The plane trip home was also my biggest concern. I went to Dr. Almanza who also keeps you three nights altho you could stay longer if you wanted or needed to. The first day or two after surgery, I was thinking about changing my flights and going home over a two day period, even tho it was only two 2+ hour flights. I was traveling alone and felt very tired. By the third day, I felt so much better and was so excited to go home. I had made my reservations with Southwest; I think they are about the only airline that allows you to change flights without a penalty. The unused portion stays as a credit for one year or you can just change your flight and pay for any difference in fares. I did splurge at the last minute at the airport and cancel my flight home on SW and book a first class seat on a nonstop Alaska flight. It was the best thing I did. The larger, more comfy seat made a huge difference. I travel alot and that was my first time in first class. Kinda dumb since I couldn't take advantage of the free drinks and nicer meals! LOL I had packed very light and only had one carryon. I didn't have any problems walking thru the airport at all. I think alot of it is also mental and the more positive you are, the better you will feel. I drank watered down apple juice and ate yogurt on the flight home. Hot tea would have been good also tho. I have used it often to settle my stomach anytime it is a little upset. Good luck! You will love the results!

how often do you experience pain?
ipenavs replied to bandedshopgirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am new to the site. I have the same problems. I was banded 4/17/2005. It really does not matter what I eat, plain non-fat yogurt to chicken, fish. I have found that it depends upon the time of day, sometimes. In the morning my stomach is bloated, like pms bloating. I have to stick to protien shakes until after being awake and moving around a couple of hours. It makes it hard to get in enough protien. Other times I have problems in the evening. I think this is related to wanting to eat too fast. 3 bites into my meal and I am wishing I hadn't started. I push away my food and hope I do not get sick. Last last couple of times, it was almost spontanious. Yikes! I sure am putting my boyfreind through the wringer. -
Types of yogurt for full liquid phase
agirlnamedfrankie posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today I graduate to the full-liquids phase, woohoo! My info packet says that for the full liquids phase (2 weeks for me): Is a milk based diet which includes foods that are liquid or semiliquid and high in Protein, like cream Soups made with non fat milk, yogurt, fruit shakes with non fat milk. I'm starting to look at some yogurts and see that the Fage and Chobani plain have 7g sugar/carbs and anything with flavor has 14-15g of carbs and Dannon Light & Fit has 7-9g of sugar/carbs (but with flavors!). Although there are no guidelines listed in my packet, I'm assuming that I should be keeping low on the sugar here, right? Plain greek yogurt is pretty brutal for me, although I know I can get some of the flavored syrups and use that but the Dannon sounds okay. What types of yogurt did you eat early on? How much sugar was okay and did you have any reactions? -
OK so that didnt work because last night after hubbie came to bed he pulled out a jumbo size of peanut M&M's and in stead of having like 3 or 4 and being happy I ate like 3 or 4 handsfull. It was only after the binge ended that I woke up out of the daze and remembered what I had just written an hour ago. I am super lame. I need to throw away the bag and not have anything at home, I am not in a place where I can just have one and be OK. So today I have been good, a yogurt & flax for breakfast. Blueberries & strawberries for snack we took our son out to lunch today so we both had a 1/4 of a hamburger for lunch and he had the half...now tonight for dinner ... pork loin & veggies.

Mariposa, if you are down a size at least go buy some tight jeans. I think it will make you feel better about what you have lost, it helped me anyway!! I had another good day and we are headed into the evening now....6.45pm allmost bewitching hour for me. Today I had a yogurt for Breakfast, a shake for lunch, 4 strawberries for a snack and turkey Pasta for dinner. Lots of lemon juice Water (trying to flush all the fat out). So I will keep my fingeres crossed for tonight!!!

Oh, it's soft and creamy (I added broth and greek yogurt, pureed onions, eggs, zucchini....) it's been fine the first two weeks. I guess today was an 'off' day for me.

Too much too soon?
GassyGurl replied to kristin_pasley's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many consider yogurt basically a slider food. At first, I was measuring 3oz, but now that I'm six weeks out, I eat the 5.3oz container because it's convenient and I got bored with the same flavor. When it comes to other stuff like meat, I can barely eat 3oz. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Well this morning was fruit and yogurt for 160cal. Skipping lunch as I am not hungry and we are having a big bbq later this afternoon, company hits at 4. I wanted to save my calories for a nice little piece of a fruit tart that I bought for desert tonight.

