Thank you for this information. I'm 2 weeks out and just saw my surgeon yesterday. They said they don't want me to start vitamins (except B12 - I got a shot) until my next visit in 2 weeks. Still, I looked at some of the "bariatric" vitamins and they do seem pricey. Do you take a sublingual B12? If so, may I ask which one?

SLEEVE CONVERSION: Vertical gastric sleeve (VGS) to Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) ?
berry girl posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Vertical gastric sleeve (VGS) to Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) ? I was sleeved about 7 years ago in Mexico. The operation added about 90 pounds of weight loss over 18 months. However unfortunately, after several years and a couple of babies, the weight has come back on. I’m exactly where I was seven years ago. 😔 I feel my pouch has been stretched slowly over the years and my metabolism is shot. Not uncommonly, one of the side effects of the sleeve was terrible heartburn. I’ve been taking a prescription grade antacid since my surgery. I recently read that this particular bariatric side affect has been linked to stomach cancer. 😳 I recently consulted with bariatric surgeon in Mexico to see what my options are and he suggested I convert to a mini gastric bypass. He said it would resolve the acid reflux complication and also I would lose the weight I have regained. Has anyone gone from VGS to a MGB that could share their experiences with me? Either here or privately? I’d really appreciate it. 🙏🏼 -
I had the sleeve. I lost about 127 I gained back 25. How I handle stress lately varies. Sometimes eating, sometimes drinking sometimes working tour I don’t hate exercising I love it. Never gave that up. I don’t have a bariatric buddy to face time with or spend time with

My wonderful surgeon covered various bariatric surgeries and the success rates (and successful "reversal" rates) of each. He then went into more detail on the 2 he performs, banding and bypass. He described his "credentials" including how often he's done each surgery, what type of band he prefers/uses and why, etc. He discussed the procedure and life style changes required by each. He discussed the negative side effects (like hair loss and slippage, death...) and how much and how severe each is for his patients. Then he had a Q & A time (very patient) and THEN that great guy took another 20 min to just talk to my husband about it all (Husband is an RN who worked in a GI lab and was against it but was all for the band after doc and he talked and doc addressed his concerns) Afterward if we wanted we could immediately schedule a follow up appt, or we could take our time. No hard sell whatsoever. I immediately felt at ease and valued as a person, not just a patient.

I've taken Trader Joe's High Potency chewable multi's and Wellesse liquid calcium since surgery. My labs have always been great and I don't miss paying tons of extra money for special "bariatric" vitamins. One thing, if you are looking at Calcet or Caltrate make sure you are getting calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate. That is something that sleevers need to be very aware of! Calcium carbonate doesn't work well for us.

I started doing all my pre-op doctor appointments in March 2014. I had Cardiologist, Endoscopy, sleep study and Psychological visits all done in 3 1/2 months. The only problem found from all appoinments at that time was a mild case of sleep apnea and they discovered a few PVC's while I slept during the study. So went back to cardiologist and he put me on a Holter moniter for 21 days. On the the 16th day doctor called me in for immediate visit with some new results from the moniter. The night before he saw A-Fib not PVC's which has resulted in having to take Eliquis, Flecainide, and Beta Blocker meds. Also I just had an Eco Cardiogram which results were fine. So at this point feeling a little discouraged because my surgery should have been in next few weeks. I do understand thats why they do all these different doctor visits/tests so there's no surprises during surgery and beyond. Basically I was wondering has anyone else had this type of delay and how long did it take for surgery clearance from cardiologist and Bariatric Surgeon. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Band removed two weeks now(feel great)
utahband replied to adoorme9's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
*Dr. Daniel Huacuz* also messed up on my friend`s band. She had her surgery on December 2007 and since then was having extremelly strong pains. Since I have the band as well I kept on telling her that sometimes we do have pain but she needed to check with her doctor. Before surgery Dr. Huacuz called her many times and answered each and every question she had, however this picture changed after surgery, she could not get a hold of him often and every time she talked to him he was very rude to her. Once I called him and while he talked to me I could hear a beeping sound on the background, sounded like he was in the surgery center at the same time - hopefully not performing a surgery.! Last week, my friend passed out and was taken to the ER with her nails and lips turning purple... when the bariatric surgeon got inside he found an inamed band that was place in the wrong portion of her stomach and on top of that it was an old type of band, one that is not even produced by inamed any longer. My friend said that the day before surgery, Dr. Huacuz showed her small, new band and said that was the style she was getting.... All I know is that my friend is now doing well after the nightmare... she is glad to have that band removed and to be receiving the care of a new doctor. -
Between Friday and Saturday I almost talked myself out of this but today I feel a lot better The bariatric Group that will be doing my surgery said that they are not members or providers under my insurance and well according to my insurace in black and white yes they are the letter I got from the bariatric Group said I woul;d be responsible for what the insurance will not pay but according to my insurance as long as they are in my HMO paln and they all are that I will never see a claim and I will not have to pay out anything other than my co payment for the hospital well after reading that letter i just got depressed for I don't have 3500.00 so I have to wait until tomorrow to clear this all up and all I have been doing is crying and not eating

