  1. I know the feeling - in pondering dates I keep saying nope can't have that one it's too close to my daughters B'Day 10/2 - she passed away 12/2004. Then there is 10/14 - nope that's when my daddy died but I still have a couple clearances to go through so were shooting for 10/26 or 11/3 don't thing I have any issues with either of those dates. But it's funny how we let dates control us. My daughter did it too - she was scheduled for a Csection on 10/14 (this has been a few years ago) she was exited about having a date for her son to be born - but then she got home and was telling me the date - it hit her - she said oh mom, I can't do that date - she jumped right on the phone and requested the day before or after - so my grandson was born 10/13/2004. I agree with the poster above that you hearing your song was a sign...He's watching over you and I am sure supporting you - he will be there holding your hand until you wake up - Take care and let us know how you are doing...

    Week 19 Post Op

Another week down and another pound lost. Not as much as I would have liked but still a pound is a pound. I have been struggling a little this week with eating. Not in the amount that I can eat but in what I can eat. I have had a few things come right back up after eating. I am not sure if it's been the food itself, maybe not chewing enough, taking to big of bites, or eating to fast. Probably some of all. LOL Still it's been taking getting some used to with the tightness of the band but I am getting there. On another note my wife and I have gotten to the point with our walking that we both feel it's not a weight loss tool for us. We are still walking and will continue to walk largely because we really have grown to enjoy our evening walks as a family and it's a solid part of our daily routine. But now we both feel we have to add in additional exercise into our daily routine. What we're looking at now and trying is that right after our walk we put our son down for the night and then she heads over to the gym and I do my DVD workout. We are making sure to get all of our workout in before settling down for the night. Additionally I am thinking about trying to get up earlier in the morning to get another workout in. The hardest part right now is getting my bum out of bed early enough. So we will see. So totals for the week are.... This week 1 pound lost Current Weight - 381 lbs Loss Since Surgery - 61 lbs (19 weeks) Total Weight Loss - 104 lbs

    Sleeve or lap band

Do not get the band!!!! The research says if you do your chances of another surgery are about 50% by year 10 and continue to go up thereafter because of complications. I personally never would choose a surgery with a 50% long term complication rates that are severe enough to require surgery. Unfortunately that data was not available when I got mine so I became a statistic and had my band revised to bypass last year. Love my bypass.

    The Morning After

I wasn't in Onederland, but was a lower BMIer and I came out 10 lbs. heavier...it's the IV fluids and all the swelling (I looked pregnant). BTW, get a Rx for nausea if you don't have one...vomiting on a new band would be bad (and I've used my little pills twice since banding...don't want to be calling the doc in the middle of the night!). Hope the boys and you are better soon! -BG -CONGRATULATIONS BANDER!!!!

    11 days post-op, a few questions!

My doctor said no gum for one year post surgery due to the fact that you could swallow it and the fact when you chew gum it gets the juices going in your stomach. I too had trouble with protein shakes, just had my surgery 10/14/09. Someone suggested adding some peanut butter especially with the vanilla powder, just blend and it was pretty tasty. They also sell protein shots: Profect, there are 25 g of protein in each shot. You can drink it straight or add to water and crystal light. They are a little expensive about $2.50 a piece but you get a good amount of protein. They sell them at GNC and some Walmart's.

    Insurance won't review file-Help

I have been working on my file since beginning of September and it was finally submitted to BCBS TX 10/22. Today they informed me that they won't even review my file regardless of my multiple comorbidities due to exclusion. My Dr. said they will appeal and they are positive I will win on approval. However, the Insurance company states nothing will change their decision. I have been fighting my weight forever, so waiting won't change much. But am I fighting a battle with them that I can't win? Any help or information is much appreciated. WAITING.......

