    Introducing myself

Hi Melissa, Congratulations on your amazing success! Regarding thinning hair, I would highly recommend taking Biotin. Someone told me you can get it in liquid form, but I buy the 5,000 mcg capsules. I just open the capsule and put it in pudding. It takes a little while to see a difference (probably at least a few weeks), but after some time you should notice an improvement in your hair... and nails. I first tried it when I was losing hair on Atkins and it worked great.

    Excited

Thanks for the encouragement. Also, was wondering once I have my surgery, how do I get the BMI weight loss thingy to show on my threads. I see them on alot and think it is an encouraging thing.
  3. I decided in October of last year to have WLS. My doctor recommended the surgeon I'm currently seeing. When I went to the info session he seemed like a personable guy, good credentials, thousands of bandings under his belt. I was excited and made all my appointments right away as I was told. I met with the nutritionalist twice, the pulmonologist, my PCP, cardiologist and psychologist and made further follow up appointments as I was told. Along the way little insignificant information wasn't told to me and that should have been my first clue especially when I got the, "Oh you didn't know?" answer more than once. The lack of information wasn't a big concern because it delayed other appointments but I was still weeks away from a surgical date. Well now the little insignificant information has turned into a major miscommunication. My insurance carrier requires I see a nutritionalist for 6 months. In the info packet from the surgeon I was told I needed to see my PCP for 6 months and follow a doctor prescribed weight loss program. Well that's not true. My insurance carrier requires I see a nutritionalist not my PCP. So now my surgical date will be delayed for another 4 months, (I saw my surgeon's nutritionalist twice in two months). The lesson to be learned here for anyone contemplating WLS please learn all that is required of you. Call your insurance carrier yourself and ask. Make sure you call your surgeon's office often to make sure all the information is correct and accurate. Don't trust the answer of one person. Make sure you ask for comfirmation from someone else in the office. Interview the office help before you decide on your surgeon. I have an appointment on Monday with a different surgeon. I'll interview his staff and may change doctors. Problem is he prefers gastric bypass. At this point I could be talked into it very easily.
  4. It keeps telling me its an invalid url. I wasnt kidding bout the computer illiterate. I have used that pic in other places without an issue so im not sure how it could be invalid. hmmm......I even cropped and edited it to make it small enough. Im at a loss
  5. I am three years out of my lap band surgery and just crossed my 100 pound weight loss figure. So happy with that. All the hard work has well been work it. Here is my question regarding weightloss. Does anyone experience periods of time where no matter what you do, no weight loss occurs? I can go months at a time eating right, working out and nothing changes with the numbers. Then, all of a suddent I am down three or five pounds in one week. Anybody out there have that same experience? I am very curious to see if anyone understands why this might happen. Queen D

    Mexico surgery post-op questions

i just got banded on 04/21/08 but here in the states. i'm kinda a girlie girl and i thought i was going to be one of the people up and running the next day. i chose to stay one night in the hospital so i brought pj's, a change of clothes, my hair dryer and curling Iron lol needless to say, i never changed into my pj's because i still had an IV in and didn't want to go thru the hassle of changing... so i never wore my pj's. i just wore the same clothes home that i did to the hospital... so a waste of packing an outfit. i just threw my hair into a ponytail because i was too sore to take a real shower... so a waste of packing all the hair accessories. pack simple and light! good luck!!

    30 pounds lighter!

I hit the 30lb mark today! Hurray!! I am still planning on getting another fill next week. I do not feel like I have found my sweet spot yet. I am at 4.5 cc. Surgery was December 4, 2008 2008 was a very eventful year for me. In Jan 08 I found a lump in my left breast. I had 2 surgeries, 4 months of chemo, lost ALL my hair. 6 weeks of radiation. Last chemo was 07/24/08. Last radiation was 10/15/08. Then I decided to lessen my chance for reoccurance of BC by losing weight. Lapband sugery 12/04/08.

