  1. I am 10 days post surgery and I can drink water without any restriction at all. I drink constantly and it is really helping with the weight loss. I am down over 12 pounds since the surgery day and that does not include the 6 pounds of fluids I took on while in the hospital, so 18 pounds since discharge. I consume 600-700 calories a day and about 90 ounces of water minimum. I walk for 45 minutes a day on most days, sometimes in 2 different sessions. I am now down over 34 pounds since starting the preop diet. Follow the instructions to a T and it will really kick in.
  2. I lost 57 lbs before surgery (I think about 15 of that was on the two-week pre-op diet, though - so 42 lbs before the pre-op diet). you'll likely lose on the low side the first month after surgery, since for most people, a lot of that huge drop the first month is water weight, and your water weight is long gone. Mine was, too. I lost 16 lbs the first month. after the first month, I don't think it makes a difference if you lost weight pre-surgery or not. surgeons usually quote you the average weight loss (60-70% of your excess weight), because statistically, that's where most people end up. But a statistic is a statistic - there are always people who are going to lose more or less than that. If you really work at it, you can do better than that. I almost never went off my plan and lost 100% of my excess weight.
  3. I used to get these leering comments and stares from men... when I was 12. Before I gained all my weight. I hope that after losing weight my short hair will be enough to keep them away. Is that wishful thinking? I don't think I can handle unwanted attention from men again.
  4. I have lost 50 lbs in the 7-8 months I've been preparing for surgery, although only a few pounds on the actual pre-op diet. I have read that this will make my weight loss slower or less after surgery. If you lost a lot (like about a third of what you want to lose) before surgery, did you lose slowly or less out of surgery? I have set my goal at 150, but ideally I'd like to get to a "normal" BMI below 140, but I'll see what feels good when I get there. My surgery center said I can expect to get to about 170-180, which is pretty depressing.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

It's totally normal to have stalls and even bumps up a few pounds in any weight loss journey. Just follow your plan, drink your fluid, etc. Look at the trends over time, not just in one week or a few weeks.

    Collagen Peptides

I also take the Vital Proteins collagen powder, but I do not count it toward my protein goals for the day. It's not a good protein source. I take it mainly to help my hair and skin. I figure the protein in it should just be a bonus. If it helps, it helps but I don't want to count on it for my health.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I guess I should have said not everyone can expect to lose the same. At least that’s what the NP at my clinic said about me and their patients statistics on their pre op diet. (When I was Disappointed that I wasn’t losing more). Then again everyones pre op diet is a little different so I guess weight loss on it will vary as well. I know I didn’t lose nearly as much.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Oh no! I would be so upset if I were you! I guess just remember that the weight is coming off, just much more slowly than expected. On the bright side, perhaps you won’t experience the sagging skin that a rapid weight loss can cause?

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Not sure exactly, but my doctor says you can’t worry about wait loss in the first 6 weeks since your body is still healing. I lost 10the first week and then just stalled for two weeks after. I also head some things about too much exercise too soon isn’t good since it could slow down the metabolism and make you more hungry. Not sure on this stuff so you probably want to check back with your doctors or due some more research. I’m just saying I don’t think it is anything to worry about and give yourself time to heal.

Anyone have their surgery in Mexico?

