    Pureed food

    Is Reser’s seafood salad acceptable during the purée stage? I’m 2.5 weeks post op and my doc has me on purée. I’ve done homemade refried beans and can tolerate it some, scrambled eggs, broths, yogurts. I’m burnt on protein shakes and I’m trying to work on getting protein from food as much as I can even though it’s quite difficult at this stage. I’m wondering if the seafood salad would help me at all or if I should avoid it at all cost

  3. hi-- I copied and pasted from my original post. "OK, anybody have persistent diarrhea? They are apparently just now connecting the loss of pancreatic function with WLS. Sometimes. Google it. I went for months to the GP, and they threw antibiotics at this gas/poop problem; while I ate yogurt to get it to stop. Horrible gas as well. BAD stinky gas, lol sorry. Nothing worked. I ASKED MY WEIGHT LOSS DOC TOO. "Oh no, no diarrhea reported with this." That was horse hockey as well. I then went to a Gastrointestinal specialist, who did a protease enzyme test. Turns out my pancreas is not working. While it is not life threatening, it is darn inconvenient. I am not posting this to have you not have the surgery -- I still would have done it, even if I had a crystal ball. BUT if you have those symptoms, Google it, ask your doc, and maybe even if your WLS doctor says nope, go to a Gastrointestinal one. It can be managed. FYI."

    Food Scale...at work

    No, I just weigh it before I pack it and/or bring portion controlled, single-serving items (I am very guilty of eating Lunchables and leaving the crackers behind in a pinch LOL). I actually pack both my breakfast AND lunch AND snacks when I go into the office, a 10 hr day that starts at 6:30 AM once a week. The way I figure it I need to take care of Future Me's needs so I don't feel tempted to go poking around in the vending machine. My lunch usually looks like this (I am 18m post op and am in maintenance, but my calories are low because I am a small person): Breakfast: Zero sugar Chobani, 1/4 oz of chopped walnuts or pecans, Super Coffee protein shake as a mid morning snack. (all in, about 200 calories and 25g of protein) Lunch: Veggies, some kind of dip (if you aren't making dips with greek yogurt what are you doing with your life?), usually a couple of "lunchmeat roll ups" that are each one slice of deli meat and half a slice of cheese, another 1/4 oz of nuts (usually pistachios this time), a couple pickle slices (usually somewhere around 250-ish calories and another 25g of protein) Snacks: Options include Babybel light and a couple triscuits, Campbell's Well Yes sippable soups, protein shakes, or half a protein bar (I usually end up with leftovers)(any of these would give another 10g or so of protein). I eat dinner at home with my husband on these days and it's usually something protein-heavy

    no - I just prepped my food at home and packed however much I could eat of it into a container and just took that. I also always had a couple of things of Greek yogurt and a ready-to-drink protein shake or two in my office refrigerator.

    3 weeks post op

    I pretty much eat the same exact things. I had miso soup today and a 3oz piece of grilled chicken plus protein shakes, yogurt and decaf tea. At 3 weeks post I feel like I can eat. I also have not lost anymore weight this week. Thinking I should try and stick to liquids only for another week.

