Home Thread...for the thread homeless :)

Cindy-I agree...he really needs to surround himself with people he trusts and hire a good accountant & lawyer. OH...and see a good dentist, lol. Irene-gee thanks for saving me some chocolate. I outta slap ya! :tt2: Michelle-how is the cleansing going? :w00t: My heart is with ya. Suzanne-I love breakfast for supper! Kat-does Rick work a regular schedule or is it all like just whenever he is needed, like on call....or is it both. Frank is salary (i kinda miss that OT) and his schedule is 4 on 4 off 12 hr shifts. We went to see How to Train Your Dragon today. Frank and I liked it but Macy could take it or leave it. Funny how that works, huh? I wish I would win the lottery. I told dh today that if we had the money I would go for a revision from lapband to bypass. Somethings gotta give. With bypass, you are not allowed to eat sugar. I need it to be a rule like that. I wish they made a Chantix pill that would make me not want sweets anymore like it made me not want cigarettes. I am so disappointed in myself. I ordered an MP3 player yesterday. I am probably the last one in the US to get one. i am so excited. I will be able to walk with music now . Now if I can just get up....lol Have a great night everyone.

Happy B-Day Angela!! I was late going in today and I am already home. My hands just hurt. I see the ortho on Tuesday so maybe he can work his magic. I had surgery on the left hand in 2006 and the right in 2007 but because I am still doing the same work all of my symptoms are back. I think I am going to look into the voice activated software. I have many many years to work. Kat-That job sounds perfect. Gives you a little extra money without taking up a bunch of your time. Suzie-How did it go? I have been thinking of you all day. Tomorrow is the big day....I am glad you will finally be getting some deserved rest even if it is part of your recovery. You are not going to know what to do with yourself. Michelle-I agree with Kat, it sounds like the flu or something....I hope you feel better soon, there is nothing worse like being sick to your stomach and having to take care of little ones. I forgot to tell you all that last week I swear that my band had slipped. I had the worst chest pain, reflux and kept PBing everytime I ate.....except for 3 cupcakes that I managed Friday and then Sunday everything was back to normal. I hate this band sometimes...especially when this happens and I still have at least 60 lbs. to lose. Have any you considered revising to something else? I am seriously considering the sleeve. Talk to you all soon. Bethany

    September Sleevers

Yolie, I am having lap band revision surgery in Dallas on the same day as you September 29!!! Let's keep in touch I'm so nervous!!
  5. Frmamomzeyez

    WHY?

I wish there was a way to know what is best for each individual. My choice on the sleeve was because of iron deficiency, vitamin D deficiency and heavy cycles. I was worried the bypass would make these things much worse and cause other problems for me. I would have loved to do the bypass because it comes with more weight lost. My surgeon and I both agreed on the sleeve. However I’m not sure 🤔 it was the right choice. I started out at 280 lost 37 before surgery and would like to be 170. I’m currently 8 days out and worried because I havent lost a pound. Spoke with my doctor yesterday who says I may not be getting in enough liquids and calories to lose anything. So I am praying that I made right decision. I don’t want to be one of those people that needs a revision.

    WHY?

This was not the old "RNY is superior to VSG" debate. To clarify I have a VSG is a fine tool  This was a question about the need/desire for revisions based on failed expectation on weight loss alone (not post WLS medical issues or malfunctions) I see a ton of post (sadly mostly VSG based) where people are very freshly out of surgery wondering when they can cheat, or 2 years out of surgery wondering why they never made it to goal , or going for revisions to RNY to finally make to goal after regain My questions was are people going for VSG to avoid dumping to cheat (vs malabsorption for medical valid reasons) OR were they not advised that the best surgeries for their particular cases would have been the more aggressive surgery OR did they have no honest clue about the statistical weightloss/ regain rates ? I see a lot of good complex answers, thank you. I also see that a lot of Doctors are promoting VSG as their first choice surgery. Now I know. There are complex reasons why revisions are seemingly on the rise. Thanks everyone!!!!
  7. Im in a similar situation. I have not had surgery yet, as i will have my 2nd consult soon. I have gerd, have had it for years and when the surgeon and I discussed it he said, " well if you get reflux you always can convert to bypass". I was,a bit frustated with that comment and, I said, "No, at 58 years old im only doing this once". He said 1/3 of sleeve patients will still have gerd, and he has been seeing sleeve patients 3 to 4 years out with severe gerd and going the revision route because its very bad and happens daily. Thats why I decided the bypass route. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  8. GreenTealael

    WHY?

