<HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d9d9d9; COLOR: #d9d9d9" SIZE=1> Hello all! I've been banded over a year now and well it's just this thing in my body that makes it difficult for me to eat but hasn't really helped me in any life altering way to lose weight. Anyhoo, on Friday I noticed pain when trying to eat and since then have not even been able to get mushies down. I struggled with a bowl of yogurt and granola (broken up tiny granola) this morning. I had a hard time eating ice cream last night even. Oh and I know what your thinking (ice cream, no wonder she's not losing)!! But let me assure you the ice cream is out of sheer desperation as I was so hungry and didn't have anything else on hand that should go down easily. Tonight it has taken me nearly five hours to get down a completely melted (water consistancy) smoothy and it HURT going down. Every drop! Okay, I was going off track for a minute. So, here's the thing, I've moved out of state and my doc is in TJ. I am BROKE and have no insurance and no doctor to go see. So, I am trying to figure out what is going on with me so I can plan my next move. Any advice is appreciated!!!

port location and size
joanne1970 replied to radiik's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
mine is located under my right rib although every doc has there spot that they pick. If I am lying flat and I push firmly I can feel it otherwise I cant. I am sure you can feel it better after weight loss. It kinda feel like a ball under your skin maybe the size of one of those kids bouncy balls. It's there as long as your band is there. I figure if I am evey skinny enough for it to show I'll get a cool tattoo over it! -
My hubby is also a big guy. He has always been athletic but is very much an "apple shape" (you know, big belly, skinny legs) which is the worst for men and enhances there chances of a heart attack. Well, anyway he sure got a wake up call at my lap band seminar. My surgeon, having previously being obese himeself before being banded, was blunt about all of the concesquences of being overweight. That lecture changed both of our lives. Maybe take him to the sugeons office to hear all about how losing weight can help his whole life be better. The band was not right for my husband, but hearing all of the info he may get in gear to make a change in his life!

Tired Of Feeling Like A Patient
former_vbg replied to tinfoil_heroine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just hang in there. You will look back on this time and realize how short it was in the scheme of things. Think about how much time it took from when you started thinking about having the weight loss surgery until the time it took for you to have the surgery. I don't know if you had a lot of insurance hoops or not, but chances are it took a lot longer than a month's time. Soon enough you will be on "normal" foods and yes eating out at this stage is pretty difficult. I would try to avoid that until you are cleared to eat solid foods. -

Whip out your crystal balls please!

I went to Hawaii at about four months. I had TONS of energy and had lost 52 pounds (I started at 280 with 120 to lose). I did take unjury chicken Soup with me as well as nectar Fuzzy Naval to try and help keep me on track. I definitely also let myself have other things like papaya and pineapple as I love them and did not want to feel cheated of the Hawaii experience. I walked and swam a lot. I returned from 2 weeks away the exact same weight but then dropped 7 pounds in my first 5 days home! One of the funny things was that since I was with my family- for a family wedding in a house rented for ten of us- it always seemed to me like they ate constantly! No sooner did it seem that the hours of prep for Breakfast was over than it was time for lunch! I felt freed of that. -
Question about fills...
zeniada replied to dlynn1635's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know what you mean I was very tight back in Nov-Dec and couldnt really eat I resorted to slider foods and ended up not losing but gaining because I wasnt able to eat and when I did I'd get stuck and slime, after about a month I got .5cc's removed and felt so much better now I'm to the point where I feel I need a very small fill to get me at my "sweet spot". -
Joining a gym - tips needed please
lauramomof3 replied to nagaraj's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i have never been to a gym before this journey that i am on. i meet with a personal trainer a few times for her to set my machines/weights for me. she told me how to use the stationary bicycle, treadmill and the eliptical. it took some time to get use to the eliptical, but i love it. 22 min and it burns 377 cals in that alone. then if you do all of the weight machine then you burn another 300 or so cals. i love doing those two things and i also liked the step class that i was doing, but had to stop because my foot is having problems. seeing the ortho on march 1st. i am going to try a basic spin class tomorow. may not be able to walk the next day but going to give it a whirl!! hope your gym experince goes well. -

