  1. Hello! I have never joined a forum before, have been searching for one & so glad I came across BariatricPal. I am looking for some advice, suggestions, support, etc. I had gastric bypass surgery on July 25th 2012 & have lost a total of 114 pounds, 8 pant sizes, 1 shoe size & any/all health issues!! Life is pretty great, but I am starting to get nervous about gaining some weight back. I'm one of those people that reads all those worst-case scenerios & starts to panic - I do not want to be a statistic. I want to succeed, not go backwards. I have read that gaining some weight is normal but am interested in some ideas as to what is normal. The lowest I got was 156, my surgeon didn't think it was a good idea for me to be less than 165 so I was thrilled as the scale continued to drop & my waist line continued to shrink! I am religious when it comes to the scale; I weigh myself every morning before I get in the shower & sadly, depending on what figure stares back at me, determines my mood for that day. The past few months I have seen a weight gain of 1 pound here, 2 there, 3 lost, 1 gained & so on. This morning I stepped on the scale & it said 166...I was horrified. I called & spoke to a nurse & she said that was a normal amount of weight to gain, considering I ended up lower than my anticipated weight loss. That doesn't make me feel any better...wish it did. Just seeing that I'm 1 pound over than my original goal scares the crap out me. Instead of crying, I finished getting ready for work & hauled out the old food journal, Protein powder & determination. Also, my husband & I are trying for our third (and final) baby...I thought I was mentally preparing myself for the expected weight gain w/pregnancy but considering how upset I was this morning I'm not even close to being mentally prepared. I guess I'm still considered a newbie; not 2 years out yet so I welcome any suggestions, similar stories, etc. Thanks!!!
  2. I’m feeling a little depressed of lately and have been eating my emotions away.. I’m 1 year post gastric sleeve i only lost a total of 70lbs i was hoping to loose at least a 100 or more based on most people i know lost 100 or more. I only lost 70 but i know why because I’ve been eating off way off... In addition i gained like 6-7lbs i was 268 now I’m 274.i started at 243 I have to get back in track i got really excited that i can eat and been snacking on a lot of nuts plus i wanna work out more haven’t done it consistently since surgery.. i also wanna do the keto diet have anyone tried keto or intermittent fasting after gastric sleeve... I know i ‘m my own downfall when it comes to my diet!!!! I’ve been thru so much with surgery and complications i dont wanna gain it back i need some motivation and some inspiration... Feeling so defeated

My Husband Thinks I'm Copping Out

I don't know about anyone else but I know when I was laying in the hospital bed in pain barfing my brains out (not literally), I was envisioning someone coming up to me and saying " You (I) took the easy way out". I envisioned myself literally punching them in the face lol. IMO the easy way out would of been to remain obese or continue crash dieting, heck I could eat whatever I wanted. Of course weight gain sucks but remaining obese would of been a lot easier than having to change my diet through surgery and gosh don't make me vent about my recovery lol. Surgery was definitely my last attempt at losing weight and the thought of possibly dying and never seeing my kids ever again was by no means the easy way out. Unfortunately some people do die from wls and I'm pretty confident in saying that most people that end up having wls, they have years of crash dieting under their belt or yrs of trying to change there way of eating. *I have no idea what sent me on a tangent lol. I should be in bed* OP I wouldn't worry about convincing your husband or anyone for that matter of why you are having the surgery. This is your life and you have to do what you feel is right for yourself. He may change his view after you have surgery and start losing the weight or he may not. My husband seems very ENTHUSIASTIC about me losing the weight and I'm like huh? He seems over joyed with having me lose the weight but I guess he kept those feelings secret from me because I though he'd be scared of losing me if I became skinny lol. Men are weird

    Bra size

I didn't think about needing new bras! I don't want to lose all of my boobies. I hope my weight loss is proportional like my weight gain has been. ... but I can lose all of my stomach!

