  1. Hello! I'm Liz and I am new to these forums. I wish I found this place so much sooner! I had my sugery February 9, 2011 and am down about 100lbs. I still have about 90-100lbs to go. I moved from Arkansas to Kansas almost a year ago so I've had the experience of finding a new surgeon for my fills and what not. I had my very first fill 6 weeks post op and did great. I had him add a little more about 6 months later and have done well with that. I moved after that so I went about 6 more months without seeing a surgeon. I had my new doctor add 1 cc of fluid and became totally obstructed. That was the most horrible experience I've had during this time. I went back to my doctor less than a week later and he took 2 ccs out. I gained weight for the first time since my surgery and that has been very disheartening. So last week I had him add 1 cc so I am back to where I was before I visited my new doctor. I am still trying to teach myself to eat correctly. I get so hungry and then overeat and that is so uncomfortable. Anyway, am very excited to have people to talk to about this experience and look forward to meeting new people and learning new things.
  2. I was fortunate in that my surgeon didn't require weight loss for my pre-op diet.
  3. One week from today I have surgery and today was my preop - with the exception of 2 spoonfuls of pb butter and 2 broccoli florets I've been excellent on the liquid diet. So I was hoping for a big number today .... 3 pounds ish - that's it!! I was totally jaded and thought "great ~is this a thing of signs to come"- trust me I have weight to loose - felling a little salty - been on preop for 9 days - been on ketogenic diet during medical supervised and lost 6 lbs total Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Smell and taste

There are many senses that will go through changes as you lose weight. Your body is going through huge hormonal changes and those can cause issues with smell. Similar to a pregnant woman. It should subside as your nose gets back on track with things. Tastes will change too in case you haven't noticed that.
  6. Sounds like you are experiencing dumping syndrome caused by trying to consume too much at a meal. Are you constraining yourself to the prescribed meal volumes? Another possibility is that you developed a stricture. But I would think at 3 months, this is rather late. In some cases, scar tissue or inflammation can narrow the new connection between the stomach and intestine. This is called a stricture. Strictures usually develop four to six weeks after surgery, and rarely occur. Patients with strictures will notice that they are progressively less able to take in fluids and food. Strictures can be treated with an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with image sensors and special tools at the tip. A doctor will use an endoscope with a tiny inflatable balloon at its tip to open the stricture. Anyways it is important to focus on the most important elements which are Protein, fluids and Vitamins. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into energy and thus you lose weight. So from what you said, work on your protein problems. At your stage another option other than Protein shakes becomes available. These are Protein Bars such as Quest Bar.
  7. I was sleeved in November 2013. Since then I have lost 54 lbs and have had mini stalls along the way. They come and go and can be so frustrating but keep up the good work and believe me it will pass and weight will drop. My doctor said that one pound loss a week is really what they expect for having the sleeve surgery. I too thought it would shed off faster but I'm really grateful it's going gradual way!!!
  8. I went to Dr. Kelly in Feb. Trish was my coordinator. I did meet Dr. Ponce after my surgery and he is a wonderful man, warm and very caring. He does not speak a lot of English but Trish translated then and I am sure he has a translator. He gives great advice for post -op. I was really impressed with the amount of care he puts into the post diet he gives. I asked someone on here for it for I was told it was great. It is! Plans for each meal post op. I believe all the way to goal weight, if you chose to follow it. Trish took me, my husband and my sleeve sister to the coast to see the beach, on the way back we had to stop by the hospital Dr. Ponce works at. I was totally happy with Dr. Kelly but if I did not know of Kelly I would of gladly of went with Dr. Ponce. The hospital he performs surgery at is completely awesome. Trish is awesome also, you are in great hands! You have the best scenerio, excellent Dr., coordinator and hospital!!! Really!!!! Did you ask Trish if there is anyone else going around the same time as you, if so she will put you in contact with them, that is exactly how I met my sleeve sister before surgery. She lives in Minasota and we talked on the phone before we ever went to MX. We still talk .. Best to you.
  9. Hello; I am being submitted for approval tomorrow and am concerned because I was told that Medicare requires among other things, 5 years worth of doctor notes with weight information. Like many overweight people, I didn't like to be weighed. So for my notes, I only have the last 3 years notes with weights and the first 2 years it says I refused to be weighed. Has anyone else run into this particular problem? I was told that some insurance companies will take pictures if the date of the pic is shown on the pic. I am hoping not to be denied, but was wondering that if they are a stickler for this information, what can I do. I cannot speak to the pre-cert department with United Health Care as they will only speak with the provider. Member services is just telling me to wait until the information is submitted and see if they contact my doctor for more information. I am really started to stress over this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. K
  10. Hello, All!! I had looked at this site back in March thinking that I wanted to get this lap-band. Well, after several months, and now failure again on my own attempts to loose weight and (BTW 20 lbs HEAVIER!!!!!) I am back!! I have been to my first consult with my surgeon - Dr. Zane Prewitt in Menonomee Falls, and have my psyc consult on 11/16 and dietary consult 11/17, and hopefully surgery before X-mas!! What a gift to me that will be. I am SOOOOO excited. I must admit, today I jumped back onto weight watchers with a real mission and real goal-to change my habits and my life. I have so much to live for and be healthy for. So here we.......look forward to talking with you all here and looking to you all for support!!! Thanks fro reading and talk with ya all later! - Ann