Worried/Borderline Obsesssed with Looking Older
CowgirlJane replied to triplenmomma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One reason I am content with a BMI in the upper end of normal range versus say 18-20 is that I feel that I look more youthful. Not just my face my whole profile. We are all different and have different tastes but to me skinny can look older in women. My friend is a skinny guy and he calls me betty boop because I have some roundness left at 148 that I would not have at say 125. Being the smart fella that he is, he assures me that my roundness/ curves are hot...lol. I am 5'5". Works for me, although I would l like to be under 145...but it is very individual and I know many WANT to get really thin. To each her own. What I do for my face is protect it from the sun (and have for years) use oil of Olay regenerist products (have for years), don't smoke, eat healthy, stay hydrated and picked a mother with beautiful skin. I worried alot about it too and when I was losing weight I really thought my face looked awful...a type of dismorphia really. I finally realized that the last time I saw my face non obese I was like 22 so I took some time to accept the late 40s face looking back at me. I am over it, love being healthy and am proud of my looks. If I EVER doubt myself I just have to look at some before photos..... Don't let these fears cast doubt. Being a healthy weight has so many rewards. -
So I finally received insurance approval this week. My surgery is set for 2/26. I've gone through so many emotions now that this is all becoming reality. I wonder if I will truly be able to do this. I'm afraid of failing and just praying that this will finally be the end of this journey of losing and gaining. I'm not trying to be skinny....I just want to live!! My babies need me and I have to do this for them just as much as for myself. I'm looking forward to being able to be physically active enough to take them to the park, ride bikes etc. Even though I'm nervous I'm also excited at the thought of the new me! I've read so many posts here over the past few months and am so inspired by all of the inspirational and insightful posts. So since my family doesn't agree with my decision to have the surgery...this message board has been my source of support through this process. I'm looking forward to walking through this journey with lots of support from fellow sleevers! Sent from my ADR6330VW using VST

Preop Diet Or Not?
Eat That Frog replied to SoonToBeThinKAT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am the same size as you, my doctor requires a hybrid diet. Daily, I can have 2 Protein shakes, 2 servings skim milk, 1 serving of fruit, 1 Protein Bar and a light dinner (no carbs). It has been tough, but I know that every pound I lose before surgery is one less I have to lose after surgery. I am glad he requires this, otherwise I know I would have "pigged out" and gained weight prior to surgery. When is your surgery? -
A friend of mine had surgery a few years ago to help her lose weight. She has done really well with it, so I became interested and getting the surgery myself. I don't have the money or insurance to have the surgery in the US so I am considering surgery in Mexico. There are so many doctors to choose from and I want to make sure that I choose the right one. Any suggestions on who is the best?

Been struggling for a decade of being obese!
suzysuz86 replied to Lisa Ducharme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to wait 6 months before my surgery and I actually gained 10 pounds in those six months, I felt like I needed to eat all the bad foods because after surgery I wouldn't be able to. Had the sleeve done April 17th and I have lost 70 pounds since my surgery date! I was worried I would Stoll want all the bad foods still but its actually the opposite. Good luck! -
I see you are in Florida! Do you have access to a pool? Swimming is great exercise, and if your shoulders can't handle "freestyle" you can always flip on your back and do "elementary backstroke." If you don't want to swim, just walking in the water is great exercise too, and takes the weight off of your joints.

Met with the surgeon for the first time today, scheduled for July 1st. I am so excited. Now starts 1 week of 2 Protein Shakes per day and one 300 calorie meal. Then one week of liquids? We haven't really talked about that yet. This is what I had to do: September 2012 - General class Sep-May Meetings with Family Practice Physician 3 meetings with a psychologist 3 meetings with a dietician 4 meetings with a nurse educator 1 meeting with surgeon 2 meetings with PA for weight loss pre op What I have left: Final visit with Physician prior to surgery to do a final weight check and education on where to go. Pre Op Physical. I am so excited! The next two weeks will fly by.

Hi everyone! I’m new here. I am going to Dr Carmody’s office in Richmond, Virginia this week for my initial consultation. I am thinking of getting the gastric sleeve surgery. I’m so nervous! I have been obese my entire life. I really gained weight when I was pregnant with my 2nd son and never lost the pregnancy weight. That was 11 years ago! I considered the surgery 8 years ago, went to the seminar, visited the nutritionist, had the EGD... but I decided against it because I didn’t have the money at the time. A few questions for you all. 1. Did you work on weight loss before your consultation? I’m afraid that I will have a tougher time losing the prescribed weight before surgery if I’m working hard on weight loss now. 2. How long did you stay in the hospital after your gastric sleeve surgery? 3. Does your weight loss team offer support groups? If so are they worthwhile?

Hi Im Bob. Im 10 days out(March 10th) and already down 32#. I dont know how! I havent done anything out of the ordinary, wait, yes I have. Ive gone from probably 4-5000 cal. a day to around 1000 if Im lucky. I went for my checkup with my surgeon yesterday and before I got on the scale I told her I would be so dissappointed if I didnt lose(I expected around 10#), I couldnt believe it when the scale said 311.1#. My preop weight was 343#. Im so excited, this is enough motivation!!! I havent exercised, at least not anything other than playing with my kids in the yard now that its nice outside. The dr. told me it would slow down, 1-2# per week. Im happy with that and I understand when I eat normal foods again it will slow down but Im wondering if I can be one of the few who lose 100 plus in by next spring (2011). Im planning on joining Snap-fitness when Im able to resume exerciseing! Thanks, good luck to all!