  9. I had Dr Eid. Was sleeved on 10/5. At my post op appt which was day 9 he said I could start mushy foods. Was a little nervous since it wasn't the 2 weeks recommended for Clear liquids but it's been fine! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  10. Hi. My name is Stacie and I live in Ohio. I am almost 39. I have three daughters, one is 19 and the twins are 10. I was always a pretty chunky kid and slimmed down as a teen. Of course, I thought i was a cow. I remember gaining weight again in 1994 and I have been gaining ever since. It was 1994 that I bought a size 12 pair of pants...and I am now in an 18W. Ugh. About four years ago, I lost 40 pounds, but I have since gained 50 back. I weigh 35 pounds more now that I did when I had my twins in 1997. That is sooo sad. I am going to college to be an Occupational Therapy Assistant and I will start doing clinicals full-time in March and I will graduate in June. This is why I decided I need to get this weight thing under control. I have been doing 8 hour clinicals once a week and I am about to die. My back is killing me, my ankles are killing me and I am ready to cut my feet OFF. By the time I walk out to my car, I want to cry. How can I do that 40 hours a week? I was first introduced to Occupational Therapy after my mom almost died from having Gastric Bypass Surgery. (seriously) After she got out of her "almost" dead state, she went to a nursing home and that is where I saw OT for the first time. They had to re-teach her everything. I saw what a great job they did with her, and I knew that is what I had to do with my life. Get people better and healthy again. BUT, how can I do that when I can hardly walk because my joints hurt too bad? Obviously, I am NOT going the gastric bypass route. So, I am thinking the lap band may be the best direction for me. I am sure my insurance wont pay for it. They hardly cover anything. So, I am going to be a self pay...I have been doing NOTHING but research for a week and I don't know what to do. I am broke (full-time student) but, I do not want to end up with the problems like my mom has (brain damaged, and more.) Any suggestions? That is all for my introduction, I guess.

    SHOTS

I had the shots in the hospital and then I had to give myself the blood thinner shots for 10 days.
  12. Banded on 10/24 and no restriction. First fill on Dec. 1st. Turkey for sure a 1/3 cup of mashed potatoes 1/3 cup of stuffing veggie one roll, not a butter fan, so all good there. I'm sure later I'll have one piece of SF chocolate pudding pie.
  13. Even with a BMI of 55 my insurance wouldnt cover my band. SO I decided to sell some stock and become a self pay. It was THAT important to be and I believed in the procedure. Since I was a self pay I seriously considered going to Mexico. MY husband and I did the research... It would have cost me about 8k including air fare for my and my husband to go. The hotel was paid for my the Mexican clinic. I called 7 Drs in central FL and not ONE would touch me for fills. The only place I could get a fill locally if I had a mexican band was to go to a USAfills type of place. The fills were $125 a pop. Here in the states I interviewed 3 Drs who did the procedure at 3 different hospitals. My Dr of choice had a "deal" with the hospital.... his fee, hospital stay, pre op testing as well as pre op Optifast, 3 months of free post op visits including fills for 6 months was 10k. 5k upfront then the hospital allowed the rest 5k to be paid with no interest over 2 years. I did the math...thought long and hard about the comfort of my Dr being 10 minutes away and opted to stay home and be banded locally. It had nothing to do with the quality of work in Mexico. It was purely a financial decision over the long run. That said... after being banded 2 months and made 2 payment of $200 ea to the hospital they called me and said if I could pay the balance within 30 days they would slash it 50%. I scraped it together and of course took them up on the deal....All of a sudden my band cost $7500!!!

    Psych Evaluation.

Mine seemed a little involved as compared to some of the responses, so I guess it varies a good bit. There were questionnaires to complete before the appt. Mostly about my weight history which it was a little difficult (impossible) for me to remember all the times I have lost or gained over 10 lbs and why...because I'm 51 and have been a yo yo dieter for most of my life! At the appt I had another 457 questions on the computer (MMPI-2). My copy of the report says they used the following assessment instruments: MMPI-2, clinical interview, Shipley institute of living scale, beck depression inventory, state trait anxiety inventory, 3 factor eating questionnaire and a wt and lifestyle inventory. It all took 4 hours which included about 30-40 mins sitting in the waiting room. The psychologist said they are looking to see if you can understand the risks/benefits of surgery, have some type of support available, current or hx of addiction, etc. The surgeon let me choose from several providers in the area. I looked for someone close so if I need to see them again in the journey, I could. I don't think I will, but you never know. The article they gave me to read before the appt recommend asking the psychologist what they thought might a challenge for me after we talked, etc. The article also recommended asking for a copy of their report. I asked about the challenges and she said she thought I was a good candidate for WLS. Said, in general, people sometimes struggle if they have complications or if they did not fully understand the dietary restrictions/requirements. Fair enough. She offered to send me a copy of the report. It came in the mail about 2 weeks later. It seemed to be a good reflection of what we talked about at the appt. I guess it's human nature to worry a little about a "psychological" evaluation, but dont sweat it.
  15. Hi there, I am new and on the fast track here...just decided this week to go ahead with surgery, and already have first appt. next week and tentative surgery date for next month. I will have MANY questions, but in the meantime I thought I would introduce myself by repeating the "story" I wrote for my profile, below...... I am have read enough of others' stories to see that mine falls right in line....I always struggled with my weight but was able to maintain a reasonable size (from 140-160 lbs) with diet and excercise until I had my first child at age 29. I gained 60 lbs with that pregnancy and was never able to lose most of it no matter what I did. Three more pregnancies and babies followed....and more weight. I am now at an all time high, 231, which gives me a BMI of 40. Now, that first baby is 12 years old. I have been dieting, exercising, and repeating the cycle of failure over and over and over again for twelve long, hard years. I finally realized I simply cannot do this anymore: it is not working. I lose 10 lbs only to gain back 20. I am missing so much from my former, healthier, thinner life -- like running longer distances -- that I used to do and now just cannot do. It makes me tremendously sad. So, I just made the call to a Dr. in Denver and have my first appointment next week, during which I will do all of the psych and nutrition testing (I am not even sure what all - pretty much everything I need!) I should have a surgery date in September - just a month away! So fast! I am paying myself (my insurance has a blanket exclusion for WLS), so things are able to move rapidly. I am just excited beyond belief. I have much to learn in the next month, and hope to gain from the wisdom shared here.
  16. You need to call your doctor and get them to check you out. I was banded in April (4/10) - I had a lot of port site pain myself. Not knowing what to expect I let it go believing it was normal recovery pain. I went for my first fill at the end of May and found out my port had flipped. My pain was from the stitches being ripped and the port moving around. I wish I would have called when I suspected something was wrong - which was week one. I was late on my fills because of revision surgery. It delayed my progress - but everything has been corrected. You'd rather be safe than sorry.

