    How long until....

It gets easier. It does. You were just banded and it takes time. I am almost 4 weeks postop and been out of "bandster hell" for almost 1 1/2 now and since then my life has returned to almost "normal". Well, since I am seeing the weight start to drop off I know that this "thing" was the right decision. Your time will come to realize that to. Best of luck

    How long until....

You just got the band and I think it's completely normal to go thru this. It is a definate change and that is overwhelming in itself. You got this done for a reason and right now you might be uncomfortable and not rationalizing it completely. Try to relax, breathe, do some light yoga. In this moment you have it in and there is no reason to turn back after coming this far. Give it a chance. I sometimes think why did I get this band- what was wrong with me why I could never lose the weight. Why couldn't I just eat vegetables all the time to fill my hunger? Well - it is not easy for some people to lose weight. And I still never want to eat my veggies!!! I can honestly say without this band I might have gained 35 lbs instead of lost it!

    Large boned. ..

"Large-boned" is the oldest excuse for being fat. Large bones are the exception. Most people are "medium-boned," for lack of a better term. Your family has its collective head in the sand. Ignore them and don't you apply adjectives to yourself either. Make losing weight your goal. When you get to that place that you really want to go, you'll walk in the sun... You'll know you've arrived.
  4. Thanks for the advice! He is a bigger guy but he is 6'4" and 250 he has a bit of a tummy but the way he eats is literally atrocious to me now. Greasy big burgers, whole pizzas, ranch. Ranch on everything. It's hard for me to sit down at a dinner with him. The smell makes me feel sick. But we have made improvement, since this post he on his own accord wanted to try a life in my shoes he has gained since then more respect and less snide comments regarding my life style change.
  5. KayVon, My hubby has voiced the same fears. Though he is a tall, handsome, THIN beast....he still worries that I'll "find someone better." Really? Makes no sense to me. He loves that I've dropped weight and am still dropping but he still worries that the "new me" won't like the "old him" anymore. It's a typical worry of our partners, I think. Now if you're with someone who has his OWN weight issues...and he's doing nothing about it...then it's truly a VALID worry. You can't have people around you who are not supportive or being self-destructive (at least I couldn't).

    Weight loss haulted!

You listed the reasons you may not be losing weight, so focus on those. Get more activity. Drink more water. Eat more protein. I eat 1200 calories a day, so I don't necessarily agree with Grady on the 600-800 calories a day, but I also don't remember how much I ate at 6 months post op, so maybe that's about right. But, regardless, focus on getting your protein, water, and activity up. At over 1 year post-op, I still supplement with a protein shake or Quest protein chips every day; if I didn't, I wouldn't get enough.

    Pre And Post Sleeve Differences?

I think men lose more than women because of the different biological makeup. Women, by nature, are more prone to holding on to weight because of their child bearing capacity. Lactose intolerant? No. Spicy foods? Absolutely! Chili and salsa go down better than most things. I have trouble eating eggs and most meats, including hamburger. I think it is because of the density of these things. I can get them down, and still enjoy the taste, but I fill up very quickly when eating them and that sometimes lead to a feeling of overstuffed and mild pain for 15 minutes or so. . As for things I liked before, but don't like now, the only thing that fell into that category was a certain brand of fruit shakes that I could hardly stomach after surgery. I gave my oversupply away. For that reason, don't stock up more than a week or so supply before surgery because you may find out you don't like it after. I watch carbs closely, keeping in mind that some carbs are necessary especially if you exercise heavily. I hold to less than 70 carbs per day and burn about 430 calories in exercise (treadmill). I know if I overdue the carbs, I will not lose weight. This surgery was the best decision I ever made and I would do it again, despite the minor changes it has brought in my diet.

    How was goal weight determined?

My doctor uses a scale that identifies body fat, body water, lean muscle/bone density and determined that I could be healthy at 230. My fat free weight was 180, and based on that, I could weigh 230 and have a healthy amount of body fat.

    How was goal weight determined?