Post Op Pics - 4 Months Out
KateMarie replied to JG407's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your story is very inspiring. I am 25 days post op. I lost 18lbs preop, 11lbs by 11 days postop and then bam... Stalled. I've lost 1.5lbs in 2 weeks. I am on full liquids consisting of 3 protien drinks and 2 yogurts a day. It's so disappointing to be on such a restrictive diet and not lose the weight. The nutritionist tells me it's normal. At this point, I regret having the procedure done. Please share any advice that you may have. Thanks! -
Are you making sure that you are eating protien rich foods, like soft meats, cheeses, and eggs? One thing my NUT told me to buy was unflavored protien...I usually add it to some low fat pudding or yogurt and it turns my yogurt from being 13g of protien to 23 grams of protien.... It was a good investment....also I like Injury strawberry sorbet protien powder and if I see I'm not going to meet my Protein numbers (which is 60 too) I mix a scoop of that with 8oz of crystal light lemonade and have a 8oz strawberry lemonade drink that I really like... the lastest thing I have been experimenting with is with Jerky...I have to eat it slow of course (6 wks out) but I found one that's 80 cal and 14g of protien.... What Vitamin do you take?? I take the Celebrate chewables and like them....they are expensive, but I'm worth it!

How do you know when you're full?
Holly5.3 replied to JAnnette's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At a little over 3 months, for me there is no fullness or emptiness, for that matter! When I over-eat, the nonstop burping starts and then the food wants to come up. Sometimes you can fight the urge, depending on what you ate and how much you over-ate, sometimes you can't! It happens when I forget about my sleeve then take a bite of something carelessly (watching tv, or just distracted) then I'm like, 'Why did I just eat that?' burp...burp! That's why I sometimes just have a safe food for dinner like a yogurt or cottage cheese. I can't take the discomfort when I eat a normal meal sometimes. -
Cottage Cheese
CelticHarpist replied to enigmachik's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc's guidelines have it added weeks 3-5 or soft stage. Perhaps you could zip it through a blender to make it more mushy? I ate yogurt without fruit during my mushy stage. Blended cott cheese would be simliar? Maybe you could ask a dietician about that. I first ate cottage cheese the first day of my 3rd week as I craved it, too. Tasted great! -
Breakfast is either 1% cottage cheese with fruit, plain non fat Greek yogurt with stevia and a piece of fruit, 2 pieces of turkey sausage or bacon with a sunny side up egg or my "treat" once a week is old fashioned oat meal or cream of wheat with cinnamon.

My fav way to get protein post op: Vanilla protein powder, 1/2 cup soy milk, 1/2 cup water and a packet of Starbucks Via Instant Decaf, shaken so it doesn't get frothy. Vanilla protein powder, 1 cup soy milk, shaken so it doesn't get frothy. Unjury Chicken Protein Powder: Not my fav taste, but easy to travel with and the only thing I could tolerate immediately post-op. Greek Yogurt: The Fage 0 has 23 grams of protein per cup. Thin it with water and blend with a little orange juice ( about 1/8 cup) a couple of frozen berries, and some Splenda. I could do about 1/2 cup of yogurt like that within a week of surgery. Others like the fruit flavored, plain, and clear protein options, but I didn't care for any of them myself. Best wishes on your journey. Lynda

Post-op diet at work
Sophie74656 replied to Mikibi77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you're going onto soft foods you could bring some cottage cheese or some greek yogurt -
I am eating roughly 1100 calories a day. Is this normal I feel as if I have stretched my stomach already. I Followed the diet, and started eating soft solids, but I feel that I can eat too much comfortably. I have not experienced any issues like most others. I don’t have to eat slowly as I am able to eat fast with no problems. i can eat a 5 oz yogurt in one setting in probably 5 minutes. I have lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks. I believe that i will be the exception. I’m terrified right now I think I am eating too much. anyone have this problem or am I the only 1?

