6month post op update... Eating horribly
James Marusek replied to tigraq08's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Stick to whole food options for snacks; such as nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, raw veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouch. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. Avoid processed sugar. -
Hi everyone, I've been on this site for about six months now, but I've never interacted much. Having said that, every one of you have greatly helping me in making a decision about surgery. Original bypass was scheduled for June 21, but due to unforeseen circumstances, postponed until July 12th. Was really having second thoughts, simply because of all of the negativity from family and friends. I've finally decided to do what's right for me, after many late nights of watching videos and reading all of your stories. I start my pre-op on Wednesday, so I stocked up on yogurt, sugar free Jello, Premier protein drinks, and unflavored protein powder. So, any ideas what I can do with the unflavored powder? I added it to water, with a few drops of Mio, and it coagulated, forming a type of chewing gum! [emoji33][emoji33] Was actually kind of disturbing. So I need some ideas on how to use this powder... Any suggestions? Thanks everyone, for being my support system, without even realize you were doing it [emoji16] Sent from my LGL64VL using BariatricPal mobile app

Why is this so hard?!?
mewoobie replied to Shesacleverone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you on clear liquids or full liquids? I was only on clear liquids for a couple of days and then on full liquids (protein shakes, thin milk-based soups with no chunks, yogurt thinned w/milk, V-8 juce) for two weeks. I really liked tomato soup w/milk at this stage. -
Ambergene...I am on week 5 I've lost 23lbs...this is what I am eating now... In the morning I start out hydrating and take my bariatric vitamins...after about 30 minutes I usually eat one scambled egg w/ cheese or I have 1/3 cup cottage cheese or Greek yogurt. I continue to hydrate with water or protein shake or jello or sf popcicles. At lunch I have tuna mixed with mayo or 3 oz chicken or fish. Continue hydrating...Dinner I have yogurt or chicken or fish or cottage cheese. Hope this was helpful

Hello! You and I have the same surgery date, June 27th. I am on one week of pre-surgery diet and I would have to say it's got easier now. I am no longer hungry, just tired and I feel weak. I am doing three premier protein shakes a day, broth (yuck) and 1 greek yogurt. The one day I was really hungry last week I fell asleep and dreamed that I was in a buffet line on a cruise ship (taking a cruise in November). I could actually smell the bacon, or so I thought. I cried when I woke up. Then I had my shake and I was fine. We can do it! I hear that this is the hardest part so hang in there. So I suffer from chronic migraines and was told that I could take 4 Tylenol at a time for one of them. I did do that when I had my hunger headache last week and that helped and it never came back. Ask your Dr. if this is something you can do. You don't want to do it everyday.

Pre-Op Liquid Diet ...hitting a wall. Any words of encouragement/ experience or suggestions?
travelergirl replied to jane2017's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I added pb2 to either chocolate or vanilla protein shakes. Also peppermint. Another option I liked was cinnamon. I didn't care for broth either so I just bought soups and strained them for their broth. I never found a good yogurt. I was allowed SF pudding. I also bought some of the protein drinks you can buy on some websites. My favorites were the cran grape and the pink lemonade. Adding ice to some if the shakes and blending them gave me some small chunks I could chew on [emoji3] Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app -
I stumbled upon this recipe for a protein packed overnight oats recipe that I've been eating almost every day and I'm loving it, maybe someone else will like it. Before bed I mix a container of greek yogurt (12g protein) and a scoop of protein powder (the brand I use is 20g per scoop). Once it is smooth I mix in 1/4 cup of milk (4g protein) and a packet of high protein instant oatmeal (10g protein). I put a handful of frozen berries on top and put it in the fridge until morning. When I'm ready to eat I mix it all up and it's very good. The total protein ends up being 46g. It's more than I can eat in one sitting but I usually eat it for breakfast and lunch and if any is left as a snack later. My favorite flavor combo so far has been raspberry yogurt with a scoop of chocolate powder and frozen raspberries.