    Approved!

Hi Joy! I'm also going on10/11. I let my surgeon tell me about all options and we decided the VSG was the best fit for me due to digestion issues (he didnt want to involve cutting the intestines) and history of success in weight loss, but not in maintenance or obtaining goal. The lap band wasn't an option, I have 2 coworkers who lost weight at first, maybe half-way to goal, then they started to gain weight. That's the story of my life! I am scared, yet so excited to have this done!

    Newbie But Not Sweating It.

Hi Patti ! I was also banded by Dr Lopez-Corvala on 8/19/11, also great experience, specially that it was my first surgey ever !!! Are you also going back to get your adjustments there? Since my surgery I've only needed two adjustments, I'm down 69 lbs and down from a size 20 to a size 12 I'm working on dropping another 20 lbs to be in a normal BMI. Good luck on your weight lost journey!!! Lunad
  13. Sure it can restart your weightloss, that is the great thing about the band. It is adjustable and there for you when you are ready. I recently let things slide, not for a year but for several months and gained back some weight. As the pounds came back I started to get down on myself and started to try and talk myself into being too ashamed to go back for a fill where they would see that I was backsliding. But I sucked it up I went in and got a fill and lost the regained pounds and then some. My advice, review the rules and take the fills slowly until you are where you need to be...and please don't be down on yourself.
  14. Congrats on having a date for your sleeve! You are wise to start to make changes now. I really did not do much in the way of dieting before getting sleeved and I so somewhat regret that (especially when I see someone's ticker who has a surgery date near mine and they have 2x the amount of weight because they dieted BEFORE the sleeve!) I could not let my BMI drop below 40 to be covered under my insurance, so mentally that just gave me a reason "not" to diet. BUT, the changes that I did make before getting sleeved were these: I dropped the diet soda habit. I didn't have a problem doing this (I used to drink 1-2 diet sodas per day) and back in July I quit buying soda to have in the house. So it then became an occassional treat when I would be eating out. Then sometime in early Sept. I just quit. (AND YOU CAN DO THE SAME WITH THE SWEET TEA! I would start by decreasing the amount of sugar you put in your tea, or switch to Splenda.) I also quit the coffee/caffeine habit. (beware because even regular non-sweet tea has caffeine...and I love non-sweet tea but not the caffeine.) I switched my coffee to decaf before surgery and didn't have coffee for 4 weeks post-surgery. I also decreased my carb intake. Just little changes. Instead of eggs and toast, I would drop the toast. I got in the habit of not drinking with my meals. I started taking my Vitamins BEFORE surgery to get me in the habit of taking them daily. I already was a regular exerciser, so I didn't have to do much there, but if you do not exercise I would recommend starting something you can stick with. Just even starting to walk will help you recover post-surgery, and walking is not only good, but necessary post-surgery to help prevent blood clots. THIS WILL BE AN AWESOME YEAR FOR YOU!!! I think attitude and gratitude makes a huge difference in this whole process. Going into this with the right attitude and having gratitude that you are being given a opportunity to change your life will carry you far! Good luck with everything!

    Need advice before monday please

Michelle, I knew from the beginning that I'd be getting my fills as close to home as possible. And Michigan is a LONG way from TJ. I knew when I got on the plane to come home that the only way I'd be going back was if I had to have the band revised or removed. The airfare, taxi, hotel, food and fill would be over 1000.00 each time if I returned to TJ, and unfortunately that's just not possible. And truthfully.... I felt VERY uneasy just being in Mexico itself. That's why I found someone who's (in my opinion) highly qualified and close to home. he's done over 200 bands himself and has a nice weight loss clinic set up- he was one that I called to get a price from and talked to before I found out how much surgery costs. If I had insurance that would have covered the band I would have had it done in Port Huron Michigan. So now,I need to have my fills take up no more then 1/2 of a day due to my schedule and the schedules of my 4 young children. I wish I could go back to Dr. Kuri, I'd be crazy not to if I lived close like you do. His fills are FREE for life. And yes, this Dr. will do flouro. not every time, but he does use an ultrasound to guide the needle into the port so that the chances of damaging the port or puncturing the tubing are lessened.

