I don't think I did much of anything the first 6 weeks, but I ate the protein and veggie my spouse ate (usually restaurant take out) except I had a much smaller portion and it was pureed. Everyone else were asked to stay away during this period to allow me to rest and heal. After that I resumed family cooking which consisted of me, my spouse, my mom, and any grown kids that showed up to eat which was frequent. I was a plan nazi for the first 18 or so months which means I followed my plan to a tee. I never cooked two meals. I ate the same protein and same vegetable as I prepared for everyone. I abstained from anything else such as pasta or other side dishes and deserts (which we rarely did anyhow). After the 18 or so months nothing really changed except my plan had become my new normal so I didn't even have to think about food choices or volume, it all just happened. Except on occasion I took a bite of the pasta or side dishes if I did particularly well. Nothing much has changed over the remaining 18 or so years, except it's down to me and my spouse, everyone else has either moved away or moved on. My plan is still the same, our routine is still the same. Good luck, Tek

I'm about 16 months out and I never make 2 meals. That wasn't the case when I was immediately post-op and could only eat mush, of course, but after about 8 weeks when I had been cleared for a "normal" diet, things were pretty status quo. If I make pasta, I use Banza and then serve myself more meat/sauce/veggies and very little pasta (if any at all). If I make burgers, I eat them on lettuce. If I make a casserole, I might eat it as-is, depending on what's in it, or I might just pull out a scoop of the meat/veggies and forgo the carb addition. If I make a pot roast, I might have a portion of the meat and a small salad and skip the potatoes. All in all, its pretty normal for us. I adjust for myself as needed, but its very minimal. Only you can decide what the right approach is for your family. But if they currently live off of nachos and ice cream, something will absolutely have to change for you to be successful. And if you are the primary cook for the family, it may fall to you to make those changes. Or, you'll be faced with making 2 meals, which is really impractical (and may very well lead to resentment).

after you wake up from surgery
The Greater Fool replied to Nina35's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I woke up to someone calling my name and telling me to wake up. This happened about three times but finally I stayed awake. My first words were "I've changed my mind." The nurse replied with an exaggerated "oops." When they were happy that I was mostly alive and mostly well I got wheeled to my room, which I slept through. Sleep is good. Good luck, Tek -
How long did you wait before going back to work
catwoman7 replied to Yahoo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a desk job (retired now) and took three weeks off. If necessary, I could have gone back after two - but I appreciated that third week to sleep and get used to the food progression. -
I don't understand why you are devastated when you lost 25 lbs in 6 weeks, especially at a lower weight start than most. That's a great start, even faster than some who had a virgin rny. Too high expectations can and will defeat all your hard work if it gets to you. Perhaps seek therapy if you truly feel "devastated". I know depression can sometimes occur after WLS. I had a revision just to get rid of the gerd. Even if I never lost a pound, to end the horrible acid reflux and sleepless nights are 100% worth it to me.

Doing weird things in the middle of the night?
Bettyboop56 replied to KishaG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take 100mg of Trazadone about 2 times a week for insomnia. No issues. -
after you wake up from surgery
Bettyboop56 replied to Nina35's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ditto above. I took oxygen and muscle cramp meds every 4 hours for 4 days. Day 4 I didn't need anything ...and nothing from that point. Had an issue in bumping my belly, invision locations, against table for next few weeks. Lol. Fairly mild gas pains. Easy peezy. Patience. -
How long did you wait before going back to work
Jeanniebug replied to Yahoo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have a desk job and I work from home. I took 3 weeks off, but I wish I would have taken longer. I had (still have) quite a bit of diaphragm pain and discomfort. It was a couple of months before I could comfortably sit up straight for any length of time. But, I'm diabetic and a slow healer. All the nerves and muscles are just taking their sweet time to heal. I also have a small hiatal hernia that they didn't see during my EGD or surgery - so this seems to be a new development. I think that may be causing my pain, but I'm not sure. -
after you wake up from surgery
Smanky replied to Nina35's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had three big surgeries and one endoscopy under general, and with the exception of the first back in 2001 (knee reconstruction), I just wake up in recovery feeling dopey but ok. I woke up after my bypass in considerable pain, but I had had a surprise hiatal hernia repair as well as my bypass, so I really felt like I'd been hit by a truck. The nurse asked if I was in pain and gave me some morphine. I was then wheeled back to my room. It's all very hazy as they're very intense drugs. Just let the nurses know your pain levels and you'll be fine. Well... sore but fine. -
the two week thing is the infamous "three week stall". Almost everyone experiences it. Here are the 17,501 posts on it on this site (and no, I am NOT kidding): https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=three week stall weird color poop isn't uncommon the first month or two after surgery. I think paleness usually indicates fat malabsorption, which isn't a huge surprise. I think mine was normal colored after about the first month. as for the pain thing, I'd run that by your clinic. I'm not sure what that is- could be a lot of things, I think. They might want to do a scope or something to see what's going on.