    I am 3 weeks out today too! I’m still on liquids for another week, that’s just my Dr. it’s hard seeing others at same place eating soft foods! Today though I’ve been “grazing” all day. Since I have no issue with liquids, nothing is really filling me up. I’ve had a protein shake, soup, sugar free pudding with almond milk, more soup, yogurt, and jello. Not really hungry, but totally not satisfied.
  8. I’m also really sensitive to the metallic, chemical flavor of protein shakes (Muscle Milk makes me want to vomit), so I tried dozens of different protein shakes before my surgery. My favorites: Fairlife Vanilla (melted DQ ice cream is the best way to describe it), Fairlife Chocolate (like chocolate milk), Premiere Protein Cake Batter (to me, this tastes like a vanilla shake should) I like these flavors blended with ice and banana: Fairlife Power Strawberry Banana, Premiere Protein Chocolate, Premiere Protein Peanut Butter Chocolate For unflavored protein, I use Bariatric Fusion. Can be mixed in with all sorts of things, like yogurt, sugar free pudding and Gatorade Zero. I’ve also heard that Unjury protein powder is good (but haven’t tried it yet).
  9. I have discovered Premier Protein cereal as a good alternative in the mornings. I have a small bowl of the berries flavor cereal with a scoop or so of plain yogurt and almond milk or regular milk, let it sit for a good 20 minutes to soften (bc it is too hard and crunchy otherwise), and then enjoy. It adds about 30g of protein to start my day and I find it enjoyable.
  10. I was able to drink protein powders fine before my surgery, but afterward they make me want to vomit when I just put them in my mouth. So, getting my protein in has been hard. I definitely lean on greek yogurt a lot or suck on a tablespoon on peanut butter. Cottage cheese is a good choice for something savory. I can stomach these, as I can drink them in one go and it is easier: https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/bariatricpal-25g-whey-protein-collagen-power-shots-cran-grape For when you are later in your journey and can eat more solid food: I have also found a protein granola from Aldi (https://www.aldi.us/en/products/breakfast-cereals/granola/detail/ps/p/millville-protein-granola-assorted-varieties-1/) that is delicious and doesn't make me sick, which I stir into my greek yogurt to give it some texture. I also eat nuts for a snack or babybel cheese, that I chew very well. I have had a DS, though, so I can eat higher fat food than a gastric bypass, so I don't know how helpful all of this advice is for you.
  11. My surgeon does not do protein shakes. I was told to drink milk, It does not matter which one they all have the same protein count. Skimmed, semi skimmed and full fat. 20 ounces of milk has almost 19 grams of protein. You could add Greek yogurt to that. Some have more protein than others, the one I eat is 200 grams and 16.6 grams of protein. Don't panic, you will work it out
  12. I couldn't drink those protein drinks for anything. To me they tase of metal and processed crap. Sorry. Not sorry. What did I do ? and what do I do now 12 years later ? I tried them pre surgery. Most of them made me horribly ill. I found out I cannot digest any of the sugar replacers or any of the milk replacers. It brings on colitis. Like weeks of the runs with terrible cramping. So.... I pre made myself super strong chicken broth; for post surgery I strained it through doubled cheese cloth. I kept and froze the chicken, and carrots separately. Later I made those into mashed carrots with some broth to thin it. And I basically food processed the chicken and had that as I was able to sip non clear liquids. I also made really strong vegetable broth - not soup, broth. With mushrooms and squash, and things like that. I froze my soups in tiny containers. And I made fish broth too. And beef broth. With the bones, and then super strained at first. I still make this and use it as the base for sauces, as I strain out any fats too. I eat simple proteins. I made and ate early on lots of chicken salad with some added broth, and humus instead of mayo. I still eat it that way. more protein and fiber. tuna mixed with greek yogurt. eggs mixed with yogurt for egg salad. Now, I make myself chicken thighs, and vegetables all the time. I like to use my crock pot to make boneless skinless thighs with carrots or chunks of sweet potato - and whatever vegetable I feel like adding. I am into gardening so I might add seasonal veggies like cabbage or beans or english peas, I use very little salt, lots of fresh herbs. I use the crock pot to make pot roast which comes out so tender and easy to eat, with tomatoes and serve it with cauliflower "rice" - I made all these things early on, and just mashed the heck out of things, adding homemade broth to smooth.

    Travel after surgery

    It really depends on how you heal as a person, I would imagine. I led a group of teenagers around Europe 4 weeks after surgery. My surgeon said that was the minimum amount of time he wanted me to wait before leaving the country (I think it was more in case I had medical issues in healing or with my gall bladder). Everything went fine. I packed protein powder, made sure I ordered only approved soft foods at restaurants, and drank water all day. Stopping in grocery stores along the way to pick up yogurt or cheese or premade protein shakes was also helpful. (I was super tired of that protein powder flavor by the end of the trip, though.)   14. hello! so i'm 2 weeks post gastric bypass at the moment and I've discovered that I cannot stand protein powders (tried multiple) so I'm panicking now because protein is going to be such a huge part of my life basically forever and I'm stuck on what to do, when I can start eating normally I love chicken so I can eat protein no problem but im 100% sure I'm not going to be getting enough and everyone uses protein shakes or drinks/yogurts and I just can't stand them I've been looking at protein supplements and you barely get 1 gram of protein per tablet so that's not viable like I was hoping unless I take 40 a day. I should of thought about the protein shake problem more but I was just concerned with 'get the surgery and get healthy' and now I'm left wondering what I'm supposed to do any advice would be greatly appreciated, im feeling like a grade A idiot at the moment sam