Most good surgeons will suggest the more aggressive surgery (better outcomes, less revision/failure rates factors into their records) lazy ones will do what's comfortable for them. You have to ask for a lower level. I just wonder why if someone knows they have maladaptive eating practices (binging, purging, etc) , tendency to graze, very high start weight/very low goal weight why get a half measure? Why not go DS, where you have the highest rate of loss, highest level of malabsorption to combat all of the behavior? DS not available, cool RNY second best for your situation ( and of course this is all situational and hypothetical) But why with a history of binging not well controlled through meds/therapy, very high starting weight, lack of support, stressful job, would anyone go for VSG let alone band or balloon?

Horizon NJ Health, 12 month wait?

I just got out of the ER...no slippage or erosion. Will I still get a revision by NJ Horizon Health
  10. I am looking for some data regarding GERD and the Rny Gastric Bypass for Post Op's. You can be a virgin stomach or a revision patient, if you are a revision, please reply in the comments as well. I am revising from Sleeve to Bypass because my Surgeon feels it will be best bet to cure my GERD. I have it extremely bad and even if it helped to make it better it would be a relief for me. Thanks in advance!
  11. I had my band placed on in April, 2006. The first year was a breeze and I lost a ton of weight. In month 13 of my journey, I was overfilled and slipped my band. Since then, I seemed to have developed an intolerance for my band. I have slipped it twice, constantly choke on my food, and have been miserable. On April 2nd, I will be revising from the lapband to the gastric sleeve. Dr. Aceves will be doing the revision in Mexico. I have decided to chronicle my experience here, so others that have band issues and decide to convert can have an idea of what to expect. I spoke with Nina, the patient coordinator yesterday and we now have everything scheduled. I am excited and nervous all at the same time. I will leave here on April 1st, have my surgery on the 2nd and return home on the 5th. My mother will be accompanying me on the trip. Nina advised me that Dr. Aceves is concerned about swelling due to the problems I have had with my band. Therefore, I am going this week for a complete unfill. Then, seven days before my surgery, I have to go on a complete liquid diet. This should alleviate any swelling issues and the chances of having to have the band removed and then go back at a later date for the sleeve. It is very important to me that I get this all done at the same time. I am looking forward to this, and feel like I have been given a new opportunity at life. To those who have helped me to be able to get the sleeve, thank you. Because of you, I now am looking forward to enjoying life again, instead of living in misery. I will update as I go through this journey.

    African American Sleevers

So happy to have stumbled upon this thread. I was originally scheduled to get the lap band & recently had a change of heart after reading some posts from others that had to have the revision. I am so excited to be getting sleeved on Dec. 17th. You all have done such a great job with your weight loss and I cannot wait to be a sleever & start reaching my own milestones.

Hello everyone! I had revision surgery from band to sleeve on August 12, 2013. I was so happy to find this forum! Down 42lbs and can wait to reach my goal weight of 150lbs. Thanks for this open communication!!
  14. I have known people to go through a lot just a few days after banding, and not dislodge the port. I would guess it is inflamation on the inside, like the muscle it is stitched into being outraged at the intrusion! BUT----as I state, that is just a guess. I would call and ask how much pain at the port site is considered normal, and what to do for it. You paid the Dr. to treat you, calling to ask him a question about your health and welfare following a major surgery is not too much to ask of him. Does taking something like liquid Tylenol help at all? I wouldn't take anything stronger until I talked to the Dr. you don't want to mask a pain he should know about. I had a friend and her husband fly to MX for banding surgery several months before I went. He got air sick coming home, and heaved for over 4 hours! Then as he exited the plane, he got dizzy, and slipped and fell down the last 4 steps! We live in a small area, we still at the local airport, exit out the stairs! He called his Dr. immediately, who told him to sip very slowly some gatorade, and water. He slept, and settled down, and recovered fine, although he had some impressive bruising! He did worry for awhile he had pulled his port loose, he said it hurt everytime he twisted or moved at the waist. His surgeon assured him it would be fine, and even in the worst case scenario, it would not hurt anything if it had, it could be revised as an outpatient, but it would not hurt the band itself. He is a big guy like 6'7" and he has lost in the neighborhood of 150 pounds now! He was very lucky at the heavier weight not to break anything when he fell! I would take it easy, try seeing if either hot (heating pad) or ice packs, would ease it any. Make as many observations as you can to share with your Dr. if you find it necessary to call. Keep us posted on how you feel! Good Luck! Kat

    Before and After Pics

Last yr I bought a shirt from Target. It was an XL in women's. All women know how much it can suck to buy womens clothing. 9 times out of 10 a XL in one brand can be a M in another. This is why I generally just buy men's t-shirts. Though I know I wear an XL in Old Navy's women's shirts. That being said, I bought this shirt and when I got home it was about 3 sizes too small. I sadly shoved it in a drawer and forgot about it. I'm almost a mth out from my revision. My GERD is completely gone and the weightloss is a huge bonus. I found the shirt today and put it on. And it fit!