Now that I have been home it's better. I have been having an issue with protein shakes though and that was scary. We haven't determined if I have an issue with whey or lactose but either way I have tried multiple brands, multiple types of protein, different ways to prepare it I.e blended, milk, water and after literally the first drink hits my stomach I'm doubled over in pain. I didn't take a single pain pill since the day before I left the hospital, I have been good not even really sore, but my husband finally convinced me to take one Friday because I was doubled over in pain crying, and sweating with chills. My first thought was am I dumping off a zero fat zero sugar protein shake? Then my next thought was do I have a structure or blockage? But I literally can drink everything else, eat yogurt, and creamed soups. After Talking with the dr they took me off protein shakes and told me to attempt to advance my diet a few days early. So since Friday I have been on blended/mashed foods and it's going well! Eggs never tasted so good ha ha! I mean I still have a little bit of the "what the hell did I do?" But I think as I can get in a more normal routine especially with my family and meals it will make all the difference. It's a good motivator though that I have lost 17lbs since the Friday before my surgery! Tomorrow is 2 weeks. I know that it's most drastic at first and thats fine but it's just amazing to me. I also have a good friend that had the surgery about 6 years ago and she has done amazing things! She motivated me for sure. -
Hello Everyone. My name is Chasity. This year has been 7 years since I had my band placed. This worked great and approx 5 years into the process I had completely changed my life. I was down 130 pounds and at the lowest weight I had seen since high school. I had energy I long ago forgot I had. This was great and this energy greatly improved my children and my lives. We were so active and eating much healthier. One of the reasons I did the surgery was to ensure I was using all the tools I could to provide a healthy lifestyle for my children. Coming from an obese family I feared my kids would pick up the same bad habits. Although, even at my largest I was very strict about what my children consumed. The last two years I started having great difficulties. My band ended up prolapsing and all the fluid had to be removed. My stomach relaxed down and we started filling the band again. Shortly after my second fill I had problems beginning again. The doctor felt the band prolapsed again and removed all the fluid. I went back and had another upper GI to find even with no fluid the band was still moderately restricting. This was causing great difficulty with eating. I was vomiting and having a hard time eating any foods beyond cereal, soup, turkey bacon, and yogurt. It was decided the band needs to be removed and the thought is to convert to the sleeve at the same time. I know very little about the sleeve and worry about if this is the right choice. I had no problem with the band up to this point and had no significant health side effects. I have heard some concerns about the dangers of the sleeve and worry being a single mom of three if this is the best choice for me. I would really appreciate any feedback on the conversion. The dangers, side effects, and potential risks. I have not met with the surgeon yet to discuss this as I have testing I have to complete prior to meeting with him. But I would like to have some idea of what I am facing at decision time. I would appreciate any advise. Thank you and best wishes to all as you go through and continue through the process. Chasity