Yes! I'm also feeling the cold 14 months out from my sleeve. I need three layers minimum inside now if I'm sitting doing nothing. I really hope it isn't permanent.

When does it get better?
NotSoSkinnyMini replied to NotSoSkinnyMini's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi and thank you for the reply. My team just brushes me off and tells me to go to the emergency room if I think I need to be seen or get fluids. I went on 1/4 and it was an 8 hour wait… When I was about 10 weeks post op I could do Fairlife milk and yougurt for several weeks. Then all of a sudden I would get sick after eating or drinking anything dairy. I tried the Fairlife milk a few weeks ago and with just 1/4 cup dumped. I will try normal 2 percent milk today. It’s just super hard when I take one bite of something or one drink and a minute later feel like I’m dumping. -
Psych Eval Format
liveaboard15 replied to BypassTheBS's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeons office refused to let me find my own for the eval. They gave me a list of approved ones that i can choose from. it was a 2 visit deal 1st visit was online on zoom where she discussed the surgery and asked about my eating habits and daily life. Then a week later i had to go in and take a 600-700 question test on a computer. Most of those questions were the same but worded different. -
I'm cutting down less and less caffeine every week. I don't want the caffeine withdraw headaches if I go cold turkey at the time of surgery. I do green tea during the week and one cup of my favorite coffee on weekends.

My surgeon suggested weight training after 8 weeks, however you have to listen to your body. I had surgery 9 weeks ago and lifting a carry on still causes pain in my bigger incision and sometimes depending on the activity feel a slight numbness there.

Once you get to week 2 you can add some pureed items and soft cheeses. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Was cleared at 6 weeks for light weights/higher reps. At 9 weeks starting adding more weight/lower reps but no where near my pre-surgery lifts yet. I can tell I lost some muscle mass/strenght probaly due to the couple of months of inactivity. Still concentrating on cardio and low wgt/higher reps for awhile. Just trying to maintain for now and hopefully in a couple of months start working on increasing strength again. Surgeon gave clearance for everything including ab work. I think the greatest benefit from getting back in the gym is the postive impact on my mental state (Love those Endorphins!). But with the always caveat, check with your surgeon for advice tailored for you. Luckily, my Doc was very supportative of my gym return.

Stalls suck but staying consistent will always break them! This is your first, but it also wont be your last. Don't let them discourage you 😊

Hi. At 4 weeks post surgery, I was cleared with no restrictions to go back to strength training. I had been training for the past months leading up to surgery, so that may have had something to do with it. However, Dr was very clear about easing back into it and not starting where I left off. First session, I was exhausted and couldn't complete my 1 hours session...even doing light weights. So, once cleared, pace yourself and listen to your body! someone at your clinic will probably let you know before you're discharged from the hospital (or maybe even before you have the surgery) - but in my case, all I was supposed to do for the first four weeks was walk (and they really encouraged that). At the four week mark, I was cleared to do everything EXCEPT strength training. I had to wait eight weeks, I think, to go back to that.

Hello all! For the sleeves who have been healed for a while, if you are a tanner like me, how long did you have to wait to go tanning after surgery? I usually tan 1-2 times a week during the warm months, but I'm not sure how long to wait? I

First of all, i want to thank you for all the support and encouragement you've given to us, newbies. I’m getting my surgery in 2 weeks and i have some questions about strenght training. How long after the surgery did u go back to the gym? I used to be a hard lifter, legday was my favourite day(especially deadlifts, hacksquats) and im kinda scared i wont be able to do this anymore. So how should i start? light weights at the beginning? It’s still ok to do cardio after the workout ? Help 🥺

It is generally recommended to wait at least six weeks after gastric balloon placement before going on a rollercoaster or engaging in other high-intensity activities. This is because the balloon can cause some discomfort and inflammation in the stomach during the first few weeks after it is placed, and engaging in activities that involve rapid movements or changes in pressure can exacerbate this discomfort. It's important to check with your surgeon or healthcare provider for specific recommendations on when it is safe for you to go on a rollercoaster or participate in other high-intensity activities. They may advise you to wait longer than six weeks, especially if you had any complications during or after the procedure.

I try to eat three meals a day that are healthy and keep myself to one serving of carbs a day - if I have a bagel thin for breakfast - with almond butter - that is it for the day. Or save it for half a baked potato with dinner - I eat pretty simple proteins like grilled fish or chicken with grilled vegetables and some fruit. I do tuna salad (with mashed avacado) instead of mayo - For work lunches.
