    Ring Size?!

I'm just over a year out and have maybe 15 more pounds I'd like to lose. My rings are dangerously loose, so my husband bought me some ring sizers and they help. I went in and had my finger sized just out of curiosity, and I've gone from an 8 to a 6.5! That just seems crazy to me. Anyway, I won't get them sized until I stop losing weight as I don't want to have to do it again later.
  2. I was a lower BMI to start but only because I had basically been on a never ending diet for years. Just because of the portions of what I ate (even when it was nutritious food) I was gaining like ten pounds a year). Well my knees were starting to hurt when I exercised and I just knew that within a year or two when I weighed even more it was going to hurt that much more and make it impossible to exercise making me gain even more weight. I could see it snowballing and I decided to do something before it got out of control.

    Crazy and Sad Realizations

Congratulations on the weight loss. Also, I understand not having a normal sized childhood. I wanted so much to have the experiences my friends were having when they were picking out prom dresses or going shopping for bathing suits in the summer. You're not alone. Sending you hugs!

    Crazy and Sad Realizations

@kcuster83 I didn't realize you are 6ft tall! I'm so happy to know there's another tall gal on here! I'm 6 ft 2 inches and when I tell people my goal is to get to onederland they always question... "is that it?" I've also battled 100 pounds over the last decade. Some years I would feel like I was winning, but most I would be struggling and railing against srubborn weight that would not come off. I'm so grateful for this surgery and the chance at a healthier me.
  5. I have a bad knee.... again. The only way the dr will fix it is if I lose about 30 lbs. Im 68 years old. I cant breathe and cant walk because of my knee. I have been dieting forever and now I am losing a minimal amout of weight. My dr suggested it in April but I wasnt quite ready She refered my to a dietian and I have been following that diet and by July had only lost 5 lbs. I decided if I wanted to ever get my knee fixed and get off the oxygen I would have to have the surgery. The dietian said it would be the sleeve which I hadnt even heard of. I go for my first surgery appt on Tues. Im hoping it is not going to take another 6 months to a year for me to have the surgery.
  6. Hi. I know that we all had our different reasons for having WLS. I did it because I was fed up with yo-yo dieting. I was on-off Keto diet for over two years. I've lost some weight and gained it all back in the end. The longest I've stayed on diet was 5 months and that paid off really well (lost 25 kg). But then Covid-19 hit. I was about to go back to Keto diet in January 22 when my sister called to tell me she was going for the mini gastric bypass. That was the first time time I've heard of it. Fast forward three weeks and I'm on the plane flying to Egypt to have mine. My "breaking point" was finally going back to work in the office and having to remove the arm rests of my office chair because it somehow "shrunk" and was squeezing my thighs. How about you? What made you decide to have the surgery and what was the breaking point?

    Weight loss and menopause

HRT! (That’s likely what your mum was on too @ShoppGirl.) I was menopausal before my surgery. It was the reason of the sudden 15kg weight gain I had that pushed me to the surgery. The hormonal flush from the oestrogen released from my fat as I was losing was fantastic. No menopausal symptoms at all. Once my weight loss slowed they came back though. ☹️ I’ve had symptoms since about 2016 & still do. Still have breakthrough hot flushes even on HRT though they’re not as bad as when I’m not on it. And I’m not as ‘feisty’ on HRT. My 82yr old mother is still on HRT - if she goes off it all her symptoms return & you don’t want her feisty! I wonder sometimes if I might end up being the same. Lots of benefits. Good for supporting calcium absorption & therefore your bone density. Can reduce the risk of heart disease & strokes too if you start before you’re 60. Certainly worth a conversation with your GP &/or gynaecologist.

