  1. I have RA and have for about ten years now. I had RNY due to my weight gain because of prednisone. I have been on prednisone for about 5 years. I decided to have the surgery to reduce my weight with the goal of getting of the steroids. I have struggled with finding a treatment that worked, but now receive monthly iv infusions for my RA. I had my RNY June 5, 2011. I have lost 99lbs and have gone from a size 22 to a size 10. However my biggest accomplishment is that I have gone from a dosage of 20mg a day on steroids to 2.5 and weaning myself to 0 this month. I am happy to report that my joints are happier and not hurting as much. I am playing soccer 4 times a week without needing lots of pain medication. Bottom line this surgery will not cure RA, but it will impact your quality of life with the disease. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

    Diet soda ever again?

When in maintainance soda won't kill you, but diet soda is full of poison sweetners and actually has been shown to cause weight gain and appetite stimulation even though it is zero calories. Drink mostly water and if you must have some poison every now and then you will probably survive. I don't really care for how soda feels when I drink it, but I have had one every now and then.
  3. Hello all! I'm new to the forum. I went today to see my primary doc about getting banded. Now I have to wait on blood work to come back and to hear from the pre-authorization. I'm nervous about that because my BMI is just 36. However, I have had 2 knee surgeries and 2 major back surgeries. My last spinal fusion was in June, which resulted in a 4-level lumbar fusion. I've struggled with my weight my whole life, but these surgeries have left me continuing to gain. I was placed on a medication that helps with depression as well as nerve damage and pain. That caused even greater weight gain. I'm tired of getting depressed when I go shopping with my daughters so here I am. While I'm waiting on the authorization, is there something I need to be going ahead and doing besides the diary?
  4. I was always very thin until about ten years ago when I gradually started putting on weight. I'm a 55 year old female. Until I was about thirty I was very self conscious about being so thin. (5'6" 120 lbs). When i was in my mid forties, i experienced several life changing events that affected me greatly and I found comfort in food. Over the past ten years I've gained 90 lbs. and feel miserable in my body. I stopped working out and allowed thoughts of food to consume me. It seems it takes a ridiculous amount of food to feel satisfied and full. So the weight gain continues. I've tried several diet programs, traveled across the country to weight loss and fitness camps, only to return to my usual poor eating habits and inactivity. I researched weight loss surgeries and after consulting with my dr., decided on the sleeve. I've done all of my prelimary ore op tests and am awaiting approval from my insurance company. My BMI is at 35, which may make it difficult for the approval I have only told one family member about my intentions and do not plan to tell anyone else. My family lives out
  5. This surgery is the best thing I ever did !!! I had always been normal weight until my early 20's and then developed thyroid issues where I had my thryroid removed. Ever since then my weight went up then went down, the went up then went down... the yo-yo weight gain/loss is not good for your body so last year my sis had the surgery and I saw how wonderful she did so I made my appt. and had my sugery this past April 2012. I will be one year out soon and have never felt better. I would do this again in a second !!!! Stay positive, follow your doctors orders and you will do fine !!! Good Luck !!!

I am stuck and not sure why

Weight gain or stalls can be caused by not exercising enough or too much carbs. You are obviously exercising enough so maybe carbs? The POO thing does sounds possible too. Goodluck I hope you start loosing soon
  7. Your experience sounds very much like mine. That weight gain from you hospital stay will quickly go away. I dropped 6 pounds over night the first night I was back home. They were pumping me with fluids until the very end. My IV came out and I was out the door literally about 5 minutes afterwards.