    not enough protein

Not consuming enough protein will not stop your weight process, it will under nourish your muscles and cause you to lose muscle mass. Do you monitor your menstrual cycle closely, as your weight gain can be water weight in PMS mode. Is it just fluid your intake problem or can you eat mushy foods? Maybe adding unflavored protein powder your meals can help up your protein intake.
  6. so could not eating enough protein stop weight loss? I'm having trouble getting anywhere close to the amount of protein im suppose to be taking in. I'm having trouble meeting my fluid intake as well... just wondering if this is whats causing my stall (actually 2lb weight gain)! at 4 weeks.
  7. AT 5+ years, I am still a work in progress. I still maintain at 55% EWL. I gained over 35 pounds in the last year+. Easy as pie. Literally. I can eat anything, and in large amounts if spread over time. I still do not drink with meals unless I have breakfast out which is not often. I reach for food when emotional or stressful situations come up. I know it... I watch it, I work on it. I mostly write down what I eat, and watch Protein, but those weeks that I don't, I gain. It is not easy to get off. Yes the sleeve still works. I eat less at any sitting... protein first really makes me feel full faster. I continue exercise, and recommitted again.... just finished the 5 day "pouch" test with a 5 pound loss and a lowering of the Carb addiction. One step at a time. The head has to be in the game, just like before weight loss surgery. The sleeve helps... it is a tool, just like they say, and has helped me to maintain at least 50 pound loss for 5 years. I had a weight gain at 2+ years and worked to get to goal after that... so I know I can do it. I think for me, this is something I need to watch and plan every day.... when I don't I gain. I am very happy I got the sleeve though.... VERY HAPPY. Kindle, so true! I didn't see that. @@feedyoureye - Is putting on the weight post-op much easier than it was pre-op? During the week I'm pretty structured but on the weekends I tend to be a little more relax. I normally eat whatever I want, but I still have been losing weight. I think it's because I walk an hour each day. I'm still in the pre-op stage but I was recently approved for the Bypass. I'm thinking of having the approval changed to the VSG because the RNY scares me.

    Band to Sleeve; Weight Gain?

weight gain is also a concern of mine after ridding the band.
  9. After two failed lap bands, I am scheduled to have the band removed and revised to a sleeve. Despite my best efforts, my surgeon insists that I have the band removed, allow 3 months 'rest' time for my stomach then have the sleeve procedure. Has anyone had the same experience and how did you manage/control your weight over that time? I'm terrified I will gain back majority, if not all of the 60lbs I've lost this far in that 3 months. Any story's or tips from fellow banders/ex banders/current sleevers would be appreciated!

    Bread/pasta question

Bread, Pasta, and sugar is what fueled my binging and weight gain, with an incessant appetite and non-stop hunger. With my calories limited at 800, I need to be diligent in using those 800 for Protein and veggies. So, there is no interest now in turning back. No more grain products for me. I do not want to open that door.
  11. @@mmy, When I first enquired about WLS last year, May 2015, I was at 32 BMI. I was already freaking out re my rapid weight gain, of 28 kg ..... I never had this problem before until 2014 Routine tests showed thyroid disease, so I had to put off my WLS for about 9 months, till my thyroid stabilised ..... By late February 2016, I managed to pile on another 12-13 kg, and my weight ballooned to 101 kg , BMI 37.1 My surgeon would have operated on me at 32 BMI, to prevent future health risks and to help my deteriorating emotional state. Unfortunately, with my Hyperthyroid (Graves Disease), it was too risky to be operated on. All up, I put on 41 kg (90 Ibs) in a 2 year period (was always slim before). If I did not have this surgery, I probably would be Double my normal weight now ..... I felt I was the only person on the planet that was obese with Hyperthyroid .... even though I now know that I had this disease most of my life, and it kept me slim until 2014. I have no regrets, I lost good amount of weight 7 weeks post op, for my height. I still have a long way to go, but each day is bit better .... My NUT revised my goal weight to 68-70 kg, and I was Not happy with that. I downgraded my goal weight to 65 kg (from 60 kg) I am starting to look better, my face is changing, my aches and pains and other health issues with my rapid weight gain are improving, I am happier, and life is getting better. Good Luck and Best Wishes

    weight gain

It would be nice if you would have posted more than just "Weight Gain in 3 Days". That doesn't mean much to anyone. Are you pre-op or Post-op? what was your weight when you started, what is it now. What diet are you on?

    Band Vs Diet

I wonder that sometimes when I am on track and doing well like I am now. I think "what if I made these life changes before" I don't think they would have stuck. Eventually I would get sick of whatever diet or change I made and revert back to my old habits. With the band, it is there to protest. It won't let me over eat. There are plenty of times where i had to stop eating physically because of the band, where otherwise I would have kept going because something tasted good, willpower be damned. The band is a constant reminder of my goal. And when I do fall off the bandwagon now, my weight gain is slower. I came around waaaay before I would have had I not been banded. So I definitely know the band is more helpful than just dieting alone.