    Before and After Pics

I came across probably the only picture I have of me at my highest weight (the day after my VSG surgery in 2013). I'm pretty sure I deleted all the others. I avoided the camera for many years. So I put them side by side with my revision surgery (9/2019) and me at my current weight. It really opened my eyes though. And while I still might not be "skinny" I'm finally happy. It took awhile to get here. I didn't ever get down to my goal weight with VSG. I was more concerned with getting the weight off and keeping it off without regaining. And I would always either lose weight or maintain. Now that I know I can keep the weight off, I can finally focus on my goal weight. I'd be perfectly happy only losing another 20ish lbs. My goal was never to be super skinny but to be healthy and able to keep up with my son. To take him camping, hiking and fishing every summer like I did as a kid. Every time I see this picture at my largest I'm still shocked I was ever that size. HW: 326lbs CW: 192lbs

What surgery did you have? What complications, may I ask? P.S. your arms are Amazing! Thanks for the compliment on my arms...it's funny though, I think that's my worst feature, lots of excess skin...I think that might have just been great photography! Lol! Anyways my complications are almost too many to list: large hematoma with drain tube one week after sleeve surgery, severe reflux and GERD, 3 strictures with dilations, 2 hiatal hernias needing surgery, a myelotomy surgery, revision to bypass surgery, central line put in for TPN, then finally 2 weeks ago a jejunostomy feeding tube put in for nutrition. Whew!So you had complications with both the bypass and sleeve...

hello!! Congrats on you weight loss u look great how long u had surgery? I had my surgery dec 4th 2014. The first surgery I had was rny and I had complications (extreme pain) because my intestines weren't put right. My surgeon had to revise to a sleeve on March 16th 2015. So I had two surgeries and had to go through all the stages 2x. I am 8 pounds from goal in six months due to this. It's been tough but totally worth it in every way!!

    Attention ! Australian Sleevers

Hi kelliv, I am having a Bypass for a couple of reasons: I have had 2 x Lapbands which have slipped and I am having the second one removed in 2 days time. I have also had my Gallbladder removed during that time. I injured my back and both shoulders at work and I have had reconstructive surgery to my foot and today I was told that I have acute arthritis in that foot which I can hardly stand on at the moment, so exercise is going to be difficult post op. My Surgeon and I discussed my options and he feels that when he does the WLS it will be the 4th stomach operation that I have had, this means that I have a much higher risk of developing Scar tissue around my stomach, I need to lose at least 50kg and his statistics show that a Bypass should be more successful than a sleeve, he believes that if I have a 'sleeve' he will have to revise it in 2 years so he recommended doing a Bypass as the first option, I have a complicated medical history which includes lung clots last year and I am 57. So, after weighing up all the pro's and con's we decided that I would have a Bypass. I really like this forum and there doesn't seem to be a similar one for 'Bypassers' so I hang out in here. Hope you don't mind???? You all have amazing stories and insight into WLS and I have learnt a lot from this forum.
  22. Hi all u Aussies! I'm from the Gold Coast. I have had a band for 14 yrs and am having it revised on Tuesday! Omg I'm do excited! I'm actually going to Mexico! I went to the doctors here and they wanted $25000 to do the revision! I got an early release of my super and I'm getting it done in Mexico for a total of $6000 including flights for me and my partner. I have done extensive research and I'm not worried at all. I suppose because I have had surgery in Bangkok also I sort of know what to expect. I'm glad I found some more Aussies on here!

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Katy - I had the same trouble with my ticker. Alex had to help me get it into my signature block. I was following all the directions, using the correct "BB" code, but kept getting an "invalid file" response. Once he fixed it for me I've been able to revise it and bring it back in with no trouble. For pictures in your note - I clicked on the "go advanced" button in the quick reply screen. It gave me the option to attach files (under "additional options"), "manage attachments" - then it allows you to browse your pictures and select one, then upload to the note. I hope that works for you. The picture I have uploaded is of me holding my brand new grandson - 23 months ago today. DD is in the background wanting him back... (I sure hope this worked! When I previewed the post I had to click on the link to see the pic...)