    Weight loss Surgery

There are lots of exercises you can do seated which wouldn’t impact the healing of your ankle. Google is your friend. Resistance bands are really useful too. Sure won’t stretch you from a cardiac perspective but will work your upper body muscles. And yes, exercise only contributes to about 10% of any weight loss you have to lose. Have 50lbs to lose then exercise will be responsible for about 5lbs. Unless you start running marathons! If your calorie consumption is less than your body needs to function, you will lose weight even if it is a little slower with your reduced activity. Maybe check in with your dietician to ensure you’re on the right path. Sometimes a small tweak can be helpful. Am a little surprised you’re being advised to still be getting protein from shakes instead of real food alone this far along even if you have weight you still wants to lose.. I didn’t have another shake once I began purées. My calories were still low & I got my protein in. Even now I get in 70g of protein & consume about 1300/1400 calories a day in maintenance. Oh & I didn’t really exercise while I was losing & apart from some stretching exercises I still don’t. Wouldn’t burn 40 calories a day. Hope your ankle heals quickly & you’re up & moving easily soon.
  9. So sorry you are experiencing this. Your PCOS is the likely suspect or at least a contributing factor to your struggles. Also check your medications. Many common meds are renown for resulting in weight gain. There is not one diet/way of eating that works for everyone. So your nutritionist saying you eat healthily & gave you no other help is pretty poor. Like @Sunnyway, I made changes to what I eat. I did lots of reading. And as I was slowly introducing foods back into my diet, there were some I didn’t start eating again, some I started & dropped again. I really listened to my body & what it needed. There are foods/food types I avoid, others I restrict or reduce my intake. Much like @Sunnyway, I cut out a lot of added sugar, artificial sweeteners & sugar alternatives (so no desserts, cakes, biscuits, sweets, etc.), little starch (no potatoes, bread, rice or pasta). General keep to fairly low processed foods prepping most of what I eat myself which allows me to control the ingredients & how it’s cooked. I eat some carbs - about 2 serves a day but whole or multi grains. But I found this is what works for me. I feel better: no bloating, less gas, more even energy levels, etc. Don’t really miss anything. Eating this way works for me. It may not work for you. Question the nutritionist further - they are there to help you. You may benefit from a eating plan that incorporates aspects of anti inflammation diet, or to reduce foods naturally high in hormones (soy products, lot fed beef & chicken, etc.) There may be additives in more processed foods that are fighting your ability to lose weight too.* Again the nutritionalist should be able to advise you. *- Watched a great documentary earlier this year which showed that a high processed food diet actually increases the hunger hormone in your body & decreases the hormone that tells you you’ve had enough. Gracious knows what they do to your other hormones.

    Slowing down?

There are things you can depend upon. Stalls happen & you can experience several of them. Our rate of weight loss slows as we progress (as our calorie intake slowly increases & gets closer to the number of calories our body needs to function & maintain our weight). Our weight loss is never a straight downward line on a graph. It zigs & zags, up & down. And everyone’s weight fluctuates & women fluctuate more thanks to our hormones. It can be fluid, constipation, what we are, how much we drank, or just your body. Not sure how much you want to lose & what your weight currently is but it’s likely you’re in a stall. But chat with your dietician. You may need to tweak your diet or activity.
  11. This is definitely a difficult situation. First some background for you. I think there are generally three reasons we have the staged diet that we do: To protect our healing stomachs. Not only are the stomach tissues massively inflamed and need to heal, but they also don't yet work the way a normal stomach works. Eating things that are off plan can even cause a blockage. That could lead to yet another procedure. Now the fact that he tolerated these foods so well may mean he's probably healing well, but it does not alleviate the risk of blockage this early on. To ease us into eating restricted portion sizes. Even if we can eat bacon & eggs, doesn't mean we should. The entire point of surgery was to cause restriction, malabsorption, and hormonal changes to help us learn how to eat properly. If he deviates once, that's one thing, but if this becomes his new norm, he's going down a path that will lead to weight regain. I don't know about him, but I didn't go through all this to fail. To make sure we are maximizing protein utilization. Our protein forward diet was designed to allow us to keep as much muscle mass as we can while losing weight. Insufficient protein can cause our bodies to actually burn muscle instead of fat. This will cause a reduction in our metabolisms, which will make it that much harder to lose weight. Yes, what we ate had a good amount of protein in it, but it also had a fair amount of fat. While some fat is needed in our diet, excess fat may cause him to lose more slowly or fail to get enough protein. My advice here is that you should have an open and honest conversation with him. Simply express to him you're concerns. Also, let him know you will help in any way you can. Also, I agree with @The Greater Fool. "Telling on him" with his nutritionist would be the wrong approach. Hopefully he can have an open and honest conversation with them about the fact that the went off plan and seek their help for the issue. Afterall, there's a reason this happened and his team should be able to help. Ultimately, it's going to be up to him to decide if he's going to go back on plan or not. Just be there for him and be supportive, but don't nag. Nagging will just make it worse.

Feeling defeated 10 months post op

Literally me right now. I also have PCOS, and it is definitely sabotaging me. It makes you gain weight and then hangs on to it for dear life. As if the hormone, menstrual cycle, and fertility issues aren't enough, right?

I REALLY hate PCOS...I feel defeated...

