  1. If it helps I weighed myself the day after I left the hospital (day four) and I'd gained 3 pounds. When I had my one week check-up three days later I was down 10 pounds from my surgery which means 13 pounds in three days. I think a lot of it had to do with the IV fluid and the not being able to have a... um, well no delicate way to say this, a bowel movement, for the first few days. It DOES come off though so don't stress too much!
  2. I'm jealous lol I'm six weeks out of my surgery and I still struggle with my fluid intake. I'm barely able to meet the 48 oz minimum and 64 oz is just so... daunting. I guess I'm the odd one that feels full when I drink. I was in the hospital for three days for the simple reason that they couldn't get me to drink enough and yet at my one week check-up after my surgery they still gave me a 9/10 score, which is apparently really good. But as to your worry... every day does get just a little bit better and easier. I'm finding it easier to get that fluid in as for the first month I struggled to get in 32 oz and now I've worked up to 48 so maybe eventually I'll be able to get to that preferred 64. I suggest though that if you have any questions that you bring it up with the doctor at your one week check up!

    Pre-Op Diet

Lucky all of you! Wednesday starts my 2 week "milk diet" of either skim milk or Fairlife equivalent (20 ounces 3x a day) plus bone broth and drinks under 10 calories. Clear liquids only the day before. Then a 2-2-2 week diet for full liquids, pureed food, and soft foods before trying regular solid food post-surgery. I've been doing protein shakes for breakfast and lunch with lean meat and steamed veggies dinner for the 3 weeks prior to my liquid diet to help reduce my food dependency. Its UGHs but will be good for me in the long run since I know keeping carb or sugar withdrawal from being paired with surgery will help the mental game.
  5. Don’t weigh yourself for at least a week after surgery - it is often higher (5-10 pounds) than your pre-surgery weight because of the reasons listed above. Even if you can drink liquids easily, don’t let that fool you. First, your stomach is extremely scarred and healing, so it probably can’t tell you that you are overdoing it. Second, just because you can drink more, don’t. There’s a reason why we are given strict limits - it’s not only for our healing stomachs, but to get used to constantly measure/weigh our food so that we stay on track. My sleeve failed for that reason (I had my revision on 3/3) so I’m being extra careful now.
  6. it's from the IV at the hospital - you're full of salt water. I've heard of people gaining 10 or more lbs from it. It takes a few days to work its way out of your system. I wouldn't step on the scale until you're at least a week out of surgery.

  8. I am 16 days out now from the February 19 surgery.I think everything is going pretty good.I went for my 1st post op visit on Tuesday. For the 1st 2 weeks I was on for liquids and pureed.I have now been cleared to go to soft foods. Can't tell you how good the 1st couple of meals tasted. I can only get about 2 oz down at a time and definitely have to eat slow. My stomach definitely tells me when it's full and that's when I stop. I still have about 1 protein shake or smoothie each day to get the required protein. Been averaging about 450 calories per day.And he told me I could start regular food in about 3 weeks. I can't wait to have a salad. I have been taking vitamin since in the hospital. And my doctor Said to go ahead and start my full regimen again.I was really surprised that if they have us on liquids and pureed that we are able to swallow pills okay. I've been a little frustrated With the scale. Have lost only 6 lb since surgery. I am not obsessing and I know things will change. I am probably just in the slow losers club.
  9. March 2019 now, time for a Seroquel/Quetiapine update, had G/BP in July 2017. I’m still on Seroquel. How are the other bipolar sufferers managing the meds and their symptoms? Have gone from 198lbs to 140lbs/ 14 stone to 10 stone/ 89kgs to 65 kgs. Still on Seroquel, still eating when I’m drugged, every morning I look at the plate or bowl on my bedside table and try and work out what I ate when drugged and hungry the night before. Hate the drug. My BMI has come down to 25 which is normal, but I know it would be less if I didn’t eat at night after taking Seroquel.

    Changing Tactics

Yep @Danny Paul I too noticed this from about the 18month mark. It's tiny changes, right? I can now eat 4-5oz of protein at dinner rather than 3oz. I can have larger portions of raw and leafy veggies. I tolerate more fat in my diet. And the bedtime snack is alive and well and living in my house. Grrrr! It sucks to have to be so diligent, doesn't it? I do weigh and measure especially things like nuts and nutbutters and cheese because they add up so quickly and my "estimated" serving size is NEVER what I "think" it is. LOL. Just like the awesome visual from @GreenTealael!!! I think you will figure out a plan that works for you because you are diligent and aware and take ownership of your food relationships. And we can hardly ask for more than that! Right? So I have faith you will figure it out. I do wonder though, because I've observed so many people 2+ years out struggle with night time hunger, do you think this "is a thing"--a phenomenon experienced by most post op-ers at 2 years or so? Cuz I do think it is a huge culprit for scale creep. But like Tea said, IF is a wonderful tool. If I didn't IF 3-4 days per week with caloric restriction, I believe I would be up at least 10-15 lbs already. Instead, with IF, I'm able to maintain and defend 130-135lbs, but not without considered attention to detail. Luckily. I like attending to detail, and eating as I do. I don't feel deprived, even with IF or with calorie restriction on ADF. But I do wish it was more steady-state and I suspect bedtime snacks do impact this teeter-totter.