Mine was $4400 total, $400 of which was for a hernia repair. Hers was about $8000-$9000. If I were to do it again I would go to the $4000 one, and if she were to do it again she would do the $8000 one 😆. The surgery itself was a success with zero complications for either of us. I lost 145lbs and am at a healthy BMI and weigh less than I did when I was 12 years old (I’m 46 now) and she has lost 20… yep. 20. But don’t let that be a deciding factor. She ate like a bird before, and ate healthy. The smaller stomach didn’t change that, we should have realized this… we are still trying to figure out what is up with her as there is some underlying issue. We are finding new things with each round of tests, NONE of which have anything to do with her surgery. So again, please don’t use her lack of weight loss as a factor in your decision, it is unique to her, her stomach was removed, her medical team was superb, her experience was flawless, her recovery was fast. Both of our facilities were clean, hers was better decorated and most definitely better suited to the procedure and English speaking patients. My doctor and his assistant were perfectly fluent in English but the hospital staff was not, so a lot of google translate was used by both sides. I’m really laid back and kind of enjoy the occasional adventure so none of that bothered me in the slightest. I never felt like I was at risk, and I recovered almost completely in just a few days.. it was just a little surreal being wheeled into an operating room while a phone robot voice was asking me medical questions in prep. My whole weight loss adventure has been very easy for me… but again I wouldn’t use that as a deciding factor either. I don’t imagine my results or hers would have been any different with any other doctor that performed the same operation. I guess the simplest way to answer this is…. Mine was like a new affordable car, hers was like a new luxury car. Both will get you to where you need to go reliably… what matters is how much you want to spend and what kind of ride are you comfortable with during the journey.

3 weeks po - how many steps?

Thanks @GottaLearnToSlowDown. The low BP & hypoglycaemia were not new to me just went from random episodes to way more frequent events. My dearest friend has Graves so I understand it’s challenges. Excited for you to be able to get back to your previous fitness soon. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    Frustrating Pre-Op PCP Visit

Those meds do initially usually have pretty good weight loss, but from my own experience and the experience of others I've followed on a forum, the effectiveness usually diminished between 2 to 3 months. It wasn't working for me after the third month, and I had terrible side effects like really bad gas.

    Month 2 Stall

Well done on for your efforts so far, you been doing great! Your weight loss for your starting weight is probably above average for the time frame. As you are very close to the healthy weight range for your height weight loss is going to be lower and slower, and you will likely experience more stalls on the way to your goal, with your goal weight being on the lower end of the healthy weight range. What type of exercise are you doing? If its fairly intense you may need to up your calories a little, I know that may feel counterintuitive but for some people it does break a stall. Are you still weighing an measuring your food and drinks with calories or just guestimating? If guessimating, time to get the measurement tools out again.

    Post VSG Hair Loss

I lost hair like that after childbirth, so I expect it in a couple of months from this surgery too. I shortened my hair and wore it in a messy topknot until the hair regrew. I’ve been watching some “topper” and wig videos on YouTube for more options. It’s just a few months, shorter than how fat I was.

    Revision in Mexico?

I am pre-op, but I am having my VSG in Mexico at HospitalBC on 9/21. There is a private FB page for Dr. Illan's patients, and many of them have gone to him for revisions (Dr. Jalil Illan, MD, FACS, FASMBS Weight Loss Surgery support group). Definitely suggest joining the FB group so you can get some first hand opinions! I did a good bit of research before deciding to go with Dr. Illan and have been extremely pleased with the process so far. Surgery in Mexico is absolutely a viable, safe option as long as you do your research and go with a reputable surgeon. Good luck on your revision, I hope you're able to find a surgeon your trust and can get it done!

    hair loss advice

go to the trichologist. or to an endocrinologist, unexpected hair loss is a cry for help from your body. there may be thyroid problems or anemia. also hormonal problems .. in short a lot of things so visit the doctor you can take biotin supplements in parallel, for example, and use hair products with biotin curtin, etc., but I'm not sure if they will help without treatment maybe the doctor will tell you to take a closer look at the multivitamin complex for hair (where there is iron, B vitamins, collagen, keratin)

