  2. Hello all, long time reader, first time poster. This has been a long road for me as it has been for most of us I am sure with the attempts to loose the same pounds many times over the years. I don't know how many times I have told myself that "I can do anything I put my mind to" and to some extend I have, since I have probably lost approximately 60-70lbs during a relatively short time period several times over the years. The problem is that my life would get busy, and the extreme measures that I was doing would fall by the wayside and my old habits would come back. I simply wasn't able to sustain the weight loss long enough for me to turn it into a sustainable habit. Finally I found myself last November at 5'9" and 381bs, the heaviest I have ever been, I finally decided to make a decision to pursue the investigation to determine if weight loss surgery was right for me. For my insurance, it required a 6 month time period where you needed to meet with a series of nutritionists to help learn about the surgery and to go through a series of trainings and a psychological exam, decided I needed to loose more weight around March to help make the surgery more safe. My original BMI was around 57, today's weight I am down to 316 so around the 46-47 range. Part of me says, hey, you have already 65 pounds, you can loose the additional 100 that you want to, but part of me understands that is unlikely and has matured and knows his limitations and what I am great at and what I need help at and this is one area that I am not ashamed that I think that I need help at to make sure that it sticks this time around. Especially since my wife and I had another addition to our family the prior year that had started me thinking about making a long term set of changes around my weight. Making the decision to choose weight loss surgery was not an easy one but I think that the reply to my mother when she asked the question if I thought I could lose the weight without surgery has summed up my reasoning . My reply was "I can do anything I put my mind to, but unfortunately after a time my mind wanders.". My hope is that this surgery will help me have the tools to keep the weight off during the times that my mind wanders or at least allow me to get to the point where the weight loss is significant amount that the new lifestyle becomes the new habits as I want to enjoy the rest of my children's childhoods as an physically active participant instead of only intellictually participant one. Sincerely, Arcyne
  3. My Name is Brianna, and I reside in SW FL with my family of five. I'm 17 and a junior, my current weight is 336lbs, My BMI (according to the weight over height calculator) is 54 and though I know and see myself as a fearfully and wonderfully made young woman who is everything and more in god's eyes, I know that I am unhealthy, and am aware that changes need to be made. I have never had the extreme "Yo-Yo" sydrome as many have had, I have tried dieting in the past, but they have not been successfull to the point that they should be. It is not eating healthy that I have an issue with, I enjoy good food that is good for me, but as with all things, too much of anything (even a good thing) is a bad thing. Quantity is my main problem. This is what led me to the lap band, I have been diligently researching and reading testimonials of other bandsters, and I realize that though my age is a bit of a hassle, the only way I could be able to get this surgery is if it was before my 18th birthday, I am on medicaid and it is rendereed null and void after said date. I absolutely want this lifestyle change, and full well do I realize it is going to be such, I am never going to eat like (or how much) I have before, and I am content with that, ecstatic even. I only hope and pray that I am givin this chance to start over, to take and hold precious what little I have of my adolescent life left, and use it to it's fullest. One major thing spurring me on is that in the spring of 2011, I plan upon taking a week in paris, and with the average of 13.5 miles of walking on a trip to be done, my current weight does not make that prospect a good one. Onto doctor matters. If all goes as it should, Dr. Renkhe of Palms of Pasadina in St. Petersburg FL. He has been the surgeon to both my mother and my aunts Gastric Bypass surgery. He is now (to my belief) exclusive in band surgeries, and though I have met him only a handfull of times, I trust the man with my life. If anyone else on here has had him as a surgeon I would greatly appreciate any insight onto him and his banding schedule/regimine Pre and Post Op. As of now I am working on my diet because I know that insurance requires such, to know wether or not you are able to do such, or whatever. My goal weight in the end is going to be around 150 to 160. Other than that, HI!

    Introduction

Thank you for your suggestion. I have had a port-a-cath placement in the past for access since I have had a lifetime of renal lithiasis (kidney stones) and many surgeries. I drink a lot always. The port was removed because they were unable to keep it working, in fact, it really only worked for one procedure. The last time I had surgery (just a few weeks ago) the anesthesiologist was using the doppler and I am not joking here, it took him over an hour to get in (with the jugular the final outcome after lots of sticks). Of course, it was done with no sedation so was probably more traumatic than it needed to be but I am used to the sticks and they don't bother me much except I am not crazy about jugular and the length of the tubing they put in there was impressive I have to say. I do hope I can lose as much weight this time and keep it off for good. I also believe that the kidney stones were less frequent when I was thinner. The problem is I am now unable to take my stone inhibitor (potassium citrate) because my potassium level is too high. I do have palpitations and two leaking valves (aortic and tri-cuspid), though they are mild leaks. I pray this is the right thing for me and do worry. I also could kick myself because of all the weight I did lose and gained back. I know what I have to do to get there and wish I hadn't let that all go. Anyway, there is no sense crying over spilled milk so onward we go. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

