    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

Totally agree with Armoma45. Given the large number of people having various bariatric procedures these days, the number of those with any major complications is actually quite low. Granted, there are known cases of inexperienced surgeons doing botched operations but that's why you do your research on your surgical team beforehand. As for having a good support system, it's always better when you do but single folks like myself, with kids all grown and out on their own, we can usually manage on our own. Having kids, especially babies, I would imagine would be quite difficult with no help. It's definitely something you need to consider. You won't want to be picking them up and down for at least a week but more like two. Though it is a laparoscopic procedure, they're still cutting through your abdominal muscles for the 4-5 incisions and those will be hurting and need time to heal. Then there's the gas pain to deal with, although chasing after rugrats that gas should pass fairly quickly. 😄 I don't say all this to scare you into changing your mind, just giving the reality of it. I hope you can find someone to help with the kids for a couple weeks. Also, I saw you ask about stairs....they won't be a problem, if anything they'll probably be good for you. The biggest issue for the first week or two is sitting up in bed or other things that cause you to use your abdominal muscles. Good luck and wishing you all the best.
  2. Hi y'all I'm scheduled to attend the Bariatric seminar next month, and I would like to know a little about the process starting?

Bariatric surgery was a big mistake

Yes to all of this! Honestly I like taking my bariatric vitamins. I use chewables for the multi, the calcium, the iron, and the probiotic. I space them throughout the day after meals as my “dessert” for afterwards. Not only do they satisfy my need for something a bit sweeter, but I feel good knowing I’m giving my body things that it needs to stay as healthy as possible. FYI, the chocolate bariatric advantage iron chews are quite tasty with a glass of milk and I do this combo a lot as a post-dinner treat.
  4. I had lap band surgery in 2014 with moderate success. It got me down from 265 to 220 in six months. My weight stayed stable for about 4 years until I had to have the fluid let out due to being unable to swallow anything. Since then my weight has been slowly creeping cack up again. My insurance does does not cover Bariatric surgery. I paid $10k for the band and will have to self pay to revise. I am trying to find someone who has had good experience with a reasonably priced doctor that performed a band to VSG revision. I am in the Midwest and would prefer to stay in the US but will travel. Thank you.
  5. I joined a bariatric support group at Torrance Memorial Hospital yesterday and it was so inspiring and incredible to meet other people who are on this same journey! They knew nothing about this forum, by the way. Most of them had a significant other, a sibling or a friend tag along for support — how kind! There was one young lady (Ilana) who came with a friend (Katie) who was taking notes for her and asking all these questions — “playing the devil’s advocate”, as she put it. I shared my story. I was emotional and lengthy, but everyone was supportive… I met 6 people — some who’ve had surgery already (one lady was only 9 days post-op) and some who are still in their waiting phase (I’m the only revision and lowest BMI, but oh well)… There was one lady (Lisa) who lost 40 lbs. in her pre-op diet, had the sleeve done in October 2018 and thereafter lost another 80 lbs. — simply incredible! She said she’d actually like to be 10 lbs. heavier… (You're never going to hear me say that, LOL!) I got everyone’s phone number and created a GroupMe group for us. I’m excited for that to be our safe space; sharing/support portal kind of thing, especially since everyone is local and we can meet up!

    Over the counter vitamins?

I take a Prenatal vitamin on recommendation of my hospital Dietician. Only time I didn't was right after surgery when they told me to crush everything, well the chewable I had weren't as nice as Alex Brecher at Bariatric Pal store has, in fact they were VILE, as soon as I could get the Okay I went back to my prenatal caplet, can't beat Once a Day in my book. And $99 sounds high, until you add up how much Over- the- Counter costs monthly. Sounds like he has Bariatricians formulating his, and I can testify his delivery is quite quick, my orders came no longer than a few days, even over the weekend, to Ohio.
  7. I understand your fears and questions Food no longer rules my world. Pre surgery It’s hard to even imagine what your sensation of full or hungry feels like. I don’t think I had a real sensation of full before surgery. It’s amazing to feel full on a small amount of food. My hunger is much more manageable after my sleeve. My taste buds have changed and it’s a good thing. What you’re getting into: Surgery does not take hunger 100% away. You will feel the sensation of full at an earlier point than you do currently. Your surgery restriction is going to stop you from overeating, you can satisfy hunger signals on smaller amounts of food. Healthy sweet and salty options manage cravings. Ask your surgeon/dietician for your weight loss food plan. Also get your maintaining plan to see what food will look like after goal. Nutrition is still flavorful. You can make old favorites in a healthy way. - Google bariatric real food stage recipes. You won’t be eating 500 to 900 calories forever. Protein shakes are only for the first stages when your surgery restriction is tight. Real food stage: You will be able to get your protein in with real whole foods (you can ditch the shakes) Your calories will increase as you progress. When you hit maintenance stage your diet will change once again. New calorie range and healthy carbs to slow/stop your weight loss.

