    SO SCARED

    You might lose your hair. But what will you gain? Why are you having this surgery? Would you be willing to lose your hair, if it meant adding 20 years to your life? I lost half of my hair when I did keto and it never grew back. I might lose the other half of my hair after I have surgery. The way I see it, my hair is a small price to pay for better health and a longer life. Would I be willing to be bald, if it meant being able to see my grandchildren? You betcha. The people whose opinions matter to me, will still love me even if I don't have hair. Everyone else can kiss my grits. I'll invest in some fun wigs. My husband can have a different woman, every night! LOL! But, chances are, my hair will grow back - and yours will too.

    The stress, change of diet, weight loss, hormonal changes, etc. accelerate your natural hair loss cycle. So the hair the you lose you were going to lose anyway. And yes your new hair is still growing but just at is usual rate. This is the same sort of reaction some women experience after child birth & if you are experiencing a lot of stress. The hair you’re losing is already dead so taking supplements & additional ‘hair growth’ vitamins aren’t going to save it. (Doesn’t matter how much fertiliser you use you can’t save a dead plant.). The additional supplements may only benefit new growth. Many of us cut our hair if it was long. The hair loss isn’t as noticeable & it takes less time for the new growth to catch & be the same length. Keep meeting your protein goal, take your multi vitamins. And don’t worry too much about it - you don’t need the additional stress & anxiety which could only make it worse. Some temporary hair loss is a small price to pay for your weight loss. All the best.

    69 yrs old and unsure..

    I am in my 60's and BMI is at least 40 right now. Did you all have to follow the protocol of medical weight loss first, and have all the tests that I hear about? Trying to get an idea of how long it may be between my first visit on 10/11 and possible surgery date. I have had most of the tests that I've been reading that are required, except the psychologist.

    Smelly farts

    Yes I admit my farts are definitely different smelling. Extra stinky and I had diarrhea for the first week. I stopped with the senokot laxative I was prescribed at night. I helped solidify my poops. Remember your gut and intestines are in a changing faze. It will get better. If you have extreme pain then please call your dietitian and let them know or call your doctor. Wishing good health on your weight-loss journey. Remember we are here for you!

    I cheated - now what?

    There is some very good advice . You are not alone in this. I'm 20 day post op and I have what I call fat brain. I eat not because I'm hungry. I eat because my brain is yet to resolve my habits. I eat late and too much.it has been my issue for 30 years and it will take time to relearn better habit. One thing that I'm doing is to eat better protein at night and have suger free snacks for night. Sugar free jello or pudding and or no added sugar Greek yogurt . Another thing I'm trying as of two days is I put on a timer and eat two small spoonfuls every five minutes. I have tossed out all temptations and snacks in house. If I'm learning new eating habits then everyone in my home is also. No chips, no pop, ice cream or junk food. It is a great time to teach kids the importance of cooking healthy and learning portion control. It is not an easy road but it can be done and you will need support from family and friends.     Blood Pressure down

    You're at the low end of normal. As stated, if you have no symptoms, rejoice! Your heart is having to work a lot less then it used to. Note that it's pretty common for bariatric surgery patients to have lower than average BP. It happens because we're dropping fat so quickly. As we lose weight, there is less need for the blood volume you previously had, so you actually lose blood volume. (No, you don't bleed, it's absorbed naturally.) What does not drop as quickly are the size of your veins and arteries. They are bigger than normal because they are used to having to contain higher blood volume. At this point, it's simple physics. Less fluid in a closed system will be under lower pressure than more fluid. For most people, this will adjust over time. Some people unfortunately do end up with hypotension, either temporarily or permanently. If you do start having symptoms: Make sure you stay hydrated. Up your salt intake, especially if you're not getting much. As you probably know, salt raises blood pressure. An increase in salt consumption might help. Do be careful however. For some people, this carries certain risks. Talk to your doctor -- especially if you are still on high BP meds, you probably need to stop them -- there are also treatments available for low blood pressure.