2 weeks post op and no restriction
Woodstock girl replied to vikeetingsgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's normal to not feel much restriction the first several weeks following surgery. I sure can identify with that feeling that you need to eat something. When that urge hit me so strong I couldn't stand it anymore, I cooked some Cream of Wheat that I had put two scoops of chocolate Protein powder in, so it tasted like Malto Meal. Yum! Just make it kind of soupy -- you don't want to risk slippage of your band. One time I tossed in a sliced banana and cooked it with the Cream of Wheat. After being on liquids, I never had anything so good! Or try a small jar of baby meat. You will probably need to salt it, but it will taste real good. You should not be eating bread this early in the game - that is very risky! You could microwave a little frozen strawberries or blueberries, mash them up real well and add some skim ricotta cheese or greek yogurt and some artificial sweetner. Eat it slowly with a baby spoon. Make it last at least 15 to 20 minutes. I also had no problem with scrambled egg when I was supposed to be on liquid. You generally will lose a lot weight on the liquid diet because the lack of bad carbs may put your body into Ketosis. When I hit that stage, I was losing a pound a day. You can tell if you are in Ketosis because you will have a horrible taste in your mouth that you can't get rid of, and you may feel nauseated. Ketosis is how people lose so much weight who are on the Atkins and other low carb diets. It's okay to lose weight like that for a little while, but when I couldn't take it anymore, I ate a can of potato soup to take myself out of ketosis. Since I didn't feel any restriction the first weeks after surgery, my doctor gave me my first fill on my one-month followup. It helped a lot. Then he gave me my 2nd fill yesterday on my 6 week visit. I'm having a little trouble with too much restriction I think, because I'm having trouble even drinking Water. I have to eat and drink standing up, so I may have to go get the doc to take a little out of the band. Hang in there. Time will pass quickly. It's important that you let yourself heal before adding too many solid foods. Try one thing at a time to see what you can tolerate. It's different for everyone. -

I can't speak for people in weight loss mode, but I know a ton of people in maintenance who eat protein pancakes. They use protein powder instead of flour, artificial sweetener (if any sweetener at all, that is), eggs, baking powder, unsweetened almond milk - sometimes cottage cheese or yogurt - and put sugar free syrup on them. I make them sometimes and top them with Greek yogurt, too, for extra protein. Nothing in those that is particularly bad. I suppose if they make you crave the real thing, then yea, but.... (of course the calories might be too high for those in weight loss mode, but not if you're in maintenance, unless you're making gigantic ones or eating a ton of them or something.. -

I stick to very simple things, I’d have stuck to shakes for breakfast but because of dysphasia thinner liquids aren’t going off too well for me but I still do the occasional Koia RTD and I my evening coffee so I’m trying to figure things out. I like to do PEScience protein powder in TwoGood yogurt. I don’t need big variety. But change a few things up as I can get them or are available to me. and keep them handy either shelf stable or freezer. I’m a creature of habit. Not much food appeals to me. I keep it simple. Some days it’s small meals some days it’s just protein powder and yogurt and maybe some juice flavor protein. I did start to add 2.5 oz veggie burger and BariatricPal has protein mashed potato that pair well with it. I haven’t ordered it again yet. So I made a 2.5 oz veggie burger with a egg on top. just to add some veg. I just track my protein calories and weight each day and what I eat. I think we need to learn what works for our bodies and do it on a timeline that works for us. Slow is better than going too fast and rushing into “normal food” my nutritionist and surgeon were like why aren’t you eating normal food yet. Well A. I have medical issues and B, I’m not ready and C. I’ll do what I feel comfortable with. we all need to keep In sight why we went into this and not fall into habits that got us here. And slowly learn the new way of life for our bodies. Also I find it weird that some guidelines allow for a lot more carbs and sugar and moving faster into “normal foods” which can easily lead to failure ... my relationship with food is tenuous at best with having lost my proper ability to taste food years ago, weird food allergies, now dysphasia, issues with my damn sensitive esophagus so I have to eat foods that are easy to chew soft and I have very little energy to chew. I’ve been totally turned off by meat especially chicken. But salmon sashimi with wasabi was actually pretty good. I’ve always had issue with nausea ... I like vegetables but my body doesn’t seem to. I guess I will shut myself up. When we go on this weight loss journey we take a good hard look at our selves and we can’t just climb right back into our old way of doing things. Food is not everything.mits not the be all end all of existence. We eat to live not live to eat and it’s a hard lesson to learn. But yes we can allow our selves little things here and there. Like I put a little sf land o lakes whip on my yogurt ... but there’s no need to rush to “normal” rather, learn what your new normal is. And sometimes that changes moment to moment and day by day. -
Diet has another 4 days of 2 oz, clear liquids X 3 daily, and , then some small bits solid added, same 2 oz. X3 daily, which is my stage 2 it has no puree, but cut up 2 0z. meals of egg, yogurt and cottage cheese, week 2 add fish, week 3 add chicken, week 4 add beef and cheeses. On 1/22/13 work out higher number for protein working the same method. But no carbs, bread, cereal, or fruits, least or no sugars or fats all the way throuigh.