    An Update On Me

K so I was sleeved on 9/19 and had actually gained a little weight prior to surgery and started at 262. Yes I know probably not a good idea to gain weight before surgery but I wanted to make sure I ate stuff I knew i would not be able to eat for a while:) anyways I ended up with some complications first with an infection in my drain tract, then an issue with " white foamy vomit" as my surgeon calls it, and dehydration. I have been back to the hospital 3 times since surgery because of dehydration alone. I was also not able to eat any puréed foods. I was put on a puréed diet once I left the hospital. It ended up getting to the point to where I could not drink anything without throwing up. And for whatever reason I felt better ..out of the blue. No more nausea no pain nothing. I have been able to eat only a very tiny amount but at least I am able to get some foods in and my fluid intake has improved. I am not anywhere near where I need to be but it has improved so much. I am hoping it gets better everyday from now. I am supposed to be moved to soft foods starting 10/15 so hopefully I will be able to tolerate it. My weight loss so far has amazed me but I am also sure part of it has to do with the fact that I have not had any foods and hardly any fluids but I went from 262 to 230 as of this morning. That is 32 lbs in2 weeks and 4 days. Just feeling better and wanted everyone to know

    Favorites!

HI there...I'm 10 months post-op... Vitamins and other supplements Bariatric Advantage chewables (don't give up after the first few tries - you get used to the taste), essential fatty acids, Vitamin D Protein shakes unjury vanilla and chocolate Splendor (try sugar free Torani syrups to mix in - they have tons of different flavors) Skin products for sagging Nivea Skin Firming Body Lotion (honestly, I don't know if it helped, but it made me feel like I was doing something productive and my skin is much softer) hair products for hair loss Biotin and Folic Acid (approved by doc), Nioxin shampoo & conditioner, Toppik (to cover the hair loss - works just like their on-line videos) My doc says there's nothing you can do to stop the loss, but you can help it come back.

    Now, That Wasn't So Bad...!

I'm only 10 days out but feel much the same way. It's always safer to expect the worst, so I completely expected lots of pain, nausea/vomiting, difficulty eating, etc. I actually feel pretty great, though my energy is definitely suffering. If it weren't for my crazy restriction, I might think they opened me up, then closed me, without doing anything. I was joking around with my surgeon post-op saying that I was very restricted, but other than that had no "proof" he had earned his money. I enjoyed his response: I just gave you a really pretty sleeve.

    my crap

Ur only 7 weeks out so ur weight lose is good but u need to get a plan when it comes to eating...it's not easy after surgery. If u need a crunch get some RAW nuts they r not as bad for u as other crunchy foods but get like a 2 or 3 oz container n thats it NO grazing as it will become a bad habit for u and hurt ur progress in the long run. I am not a big water person either so I drink tea w Splenda or crystal light with my water. Although since I've been exercising more I have been craving water. I feel like I did not get and am still not getting the guidance I thought I would after surgery but I have found ways to get my Protein as I know that is the most important. Surgery 9/19...down 53 lbs...started at size 20-22 down to a 12-13!