I was being realistic. I'm close to 50, so I didn't want to get too low. I just decided on the high end of BMI for my height. Then I wanted a buffer, so I kept going and lost another 9 or 10. My OCD kicked in, and I thought why not go for the even 100 pound loss and lose 5 or 6 more pounds to get to 135, and my body said NOPE. I've been maintaining between 140-143 for about 3 months now without doing anything much differently. Apparently my body likes where I'm at, and that's okay. I like where I'm at, too Keep in mind, as you can see, your goal weight may change the closer you get or even once you get there. You kind of start doing the proverbial "how low can I go?" game. But my body ended up telling me.

Ready to give up..not much weight loss

Suzanne G.- It sounds like you have a 10cc band. Some people have a 4cc band and small fills are routine for most docs. I have reached goal and never had more than 1.2cc in my band. So fill level is very individual. Allamess- I know you are frustrated, but one should generally expect a 1-2 pound weight loss per week and it seems that you are still within that category. Search the board for the "slow-losers". They may have some good suggestions and support for you. I also agree with others that you should continue to log calories, drink plenty of water and exercise. I am glad you are meeting with a dietician to get suggestions. I am not a diabetic not a doctor, but please be careful adjusting your own insulin and Glucophage doses. This is a marathon, not a sprint. You will get there! The goal is HEALTH. Best of HEALTH to you!

    ?

The weight fluctuations are a greater risk for heart attack. Dropping weight rapidly can be ok if you maintain it because your heart figures out how to accommodate your smaller size and the muscle doesn't have to work as hard. It's the fat/skinny cycle we ask our hearts to accommodate that is the true problem.

    Newbie in Dallas, TX

Wow Heather that is great!!! My paperwork was submitted yesterday for approval so now I am just gonna sit back and see what happens. How do you feel? Are you hungry? Did you have it done at a hospital or at a weight loss center? What did you have to do to get your insurance to approve you? Good Luck Nikia

My VSG surgery is approaching fast

I'm scheduled for VSG with Dr. Fernando Garcia, on October 18th, 2013 nerves are really getting the best of me. I'm so anxious, scared, and just feeling uneasy. I know I need this tool; because I have lost and gain weight over and over, but I haven't figured out how to keep it off. Currently, I have asthma, Hypertension (I developed PIH) during my last pregnancy and it decided to stay with me, Of course; on top of that I'm obese. I pray for longevity I want to raise my daughter, see her graduate high school and college, get married and have kids. Today, I noticed I was breathing so hard and I couldn't believe how exhausted I got trying to shop for clothes for my brother in laws' funeral. As scared as I am, I know this is the tool of choice for me; I have to lose this weight before I develop more comorbidities from being obese. I'm also going alone; because I don't really have a support person. People tend to judge and feel that you should just be able to lose the weight. If it was that easy; I wouldn't be fat in the first place. The time is gonna fly by.

    Calories? ?

My weight loss stopped several months ago. I started to gain this month. I've recently gone back to 1200 calories a day, which is what I was eating while losing. It's starting to come off again. Not easy. I was used to bigger and higher carb meals. But I want to get to goal, so it is what it is.
  18. Thebanded girl...thank you for your input. I did check out that website...what a fun blog! I wish you continued success with your weight loss.

When do you feel/begin a new normal?

