  1. Another thing about a small weight gain like that....are they counting those that became pregnant after the sleeve? Because that's definitely a 22 lb or more gain....
  2. My kids are older. When I had my surgery, they were late teens/early 20s. My oldest is a slim, but not necessarily healthy habits person. My youngest is more prone to weight gain. I did enlist them in my transformation in the sense of i had a very hard time resisting certain foods so we came up with the "Carb drawer" which i simply don't open but has some foods they enjoy and want. They don't tend to shop with me or anything like that but they observe that I eat small portions and often on an appetizer sized plate. On the rare occasion that they prepare and serve up food, they always put mine on a small plate - I don't even ask. My youngest who is now 22 told me early on that he wanted to improve his eating habits and has lost weight too. (He was never obese, but is a big guy and has always been prone to some extra weight). I think my modeling of eating behavior has influenced him in a very positive way. My kids don't really like doing "active" stuff with me like they did when they were younger. However, last several years the mothers day tradition is going for a hike, not a big ole brunch. The oldest in particular hates hiking, but he does it in recognition of doing something that makes ME feel good. I don't think my exercise/activity habits have really reasonated with either of them - as they are young enough they only like to do fun stuff for exercise! I wouldn't do this with younger kids, but with them I do sometimes bring up my weight loss, how I am still working at maintaining it etc. I do it because they both live with me again and I find that touching on my struggles improves our relationship. Example, if i am going through a time of feeling a bit more emotional around food - I might mention it so they know I am going through something. IT makes them more aware of my possible behavior and consequences - not that they need to do anything. The thing that shocked them both was bringing out my before picture after I had been at goal for awhile. It was deeply upsetting to them because they didn't remember how I looked. It wasn't just the fat, it was that you could see my physical pain and misery in that picture and I think they felt terrible that they didn't even remember it. i told them it was okay to not remember it, but it was a reminder of how much I have changed. That led to the conversation about how much I have changed in terms of interactions with them and others - all very positive I might add!

    Moodiness

I take Wellbutrin for depression and ADD. It helps concentration and helps me feel less groggy. It's one of the few antidepressants that don't mess with your sex drive, doesn't cause weight gain, and actually decreases hunger. It does help mild anxiety, but can make it worse at higher doses. I've mostly relied on this med to relieve seasonal depression and don't rely on it so much spring--fall.
  5. I am 19 months post op from DS surgery. I’m SO happy with my weight loss. I’ve been fluctuating between 140-144 for a while now (months) this week out of the blue with no change in my diet (which could definitely be better) or exercise (which is always good) I’m up to 145 146 148. Should I be worried this is a wall I’m hitting? Wil I be 175 by the end of the year? Not that I’m emotionally scared from my pre surgey life or anything ha! Or is this just normal and keep on truckin’ and expect to be back in the 140-144 zone in a week or so. Argh so nerve wracking!

How Have You Changed Since Lap Band Surgery?

I am back to enjoying myself! I know that my weight loss is under my control! Before lapband, I would try to lose and get bored and gain whatever I lost back. Now, I know, that even any weight gain or loss is within my control! Karen

    What motivates you?

I thought it would be good to see what others use as motivation. Of course the scale is a big motivation, but I like using other things as well. My goal weight is just too far away for me to even imagine it as a reality some day. Examples of things I use as motivation:  I keep a piece of clothing near the front of the closet that I would like to fit in next. One that is just a little too tight to wear in public. I try it on once a week and when it fits, wear it ! I stopped wearing my wedding rings a couple years ago because of my weight gain. I try them on once a week. They are still a little too tight for comfort, but when they fit, I will wear them again ! I love my rings and will be so happy to have them on again ! I am currently in "Banster Hell" , but am trying to take off 2 more pounds before my next fill appointment ( when I'm sure they will have me step on the scale) on the 25th. Please share things you use as motivation.

    Weight gain...

What the heck? I had gastric bypass on jan 8th and have lost 10 pounds already. When I got on the scale this morning I'd gained 2 pounds. Nothing I ate yesterday stayed in my system, I tossed my cookies each time I ate. How do you gain when you're tossing you're cookies! I don't get it.

