  1. What are you actually eating? My weight loss stalled for quite a while and I was worried I was just done but then I became more careful with watching what I eat and making sure I get protein and the scale moved again. I'm also really confused that your GP apparently diagnosed you with something but you don't know the name of it. If you do actually have a condition that causes you to gain weight then you need to seek treatment for that.
  2. @ms.sss My GP wasn't sure, but based on my diet and weight issues, she figured that had to be the case. What little I did find about it mentioned that it's not unheard of in people who are of Belgian/Irish descent. Both locations are prone to famines, so what was a life saving trait is now a malignant one in their descendants. I've never found a name for it when looking either. I'm going to try Keto again for a week or two and see how I feel. My doc recommended it as a way to restart my weight loss, so we'll see how that goes. I really appreciate your input!

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Y'all...... Surgery is next Tuesday (9/21) and I'm starting to question it alllllllll. What if I fail? What if this is just another thing I screw up and end up NOT losing weight, or worse, gaining weight? What if it doesn't work for me? What if I'm one of those people who loses 20lbs and then stops (not to negate a 20lb loss, that is GREAT, but its only a drop in the bucket for me)? I will never be able to forgive myself if I spend all this time and money and put my family through the stress of surgery, just to fail again. I'm not scared of the surgery of the rest of the pre-op diet or the work required post-op. But I am TERRIFIED of failing again and I'm not sure how to get out of my own head. Anyone else spiraling? How do we break the shame cycle? ETA: Yes, I've done therapy and it was very helpful. Not currently attending, but am working through a self-paced program specific to binge eating/ food addition and shame. I know this is in my head and I'm taking steps to work on it, just crowd sourcing some encouragement.

    Day 5 post op- struggling.

This made me snort. I'm on day 9 pre-op liquid diet and this is exactly how it feels. Not jazzed about this stretching on post-op, but the thought of little fat eating Pac Man style weight loss makes it a little easier to manage.

    Carbonation?

If it causes you pain, don’t do it. Carbonated drinks will Not cause your stomach to stretch out or any old wives’ tales that are perpetuated in the weight loss surgery industry. I’m down 85lbs at 5 months and drink 1, very rarely 2 cans of caffeine free diet soda a day. Make sure you’re still getting in the majority of your fluids from better sources and not having sides such as acid reflux and you’ll be fine. Also wanted to note that diet soda can be a trigger for some when it comes to binging. If this is the case, also stay away.
  6. The "10oz per meal"...do you know how many calories these meals consists of? At 10 months, weight loss is more affected by caloric value vs volume/mass. A 10oz salad is just a fraction of the calories of a 10oz burger. If you can, try tracking your food intake and see if this is where you can make some changes. Track it for say, a week straight and you can get an idea of your average intake. Reduce if necessary. Calorie intake is *usually* the issue if a stall lasts longer than a few weeks (months?). If not, I'd probably suggest to consult a medical professional to see if you have any circumstances that pre-dispose you to being heavier. Good Luck! ❤️
  7. Hey Everyone, I hope you're doing well. Here's a bit of background on me before I get into my current dilemma, if you don't care about that, skip to the TLDR at the end. I'm a 27 year old man and I got my surgery last year. I've always been heavy (the last time I was less than 300 lbs was in elementary school) and I wanted to live a longer, happier life. I talked with my doctor and she said that Bariatric surgery was the best option for me. I went to one Bariatric clinic and was basically treated as a number, so after six months of prep and almost $1k, I left them and went to a Bariatric clinic that a family friend had had good luck with. I had better luck with them and was able to get my surgery ~ 4 months after my first visit with them(vs almost a year with the first one). My finance(then GF) and I actually got COVID three months before my surgery, though it was not horrible for us. My hospital stay was fine and my recovery went pretty well. I had issues with the liquid diet following the surgery, but after that I was fine until now. Read after the TL;DR for my current dilemma. TL;DR: I'm 10 months post-op and my weight loss has stagnated. I'm prepping ~10 oz per meal, though I usually don't finish it, and have been doing that for about a month. I do about 20-30 minutes on a peddle bike (under my desk) per day. My doctor recommended Keto for me (which I tried pre-op and lost 90+lbs, though it was terrible for me psychologically) and I started it today. I was wondering if anyone had any tips to push past the wall I'm stuck on. Thanks for any advice. Paul