Bariatric surgery is no easy way out. Because getting 80% of your stomach removed is not an easy thing for your body or your mind. You might even feel regret the first few weeks. I am two months out and just one year older than you, I also had been struggling with my weight for a long time. I already have lost around 46pounds, I went back to sport and it actually felt great instead of just feeling like a damn punishment. It's only been two months and I can see many differences. Good luck in your journey, your body is yours and if you feel that the surgery is your only help, don't let people who have no idea what's it like to be fat and obese to tell you otherwise.

Dietitian/Trainer question- I need some advice FAST
Bufflehead replied to mi75's topic in Fitness & Exercise
"Dietitians" that hang out in gyms, as a rule, know nothing about bariatric surgery patients or life long obesity. They usually tell you things like, you need to eat more, you need to eat more carbs, here, eat a peanut butter sandwich, have some crackers, drink this "gainer" protein shake, blah blah blah. I would rather have no advice than have advice from a typical gym-based "dietitian." If they can show paperwork that they are a Registered Dietitian (NOT a nutritionist), preferably with a certificate in counseling bariatric surgery patients, I would listen to them. Otherwise I would run fast and far away. -
Ok, so i've decided to begin a lifting program. At this point, I have attempted several options but it has proven to be a bit complicated! So here is the dilemma: My original surgeon does not take my current insurance, nor does the dietitian. i WAS going to go to them, and pay out of pocket, dietitian alone is about $250 for one session. Additionally, the dietitian that was there when I had my surgery is now gone, and there is a new one who wouldn't know me at all. I saw a new surgeon affiliated with my insurance and although he didn't have much to offer me, he does have a dietitian that I can see. There is still SOME cost, with my co-pay/deductible. I have appointment for next week but not sure if I should keep it, again this person doesn't know me at all either. Lastly, my family belongs to the local YMCA. They have some trainers (I think maybe college students), and they do have a dietitian. He is only available every couple weeks by appointment. Even though we belong to the facility, it would still be a fee to see him (in the neighborhood of $150 for a 1-hour session with him and 3-30 minute sessions with a trainer. It's sort of a package deal. So my dilemma is: will the bariatric dietitian be able to give me the necessary guidance I need to know WHAT to eat as I begin a weight training program, and if not then who should I see? I don't know if a registered dietitian affiliated with my Y would know enough about bariatric surgery and specifically size restriction (i can only eat 1 cup at a time) to be able to work with me. Also, is it wiser to just go ahead and buy some sessions with the trainers at the Y or is it worth the money to invest in an actual personal trainer for a few months? VERY VERY VERY CONFUSED, need some guidance quickly as I need to make/cancel appointments. Any suggestions very much appreciated!!!

Anti-inflammatory Meds a No No?
Cocoabean replied to TwilightLover83's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
As always, follow your surgeon's advice. My surgeon said no NSAIDs on a regular basis, but once in a while is OK for me. They are rough on the stomach. I also read on a bariatric surgeon's website that he doesn't have a problem with his band patients taking them as their stomachs haven't been cut the way bypass patients' stomachs have been. For what it's worth. -
My PCP has counseled (ie: nagged) me about my weight for years. When I went to her to talk about bariatric surgery I was prepared for her to not be supportive. I am not really sure why... Perhaps because she has always been 100lbs soaking wet with boots on! I was ready to walk out the door for good, but to my surprise, she was all for it! I am ever so grateful for that.