    3 Weeks Banded

It has been three weeks since I was banded and I feel good! Thank you Jesus!!! I just finished a MAJOR workout while listening to Beyonce's "Get Me Bodied"! I feel GREAT! My weight loss is a stand still, some silly plateau that I am getting ready to get rid of! I got pounds to lose and I don't need anything slowing me down! The good thing is I have gained any weight! I had Tilapia and roasted mashed potatoes last night for dinner, leftovers today for lunch and dinner! I thought I didn't have that much restriction, but I do. More than anything I want to drink liquids, so I'm always drinking my water. Fruit H2O is the best, it was one of my favs three years ago. Anywayyyyyyy, I'm goin to bed early! Be Blessed!
  11. Well it's been a month already and I am doing great! I went to Dr. Madan's office, but he wasn't there so I saw Dr. Tschansky (good doc too). He said my weight loss is really good and to keep it going. I was suppose start on my mushy stage today, but he said I can start eating solid food now. I was already eating mushy foods, so I can kick it up another notch. Well that's all for now. Be Blessed!
  12. 1500 calories and no exercise should give you about a 2 lb/month loss so you're just about where you should be. If you're not tracking calories you might want to start? It's very easy for we obese to overlook a few indiscretions here and there which can sabotage any weight loss. And Missy is right. Vomiting is not good. Why do you vomit and is it a real vomit or PBing?
  13. Hey all, My name is Amy and I have had my band for a little over a year now. The day of my surgery I weighed 277 lbs and as of this morning I weighed 255. I was down to 249 but we went on vacation and I gained some back (although I don't know how because I threw up A LOT while we were gone). I originally decided on having the surgery because I tried EVERYTHING to lose weight. Every diet, every diet pill, exercise, you name it I probably tried it. I have diabetes, PCOS, anxiety and depression. My aunt who I was very close to passed away a few years ago from complications of diabetes. I am pretty much just like her when it comes to my health. I favor her in looks as well. As much as I love and miss her so much, I do NOT want to be like her and die in my 40's. I am 31 now and I have an 8 year old little boy who is my world. I know this is kind of jumbled up right now, I'm just typing as things come to me. I knew that having this surgery was just a tool and not a solution but most days, I feel like it was the WORST decision of my life. I have lost little weight and even though I don't always follow the rules of having a band, for the most part I stick to them. I am so discouraged and tired of throwing up. I told myself before having surgery that I would NEVER let myself throw up because I despise throwing up. And now its a weekly occurance it seems. I've had Fluid removed and then put back in and I am just now to the point where I feel FULL when I eat. I am a stress eater and this past year has definitely been stressful. My husband just returned from our second deployment in September and I feel like a failure. I had all this time to lose weight while he was gone and yet, I lost a measly 20 pounds. Sigh. Sorry for the rambling, but I guess I don't feel like I can really talk to anyone about all of this that REALLY understands. So I probably sound like Crazypants McGee, but I promise I'm not. I'm just a girl who is trying to regain her health and control of her life.

2nd Thoughts- 3 days from surgery

Hi there, I wish you the best no matter what your decision... I had my sleeve 12/11, with similar stats as you...McButterpants was in my original "Sleeve" group on Facebook, and I had second thoughts too...so much that postponed my sleeve from November to December. I really wish I had not worried so...the surgery was a breeze, the recovery the first two days was sore and a bit painful, but not terribly so. And now I am down almost 50 lbs and feel SO much better about myself, my body, and my future. I agree, the weight loss through shakes, etc., can be quick, but is very, very difficult to sustain. I know, Ive done it many times. The sleeve gives you a physical barrier to overeating, and for me, it has really helped with my hunger most of the time. God bless...