a majority of us experience hair loss and yes, it'll regrow

    Hair loss question

If you are male, I urge you to stay away from Rogaine. It will screw up your hormone levels (testosterone). Not sure what its effect is on women. Every I know who's had this happen says it grows back within a few months. What happens is the stress from the change in eating patterns and from the surgery has your existing hair reach senescence (end of life), and it grows back normal, but because there's enough reaching senescence at one time it looks like hair thinning. I am very glad I keep my hair cut very close, it won't take as long when this happens to me for me to look "normal".
  11. Hello, I am 4.5 months after Sleeve surgery. I am very happy with the weight loss. I know hair thinning is common. I am seeing (for about 4 wks now), a substantial increase in my thinning. I am doing all I think I can. Noixin hair products, Rogaine, Biotin. My team says it is normal and will regrow. My question is....anyone experience this and did it regrow??
  12. Has anyone here tested positive for Covid after surgery and suddenly stopped losing weight? I’m 5.5 months out and started having symptoms a little over a week ago, tested positive yesterday. I haven’t dropped any weight since and am actually gaining. I’m not on any medications since I am vaccinated and my symptoms aren’t severe. I’ve been consistently dropping weight up until the last week and a half. Not sure if it’s possibly inflammation from Covid that’s causing this?

    Sleeve to Ryn...Help

You will need to talk to the surgeon about the length of the bypass and optimizing it for either additional weight loss or just maintaining your current weight. This *might* dictate how much additional weight you might lose.

    Hair loss

I started losing my hair at 3 mnths post op. Cut It all off into a pixie-cut shortly thereafter. I noticed all the chicken hair regrowth around 6-7 months postop. I’m almost 3 yrs post now and i have a full head of past-shoulder-length hair. Would’ve been longer but I had lots of haircuts.
  15. I'm with @PolkSDA on this one (Full disclosure: I used to be Team Ultra-Low Carb during weight loss phase and some months afterwards, but had changed my tune since.) OP, I eat "unhealthy" stuff on the regular. Mostly in the from of dessert-y stuff, and fried stuff. I still limit my carb-y bread/rice/pasta intake, but eat some once in a while ,esp if it's homemade. I also drink (alcohol) regularly. I'm sure many of the members on here would tsk-tsk or clutch their pearls at the range of foods I eat. But I get it...my eating habits, while they work for me and my lifestyle, would be an utter crash and burn for others. I know my limits and boundaries and they know theirs. We all succeed and fail under different circumstances. The secret is to figure out what special set of circumstances will work for YOU. I track everything I eat (garbage and all), and make decisions on what I am willing to eat based on what MFP says, as well as what my scale says in the morning. This protocol has been serving me well for 2 years. I am only almost 3 years post op, so am really still just "at the beginning of the rest of my life", so who knows if what I'm doing will sustain me. But its working so far. P.S. I am 5'2" female, 115 lbs and have been maintaining this weight (+/- 5 lbs) for 2 years. Good Luck! ❤️
  16. I probably single-handedly supported the entire beef jerky industry during weight loss phase (and some months after that). Little to no sugar, lotsa protein and satisfied my never-ending salt cravings. I always had a little ziploc of it in my purse. I also ate alot of cottage cheese and yogurt. After weight loss phase, I went through a love-affair with chicharron (i.e., pork rinds/cracklins). But I wouldn't recommend this until you are past weight loss phase as they are VERY high in calories (but also very high in protein). In terms of substitutes and alternatives, here are some examples of items I ate (and still eat)...note that I was ultra-low carb during weight loss phase, and and try to be semi-low carb now (but don't always succeed, lol) Shiratake noodles instead of pasta (actually very low nutrtion-wise, but I had to eat my saucy foods with something!) Chicken pizza crusts instead of wheat based pizza crusts (I also did cauliflower crusts, but I personally prefer the chicken ones). Kale chips instead of chips-chips Berries instead of higher-sugar fruits cashew milk instead of regular milk almond flour instead of wheat flour (careful: almond flour is way higher in calories) Stevia or erythritol instead of sugar sparkling water with lemon instead of pop/soda

    No weight loss pre-op

I couldn't budge the scale the first three months, no matter how few calories I ate. Every time I managed to lose a pound, it would show back up within two days, sometimes bringing a buddy with it. It was incredibly frustrating to be eating cabbage instead of cake and not losing. What finally overcame it was making sure I drank at least half a gallon of fluids every day. My weight loss is still much slower than is reasonable to expect, but at least the gaining seems to have stopped (knocking on wood).