Had my initial Plastics consultation
Daisee68 replied to Chrystee's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
@@Jesm1029 - Supposedly rule of thumb is waiting to you are at goal and stable for 6 no the to a year before having surgery. My NUT is insistent that I wait at least 18 months to 24 months post-op to have surgery. Having said that, I reached goal at 1 year and had my PS consultation right at 1 year and have scheduled my first surgery for October which will be 16 months post-op. My plastics surgeon just asks that you are at goal and stable for 3 months (which I will be). My bariatric surgeon and counselor (and various other drs) are fine with me preceding now. There are a few folks on here who had surgery less than a year out but I think when you get to or close to goal is really a better determination. Sent from my HTC One M9 using the BariatricPal App -
All pain .........No Gain
cproctor501 replied to cproctor501's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor is Mark Shina, an excellent man and a wonderful bariatric surgeon. He could have finished the surgery he said but my blood pressure kept bottoming out, and he was scared he was going to loose me because the scar tissue in my abdomen had to be removed to get to my stomach which would take an extra hour. Apparentally certain types of blood pressure medications interfere with the anesthetic used to put you under. I am going off 1 of my blood pressure meds for two weeks and we are going to do it again the 16th. -
Chewables make me so nauseous!
SLF1027 replied to sarahbinalaska's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 weeks post op and have tried so many different vitamins. The chewable a from celebrate and bariatric advantage make me vomit. I've tried orange, berry something and vanilla. My doctor moved me to capsules at 2 weeks because of the vomiting and still the same thing! I'm taking celebrate Multi capsules and each time I swallow one I know to grAb my pink puke tray. It's to the point where I skip them most times because I don't want to throw up. My NUT suggested I open and mix them with food, but any way I put them into my body, they come back up. It's so frustrating!!! -

Hi everyone! I am a 32 year old mom of 2. I started my bariatric surgery process on February 18th. I have completed all necessary requirements and now I'm waiting for approval and surgery date ????????????. I honestly cannot wait. I've been overweight since I was 5 with bouts of weight loss over the years, but nothing has stuck. This is my last resort. I'm so ready for this life change!!

Glad I found you. It's nice to be here! I'm having gastric bypass surgery on July 13. I wanted to know how everyone's experience has been going. Lots of helpful information to be found here. My peak weight was 338 in April 2014. I started my 6-month PCP supervised diet in December 2014, when I weighed 326. At the end of the diet in June 2015, I weighed 265, so I've lost around 70 since my peak. I'm halfway through the 2-week liquid diet, and it's as miserable as everyone says it is, so I'm glad that we're all in agreement on that. The first two days were the worst, and I almost quit. I didn't quit, and now the diet sucks less. Still not great, but the Bariatric Advantage shakes seem to do the trick. Also I get one BA bar per day, and all the sugar free Jello and sugar free Popsicles I can stand. Yay jello! Thanks! Good luck to you all!

Another helpful addition is “Added Sugars”, which is found under the carbohydrate information. Naturally occurring sugars are primarily from fruit (fructose) and dairy (lactose). Vegetables and grains can also contain a small amount of naturally occurring sugar. For added sugars, look for the words sugar, syrup, agave, molasses, juice, beet sugar, brown sugar, turbinado and honey. Now that we have the total and added sugars, you can determine if the food or beverage is something you can work into your eating. While there are no formal guidelines, limiting foods and fluids to products that have less than 5 grams of added sugar is a starting point. A rule of thumb for carbohydrate foods is to eat the food that is closest to the farm. That means the least processed the better. For example, a peeled apple is better for you than applesauce. Applesauce is better for you than juice. One hundred percent real fruit juice is another way to say “sugar water” for bariatric patients. The Nutrition Facts Label will list naturally occurring sugars, but you won’t see added sugars listed. So, juice is a high sugar item. Your dietitian will assess your activity level, blood sugar readings, body composition and tolerances to help you find a healthy carbohydrate goal to work into your eating. We now have a better tool to hunt down the added sugars in our foods and beverages. Happy hunting!

Preop Diet frustration, Need help!!
PeteO replied to hirskobrn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on day 10 of my preop diet. I am only allowed the Bariatric Advantage shakes and Clear liquids. According to my documentation, I am allowed to use milk in my shakes. I have been consuming mass amounts of Crystal Light. Mr. Smith is right ... you have to get that ketosis to kick in and carbs prevent that. I am surprised that your surgeon didn't define exactly what you can and can't have. I have lost 18 lbs. in the last 10 days. -
Band to Sleevers how many pounds did yu drop in the first 2 months ?
nowornever14 replied to nowornever14's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did not have to do anything except to tell my family doctor what health issues I had with the band. And he referred me to our bariatric centre in our hospital. From there I agreed to get the sleeve done after the band was removed. I am in Canada we have free health coverage here. This falls under our health care system. Check out this website for other topics which are exactly talking about this issue and the process in the US. I know there you will be able to get a lot of answers to your questions. I hope this helps. -
My out of pocket costs were minimal. Only thing I had to pay for were the copays for the visits with the Psychologist so far. I did not have any out of pocket costs on hospital because they use the Bariatric Institute floor for your stay in the hospital.