    OOTD

Thank you all for your inspirational pictures and notes. Yesterday I went for my six month post op in my first new outfit since my surgery. You all look so fabulous I can’t even imagine looking nearly as wonderful as you all do. I started my adventure into healthy living at a starting weight of 315 pounds in 2017. Due to unforeseen circumstances was unable to get surgery until August 2019. I managed to lose 35 pounds in two years so weighed in at 280 on the morning of my surgery. i have been on a plateau for two weeks and relied on all your postings to keep the frustration at bay. I had wanted to. E out of the 200s by my appointment and weighed in at 200.4 yesterday. Close but no go. Dr. Luc advised he was very happy with my progress. Then this morning, I waved goodbye to the two hundreds. Thank you for all the support you offer by sharing your adventure and results.
  13. It is much too early for that... hang in there . I felt the same way but it will quickly change .. you will be so amazed.. just follow the instruction , make it your purpose in life right now the drink as much water as you can. the things you can have now are lilmited for a reason ,stick to it ...your time to change it up will come . be patient and remember it took time and bad eating habits to get us here and it's gonna take time and good eating habits to take us where we want to go.... Don't complain to yourself just encourage yourself and celebrate everyday you are closer to your promised land. I only regret I didn't do this 10 or 20 years ago......
  14. What a ride this journey has been. I never thought I would ever get this far and definitely not this quickly. I have worked so hard though; was super strict on myself from day 1; I feel that is just my nature; it's either 110% or its nothing.. go hard or go home!!! So one morning I just decided this is the day I'm going to start my diet and change my life. I had spent the past 15+ years of my life helping everyone else in my family and ignoring my own health issues mental and physical.. I researched the surgery options and trawled this website for months whilst waiting for my surgery to happen. I found a great doctor and surgeon and he agreed with me that the roux en y bypass was definitely my best chance at success and a future. I took everyone's advice on board but ultimately I knew it would be my choice and my decision to change my life. I also gave up alcohol now nearly 4 years ago.. I started journey at the highest weight of 322LBS with multiple comorbidities and medications keeping me alive. Eventually I went into hospital on October 28th 2019 and had the bypass surgery and I knew there was no turning back; its now on me to prove to everyone including the doubters I could do it!!! Here I am 6 months and 9 days later and this morning I weighed in at 175.5LBS and I'm not sure if my body is even done yet... I've had a few stalls along the way but none longer than 1 week so I've been very lucky; I've stuck to my diet pretty religiously since day one.. I was using protein shakes pretty much for the whole first 5 months with some small things like yoghurt and tuna but the past few weeks I've been adding more carbs and experimenting with real foods and not being so strict but still keeping focused on my weight of course. For the first time in my life I feel normal and I feel happy and excited for the future and I never thought I would get this far 175.5lbs is an amazing effort which equals to 146.5lbs lost gone forever in just over 6 months!!! I hope I can show others it is possible to change your life for the better you just have to be committed, you have to be mentally prepared, you have to be doing this for yourself and nobody else!!! I hope I can be an inspiration to others!!! Love Mikey

  16. OMG ..... If it's the Depo Shot..... STOPPPPPPP!!!!!! Years ago they removed the IUD and started me on the Depo... I gained 50lbs in one month.... it was horrible. Look into the Nuvo Ring. It was the best Birth control EVER.... I tried it all, the Pill (nausea all the time), diaphragm (terrible bladder and yeast infections), Condoms with and without foam (latex-sensitive), IUD (terrible bleeding), the shot (major weight gain, but i didn't bleed), then the Ring. It was the only one that worked for me. Then in my 30ies i had a partial hysterectomy.... OMG it was like the heavens parted and the angels were singing.... At 50 i started menopause and it sucks Ass..... I started gaining weight and couldn't control it, no matter what i did. So i decided enough was enough and paid OOP for a revision to the sleeve. Note: All of the birth control was before i was banded in 2009 SW: 232 LW 143: Removal 2017 at 143. Sleeved 8/28/19 at 173.5, today 131.4

    Confused and Depressed

Me too. I’m still in the hospital and weighed myself 24 hours after my surgery. Up 2.5 kilos. Luckily I won’t have access to a scale until late next week so I don’t have to worry about that headgame. However, to the OP, having surgery doesn’t automatically kickstart everything into high gear all at once. If you look at the stats many people lose between 10-25 pounds the first month, depending on starting weight/BMI and surgery done. The scale may show little to no movement. But things are happening in your body. Even when I had stalls on after my first surgery, I was still losing weight, as I could feel it and see it in the way my clothes fit. I also had a ton more energy. Don’t just focus on the numbers on the scale, there are a lot of non-scale victories to look out for.

    Sleeve surgery/Back surgery

There is no way shedding a ton of weight is not going to help your back issues! Last week me and my two teanage boys were at the grocery store - I handed both my kids just half of what i lost 80 pounds of potatoes and ask them to carry them around the store, They could not do it. That is 4 20 bags and it wore them out after 10 minutes. Now to try and carry 7 20 pounds - That will not be good for the back - Bottom line less weight will help you back out