    Need advice before monday please

Pati, I would go for the two year deal. No one knows how many fills you will need. I have had 5 fills and one unfill in 19 months. You would be better off with someone who will offer you a program for your first two years that is local. You may not need more than 1-2, but most bandsters need 3-5 in their first year during ongoing weight loss. The need for a fill should slow down as you get closer to goal. So that would be my advice. Considering it...

PB: productive burp, projectile burp..... it happens to me a lot because I continue to eat so fast..... it's not really puking.. but say you are chewing a piece of chicken and you swallow it before it is mush....... you fill up quick and it can not go through the band so it comes right back up and out...... (usualy in the same form you swallowed it in) Gross but true... Yes, I have no problems drinking diet dr pepper and parrot bay.... Carbonation DOES bother some people.... which is why you will read that some people let their soda go flat before drinking it... (I don't seem to have that problem) Beer because of carbonation does give people problems as well. I had surgery on Thursday and was back to work the following Monday, my boss still has no clue, since I just took two days of PTO. (I have a desk job) Is it worth it??????????? HELLLLLLLL YESSSSSSSSSS! The band is a great tool.. and it has helped me to lose the weight once again........... but the real trick is that it will help me MAINTAIN it!

    Finally!!!!

Had a very small 1/4 cc added fill, and my weight is dropping...went from 185 to 180!!!!!! Im sure the 3 day full liquids is making that look great, but it is a jumpstart mentally. My chest looks smaller and I'm feeling great. Feeling less hungry between meals and my meals are substantially smaller, getting about a half cup just this week. I think this just might b the green zone.

First meetings to All HELL breaks loose.

To be honest, I thought the girls on the left were two different folks than the ones on the right. You two have really lost a lot of weight. You two look great!
  20. My PCP mentioned it the other day. I also have a long time friend who I have shared many things both good and bad with and she mentioned it to me last week too. No it has not been all rosy. My friend said that last week after I was talking about being in a slump and having to refocus. I have told some people out of all the weight you lose, the most important loss is between your ears. Good Luck to All

    Jealousy

Did all the women who are married, or have boyfriends have to do a lot of reassuring to their husbands/boyfriends about the surgery. My boyfriend is unsure about me having the surgery. I'm sure that part of his concern is for the riskability factor, but one of the first questions he asked was. "Are you going to want to go out to clubs, and be out on the town alot? I think he's jealous thinking about all the attention that I will receive once I start dropping of the PHAT. Everything that I told him about the surgery I don't think that he really received fully. I felt like I was given a LapBand presentation. So, what I did was write him a letter explaining to him about all the things that I have dealt with while being over weight. What his response is I am eager to see. I don't think that he will leave me or anything, I am just asking of ways to reassure him that this is a good choice, and the best choice for me in my life. Did you coupled women have the same problem? What did you do?
  22. OMG. I heard the same thing from my husband. I lost a lot of initial weight from my face and I look so much better..younger. My skin is fantastic...healthy eating and portion control works. I love my band and I should have done it sooner. I really feel more energetic now.
  23. I never told anyone, except close family members....and now that I have been at my optimal weight for a while now...no one asks anymore, everyone has gotten used to it, and takes it for granted this is who I am....done...time to move on to something else in the office to talk about. I even had some people tell me they cannot remember me ever being fat!! Now that's a compliment I will accept gladly.

    Eating

Trust me...the closer you get to the surgery date the more determined you will be.........I looked at some photos of myself last night and was shocked at how big I had gotten....The sleeve has saved my life I think........ Forced to limit food intake...you will have no choice.....Once the weight starts coming off....you will want to see progress faster and faster to get away from what you were before the surgery...... Every day I ask my hubby if he thinks I lost weight today....It is not about the loss really.....it is about your health....but for me the weight coming off is the beginning......

    Pre Op Testing

My doctor required the same as Lanakila except I did not have to turn in a 5 year weight history. My insurance did not required it. Since I have a cardiologist my doctor wanted a cardiac clearance for surgery as well. It was basically a paper from stating my risk level for surgery.
