, but these are known consequences of long term sleep apnea. Same thing with diabetes. If your support group-mates cite diabetes as a cause, then likely theirs has been poorly controlled, which contributes to long term side effects (vascular issues, neuropathy, retinopathy, kidney disorders). For me: I didn't have heart issues. I didn't have diabetes. However, that doesn't mean that I wasn't on a direct path headed towards those things. My BMI was 46 at my highest. I had sleep apnea. I had some joint issues. All of those things were relatively well controlled. The key for me was that diet and exercise had not worked long term. I could lose, but I couldn't maintain. Sorry for the length, I guess I just see it from the perspective of someone who has their feet in healthcare and insurance. Hope I haven't confused you more.

    Tips for pre-op liquid diet

I grab the premier pre made pretty regularly my rd said to use bariatric advantage pre op - it was best for liver shrinking - I mostly did that throwing a few others in. Fusion powders taste better to me than bariatric advantage but I need to finish these tubs up
  7. My DS surgery was april of 2018 with Dr. Bruce at Bariatrics of NC . All has been good, but then I rate having stomach pains really bad that lasted a long time when it happened just two months ago. It has only happened about 3-4 times, so naturally I went back to my surgeon and spoke to him about it. I thought maybe I was dehydrated , but he said NOPE, you have an internal hernia going on... and that I would need surgery as soon as I can make the appointment. Sooner than later he stressed! He could not do the surgery which disappointed me but he referred me to Dr. Lindsay Sharpe. So 1 week later I made an appointment which I had surgery done with Dr. Sharpe just yesterday 6/17/19 lasted about an hour. It started out as a diagnostic lap surgery to see exactly what was going on , and indeed it was the hernia that they found. They fixed it and I went home today and I feel a lot of pain but otherwise I just have to rest and no lifting for 3 weeks and no exercise for 6 weeks. They said because of the weight loss that it opened up a gap around my intestines causing blockage and this happened. Not sure on all details until my follow up next Tuesday but once I know ALL the details , I will post on here. Its funny now when you have surgery , you don't see the surgeon afterwards... you have to wait until follow up appointment to really get full details. his Medical assistant filled me in but not totally, so I am kinda in limbo on details. I cant wait for Tuesday to find out what he did exactly ! Has anyone had this happen to them after DS surgery?

  9. Hi there! I bought a few books before my op too as I knew the mental change would be a longer journey than the physical one. The book I've dipped into most has been Living With Bariatric Surgery by Denise Ratcliffe and Portion Perfection for Bariatrics. The former is very helpful at explaining the what to think about before you have the op. The latter is expensive but gives a great visual guide as to the portion sizes you'll be able to eat post-op (cos who knows what 150g or 120ml of food looks like?). Hope this helps! Feel like I'm taking 10 steps back

I agree with catwoman7. I have had a stricture for months. I had the same symptoms. I've been dilated 4 times with a 5th one coming ip at the end of the month. Did you have RNY? It's a long road to recovery. But it is possible. You need to find a bariatric surgeon near you and get this diagnosed. They do an upper GI to diagnose a stricture. Keep us posted. And good luck! weight Regain after gastric sleeve

You know how to eat. The bariatric plate is 1/2 protein, 1/4 veggies and 1/4 grains and you're supposed to start with the protein and not move on to the next part of the plate if you're full. Keep portion sizes to 1/2 cup. Avoid a lot of starches and sugars. You've got this. You can do this.

  16. I don't worry about the programming - that's why I do the cross-fit/olympic lifting class 3x weekly - that's up to the trainer I pay for that. He knows way better than me. But the technique and form coaching is key. As for nutrition - I met with an RD who works with athletes but has also worked with bariatric patients - so she understood my situation. We upped my carbs from about 70g daily to about 110g daily because I was cannibalizing muscle on work out days. (Which is pretty much 6 out of 7). Also, I try to down a simple protein shake within 30 minutes after a workout - just protein powder and water or a muscle milk thing because replenishing the protein immediately after the workout is important. So far, so good.
  17. Hey Everyone, I am very new to BariatricPal and am wanting to get in touch with anyone from Calgary, Alberta! I am expected to have VSG this summer and was wondering if anyone went through the Calgary Adult Bariatric Clinic?
  18. The Multivitamin One sold by Bariatric Pal store is my favorite so far. The Celebrate made me super nauseous as did the Bariatric Advantage.