    Low On Iron

    Hi All , thanks so much that valuable info .I dread trying to get an appointment with my G/P - as anyone in the UK will tell you - it's a miracle if you don't just get the nurse or pharmacist . The dietitian told me that gentle Iron , Feraglobin , and Bariatric Vits won't do it for me and I need to get a treatment plan off my G/P .Yeah like that's easy . She is sending me to be re-tested in a month .I have found it nigh on impossible to stomach ANY food that isn't soft ie I live on cottage cheese , shakes , Oatabix ( when it's soft ) and yogurt plus Protein water .I have really tried to digest proper food but it kills me going down .I can manage chocolate and am tempted to have some very dark chocolate every day to get my iron up .It doesn't give me the runs . Memoryissues - you are so right .The dietitian will only do so much .I wish I could have an infusion but I'm likely just to be put on Ferrous Fumerate which hasn't worked so far . Thanks for all the tips everyone re caffeine , spacing out my iron pills, the Vit C etc .I can't have V8 juice unfortunately as I have a stoma ( have a colostomy ) and veg juice would play merry hell with it .My stoma must be male 'cos it's very loud , embarasses me in front of people ,and never shuts up 😒😆

    Favorite pureed/ soft foods?

    I ate a lot of Turkey chili and just chewed it up really well. I also had cottage cheese with marinara sauce heated up for less than 30 seconds. I ate mainly foods that I didn’t actually have to physically purée. Canned tuna and chicken, canned veggies like carrots and peas, scrambled eggs, yogurt. It’s probably the toughest phase!
  18. Yogurt, hummus, black beans with cheese, oat bran, air fryer cheese crisps, all kinds of soups.
  19. I had chili, avocados, hummus, scrambled eggs, egg bites, thickened soup, refried beans, yogurt, cottage cheese etc. The stage lasted about 10 days for me and they went fast, one recipe will last you a while since you are eating slow and testing your stomach.

    Kefir (preferably homemade) has the most probiotic of any food. Has millions. Far more than even yogurt.

    Length of liquid diet Post-op

    We didn't have any liquid only diet; we had puree and soft things (yogurt, scrambled eggs, etc.) in the hospital along with a lot of liquids, of course. The general rule the first month was to move between liquids, purees and soft solids as we could tolerate them; if we came across something that wasn't tolerated, then move back to proven foods and try that one again in a week or two. Some progressed more quickly than others. With protein shakes as a staple to ensure adequate protein, I started with broth, then graduated to thicker soups like vegetable or chicken noodle or rice with the chunks strained out, then just mashed the chunks as the next trial, then went unmashed and well chewed, etc. As the group had around twenty years experience in working with the sleeve (at that time), I wasn't about to argue with them being different than others online.

    Struggling with weight loss

    Honestly when I started adding foods like grilled chicken and other veggies I started noticing that my weight increased. I’ve lost a few of those pounds but not all. I’m not back eating just yogurt and drinking protein shakes. Occasionally I’ll eat grilled chicken and veggies but I limit it now. My vitamin levels are good. All blood work is good. yes I’ve talked to my wl team. They haven’t been much help ( in my opinion) they just seem to not believe me 🤷🏼‍♀️ Yes I do have artificial sweeteners. One coffee a day with Splenda and sugar free creamer. Sugar free jello and sugar free redi whip Very little processed food is in my diet. I will eat cheese with my veggies or chichen when I do eat that. Unless what I said above is considered processed. I eat no lunch meat or protein bars. My team has me on low calorie low carb and I stick to it. But occasionally I might go over but it’s not daily or even every other day. I weigh my food and don’t go over the 6 oz of food per meal I get 80 oz of water a day.
  24. Oh y’all. It’s been a little bit since I’m been on this forum. I’m struggling with any weight loss. It’s like I’ve hit a wall for the last 3 months. This is my stats. SD 4/26/22 / SW 216 / CW 175 / GW 130 / age 50 My team has me under 700 cal and less than 20 carbs a day. I use to basically eat yogurt for almost every meal 🤷🏼‍♀️. But my team say I wasn’t getting enough protein and my body was probably bored and that was causing my slow down in weight. So they had me to mix things up. So I started eating more protein (meats, chicken etc) well then I started started gaining 😡. My last weight in back in January was 173. I gained up to 180 when adding back food. Now I’m down to 175 but I can’t get the scale to move. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong 😑. My hair is still falling out and I’m definitely getting my protein and my vitamin levels are good. I just don’t feel like my team believes me when I tell them I’m not going over calories or carbs. I’m just beyond frustrated at this point.