    CRAVINGS ....

Don't do it! The number one driver of weight gain is juice and sugared drinks. You need to find something that works for you. Try Water with fruit infused in it if you don't like crystal lite. Used lemons, limes, cucumbers, raspberries, strawberries and leave your water sit in the refrigerator with the fruit. It will not be sweet but it should quench your thirst. Honestly I cannot do any of those non sweetener drinks either so I had to get very used to drinking water. It is all I drink and is the most important thing in your diet besides Protein. I would hate to see you sabotage yourself. Try doing things to get your mind off of it. I crave chocolate a lot and have to entertain myself or convince myself that I would rather have nuts or Jerky. If I do that often enough my brain believes it and I can move past it. Good luck to you!

    Mirror, Mirror...

@@Swampdoggie I was that way, years ago, before all the surgeries and weight gain got the better of me. Then it kind of flip-flopped, and here I am. Not looking. Not liking what I see. But we are working on changing this (who is WE? Me, myself, and I...we're in it together, for better or worse!). Up and down the stairs I go again!

    Baby..oh Baby!!

I don't know why they told you to stay away from the Protein shakes, but I could guess on a couple reasons. Most of them are loaded with artificial sweetners. A recent article in Consumer Reports suggested that many of them are contaminated with heavy metals that are toxic as well. I did not want to lose weight too quickly after surgery (primarily because I think you lose a lot of muscle mass and less fat if you lose too quickly), and my doctor told me I could drink Ensure. Ask your doctor about the liquid meal supplements like Ensure and Boost (puddings as well) that are higher in carbs/calories and that are designed to promote weight gain or provide adequate nutrition to people who are having problems eating. My guess is that those would help you get in enough extra calories and carbs to slow your weight loss. Also, plan for foods that are calorie dense. Those will usually be higher fat foods like Tiffy mentioned Peanut Butter and cheese.
  18. I am a firm believer of everything in moderation. I have failed too many diets because I would deprive myself of something I wanted, then couldn't stand it anymore and would binge like crazy. I got the sleeve because I want to eat like "normal people". If "normal people" want chips, they have a few and are satisfied. That is what I do now too, as opposed to eating a whole bag like I used to do. My partner is a nutritionist and he is a firm believer of this too. It is a matter of living a healthier lifestyle, making healthier choices and when you want a treat, have it, enjoy it, don't over indulge and don't beat yourself up over it. If any of you look at my diary on my fitness pal you will see, I eat like a "normal person". If I want ice cream, I have it, but I do go with the low fat kind now and about half a cup is all I need. And yes, on the weekends I will partake of an adult beverage or two as well. Now that I have my back problems somewhat under control, have recovered from the weight gain as a result of not being able to move much and it has been a while since my steroid injections, I am back losing a healthy two pounds a week and beyond happy with that. I feel good, I have great energy, a great man in my life and am happy, exactly what I had hoped for. Sent from my iPad using VST
  19. First and foremost, wanted to say a huge congrats to all who have made the decision to get surgery. There's a misconception that it is the "easy way out" and given the research I've needed to do in order to even get this far, I know it is no where NEAR easy. So congrats to y'all. A little bit about me: I've been struggling with my weight ever since I was in high school but most significantly since I entered college. Of course there's the "freshman 15" but I gained about 35 pounds that year alone. Two years later my boyfriend of four years past away and that set me on a depression that lead to even more weight gain. I've been unhappy with myself and completely lost self confidence. After a frank and honest discussion with my family, we decided that more extreme measures needed to be taken as diet and exercise wasn't working. Unfortunately, my health insurance will not cover the surgery (due to the plan we have) and it's too much to pay out of pocket in the US. So I have made the decision to go forward with surgery in Mexico and have already taken the first step in submitting the questionnaire. For context, I'm 24(soon to be 25) Female Cw:332 Height: 5"6 Long term goal weight: 140 I hope to have RNY Gastric Bypass Surgery. I am excited and nervous to begin this journey, so any and all tips, words of encouragement, advice or information any of you have will be greatly appreciated!! Looking forward to being a part of the community here!
  20. I only had a 3 month diet and I actually gained weight 2 of the 3 months. At my last appointment I lost what I gained but it was still over my starting weight. My insurance still approved my surgery even with the weight gain.
  21. Hi everyone! I am in the six month pre-op period and have a dr. Appointment this week. I have gained a couple of lbs since my last dr appointment and am curious if his happened to anyone else and what happened...does the six months start over? Do they give you a pass as long as you lose weight the remaining months of the initial six months? I’m so extremely disappointed in myself and have had a stressful month (not an excuse I know)...this is just stressing me out even more. Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance! :)