I pretty much did like @@Inner Surfer Girl did and skipped the whole puree stage. For me....puree meant soup, oatmeal, yogurt and other stuff. I could see myself allowing foods like mashed potatoes and knew that it would sabotage my weight loss efforts. I stayed on full liquids (Protein shakes) for 4 weeks instead. My surgeon had a weird schedule leading up to my surgery and he made it known to me well prior to my surgery which he was able to either do my sleeve "really soon".....or delay it a month. I opted for the "really soon as in next week option....please" and it all came together.......and it did so really fast. As a result.....my first follow up appointment was on day 6......and then the next appointment was at 4 weeks once he returned from his travels. He'd not discussed any other way of eating for me other than Protein shakes at the first appointment......and the NUT wouldn't disclose any further schedule other than to "follow the doctor's orders". I'm really glad I did it that way. Enjoy going out with your family. It's a really special time of year and we are all truly blessed if we can spend time with our family. Be glad they want to go out......this will keep you from having to cook or prepare meals for them. I remember wanting nothing.....and I mean NOTHING to do with the kitchen my first 6 weeks or so. Get a bowl of soup....and laugh at yourself stirring it around the bowl the entire meal after eating such a small amount. My surgeon told me on our second visit......"Get used to never finishing another meal again....especially in restaurants".

I am 5 months post-op and am struggling to get over 800 calories a day.. nutrirtionist told me I should be consuming 1100-1200 calories a day.. I can eat a 5oz yogurt in one sitting too but it takes me 25 min or so to eat it.. once I’m too full I get hiccups. I would just try to eat slower if I were you. There are times I feel like my stomach can hold more too but I definitely don’t over indulge like I used to!

Good carbs / Healthier food choices
Daisee68 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am just over 9 weeks out and just FINALLY feeling better and feel like I am turning a corner. (No vomiting in 8 days! YAY!) I had quite a bit of trouble with meats but likely because I wasn't chewing enough or eating too much so I have stayed with very soft foods that I knew I could tolerate and with that I don't feel like I am making the healthiest choices - just been focused on getting any food down and keeping it there and learning to stop when satisfied, eat slowly, etc. I am consuming around 500-600 calories per day with 80-90g Protein (thanks to shakes). I am not crazy about cooked mushy vegetables though I do like raw veggies but I know my system is not quite ready to tolerate them. I do love fruit - especially berries but I know I am not quite ready for those either. I have had a small bit of banana a few times (in a shake) and a peach slice (in Water no sugar added) and tolerated both very well. For what it's worth, I am getting in about 1/4 to 1/3 cup per meal which is pretty much 2 Tbsp (1/2 ounce) of meat (shaved turkey or tilapia) and then another 2 to 3 Tbsp of cheese usually. (Most of my protein is coming from dairy - cheese, yogurt, etc.) I did successfully eat 1/2 a Quest bar today for Breakfast for the first time and I was very happy about that! I sure wish I could move on to nuts and Jerky but not confident I will chew it will enough yet to tolerate it. Oh and I have had scrambled eggs but honestly I just don't like them that much unless they have salsa on them. (Seem to be handling spicy just fine.) I was only able to eat about 1/4 of the egg before I just couldn't get in anymore. (Cold eggs are even nastier than hot eggs and eating a small bite every 90 seconds or so gets the eggs cold very quick!) I have a meeting with NUT on Monday but was wondering if anyone had suggestions that I might ask her if I can progress to. I think she has told me a few more weeks at least before raw veggies (never craved cucumber so much in my life! ) I am not frustrated or bored with my food choices at all. Not struggling with head hunger. Just wanting to make sure I am really working on healthy food choices in addition to very tiny food choices.... -
Getting sleeved October 25th!

I was sleeved on 7.19.16 i lost 20 lbs prior to surgery. I started eating smaller portions 5x a day. Each meal was 15 carbs our less carb master yogurt, premier shakes 1-2x a day. And a shake is a meal. It really helps with the liquid diet prior to surgery. My starting weight was 283 at surgery day it was 263 and current weight is 235 Good luck!