"I eat healthy"... but i'm still fat

Yeah.....I'm with elcee on this one. My weight didn't come on from the drive thru. For the most part, I ate healthy. But the snacking in between meals; especially after dinner, coupled with the lack of exercise = weight gain. I love fries, but only ate them on occasion. When restaurants starting putting the calorie content on the menu, it was a VERY rude awakening! That salad I love is 800 calories. Add the bread & butter, and a few cookies after dinner, I'm already calorically into the next hemisphere! That doesn't take into account the other two meals of the day. Yep, not everyone eats fast food and bags of chips. But Bayougirl, I totally agree that SO many people who post, are in complete and utter denial!!
  10. FROM THE ARTICLE Re: Why dieting results in weight gain & will 5:2 be differe by carorees » 06 Feb 2013, 19:34 Hi Dominic I think the issue is not with the basic equation, which is of course correct, but that for most people who have lost weight the biological drive to go into positive energy balance is hard to overcome because our appetites are increased while the energy metabolised is lowered. Facing a lifetime of dietary restriction, most people fall off the wagon either intentionally (because the diet is too restrictive) or accidentally (because they did not realize that their energy use is lower than it should be for their height and weight). What happens as a result is that they not only regain the weight lost but a bit more because of the upward drift of the set point. Looking at the population of dieters it is not the weight loss that is the issue, it is maintaining the healthy weight afterwards for most people. The fact that the 5:2 lifestyle is sustainable indefinitely and the potential for it to have a different effect metabolically than traditional methods of calorie restriction gives us hope that it really will turn out to be the 'one'! I LIKE THE LAST PART!
  11. I really appreciate all of you responding to me so quickly. How long have you all been banded? Have any of you had any weight gain? And by the way, I am post menopausal! Tell me about some of your experiences. Gratefully, Cindy

  13. I am 4 weeks out, the first 2 weeks I lost 27 lbs, on my 4 week checkup I gained a 1.5 lbs. How did this happen I can't even get hardly any food or drink in. Anyone else have this happen or any suggestions?
  14. https://www.sweathelp.org/hyperhidrosis-treatments/treatment-overview.html Since weight gain didn't cause the problem, weight loss can't be expected to fix it. But if additional weight has piled normal sweating on top of the hyperhidrosis, then at least weight loss could help that aspect. Good luck!
  15. Actually there is something called starvation mode. I actually had my two week post op today and met with my surgeon and nutritionist and they brought up starvation mode when I complained about my stop in weight loss. When you workout you gain muscle so that causes the stall and possible weight gain of a couple pounds before you actually start losing weight. Don't add to or take away from your diet with consulting your team first. Trust me that's what I did and I am medical for over 15yrs. Just keep following your diet and you will get past this no problem. By the way 15lbs is awesome congrats. Remember the small victories and don't be discouraged
  16. I am 16 months out and reached my goal of 150 May 25, 2011 (9 months post op). My lowest weight has been 144 and I've peaked at 148. When I peaked at 148 I cut out a few treats for 3 days and dropped to 144 yikes. I want to stay 145-148 if at all possible, so far, so good. My last weigh in on Saturday was 145. I do not diet at this point. I do not exercise (Although I need to get my butt moving, for my hearts sake). BUT with this said, I've heard that people can and do gain weight back. Check out the weight gained after sleeve in the front post section.

14 months out and realllly struggling

@@kyleebean This is a reality for all of us. Weight gain can happen. Bad habits can come right back into our lives. When you see yourself slipping (holiday's are the worst) It's time to get back on the horse. You have been successful.... 105 pounds down freaking fantastic. Do what has worked for you. Beating yourself up is not doing you any good. Be gentle with yourself. Try some positive self talk. You are stronger than you are giving yourself credit for.

You face looks like a donut

No, that's not how a loving marriage is. When I met my husband, I weighed less than 100 pounds. Due to a hormonal disorder, I gained up to a high of 278. On a five foot body. Was everything always perfect? No. Sometimes he got angry at the cause of the weight gain and the fact that it seemed there was nothing we could do. He was there for me then and he's been there for me all through this RNY process. And he's my biggest cheerleader post-op. And I'm his. That's what a loving marriage is.

    Stomach Stretched?