  9. Would you mind telling me the way around the insurance covering visits with PCP, I have insurance, under my husbands policy at work, they will cover him for bariatric surgery, but not me, and we pay to have me covered. Insurance is a rip off!
  10. Thanks! Yesterday I got in over 75 gm protein, and I’ve started tweaking my foods to sneak in a bit more. For example, this recipe will never make the food network, but I gave myself a 30gm lunch that was under 250 calories by using a packet of bariatric protein cream of chicken Soup, with a scoop of beef bone Protein Powder, then 1 ounce shredded rotisserie chicken. Put in a smidge of grated cheddar and it was a very high protein nutrition bomb. In fact, this filled me up so much (I ate it at noon) that I had zero desire for a snack and had dinner of 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 ounce diced ham cubes, and a pack of tuna to round out the days nutrition. I was also happy because I FINALLY got in 96 ounces of Water. Honestly very soon I need to sit down, do some math, and figure out what my goal weight needs to be. I was sleeved so I know that I’m “supposed” to lose about 60-80% of my excess fat, but it’s the estimation of my “excess” that I’m having trouble with. I figure I was about 100 pounds overweight the day I went in for surgery at 5’7” and 246 pounds, but who can tell me how much of that is excess fat? Since my current weight is 185, I’ve lost 60, which is assuming that if all of the 100 pounds extra was “extra” fat, then I’m already at one edge of what I’m expected to have lost. I’m starting to wonder if my goal of losing all extra 100 pounds is realistic. Lordy I hate it when the self-doubt starts creeping in and I’m questioning my numbers!

Bariatric surgery was a big mistake

Depression, and I believe regret could come from a similar place, is incredibly common after WLS. I hope anyone feeling down considers seeing a therapist and/or psychiatrist with experience with bariatric patients. Feel better and be well.

Looking for a surgeon around NY (upstate)

Don’t be afraid to meet with a few, and pick which one makes you feel comfortable. Make sure it is a complete and comprehensive program, center of excellence. They won’t send you all over the place for evaluations etc. I did have some trouble with my first hospital, as the BMI criteria was under a range that I would reach... so I had to switch. I started my journey needing to lose 300 lbs. & after meeting with my surgeon, learning their program, I had to lose over 100 lbs to have surgery. So with my insurance having a mandatory 6 month wait, I hoped I could meet the criteria and have surgery. I lost 100 lbs in 6 months! BEFORE SURGERY! Then the doctor said that I needed to lose another 40 before they would operate. Of which, 20-25lbs will come off in the pre-op diet, so I really needed to lose another 20lbs before the pre-op diet. WTF?!? That would have been almost half my weight loss goal & without surgery! So I decided at that point, I would just do it all on my own. I then pushed harder at the gym and tightened the diet and still couldn’t make the needle move on the scale. Then I started having knee pain. A sports medicine doctor diagnosed me with arthritis at the age of 35 and strongly recommended I cease the running and weight lifting, just swim. So now if I wanted to lose weight it was time to find another Bariatric program. I did some looking, called around and would ask the criteria for BMI and insurance. I found one and started all over again. I drive 1.5 hrs each way for the new office. They offered more surgery options and were passionate about me having the right surgery for me. There were tons of differences between both programs & hospitals. I still visit the first one to use the scale, I feel hospital scales are more Accurate than home, etc.

GASTRIC BYPASS REVISE FROM GASTRIC SLEEVE

from what I've heard/read (from hanging out on various bariatric boards for the last five or so years), it does help most people. Not all - but most.

    4th of July food?

At that stage of starting to eat solids, I would stick to cold cuts and cheese. I know it sounds boring for a BBQ, but the last thing you want is to suffer the whole time with a bariatric episode. I wish you luck and tons of fun!

    Over the counter vitamins?

I've taken Centrum (or the generic equivalent) since day 1. Walgreens and CVS both have generics. I took the chewable version for the first few months, then switched over to a regular tablet. for calcium, I take a couple of different versions. When at home I either take generic tablets or mix some Upcal D powder into my yogurt (for my breakfast dosage). I always have Bariatric Advantage chews with me for when I'm out & about and it's time for my calcium (I take one of the other versions when I'm at home because they're cheaper - but BA chews are great for when you're away from home or traveling)

    Over the counter vitamins?

I am required to take ProCare Health Bariatric multivitamins with iron. Also, calcium citrate with D3. I tried Bariatric Fusion but it lacks vitamin K.

    Over the counter vitamins?

Just go to supermarket or chemist whichever has the best deal. I use 2 different multivitamin either Centrum or Swisse; there's no rule that says you have to use specific bariatric brands... I look for whatever is on sale but also which has got most vitamins for the price... You have to take multivitamins everyday for life so it does add up

    Over the counter vitamins?

I take specific bariatric vitamins. Bariatric Advantage brand multivitamin, vitamin B12, and calcium chews. They might be more expensive, but I feel it's worth it, and my surgeon recommends this brand. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Over the counter vitamins?

I was told to take Flintstone w/ iron then calcium citrate which I got from bariatric pal its the bariatric advance chews. I have been looking into Tespo its a machine kinda like a Keurig machine that will make you a shot of vitamins daily. They have a bariatric pod two shot glasses of drink a day one in morning and one at night and that it. Rather then taking a ton of pills. But I'm the worst at taking pills so I think it would be more beneficial for me to go the Tespo route. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. Just wondering if everyone takes specific "bariatric vitamins" or do you use regular over the counter vitamins? And what's the best calcium to take? Actually, after talking to a few VSG patients (from different surgeons) I've noticed that different doctors require their patients to have different vitamin regiments. What do YOU take?

    Super frustrated

None of the providers on my insurance list (BCBS) did bariatric psych evals, so I had to pay $200 for the one recommended by my surgeon. Just had to bite the bullet and get it done.

    Super frustrated

I did mine online. I think it was called bariatric evaluations. I had to pay out of pocket and it was $150 dollars. Was super easy, they do it over the phone. Good luck!