I'm wondering at what point do you feel normal? I understand you feel different in the sense of eating, but when do you feel you have enough energy? I didn't start feeling normal with energy levels at least for the first two months. I didn't even gain back enough stamina for my workouts until around 4-5 months post op. Don't worry though, it does happen. It is really really worth it. I feel completely 100% normal today. The only time I am reminded I have a sleeve is when I post here or if I eat too much or too fast. When do you stop worrying about hurting your stomach? Never! You never want to fill your stomach too much, but you can generally expect that you should be completely healed around 2 months out. When do you simply eat and drink without thinking it through so much? At almost 9 months out I can really drink much faster than I did at only about 1 month out. But I still can't guzzle like I did pre surgery. I still need to keep close attention to my full signal because pushing even one bite too much can leave me feeling miserable. Is there a day where you dont' think about the surgery and what you've done and just live and enjoy the day? Why can't you do both? I think about my surgery daily because I have to every time I eat or drink - yet I do still live and enjoy my day! For those of you who had the surgery done 1 or more years ago, why do you still come to the forum? Is it because you still need support or is it because you simply want to help others? If you still need the support, why? What is it? Well I'm close to one year out, but I'll tell you why I still come here. Simply because the awesome folks here were there for me when I needed answers and now it's my turn. I owe it to this great community. I still get amazing advice to this day! There will always be someone here who is further out than me and can help me out with questions. I don't think I'm having many issues per se, but this is a lifetime decision. Our sleeves will be wtih us until we pass away, so it's nice to have a place like this to come back to whenever. I guess I'm hoping after surgery I could just move onto my new normal life. You will!!!!!!! Thanks so much!
  20. I found out today that the military hospital in South Korea doesn't do lap-band only bypass. :crying: I am disappointed but not devastated. I'm going to keep trying on my own to loose the weight while we are here and if nothing happens get it when we move again. So hopefully I'll either by slimmer or joining you all in two years.

    Half way pic!

Ok, so I found some pics on my mom's phone that were close to my high weight, maybe 15lbs off. I feel crazy that I don't see much change. Body dysmorphia makes this whole thing extra fun, lol. And I totally agree that I should have taken more pics before surgery. I regret that now, although I know why I didn't at the time. It was hard to hand my phone to my mom to take the pic today, let alone 75lbs ago! To anyone just kicking off this adventure, take those pics! Even if you have someone else take them, and not look at them until later. I wish that hunk in the pic was mine! But, alas, this was a meet and greet at a comedy show :-) I did get my boobs signed though! Lol

    Half way pic!

"Body dysmorphia”, is that a real thing? If not it should be. You must be model height. I'm an 18 at your current weight. I'm 5'6".

    Half way pic!

Ok, so I don't have any before pics at my highest weight (I refused!), but here is 75 down, size 14/16. HW 315, CW 239, sleeved 9/2/14.
  24. Infected ports. Lost ports. Slipped bands. Funky tubing. I know that with the band growing more popular, the number of complications will rise in relation to the increased number of bands out there. But just scanning through the boards tonight, I'm surprised by the number of port and other problems people have had or are having. Isn't the complication rate about 1 percent of all patients? Maybe it just seems higher to me because I had a slipped band (since corrected in a second surgery) and am on-guard for problems. It's just scary how many people (myself included) have gone to such great lengths to obtain the band only to be left with lots of bills...and short of weight loss goals. Has anyone seen any good data from Inamed recently on complications? When I called about a year ago after my band slipped, they said they were required to report any complications to the food & Drug Administration (FDA). Anyway -- to end on a lighter and more positive note: I continue to be amazed by the great wisdom, strength and courage of everyone at LBT. And there's not another group out there that can top this crowd's sense of humor!!! Elizabeth
  25. Hi fellow bandsters--Patunia ---Keep the faith!!!! I was banded June 23rd 2008 and only lost 6 lbs. I kept asking how much was in my band as I had had 4 fills since my surgery. I thought I was up to 5.5. I went in last Wed. for another fill and this time the actual surgeon was in there to give me the fill. He withdrew the fill and then left the room (it took him 3 false poked with a big needle--he was terrible). When he came back he put in 1cc. I knew it was too much and I said it felt too tight. He said that I just wasn't used to any restriction. I went back the next day for a small unfill. The new nurse (I love her) said the doctor had said my original fill was only at 3 cc. and what should he do?? My old fill nurse was fired--maybe because she didn't put enough in. My new nurse was great--she did the slight unfill and was totally reassuring. I said I felt like I had done something wrong because I had only lost 6 lbs and she said it WASN'T my fault.. I think she felt bad that I had gone 4 months basically without enough restriction and only lost 6 lbs and totally blamed myself. Since Thurs. (4 days) I have lost 4 abs. I am still a little tight as I can only eat liquids but it is better than being able to eat a lot and not lose weight. You just need to get the right restriction. You will get there!!!!