    Weight Loss questions

Hello Rohit, At my heaviest I was 388 lbs. I finally realized that dieting and pills was not going to work for me. I grew despondent and then a friend made a comment that I should get weight loss surgery. I was offended. I kept dwelling on it it, obsessing over her words. I was formerly dead-set against it and thought it was only for losers and was the "easy way out". I finally considered that maybe I was wrong and began researching it. After about a year of research and saving money I decided to get the gastric sleeve in Tijuana. I was 350 lbs on the day of surgery. Four to five months later I had already lost over 100 lbs. Today, I'm just 8 lbs away from my goal weight. I'm both extremely excited and anxious because there is both positive and negative things that you have to work through but I can tell you that I should have had the surgery sooner. I do not regret it and highly recommend it.

    Letter to Surgeon

Sounds great. The only thing I might suggest is instead of just "In the past, I have tried a variety of weight loss methods" Specifically list those programs you've tried and maybe even your success and regain? Just a thought. Best of luck to you!
  18. Hey Birdie, I know EXACTLY what you're going thru. When I found out that I had the thumbs up for surgery and had to do the 6 month weight loss diet, I gained 15 lbs. I got up to 286 (2/28/08) and was beside myself. I definitely had "last meal syndrome" and wanted to eat everything that I would never be able to eat again. It will get better! Once I saw the scale at 286 I had a reality check. I realized that this is the exact opposite of what I should do and what I wanted to do. I lost over 30 lbs before surgery (7/2/08) and I am now less than two months out of surgery and weigh 236. You can do this! I promise you it will get better. My thought process has changed completely regarding food. LOL Except for when I'm on my period! Good luck - and if you ever need any support or someone to just talk to feel free to send me a private message!

  21. Hi all I am totally freaking out! My surgery is one week away and i am so tempted to cancel. I am really scared and nervous. I am not new to WLS, i had the band for 6 years, had complications and had it removed 12 months ago, so i have been through this process before and have an idea of what to expect kind of. I keep asking myself the following... - Cant i just continue Optifast to loose weight. - what will happen 20 years down the track. - is it necessary since i am not that big and i hold my weight well - why go through this and get loose skin when my body is not that flabby now. - will this cause me to have no social life as eating is a form of social and cultural get togethers. - my hair is already falling out.... will i be bald. And so much more. Ive researched for months and still can't imagine how much I will be able to eat n drink. Please help... i am seriously tempted to cancel my surgery as i am petrified that ill end up with complications that I had with my band 6 years out. Did anyone else go through this so close to surgery?

    Psych Eval

My psych admitted to me that he was more concerned with our 1 on 1 visit than with the results of the exam. He said he just wanted to know that I didn't have any false expectations of what I thought the band was going to do for my life. He said that some people think that losing weight will help with their marriages, money problems, depression(deeper than weight), ect. Basically he wanted to know that I was realistic about the outcome and wasn't looking for something that couldn't be obtained through weight loss.

    Slowly but surely

I'm not going to lie I have been watching my scale daily. I think that's just because I was stuck for two weeks and I felt I wasn't doing enough to loose. I was only taking in about 1000 calories a day. I think my body was just fighting to stop the weight loss. Like everyone says it was being stubborn!! Now I will only check the scale every other day . Not three times a day..lol
  24. I agree that many are misinformed and that is part of why they say the things they do. This is EXACTLY why I've told only four people, my parents (and so far my mom's keeping her mouth shut), my DH and a friend who was also thinking of the band. I have had to have my date changed, and I may not tell her about the updated date. Though she checks in here from time to time, so she may see it (if so, hello!). I plan on not ever telling people. If I am successful and lose weight with the band as I plan to be, then I will merely say it's been a combination of exercise and portion control that has helped me to lost weight. I've been fortunate that I've jumpstarted my weight loss and have lost a little over 40# already before being banded, so if I continue to lose, no one will say anything.

    Slipped Band

All I have to say is DANG, you kicked butt losing your weight in less than a year. I thought I was doing pretty good til I saw how much you lost. Congrats on the weight loss, sorry to hear of you slippage.