    Very Discouraged

Hey guys, I just want to see if there is anyone out there that has had little to no weight loss with the LAP-BAND®...I was banded 12.1.09...I was 296 and as of today 5/9/10 I weigh 272....a total loss of 24lbs in 5 months...I feel like such a freaking failure! I no longer have the same surgeon...he made me feel like something he flushed down the toilet...I know I have a 10cc band, but for some reason, he wouldn't tell me how much I have in my band....I have been working out lately and I have noticed a little difference...I have a new surgeon that I will start seeing June1st...what exactly is restriction supposed to feel like? I can eat more than a cup of food and still be hungry...the only difference I feel since I had the surgery is the feeling of certain foods getting "stuck"....I don't eat as much as I used to before I got the band....so, that's a good thing...but if there is anyone out there that has experienced the same thing, or has any pointer, plz help me. Thanks

    How did you quit smoking?

I quit Jan. 3, 2011 after smoking two packs a day for 32 years. When I was younger and went out drinking, I smoked more sometimes. I signed on to Quit.net and they send you an anniversary email each month. The Quit Smoking Calculator gives the amount you would have smoked, the time you've extended your life, and the money saved. On Oct. 3rd, my 10 month quit date, I had not smoked 10, 872 cigarettes! OMG! I was shocked! I had smoked millions in my lifetime! I bought one 10 ct box of nicorette gum, just to get me through the first three days. It does burn, but it helped. There have been a few stessful times I thought about having a cigarette, but nothing I couldn't control by simply changing my thoughts. I did try the Chantix six years ago, but got terrible arthritis in one week. My fingers were swollen and I could barely walk. I am one of thousands of people who cannot take Chantix. It has several health risks so be sure and read the side effects.
  23. For those of you that have undergone surgery and/or are still thinking about it, what are the top things that would come to mind (whether legitimate or not) that caused you to hold off on making the final and ultimate commitment to proceed? For me in prior years it has been the following (and please note that I'm not saying these are logical or rationale concerns and many are excuses...there is no right/wrong answer here). Assume that there are NO insurance/financial concerns. Also, some of the concerns/thoughts listed are still true for me today (namely #8, #5, etc.) 1) Oh Dear God, they slice away chunks of my stomach (bypass & sleeve) and it is not reversible (in case of the sleeve) 2) Surely instead of going 'under the knife' and the risks it will involve, I can commit to FINALLY losing the weight on my own once and for all 3) I'll never get to enjoy/eat 'XYZ' again OR I can only eat 2 TBSP's of 'XYZ' if I do this (rationale side says why wouldn't 2 TBSP's be enjoyable and also that food is 'fuel' not 'sport') 4) I'll never be able to have a drink again (FYI - I RARELY drink so this was kinda silly for me, but it was a thought) 5) What if something goes terribly wrong (often tied up with the thought 'what if I die') 6) The process takes so long, there is 'too much' I have to do...see multiple doctors, lose weight before, yada, yada, yada 7) What will I do with all of the loose skin (this one makes me snort out loud...don't ask me why I thought having 'loose skin' as opposed to 'fat filled skin' was an issue) 8) The side effects/issues related - dumping, malabsorption (sp?), etc. 9) My family/friends/coworkers thinks it's crazy risk...or crazy idea...or that I'm just too 'lazy' to actually "work at it" (and part of me used to be mad at myself for having to consider 'resorting to such drastic measures') 10) Regarding sleeve - keep reading we don't have history on the gastric sleeve like we do on gastric bypass, what IF something really bad shows up over time that we don't know now?

    Any Regrets?

I had total buyer's remorse on days 2-5 post op. I felt lousy from the anesthesia the first three days and when I got home from the hospital, I was overwhelmed by having to keep to sipping schedule. I just couldn't wrap my head around what I had done to myself at that point. I also had major head hunger for the first week. But, by the end of the week things began to get better each day. I feel amazing at 10 weeks post op. I'm thrilled with my weight loss and I'm thrilled with my sleeve. It is a magnificent tool for weight loss. At this point, I only regret not having done it sooner. Good luck to you!
  25. I was banded on Monday, Oct 3rd! Yay! No problems with surgery! Yay! Haven't taken pain meds since Tuesday, the 4th! Yay! Ok, the issue is all this bloating with gas. It makes it hard for me to take in my liquids because it just makes me more miserable than I already am. I don't get anywhere near the required amount of fluids because I'm miserable. Yesterday, with permission from my doc, I started with GasX and Milk of Magnesia-finally-RELIEF!!!! However, here I am again bloated and miserable. It doesn't matter how much I rub my stomach (in an effort to get the gas to go down-if you know what I mean) or how much I walk-no relief. What gives?? Is this how things are gonna be?? Is there any real relief w/o the assistance of meds in my near future? I'm going back to work next week, I don't want to walk around looking 10 months pregnant! Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!