    It actually is quite common & for most it’s temporary. I’ve never had an issue with my blood pressure, 120/80, regardless what I weighed. Though I did always have a tendency towards a low BP - a family thing - where it would drop & I’d get light headed, loss of vision at odd times. Now my BP is low all the time & I experience orthostatic hypotension (postural pressure drops) daily. (And a lower heart rate too.) The vision loss, slight throb in my head, is just part of my life when getting up (from sitting, lying & crouching/kneeling), doing too much, etc. I think carrying weight kept my BP at a healthy level & the low BP is actually normal for me. My GP isn’t too concerned. I guess because I manage it. Keep your fluids up, add a little salt too your diet. Take your time getting up giving your heart a chance to get the blood back up to your head.

    69 yrs old and unsure..

    Sleeved on 9-1 and turned 71 on 9-6. No regrets at all. Easy recovery, no pain, no gastric problems, should be off blood pressure and cholesterol meds soon. I have lost 22 pounds so far. It has been great! Looking forward to continuing weight loss and improved health.
  9. So my blood pressure is ranging with the top number in the 90's and bottom number in the 60's. My surgeon isn't worried since I have no other symptoms but my "in nursing school" hubby doesn't like it at all. He's worried I'm going to pass out or something. Anyone else experience a drop in BP when they lost weight? I'm down 89lbs.i never had high BP to begin with. I used to joke with my doctor that if I came in and it was high get me to the ER ASAP because something is horribly wrong. Just wondering. Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. Oh wow - I also cannot go to bed hungry. I thought I was alone in this (seems so weird but I just cannot sleep if I am). I would rather be hungry all day than risk not being full at bedtime. So - as soon as I could eat solid food after my sleeve I purposely hoarded calories to eat at bedtime. Probably 20% plus of my daily allowance. And ideally carby - so, porridge with fruit, or toast, etc. I kind of relate this to my night owl metabolism generally. I know that morning people (larks) mightn't understand that but as a fellow night owl I totally totally do. Chronotypes are real and they have an impact on weight loss.
  11. I've used a CPAP for about 12 years now. I'll echo what @summerseeker said. You may need to try different masks to find what works for you. Because I'm a side/stomach sleeper, big masks didn't work for me, but I found that this works pretty well: https://www.resmed.com/en-us/sleep-apnea/cpap-parts-support/sleep-apnea-full-products-list/cpap-masks/airfit-p10/ I've used one of these exclusively for about 10 years. As an aside, I'm really hoping to be cured of the sleep apnea as I continue to lose weight. The plan right now is for me to get a new sleep study ~6 months post surgery. Fingers crossed.

    Weight loss goals

    Awwh man, these are so awesome! Seeing these makes me even more excited because I will get there too. The horseback riding one, I've rode horses many many times, took lessons and my aunt has always had them. I have never been "skinny" and I feel like that is why my aunt barely asked me to go for a ride with her. I dont know what it feels like to ride a horse as a "skinny" person and that is one of my goals and I always have to tell them my weight before signing up for lessons so they can pick a horse for me according to my weight. It's embarrassing having other people knowing your weight. One of my weightloss rewards is to take jumping lesson which is something I've always wanted to do, but not at my weight. (I'm a western style riding girl, so it would also be very different riding english!) Another thing that ice always thought about is a relationship. I feel like no one wants to be with someone my size (I know there's lots of men that do) the ones who are interested, im usually not interested in them. I want marriage and I want more kids. I feel like if I lost the weight, a whole new dating world would open for me

    Weight loss goals

    Mine were much like yours. I wanted to fit in a bath tub. With my spouse; There were a couple other things to do with my spouse, but I won't go into detail. Stop asking ; I wanted to be able to ride the rides; Rode every coaster in Orlando, had a blast; I wanted to be able to sit anywhere worry free; This is amazing when I realize what I am doing. Kayaking, which I've done on vacation several times now; Horseback riding, which is something my spouse wanted to do together, which we have done several times; Running, just a 30 minute run. I did 5 marathons and got to run across the Golden Gate bridge; I wanted rolling over in bed not to be a huge 3 stage production that required planning and cleverly arranged ropes and pullies, or at least it seemed that way. Not even a thought now; I wanted to be able to go out in public and be anonymous, People used to run into things staring at me. Crowds of people would naturally part to get out of my way. Now I have to wade through crowds like everyone else. No one pays be any special attention anymore. The clothes thing has been amazing. I bought a lot of stuff just because I could. I had quite a list of 50 things I wanted to do after surgery. about 15-20 were related to weight and clothing size milestones, the rest were life things like the above. There were a couple things I realized I wasn't actually interested in doing when I got to the appropriate weight. Go figure. All these years later a lot of things are so normal for so long that I don't think about them. Occasionally, out of the blue, I realize I'm doing something that was once impossible. It's still cool.     October 2022 surgery support