    Getting nekkid with someone new

As some of you know, I've been through a recent-ish divorce. After my plastic surgery in Jan my husband got weird, angry, super insecure and borderline abusive. I've started dating again and have met a really nice guy. I have disclosed to him about my WLS but not PS yet. Although my loose skin on my belly and arms is gone and my breasts are perky again, my thighs still show the evidence of my significant weight loss. Plus I've got all my PS scars. I've been seeing this guy for about a month. He is super sweet, funny, smart, and supportive. I'm having him over for dinner tonight at my place for the first time, and I imagine things are likely to progress to where he may be seeing said loose skin and scars. I'm so nervous! I'm for sure worried about rejection, about his reaction, etc. Any guidance for me? I'm totally confident and feel awesome fully dressed but am super nervous about being on full view by someone new for the first time in many, many years.
  19. Amen sister. I honestly think this is the not-so-secret to weight loss and maintenance: keep doing what works until it doesn’t anymore.

    Regain

I'm out four years and in the past few months have been battling a slight gain. It has brought me back mortality as far as weight loss goes. I no longer have the super power to lose it as I once did post WLS. After talking with others who have had WLS we all came to the conclusion that 1- The gain must be addressed ASAP. 2- We cannot eat as we did, we need to "trim the fat" from our diets. It's like spending too much money and going into debt. Do you continue to spend at the same rate and expect to make up the debt? Same with food, we need to take in less to lose the most. 3- Do it in attainable increments. A loss of 2lbs a week will get you better results overall than trying to lose 10lbs in a week. 2lbs is doable and you can build on your success while not achieving the 10lbs psychologicaly will start you on the eating for comfort spiral 4- Some form of exercise is better than no exercise. We found that taking the stairs on a regular basis really helps as does simple walking. Of course if you feel comfortable going to a gym that's great as well. 5- Weigh once a week and the same time on the same scale. We find this gives us enough time to see trends and to address them. Daily weigh ins are not accurate and longer than a week is too much time to correct any minor gains. At this stage of our lives weight loss takes effort and time. Long gone are the days of rapid weight loss. I'm lucky to have so many family and friends to talk to and to get different views on things WLS related. It really helps. I for one could not do it on my own.

Six months post WLS and you've been put in a position to fail. Not by your doing but by an inconsiderate person. You have only ONE CHANCE to do it right. Only one. You need to give it your best shot and not have an inconsiderate person sabotage your path to better health. I once again bring up the comparison to being an alcoholic . Would you allow anyone to hinder your recovery from alcohol by letting them bring it into your home? NO, so why allow him to sabotage your recovery from poor health and obesity by allowing him to bring in junk food? The choice here is very simple, for you to succeed with weight loss and getting back to good health he cannot be a part of your every day lifestyle. Get rid of the food or pack it up and drop it off to the place he is going to but you need to get it out of your home. Remember you are only six months out and you've already gained weight. I'm out four years and I will tell you it gets harder NOT easier to lose and maintain the weight loss. Your in the best position of your life to lose the weight. Don't let Mr. inconsiderate ruin it for you. Despite what you might hear, insurance companies will not pay for a do over. Make the best of this golden opportunity.
  22. I’m four, nearly five years out and had out some weight on because I rediscovered sugar. I’m now involved in a running battle with sugar and eating. intermittent fasting really helps, low carb helps but I now have this intense reaction to carbs and I’m at a loss. the extra weight - just a few pounds now, goes if I fast. The obsession with food goes too. But I get cramps and am sure I’m not eating enough when I do fast. feel a bit stuck! Had chips last night and my blood sugar shot up to 20 just after then down to four within 3 hours. But, if I do intermittent fasting, blood sugar stays constant at around 6. anyone dealing with similar?
  23. I was sleeved in March and have lost 60. But now I have someone staying with me, my ex. He has become homeless in the last 6 months. He bought a bunch of junkfood even though I told him no (two kinds of cookies, cheese-covered popcorn, ice cream, high cal fruit bars, chocolate cake) then he ended up in the hospital. I broke down two days out of a week and my old eating disorder kicked in, causing me to gain 5 pounds! Now he is calling saying don’t eat my food! I told him already he could not bring that into my house. He will get out in two days. I will be taking him elsewhere because even though he is contributing financially he is wrecking my weight loss. Btw, he is also smoking cigarettes. Guess I am looking for support in my decision to not let him live here any more. It is sad he may be homeless but he apparently cares nothing about my health. I know I will not be able to continue my program with him around.

    Regret?

This sounds like the infamous "three week stall"—there are thousands and thousands and thousands of posts here about it. Just stay the course and the weight loss will resume!

    Fluctuations

Fluctuations are a part of life regardless of what we weigh. Water, constipation, diarrhoea, diet, hormones, etc. all can cause our weight to fluctuate a couple of pounds over a day or couple of days. If we ate exactly the same thing, pooped & peeed the same amount & did the exact same activity every day then our weight would likely stay the same day to day but we don’t. You’ll likely work out what your usual fluctuation cycle is & what affects it. As long as your fluctuation cycles still follow a downward weight loss trend you’re golden.