    Weight Loss

From a similar thread... 1. The first 6 weeks are for healing. You cannot expect to lose weight for the next 6 weeks, and if you do count yourself lucky. Stay off the scale. 2. The scale isn't your only measure of success. Take your body measurements. Are you feeling better about yourself? Those all count as well.
  7. Hello to all; After years of being grossly overweight and going on diet after diet and losing weight only to gain it plus 15 pounds backs within the next 6 months or so, I decided to go the route of the lap-band. I was banded on 9/14 and am now 9 days into re-learning how to take care of my health. For some reason, they didn't weigh me before surgery on the 14th, but my initial visit with them was on August 14thish, and at my follow up two days ago, I had already lost 48 pounds. I am sure I will have questions as I get accustommed and hope I can count on some help from the experienced ones here. Happy Sunday. dab
  8. For me, part of the reason I ate when I wasn't physically hungry was that I felt because I'm already overweight, I might as well eat when the urge hit me. I'm only three weeks into to this (two weeks pre-op diet and one week post-op), but not only have I not eaten outside of the required diet, I've not wanted to. I finally feel like I can lose this extra weight once and for all, and, more importantly, keep it off. That's always been my biggest dilemma; keeping the lost weight off. So, while I don't know for sure what my future holds, this ability to feel full on very little food and then to stay full, plus the confidence that I can keep these lost pounds off, is keeping me honest.

    First day after surgery

Congratulations !! Stay off the scale. Wait until your post op appointment to weigh. The reason is that most of us gain right after surgery from fluids and swelling. Also, walk a lot. It will help everything. Stay connected here and if anything feels worse rather than better day by day, call your doc right away.
  10. Knock on Wood.... I used to get sick all the time, seemed every time I turned around something would bother me....I started to also feel as though I was allergic to just about everything.... I have to say, since loosing weight, exercising more and eating only the best foods, I have not been the slightest bit sick in almost 3 years now.... Just an observation..... I do get my Flu Shot every year...I'm also not stupid...I am around and handling some really sick kids, many from not the nicest environments, all day long, exposed to all kinds of body fluids, and other things.... People ask me why am I wearing scrubs all day...it is because that 7 year old boy just vomited all over me !!!!

    Discouraged

Hi Texas, I'm sorry that you're not losing. I am sure it's very frustrating. Your ticker says 52 lbs, so you should be proud of that loss!!! When you were unfilled, is it because you had stuck episodes or another reason? Since I don't want to barrage you with questions, here are some things that my nutritionist/doc told me would be key to losing weight: 1. Take in at least 60-70 grams of Protein per day 2. Drink 64 -96 ounces of Water every day 3. Exercise (not mandatory, but if you can get in a 15 or 20 minute walk per day, it counts) 4. Calorie intake (you may get a few different responses on this)-- 800 to 1000 calories per day. Try to be INconsistent so your body doesn't go into starvation mode. Keep it guessing and trick the metabolism 5. If you are hungry in between meals, choose a healthy snack with protein (i.e. light cheese stick or apple with reduced fat peanut butter) 6. No grazing. If you feel legitimately hungry, again #5. 7. Listen to your body and try to figure out head hunger v. real hunger I hope some of this helps you. I am sure other posters will have great advice too, but everything above has really worked for me. CONGRATS on your 52 lbs lost! It's an accomplishment and something to be proud of!

    Jeans that fit

I don't know what size you are but if you are a 12 or above I suggest the jeans at torrid. They have a decent stretch to them so you can buy a size that fits your legs and butt and they will still stretch around your tummy. I have always had slimmer legs, no butt and have carried my weight in my stomach so these have been my go to jeans for years. They are a little pricey but the often have but 1 get one 50% off sales and coupons you can find online.

    Insurance Approved but Dr. Denied

I am having my band out, just waiting the the approval. I suggested they do the RNY at the same time. The surgical nurse said insurance company wouldn't allow the dual surgery and I would have to go through 3 months of weight management with PCP, another psychology test (which I had done today. I am lucky my psychologist is the one that got me in with my new doctor and is the psychologist for that practice.) then the bypass. Hopefully I don't have to get the approval from the clinic's board. I am already upset because the band has to come out (I am one of the patients that never had an issue, even though it has now slipped. In fact I lost 4 pounds since I seen my new doctor three weeks ago). So really will be upset if I couldn't get the approval of the board if it would come down to that. I am afraid that since this clinic didn't do my band, and I am new to them, they could deny me because of age as their cut off is 72 and I'll be 71. My heart goes out to all of you and the hoops that we all seem to have to go through just to better ourselves, become healthier and it takes just one person who says you didn't do what you should have done before, so you probably won't do it this time either so I can't approve another surgery. All we can do is hang in there and wish for the best.