    Devastated to say the least...surgery Monday 10th, but i have tested positive for Covid. 😞 Rescheduling the surgery. At least i have lost some weight through the LRD - every cloud has a silver lining.

If it's the same doctor who did your sleeve, then the post op diet and progression will likely be the same; if it's a different doctor, then it will be whatever they normally do, but usually the sleeve and bypass are treated the same (there's usually more difference between doctors' practices than there are between procedures.) While there are variations, you will probably be set back to much the way you were with your sleeve, and will evolve to eat similarly over time. Weight loss will not usually be as quick or as much (and may be disappointing if you are expecting a lot,) as you have already learned how to eat around a small stomach, and the size difference isn't nearly as much as between a virgin WLS and natural stomach.
  16. What is everyone's goals after weight loss? Mine are; To be able to keep up with my son. To have more energy. To be healthier. My weight actually embarrasses me and I do worry if people are making rude comments about it. So to be able to be confident. To not have to worry if a piece of clothing is going to be in my size. To finally work in a salon. (I swell up if I stand too long) To not swell up if I stand for a long time. If I go to a theme park, it's my goal to be able to fit in the rides without embarrassment. To take photos with my son again. Those are to name a few, what are yours?
  17. I was approved today for my revision. I had a sleeve done in 2017. HW 255, LW 160, CW 210 😒. Anyway, I’ve had this horrible GERD and put off my revision all through COVID, I have Barrett’s esophagus, I’ll vomit from the reflux, bad teeth, and sores in my throat. So I’m getting this done, pretty nervous!! So my questions are- (wish I asked my dr, I was so nervous at my appointment my mind was blank) what is the diet like compared to the sleeve? Same? What does the restriction feel like compared to having a sleeve? I still have some restriction but can eat way more than I could the first year out from my sleeve. I’m hoping for weight loss along with getting this GERD resolved. So this is a fresh start I’m grateful for!

    Fitness watch.

    I have a Fitbit charge 5. It's been reliable with my calories in and out as far as weight loss. Been trying the maintenance program the past month. So far so good. It helps with my sleep patterns and tells me how long I am in each of the sleep stages for the night, week, month. Also my heart rate variability, skin temperature...Etc. I like the ecg scan too. The battery lasts a week or more. I also like that I can set goals for steps or whatever. I don't have any other experience with any other watches but I am very happy with this one.

    What made you decide to have a WLS?

    I was in high school (late 90’s) and saw some kind of dateline/news special about bariatric surgery. By that point I was already doing diets with my mom. It had been in my mind since. Fast forward 20 years to 2019 and I had my appendix removed. At my post op appointment my surgeon (who also happened to be a bariatric surgeon- I didn’t know that when the hospital asked me if I had a surgeon I preferred. I chose him because he had previously saved my dads life) asked me if I had thought about weight loss surgery. I said I had and he recommended that I sign up for the program his office offered, so I did.

    Tips on what to expect first few weeks

    My only real advise for anyone having surgery is to just stick to your plan and TRUST the process. Especially for the first month post op your weight may do weird thing (stall or even go up) but this process does work. Just trust it and the weight will come off.
  21. Desire I feel the same!! Yesterday was 6 weeks, I’m in a stall at 25 pounds and I know I shouldn’t compare but we’re humans and it’s what we do. I am following to a T as well and I’m seeing others at 6 weeks or less eating sooo much more or such different things than what I’m eating, nearly same starting weight, and losing much more. Right now I can’t have any fruits, veggies, carbs, etc. I keep hearing to eat more calories but I guess diet culture has taught me against that for so many years it’s a hard concept. I’m doubting myself a lot which I know I should be proud of 25 pounds but I get in my own head. You’re not alone, and now either am I and there’s some comfort in that so thank you!