    Frequency of meals

Well congrats to you on your weight loss and maintenance! According to my diet plan from my dr and nutritionist, I can have certain crackers and certain breads toasted. I love a good quarter of a tuna “sandwich” on a weekend. And skinless chicken wings in the air fryer, are also approved for me. 3 skinless wings have 19g protein and 5g fat according to my app I use for tracking. It’s not pure fat. It may have higher fat content than other proteins, but it’s not a forbidden item for my plan. I eat mostly halibut, salmon, and tuna which my husband catches in Hawaii or Alaska on his annual fishing trips. I’m well aware of high proteins, the amount of calories I burn working out, and what’s on my plan. If I want to have something on my approved list, then what’s the problem?
  20. Well, I'm 19 months out. According to my logbook I lost the most my first month. This is my entire weight loss log post surgery if you're curious (for reference, I lost 68 pounds prior to surgery. I also have more stalls then anyone I've ever seen on this site) : 1st Month= 23 pounds 2nd Month= 15 pounds 3rd Month= 17 pounds 4th Month= 10 pounds 5th Month= 9 pounds 6th Month= 10 pounds 7th Month= 6 pounds 8th Month= 9 pounds 9th Month= 5 pounds 10th Month= 7 pounds 11th Month= 6 pounds 12th Month= 4 pounds 13th Month= 4 pounds 14th Month= 3 pounds 15th Month= 4 pounds 16th Month= 4 pounds 17th Month= 1 pound 18th Month= 5 pounds 19 Month= 1 pound
  21. Unfortunately the heady weight loss rate of the first few weeks after surgery doesn’t last & your rate will slow over time. I lost about 5kg in the 2.5 weeks pre surgery diet. I lost about 9kg in the first month post surgery, another 9 the next two months (so18kg+/- in those first three months post surgery). Took another three months to lose the 9kg to my goal. (Just noticed the repeating 9kg losses over those time frames - freaky!) I lost another 11.5kg over the next year (months 6 to 18).

3 weeks po - how many steps?

You can only do as much as you can do because we heal & recover differently. In my third week, I went to my local shopping centre, walked about 800m & suddenly my blood pressure & blood sugar dropped. Had to sit down pretty darn quickly. But that was me. Others don’t have those issues. My advice would be to start slowly & build up your steps to see what you can do. You won’t be able to do what you were doing before surgery but you’ll be able to get back to that point pretty quickly. Don’t walk far from your home (up & down your street is good to begin) so in case you have a sudden drop in energy you’re close to home. Oh & take an electrolyte drink with you. I learnt that after my experience. Try some resistance bands to help build muscle in a more gentle way. Ensure you’re meeting your daily protein goal to offset your body going to your muscles for energy. But 4kg of muscle loss in three or so weeks does seem a lot. How much weight did you lose in that same period? Does the maths add up considering the weight you lost in that time frame would include water weight & fat as well & they would be the larger proportion of the loss.
  23. Sip, always have a liquid in eyesight and reach, sip, drink a variety of liquids, sip, ice chips or sugar-free ice pops, sip. If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated. Some people go to the extreme and set alarms to remind them to drink. I don't go to that extent. Some people have a favorite glass, bottle, mug, etc that encourages them to drink more. If your urine is really dark, you should see a doctor because there might be something else going on. Sometimes weight loss and a drastic reduction in calories can be dangerous for people with kidney disease.

    445 lb. Anyone else?

My highest recorded weight was 392 (in 2017). I was 389 when I started the program to have WLS and since my program required a 6 month monitored weight loss I lost 68 pounds during that time and was 321 on my surgery day. I'm currently 178 pounds. For reference... I had the Loop Duodenal Switch/SADI-S/SIPS surgery. It's a gastric sleeve stomach, just with the added intestinal bypass bit.

    Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass

Thank you for sharing your daughter's story. I was a normal weight until I started the meds for bipolar at age 14 and gained 100lb in 2 years. My PCP/GP (who works exclusively with patients who have a mental illness) actually recommended weight loss surgery for me. My psychopharmacologist also agrees it is the right move for me. I'm not expecting to go off my meds due to surgery, but I'd like to be more comfortable doing the thing I love like hiking and traveling. I have been in the hospital a number of times for bipolar disorder, so I don't think just losing weight or exercising will solve my problems. I am also (at 41) a bit old to start jogging.