    Attended the seminar last night

Congratulations on taking the first step!!! It does lend a sense of reality to it all! Losing weight, and even plateaus take on new meaning when the weight does not come back! The reigning in of the hunger monster was the epitome of success to me. I too could get very emotional over it! I wish they had a support group where I live, but they don't the closest is held monthly and is almost 200 miles away. In the summer months I may try to attend a meeting, but with winter weather here to stay awhile, I won't even try. We are glad you are joining us here at LBT---if you have any questions, feel free to ask away. This is an awesome place for support! Kat
  15. I've been reading a lot about food addiction, and I'm trying to honestly assess myself. I have a huge passion for good food, but I don't eat a lot of junk or processed food. I haven't eaten fast food in probably 2 years. My husband has a candy habit, but I don't eat much of it. I love to cook, but my cooking style tends to be more Mediterranean than homestyle. I'm not much of a baker, so I don't make cakes or Cookies very often. When I get stressed or upset, I tend to cook and eat less than when I'm feeling good. I can get a little obsessive over food, but it tends to be more about individual ingredients. For instance, I'm always looking for new olive oils to try, and over the last few months I've probably bought a dozen types of sea salt. I have 2 lbs of French green lentils in the pantry that I'm excited to try. I'm looking forward to figuring out ways to up the Protein in everything I make post-op. Of course, I didn't get to this weight without over-enjoying a whole lot of great food. In my case, bad knee issues made it very hard to exercise, which just exacerbated the weight gain. But, I know I think about food a lot. I read cookbooks, watch a lot of cooking shows, and search out food blogs. I know that I will face head hunger and the challenges of all the life changes post-op. But how do you tell the difference between food passion and food addiction?
  16. First of all I do not regret having my LAP-BAND®® procedure. I have had to learn how to eat slowly and not drink anything while I am eating. It took a while for my LAP-BAND®® to be corrected to the just right point. I have learned you have to diet still with the LAP-BAND®®, just eating small amounts will not help you lose weight. You have to eat smart and drink low fat drink. Crytal Light in my personal favorite. I add Benefiber smooth to my crytal light for the fiber I need each day. I am able to eat more in the afternoon than in the morning. And for some odd reason I can't eat eggs anymore. For me the eggs are a mistery because I love eggs any way you fix them, however since my surgery I can not keep eggs down. After talking to other who have had the surgery some can't eat chicken, salad, greens, etc....seems that this is common, however each person has it's own food they are unable to keep down.

    Gallbladder surgery

I had mine out 8 months after my VSG. I continued to lose weight steadily after surgery. If you stay on plan, you should be fine.

    New-Banded June 10th

I was banded on the 9th. Things are going well although I admit to craving my families dinner and having to stop myself from taking a bite. I have very little pain, just a little soreness. Today I walked 2 miles. It felt good. I am determined to lose this weight and keep it off for good. But I realize it's a marathon and not a sprint. I have a friend who had the gastric sleeve procedure in April, she has already lost 60 LBS. She has a lot of difficulty eating and some dumping syndrome. So the slow pace of the band is obviously better on our bodies. Good Luck! Rhonda url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/weight-loss/woap9q6/] [/url]

    Does Size Count?

Very interesting! I like the smaller portion option. Even before surgery I thought all restaurants served portions that were way too big. Now I try to order off of the kids menu. I have asked for smaller portions at some restaurants and have been turned down. As far as posting the nutritional information, I don't see how that will help. A lot of people are not informed enough to know what the information means. And if they don't know what it means, how can they use the information to make an informed decision on their choice of foods? Thank u for sharing! surgeversary 7/24/12, highest weight 267, surgery weight 262, current weight 216

    Almost time T- 2 hours

I've always felt like I was a big guy but "not that big" I mean I can take pictures and Selfies and if I do the right pose, stand a certain way, I look in the picture, to me, like how I think I look. which is a big guy that "not that big". But every once in a while, I will be in a store, say a gas station and I'm waiting in line to pay. I happen to look up at the security monitor and I see this huge guy that is bigger than everyone else around him and I'm like "wow, now that is a big guy" then I start to look for me in that monitor to realize that the person I was looking at was me. I have surveillance cameras at my front door at home. I still remember when I first set those camera's up, I had them set to where I would get an sms message when the motion detector triggers. so I leave my house one day and about 5 minutes later I get the SMS message saying that my motion detector triggered. I pulled over and grabbed my ipad and logged into my system to see what triggered my motion sensor and I see this huge guy walk out my place. my heart started beating real fast for a second till I realized that it was me. now I don't even look at the recordings anymore because I get that feeling every time I see me coming or going in those cameras. I imagine I will probably have the opposite issue once Ive had surgery and have lost weight, where I will really be "not a big guy" but still see a big guy in pictures and in the mirror etc

    Clothing!

Hand me downs have been great. Funnily I've scored some items back they I'd previously grown out of. Borrowing items for special occasions works as well. Other thing I found was investing in some new basics, stretchy black skirts and pants were a staple, plus a jacket. I found I could wear these bits and pieces to work and out casually. Wrap dresses are also great for weight loss, they tie so you can get fair wear out of them over a few different dress sizes. I also found skirts and dresses more forgiving than pants as your losing weight. I've not spent much on jeans, simple Levi's have been suffice. Oh and new bras, that was the first thing to replace. I've bought two staple black and beige bras, that are strapless and convertible.