My rules for when to break the rules and pounds as units of time.
kyethra commented on kyethra's blog entry in Blog 13553
Before the band, I used to sometimes measure time in terms of "pounds ago". 100 pounds ago was quite a while ago, high school years. 60 pounds ago would be more recent, about when I was 19 and 20. 40 pounds ago I met my husband. Twenty pounds ago I started to give up on losing that 20 pounds from 40 pounds ago. Now that I have the band, I suppose I could try it in the opposite sense. It is sort of strange in a way, having my linear sense of time disrupted. Maybe its a good reminder that life and time really are cyclical. Now I can say that 40 pounds ago I had weight loss surgery and was waiting to see if I got into grad school. 10-15 pounds ago, I found out I got in. Hmm... I've also been working on my rules for when to not follow the rules. Normally there is a stage in every diet for me, when "just this once" starts to happen more and more frequently until its always just this once and I think we all know that it is pretty downhill from there. ) So I have my rules on when there can be no rules. If it doesn't fit in here, then sorry, I have to be good: 1) My birthday; whole day is a free for all (if my birthday is "missed" due to illness I may reschedule for a later date. 2) Celebration dinners (and no, everyday cannot be a celebration) 3) Christmas, New years eve, the eight major pagan holidays, and maybe a couple other holidays I specify in advance. 4) Cinco de Mayo. Its mexican food and margaritta goodness. 5) the times I order movie theater popcorn so long as these times do not exceed 8 times per year and the bucket never exceeds a medium (probably won't be bigger than a small). I get soda on those days too. 6) vacation If its not on that list, then its not allowed to be a free for all. Naturally, I reserve the right to revise my list, but I think this is a good starting one. -
So, here I am one month post-sleeve...lost 22 pounds since then. But over the weekend went out with friends...tried to make smart choices...indulged a little bit, and am now up 0.8 pounds. I am very frustrated with myself. I find that if I am out to eat anywhere outside my home that it's a challenge to find foods that are soft enough, lean enough, low in fat/carbs/salt, and that I actually like (life long finicky eater). Seems like almost everything is so carb-heavy, so rich, and so salty! I also find it very hard to eat slowly enough and take small bites when I don't eat in isolation. It takes so long to eat, and I'm worried how I'll manage when I start back to work. Has anyone else dealt with these issues? How have you overcome them? I want very much to continue losing weight so I can be a healthier, happier, better me! Maybe 0.8 pounds doesn't sound like much, but it's the wrong direction, and I worked my ass off to lose it! I am hopeful some of this is Water retention due to salt, and maybe because I've not been getting my exercise due to being away from my exercise equipment while I'm recovering...I'm staying with my parents in the Pacific Northwest and rainy season is here...I so hate to walk in the rain. Thoughts?

How to deal with brain hunger
pnw218 replied to Lillie24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is a challenge for sure. I knew that I liked food but had no idea how addicted I was. The eating less part is easy - if you eat too much you will get sick or be very uncomfortable. It is the wanting something and not being able to have it in the quantity you want. Or knowing that it isn't something healthy to be eating. It does really help when the scale goes down, clothes fit better, "old" smaller clothes fit again ... and when someone notices. My husband has been very good at noticing the changes. I also cut my hair a bit today and he said I looked 6 years younger! LOL uh, ok ... 6 years? Why not 5 or 7?? For me, I don't feel it is bad enough for counseling at this point. It seems more like a bad habit to break. I am smart enough to know that I shouldn't be eating in such large amounts - just have to get mentally used to it. I am finally starting to feel more like exercising also; hopefully I will be released from my back dr soon for something besides walking. If you recognize ahead of time that you have an issue with food mentally, you may be able to deal with it on your own. If not, I would try to find a counselor who deals with addictions and understands weight issues. I have seen counselors a few times over the years and you want someone you can easily connect with. Good Luck! -

I had my surgery on May 27, 2016. I have had a lot of complications and now live with moderate nausea as a baseline feeling and can only function when using the 6 antinausea meds I have but I am so happy I had this surgery. I started this weight loss journey at my highest weight of 540. I was able to lose 60 pounds in the 6 months before surgery and went into surgery at 480. Now at almost 4 months post op I can almost wave goodbye to the 400's at 402! I can't wait to see that blessed 3 on the scale! I have not been this low a weight since February of 2012 ☺️ I am so thankful for the help this surgery has given me and I'm ready for my life to finally start ❤️