Sincerely, Alex Brecher Founder, BariatricPal Hearty and Healthy Menu to Say, “Thanks, Dad!” What does Dad want? If he’s the stereotypical guy, he’s pretty simple when it comes to food. Some comfort food can be the most direct way to letting him know how much you love and appreciate him, but you are not doing him any favors by serving up high-fat, high-carb, high-calorie fare. These great-tasting ideas can help you get a Father’s Day meal on the table fast while keeping your weight loss surgery diet in mind. In the Center: Steak A fatty steak can be a diet breaker, but Tender Flank Steak is not. It is a savory and satisfying dish. Preparation only takes minutes; just remember to leave four hours to marinate the meat. Double the recipe, using two pounds of beef, and you will have 8 total servings, each with 26 grams of protein and less than 1 gram of carbohydrates. Guy Bonus: Leftovers! A big steak can do double or triple duty in the coming days. Leave Dad with some large lettuce leaves (instead of bread) and sliced avocados for steak wraps for tomorrow’s lunch. On the Side: Pureed Cauliflower If you’re a meat and potatoes guy, you have to have your potatoes…unless you have Mock Mashed Potatoes. You can make it with frozen cauliflower, or try a blend of cauliflower and cooked carrots, parsnips, or turnips. This is another great recipe to double. Serve it with Instant Chicken Gravy made Cream of Chicken Protein Soup. Guy Bonus: Midnight noshing! When Dad has the late-night munchies, he won’t do much damage by finishing up the “mashed potatoes” and gravy. For Dessert: Grilled Fruit You can get your quality time with Dad if you keep him company while he grills up a healthy dessert in the form of peaches, pineapple, or watermelon. Slice the fruit and grill it plain or with a bit of cinnamon or balsamic vinaigrette. You can put a small amount of goat cheese or another soft cheese on the fruit before serving it. Guy Bonus: The grill! By letting Dad make dessert, you’re help him feel useful and in control, and that’s what dads are for, right? Weight Loss Surgery: A Guy Thing or Not? If you are a weight loss surgery patient or you have been looking into weight loss surgery, you may have noticed something: there seem to be a lot of women! It is not your imagination. About 80 percent, or four out of every five, WLS patients are women. Why the Difference? Why are men so much less likely to get WLS? It is not because men are skinnier; obesity rates are almost the same between men and women. Reasons for the WLS gap may include: • Differences in perception of health, as women may recognize health risks earlier than men. • Cultural factors, as women tend to feel more pressure to lose weight than men. • Perception of need, as men may be more likely to feel that they can do it without surgery than women. More than women, men may feel that WLS is the easy way out, or they may be embarrassed at the rapid weight loss that their acquaintances may notice. They may also feel more out of place ordering WLS friendly fare at restaurants or eating “diet foods” in public. Should You Break the Trend? Male or female, the same factors should determine whether WLS is for you. • Have you tried multiple diet and exercise programs? • Do your BMI and health status make you a good candidate? • Are you ready to commit to a lifetime of healthier choices? If your WLS goes well and you embrace the changes, you can expect the benefits that can make life better. You can lose weight and get back your energy. Better yet, you can spend more time with your kids now and in the future. Get Motivated with Some Together Time At the end of the day what matters are the people you love. For Father’s Day, whether or not you are with your dad, honor the ones you love while you promote healthy behaviors together. Cook Up a Storm Dad may not truly dislike cooking. He may just not know how to cook, especially when it comes to WLS friendly foods. Whether it is father or grown-up child who is the WLS patient, both of you can benefit from preparing some high-protein, low-carb quick fixes as you spend quality time together. • Layer yogurt with Protein Cereal and berries to make an elegant breakfast parfait. • Transform an infamous doughnut burger from a heart attack on a plate into a weight loss special by swapping Protein Pancakes for the doughnut and turkey burger for ground beef. • Toss Protein Pasta with Low-Carb Sauce and spinach or cooked broccoli or other vegetables. Get Active Now and Forever One reason to get WLS is to be able to keep up with the family. To keep up the motivation, try scheduling a family hike or other activity, such as a trip to the beach. Notice how good it feels when you spend the time being active together – or think about how good it would feel if you could all keep up together. It’s a good time to remind each other why the hard work is worth it. Whether you are a dad, a future dad, or a product of a great dad or father figure, we want to wish you a Happy Father’s Day! I feel very good considering I just had surgery 2 days ago. I've been able to eat jello, yogurt and plenty of fluids. Going to have creamy soup tonight. I have 6 incision sites and they look great. Dr Garth Davis said my surgery was Video perfect. I am so glad I don't have any drains. They removed a lap-band. It feels great to finally cross the hurdle of having the surgery done. The waiting and liquid diet had me very nervous. Sent from my SM-J700T1 using BariatricPal mobile app

In the realm of bariatric surgery, Cream of Wheat is considered a slider, a.k.a. slurry food. Slurry foods 'slide' into our sleeves before rapidly entering our intestines. They do not stay in our stomachs long enough to challenge the sleeve or provide a sense of fullness or satiety. Hence, you will never feel full eating Cream of Wheat. You will not feel full until you start eating solids such as meats, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, non-starchy veggies, and other foods that will challenge your sleeve. Good luck to you.