Just a Vent, then I'll shut up

For me, the cause of rapid weight gain when eat things I shouldn't is what I call "carb bloat". My body retains massive amounts of water - the areas around my eyes get puffy, my ankles swell, etc. It's the reverse of the rapid loss of a few pounds of water weight most of us see in the first week or two of low-carbing.
  9. I'm the day after you. Can't wait and also so anxious! It's going to be worth it, tho. To get off any meds you might be on and to feel healthy will be awesome! I'm also doing it for my kids. They have no idea that mom is having surgery. I just want them those what eating healthy can do. 2 of them are almost teens and starting puberty and its such a crucial time with weight gain at that point. I want to lead by example. I'm so looking forward to the future for al of us. Luckily my children are all trim and healthy, but my poor daughter is beginning to struggle and is giving in to the bad stuff behind my back hopefully watching mom make wise decisions will help her. . Good luck on your journey!
  10. Im still eating more as a plan. I log everything, and am back to exercise, adding in some weight lifting twice a week. I have gone from 1200 to 1800 a day with no weight gain. I fact I have lost about a pound. I just don't see how eating 1200 a day and staying the same weight can be the best way to go. If I had been losing some pounds on that, I may have never changed my plan, but I feel so much better eating more... so far so good. I hear from many folks on the net that eating more is a good way to lose very slowly... and slowly it is for me! I will keep this up and report back on my long term findings using the TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) plan.... I also bought a fitbit to figure our how many steps I take and my real energy output for daily life.
  11. In my case, I spent a lot of time working on the head hunger part so maybe that's why when the physical hunger disappeared so did my head hunger. When my physical hunger re-appeared so did my head hunger, but not nearly to the same extent as pre-band. I had my own methodology of dealing with my head hunger and I'm still using those same methods now for losing without the help of the band. I think you make a good point there Missy, and I think that if you go into this mentally unprepared to do battle against your headspace you will struggle the entire way. I found that in the first half of the year of my leaky band, that I was not in that headspace and my weight gain tells the story on that.

    Personal trainer or not?

I love love love my trainer. She is motivating and fun. However it is an expense, I pay 25 dollars per 1/2 hour session. It's gone up, but I am locked in to that price with a contract. Your motivation is to eliminate excess skin from what you said. Well... if that's your reason I would save your money for sure. In my opinion, exercise does not reduce excesss skin. Once the skin has lost it's elasticity, it's gone. Your skin may bounce back. It depends on genetics, pregnancy, weight gain and loss et... Plastic surgery once you've kept the weight off a while is obviously a solution, but expensive. My plastic surgeon got a machine called the venus freeze- but it's actually a warm treatment. It tightens loose skin. Not as dramatic as surgery, but his before and after pics look pretty good. You may want to google venus freeze and see if there is one in your area. All that being said, weight training has tons of benefits. If you can't afford a trainer for the long term, maybe save up to have one for some limited number of sessions. Tell them your goal is to learn moves and a routine that you can continue on your own. Good luck!
  13. Sorry to hear this! I am 14 days post-op and am getting in all of my Vitamins, fluids, and Protein plus walking (not at the gym yet--hoping to start that after my post-op appt today). I gained 18 lbs of Fluid in the hospital and took it off within a few days, and within a few more days I lost about 10 lbs. Now for at least 5 days, the scale hasn't moved. I am being patient with my body because I figure it's trying to get to an equilibrium. If I recall correctly, I think you lost a lot immediately post-op, so maybe your body is catching up, too? When you were in the hospital (sorry to hear this--glad you are okay), did they give you IV fluids by any chance? That could cause some temporary fluid gain. Also, anytime your body has an inflammatory response, it can cause some temporary weight gain too. I am quickly learning that patience is a virtue but it's so much easier said than done! Good luck!! Let's stay in touch since our surgery dates are so similar. Sending you good thoughts!!
  14. I am 16 days post op and haven't lost anything in about 5 days, today I gained about .5 pound. I know this isn't a true stall but I was wondering if anyone has hit this wall so soon. So far I've done awesome and I am happy with it but I feel like I am failing already. I am busting my butt to get fluids and protein in, but find it almost impossible to hit them daily. I am also cleared for food and can eat about an oz at a meal. Most of the time it's a meat or a cheese stick ( for the protein). But I am really focusing on fluids over real food. I've also had a bad allergic reaction to the adhesive they used, so I am not sure if that is playing a role. I plan to keep up with increasing fluids/ protein as well as increase my walking. ( currently a mile 4-5 days a week) Is this normal? Did I hit the dreaded three week stall early? Thanks in advance