    My Story

OK.. so I just found this site and I think this might be a good thing for me. Its been a wild couple of years for me. I got a virus in my heart and wound up with a cardiac defibrillator. I was off work for 6 months in total. My blood pressure was giving me grief, way too low, then it would spike.. so my cardiologist did some investigations and discovered I had an adrenal tumour. It was secreting way too much adrenalin. So I had a Lap Adrenalectomy. No one told me that a side effect would be a weight gain. Yeah, I am older---55, so I anticipated that losing weight was not going to be fun.. but I was shocked at how much weight and how fast I gained it. Earlier this year, I was the heaviest I had ever been..310 . Life was really weighing down on me... unhappy marriage, unhappy with myself.. I started thinking about a sleeve.. One of the surgeons ( did I tell you I am an OR nurse?), so one of the surgeons who does WLS did a presentation for the local OR nursing group. It was a life changer for me. He doesn't do everyone who asks for it. You have got to really commit! His criteria? Lose 10% of your body weight. Keep a journal of your food, exercise, water. My cardiologist put me onto Fitness Pal... what a great site. I even went to Australia for a month and did not gain weight! Came home, kicked my husband out ( cheater) and got busy. I had an appointment to see my surgeon at the end of July. OK!! Since then I have lost 25 pounds.. down to 285. I am really excited to have the LSG done. And excited to find this site to help me along the way!!

    Third band

Day 4: In 2010 my band was replaced due to a slippage. I found it very hard to get back on track and did not feel that the band was working for me. After 12 months of fills and unfills, weight gain, reflux and the anxiety of missing food, I went to a new surgeon. My orginal Surgeon retired. The reason I was going through this was my band had slipped again. The surgery showed lots of adhesions and my organs were enlarged. My new surgeon removed my band and I had to wait 3 months before I could get a new one. Now with a new band in I am now starting the weight loss journey again. Wish me luck I now have 17kg to lose and feel a little lost and unsure. Getting use to fluids is very hard. Will keep you posted.
  24. Every insurance is different, so this is a good question to ask your doctor's office on your next visit!!!! My nutritionist was mostly interested in my following her recommendations! Protein intake first, followed by "good carbs," i.e. healthy vegetables while avoiding sugar, butter, fats, etc. The goal seems to be to see if you can follow a diet that puts protein intake first, with good carbs second. Fluid intake was another big deal for the NUT. Understanding portion sizes was another thing my NUT pushed. She didn't seem to care about weight gains or losses, but that is what she emphasized over my six visits. You and your NUT need to talk to ensure you are on the same page regarding your nutrition and calories over this required supervised nutritional period.
  25. I had my first dietician appointment 2 weeks ago and my first psych appointment yesterday. I see both of them again in 2 weeks and they both want me to have made a lot of the dietary changes that I'll need to make post-op by then. I was doing pretty well with weighing out portions, not drinking for 30 minutes after meals, eating foods in the correct order, chewing each bite thoroughly, setting my fork down between bites, etc. for the first week after seeing the dietician. But I didn't lose a single pound that week and it just seemed pointless. So then I had a week-long food funeral, and it was pretty bad. Part of the problem is that I accidentally lost 4 pounds in the week between getting my paperwork in and seeing the surgeon and dietician for the first time. It pisses me off because I wanted to go in at my heaviest and not have my BMI barely be high enough. And now I'm supposed to lose about 10 pounds in the next couple of weeks and it seems impossible. It is more likely that I'll gain that 4 pounds back again, and my surgeon said absolutely no weight gain is allowed. I'm just feeling discouraged right now. I decided to go back to Protein smoothies today instead of trying to allow myself reasonable amounts of real food. Does anyone else feel like they can do a really restrictive diet without too much trouble, but really struggle with trying to eat normally but moderately? I feel like if I have any sweets or anything made with white flour, I simply can't stop eating it. Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App