    I can't stop losing weight

^^^^This a thousand times! I honestly think if you are having this issue, you must treat food as you would a prescription. You will need to be regimented, and determined and disciplined to go on a weight gaining program, but not just any weight--a muscle gaining regimen. And for that you really need a trainer who understands sports medicine and bariatric medicine. Cuz you do face challenges. For instance, are you logging? Do you track every bite that goes in your mouth? If you do, then you at least know a baseline both calorically and from a macro prospective. So you can alter your plan to increase your nutrition. The most obvious ways are NOT to add sugar. That is a recipe for RH. I have it. It sucks. Juice is TERRIBLE for that! But the most obvious way to add back cals and nutrition are to add back your protein drinks as supplements on top of your food. And eat very nutrient dense and calorically dense foods that allow you eat more of them cuz they are hedonic stimulants (lasagna casserole without noodles, casseroles, gooey things with cheese). Also adding in psyllium and miralax have been lifesavers for me... Hope those ideas help. If you are losing, I'd personally up my cals by 10-15% for the day...and get at least 1 meal in that had 30g of protein for that meal, cuz Dr. Longo says that aids in muscle building...
  20. One of the best gifts out of my surgery was working and overcoming my old behaviors. I traded stress/emotional eating with exercise and did some counseling. I started with walking. My fitness level was not great. I could walk a half hour and built it to an hour after surgery. My exercise time is “me time” No one gets to interrupt it unless its an emergency. I use that time to process, bariatric issues, life’s stresses and major life events. I have cried tears on the treadmill. It helped me deal with a death in the family I have exercised out anger and frustration. I pedaled a stationary bike and worked on my relationship with food/behavior change. I wish I can say surgery changes old behaviors 100%. Years out, my stress emotional eating is less. I acknowledge when it slips back in as a coping mechanism. I know I can stop and do something else not food related to cope.

  24. I know after I took Ducolax pills, got the expected relief, the next day I had very loose stool, pretty full of mucus, almost the same texture I had post-Pancreatitis, and there's A Disease You do not want. It was in 2015 and I still remember It well. I NEVER want it again. I have always been told Kidney Stones are the MOST PAINFUL thing one can have. If Kidney Stones are a 10, pancreatitis is a 9.875, I tear up 💦 at the memory. I believe I would prefer Abdominal Surgery with Novacaine to it any day! I hope my Doctor Needleman doesn't read Bariatric Pal, if he does I'll have another non-sedation, non- anesthesia. Upper Endoscopy like they accidentally did the 26th of last October. If you, like me, have hair in the red/ginger family remind them redheads require more sedation than the average brunette patient. Not something I'm. making up, it is a definate fact , and there are studies to prove it. Lucky for them I didn't panic, most people might. I just laid there and watched everything, Much Better than You-Tube because this was not prestaged, this was the Real Thing and Totally Cool!

    The Maintenance Thread

Please ignore this information If does not apply to your situation. (newbies and people in weight loss mode this is not for you) Are there similarities in bariatric lifestyle and disordered eating? I had to wrap my head around this question in maintenance mode. Where do I draw the line between bariatric healthy habits “rules” and unhealthy obsession? (I’m not diagnosing anyone – Just information to think about) Finding your balance test: http://www.findingbalance.com/eating-issues-test-part-1/ The following was copied from a website: click here Orthorexia: The preoccupation with eating healthy. desire to consume pure, healthy foods, obsessing over maintaining a perfect diet rather than an ideal weight. They may cut out any food that is considered unhealthy or impure. Wanting to eat a healthy, pure diet can be a great thing. However, when these compulsive behaviors and mental preoccupations with healthy eating start to impair your quality of life, you may end up suffering from severe weight loss, malnutrition, or some other type of medical condition based on severe diet restrictions. If you are suffering from Orthorexia Nervosa, you may also suffer from negative self-worth, negative body image, and become obsessively dependent on your healthy eating lifestyle to the point of social isolation.