    Uhh already getting frustrated

Two things that are factors in my life: 1. Logging and counting calories. 2. Heavy exercise throws my body into weight loss fits. It dramatically increases my hunger, and as my body repairs and builds muscle it retains large amounts of Water and the scale goes nuts. I counter #2 with the knowledge gained from #1. A pound of fat contains 3500 calories, if I know what I am eating, and I know what I am burning, the the wild fluctuations in the scale become more bearable. For instance, I have showed a gain the last three days, yet I have maintained a calorie deficit of 1300 calories, but my spin class been kicking my butt, and i have walked out of there on legs of jelly. So, are my weight gains real? Nope, not possible and the scale will catch up with reality in a couple of days.
  16. How do you treat Addisons Disease when we arnt suppossed to take cortisone? And what about weight gain as a side effect of the meds?
  17. Thanks for your reply and opinion! I'm on depo and don't get a period so I'm not sure if that would be something that would cause the weight gain? or if it's just Water.. not a clue
  18. I personally like to lose inches because sometimes you are exchanging fat for muscle so the scale can lie to you at times. About the weight gain, I always put on a few pounds before my period due to fluid retention...just always keep that in mind. Good luck!
  19. I'm one month post op. I've lost about 11 inches... and 11.6 pounds since surgery 4 weeks ago. (It was a little higher last week, however, I ended up gaining 2 pounds between week 3-4, and gained about 2 inches with the 2 pound gain, which sucks!) First question... I was fully expecting stalls along the way but... weight gain!? I've read a few posts regarding that, what is usually the cause, Water? hormones? - I will mention I ended up in the emergency room last Friday for dehydration and apparently I had a bladder infection with no symptoms, I still don't believe the Dr. However... that's a whole other story! - Water intake has been much better since then, and completed anti-biotics yesterday. Second question... what do you see as being better... the loss in inches or the loss on the scale... and why?

Just a Vent, then I'll shut up

Is there any research that states a sleeved person will gain weight faster than a non sleeved person? From this story, it would seem the answer is yes. Soda might also have caused an accelerated weight gain because of stored toxins. Fat is attracted to toxins and it needs extra water to support it. Anyways, if you know the answer to my weight gain question, please post.
  21. I'm anxious to here replies to this also. My band slipped about 10 mths ago and even with unfills/fills/tweaks, it's still slipped. Since I have no symptoms now (I only have about 6 cc in a 14cc band now), my dr is leaving it alone, but I'm getting tired of dieting to prevent weight gain when I have a tool inside not doing it's job. Thinking about having it replaced sometime in the future and I was wondering these same things. I hate to start ALL OVER again, with all of the fills and whatnot, but I'm almost at goal and wish to stay there forever and I know without it I'll gain all the weight back. This time, however, I will follow all of the rules and NOT VOMIT everyday! So I'm also interested in hearing from people that have had a revision done.... Marci

Just a Vent, then I'll shut up

Thank you guys! I'm just upset because going onto my 4th year, I just wanted to live like a normal person and not always just watch what I eat. . . guess not. I'm back on the wagon. I've been following the Atkins plan for nearly 1 year. It works well and when I went off and added some carbs which i wasn't supposed to yet, i guess my body retaliated and i did feel badly. Nausea, bloaty, swelling, weight gain. . etc. But I'm back on it now and won't be coming off it. Protein good, carbs bad. . . water good, soda bad! lol. . . . thanks again, i really feel better knowing that you all understood. . . blessings and pleasant journey (it's a damn long one)

    Losing Slow At Very Beginning?

Danal, I eat about 600 cal with no,carbs other than veggies. I still need to exercise though. I weigh 300 lbs and should be dropping fast bit I,am not. My doc and nutritionist think it is because I take a lot of 3 different antipsychotics that are known for weight gain. I haven't given up though. Besides,,I can't eat much anyway.
  25. stress can even cause a weight gain - stress about weight - stress about anything - stop stressing - stop weighing yourself - and emphasize how you feel - how do you feel?