    Before and After Pics

    I’ve lost 60 lbs in just under 4 months. 🤗 liquids: all I drink is water (64 Oz) and I have 1 cup of coffee a day. I have lost my taste for coffee. I go through phases craving other things. I haven’t done Crystal Lite except for my first 2 weeks post op. I felt like the longer I drank it, my weight loss slowed. I have always noticed that about me and artificial sweeteners in steady, large amounts. on the liquid phase of post op, I had bone broth, sugar free jello, sugar free ice pops, AND water. 🤦🏻‍♀️ there is some recipe floating around on this site I think for mashed potatoes with cream of chicken soup and the lumps are strained out. It’s delicious and I was happy to have that for dinner every day. It’s all really a blur now. I had no appetite and I still dont, so I made sure I met hydration levels. When I was able to do that, I added in protein. I think I used Atkins because I detested Fairlife and Core and the others. The surgeon told me to be hydrated first and then concentrate on protein. Atkins has a 30 g of protein shake that I try to have once a day now. I know that I don’t eat anywhere near the calories I am suppose to, but I am simply not hungry and I take my vitamin with iron so I’m not going to worry about it. my biggest most constant craving is salad. 🤣🤣🤣 With a small amount of sugar free salad dressing and crisp lettuce, and white meat chicken (Panera), I’m good. I try to meet the protein numbers with Atkins Protein Wafer Crisp bars (1 a day). I read every single label before I buy anything, and I’m enjoying cooking for the first time in forever. Making things yourself is a great way to be sure you are getting what you need. Shrimp, salmon, egg white/egg salad are all things I enjoy. mom wracking my brain trying to remember 2 days post op. I know I was supposed to drink clear s/f Gatorade or something, but I was so nauseous (even with patches, etc) that I did ice pops, jello, and the next day I was able to graduate to broth, and protein shakes. I stayed on liquids for a long time-maybe 5-6 weeks because I wasn’t hungry, it was the dead of summer, and I didn’t feel like going on to the soft foods phase. Mashed potatoes were great, and I literally could not eat more than a tablespoon before I was full.

    8 weeks out and scared

    Only you know WHY you made the choices you made. If you don’t know why or are worried you will do it again you may want to consider a bariatric therapist to get to the bottom of things and get some coping tools that keep you from turning to food. I have heard many people on here swear by how much they have helped them. I know that I struggle with emotional eating and I am having a really hard time keeping my weight off (I am a year and a half out). I do not have anyone who specializes in bariatric therapy near me, unfortunately, but really wish I had the option to see someone. You have come so far already. Give yourself every tool available to you to succeed. You can do this.

    I use myfitnesspal. I've used it for a number of years and generally find it's the best and easiest to use. There are a couple of things you have to get used to: Anyone can add a new food, This can be a blessing if what you find in the database does not work for you. Don't find what you need? Add it. The downside is that some common foods have dozens of entries and a fair number of them will be wrong. The entries that have been verified as correct by staff have green checkmarks, so you'd be well advised to look for those. It's not as easy is log small portions accurately of some foods because not all entries have weights in grams (or even ounces). They may only have a "serving", so you're stuck estimating a percentage. This is compounded by issue #1 in that you may have to look through multiple entries to find a "good" one. The flip side is that if you do find an accurate entry that is properly entered by weight, our small portions are fairly easy to accurately enter. Both Meals and Recipes can be built and saved. This generally works well, except that when building a recipe, you can't see all the nutrition info for an ingredient. This can be a problem again due to issue #1 above. What you find you have to do is check after you add the entry if it looks right. if not, it's back to editing and finding a different ingredient entry. Lately I've been seeing a lot of glitches, especially around my water consumption. I'll add water, then check again later to find that it's missing. Finally the biggest gripe: this program is not customized for bariatric patients. At the end of the day if you "Complete This Entry", you'll get a nasty message telling you that you're not eating enough.