That's my biggest fear! I'm one week postop and I discussed this with my surgeon after surgery. He stated that after a year or two it's common and normal to see weight gain. Some of the reasons are: relaxed exercise regimen after losing the weight and stretching of the pouch by overeating. His advice was if weight gain occurs, pump up your exercise regimen, make sure your getting enough protein, vitamins and sleep and lastly, as already suggested go back to the post op diet for a week. Good luck!
  20. yeah, seriously dieting to gain weigh is like shooting yourself with a bow and arrow, not likely to happen. If you wantthe no fail weight gain? drink a few full flavored beers especially darks. those will get you there in no time ohand to help those go down, try Fettuccini alfredo. youll get there in no time.
  21. I have gained a bit of weight back, and I have to admit that it's hard not to freak out completely. I was reading up on post wls weight gain and came across this procedure. Have any of you used it? I am thinking it would be very extreme for the amount of weight I've gained. But I am curious.... http://gastro.ucla.edu/site.cfm?id=321
  22. Yeah me( waving for attention) & I think I do have grounds to. 4 months, probably stalled because of higher calorie count of.my TPN, woke up this AM to phone alarm going off, I don't even use it, must have been one of Tomkitten's bright ideas. He's still asleep, it didn't wake HIM up. Upper right chest pain, high surface , over top of boob, now what could THAT be? Last time I drug me to the ER I was told it was atypical costochodritis but that was even left near the sternum and I got poo pooed, couldn't even have a cardiac event if I tried. Really this today feels more like a muscle pull. Not right area for my,ulcer pain, that is right subcostal classically. Well I do have an appointment with surgeon Tuesday morning, if no better suppose I could mention it to him, he'll probably say " Not My Problem" and of course it isn't, but it's more a bother than something that will kill me. But I am having a PLOM moment, stands for 0oor Little Old Me, but I'm sure once I see sunlight I'll get up and try facing this Monday Morn. The surgery did stop the perilous weight gain, I'm not gaining any more, actually at a mid point, down more 100 pounds from High Weight but 75- 80 pounds to goal, still on token liquids and TPN for nutrition and to maintain my life and let my beleagured GI system heal. But Marching forward to Good Health?, nope, Don't Think So!
  23. I have stayed at the same weight for over 4 weeks. The scale varies very little. I joined a Zumba class and add modest treadmill but have yet to see their impact. I will have my 3 month check up a bit late, maybe at 3.5 months out, so my concerns might be answered then, but is there a chance that this is the best it gets? Could I have already passed the honeymoon stage in first 8 weeks? I would have laughed at a post such as this if I had not written it myself.... While not stellar with diet, calories are under 1000, good protein and water intake. No weight gain and no weight loss... I began with a starting weight of 182 and have been at 152. I am short. Is this a stall, or plateau, or the best I can be? Lots of hair loss in the last month and fingernails are thin. Thanks for your input!

    Question for veterans

I'm only 4 months post-op and am doing fine with the sleeve. Love it. I've lost 63 pounds thus far. I think the sleeve is a big advantage to those of us who've struggled lifelong with overweight and obesity. But here's the big BUT ... 40-50% of people who have WLS (including those who are sleeved) gain back more than half of the weight they lost. So clearly they are able to cheat the sleeve big-time. And I haven't heard of anyone who's had the sleeve who says they've never had to put some energy post-op into maintaining their weight loss. Some people who post here at BP have said that 1, 2, 3 years out they are struggling with weight gain. And during the holidays some here have complained about gaining weight (even during their weight loss phases) because they indulged too much in holiday treats. So if "being 'full' has never stopped [you when] the food tastes really good," you surely could figure out post-op how to eat more than you should. But just because you can doesn't mean that you will. The sleeve is only one of many tools you could acquire to help you live healthier, lose weight, maintain your weight, and live a healthy lifestyle. The other available tools are family and friends you invite to support you, psychological counseling and coaching, support groups (in real life and online), ongoing support from your bariatric and medical team, exercise and physical activities and resources, a job/work/career that supports your new lifestyle (or at least doesn't sabotage it), avocations that support your new lifestyle, spiritual support, and other resources. Of course, there are other things in our lives we can't control that will affect our long-term success. But the list above includes are some things we can control. Most of all, there's the motivation factor: How badly do we want to be normal-sized and healthy? Best wishes to you.

    Gaining Weight Unbelievable!

I lose some weight and then I gain some weight. It fluctuates up and down and now I'm not stressing about it anymore unless it goes over 5 lbs weight gain. I am weighing myself at least 1 time per week at the least. I thought I was done losing and low and behold I lost a couple of pounds. That feels really good too.