I was put on Metformin for PCOS back in 2005 when I lived in Virginia. Once I moved here to COlorado and had the surgery, my surgeon took me off all blood pressure and diabetes meds, including Metformin. I tried explaining that I was on it for PCOS but he still told me to stop taking it because it might make my blood sugar go too low as I lose weight. Now that I'm 5 months out from surgery, I'm going to ask my PCP when I see her if I can go back on it.

    Weight loss Surgery

Thanks for the response and the help but I would let you know my doctor told me not to worry about the calories he told me to mainly focus on the protein the protein drink or shakes he said make sure you're fat is under 40 g and try to make sure your sugar is under 20 but at the most make sure your sugar does not go over 40 now again today but I really don't use sugar if I do use sugar if in my green tea but I use Linda and that's about it but the only reason I'm having trouble losing weight right now is because I'm down because they told me I cannot do anything below my waist down due to the fact that I fractured my foot almost a month ago and I'm still working on it getting here they only want me exercising from the upper half Jenny soderquist ( woof woof love you Kirby Liam minks)

How do I know when I'm done?

This is a question I find myself asking more and more about also. I was sleeved this past December, so right at 9.5 months post op. I hit goal a month ago and similarly to others I'm still losing weight. It's slowed down significantly at this point but I'm on a mission to simply lose as much as possible. I'm now -17 lbs past goal.. Call it a personal mission (or mission to get my moneys worth since I paid out of pocket for my surgery lol) but I am now entering the skeletor point where I feel like I'm done. I still watch what I eat pretty closely, weight my meals, and don't eat starches or bread but I do feel I have the ability to adjust my intake and most importantly amount of activity to help burn calories and keep weight off.

    Weight loss and menopause

Ooh I don’t even want to think about this. I know if it causes weight gain in some it will cause it ten fold for me (like everything else does). I know that my mom stayed on birth control pills for years past the end of her cycle. I’m pretty sure it was to help with the symptoms of menopause. I wonder if it helps control menopause associated weight gain??

    Activities for Exercise

I cycle (a lot) now but did get into gym for a while and got into strongman type stuff. Cycling has been amazing as it’s non weight bearing and I’m an amputee. Have cycled 5000 miles this year with the longest ride being 155 miles. I could still do with getting more weight off as every pound matters on a hill 😬
  20. Im 4 years post op this month and have been pretty much at this weight (+/- a few pounds) since i got into maintenance 3+ years ago. (I was 118.3 lbs this morning) I actually used to eat over 2500+ cals regularly in years 2-3 post-op but that was because I exercised a heck of alot more during that period than I do now. Im 5’2”. In your decision to decide if u want to lower calories to lose more weight, i suggest you figure out what u are willing to do to achieve that. Do you want to eat less? You mentioned you are happy at 1800 cals a day. Will you be even happier at a lower weight, but have to offset that with less cals? Will you still be able to be at peace with your life and lifestyle to achieve (and maintain) a lower body weight? If the answer is yes, then go for it! Lower your cals, increase your exercise and get to where you want to be. However, if the answer is no and you see yourself suffering angst that takes away from peaceful content living, then I say it ain’t worth it in the long run. But thats just me. Good Luck! ❤️
  21. I would at least tell him that at this point it isn’t about just diet or losing weight. The staged return to eating is to keep his healing tummy safe. He can actually hurt himself pretty seriously by progressing too quickly through these stages. I know that nagging a man doesn’t usually help but maybe just tell him calmly that for right now it’s actually the most important that he follows the rules so he doesn’t hurt himself and let him decide what to do. At least you will know you tried which I know from experience is all you really can do with a grown man. If his dr said soft foods are okay then eggs should be fine but bacon probably isn’t the best idea at this point. Also they cut a lot of nerves and stuff during surgery so he may not feel full like he should this early out so he really should consider measuring his food for a while.

    Just starting my journey!

I had to do 6 visits of medically managed weight loss which took 5 months after my initial consultation so my first appt to surgery was just about 6 months. Not everyone is required to do that though and some require only 3 months.
  23. Did you gain any weight eating that many calories? Once I went from about 1,200/1,300 calories to 1,800/2,000 about 5 months ago I did start to gain some weight. Not a lot but still(7 pounds). I'm not sure if I should go back down to 1,200. I've been a lot happier at 1,800, but I also don't want to gain weight back you know. Currently I'm 5'1 131 lbs, but my lowest was 124 about 5 months ago.
  24. I chose 120 lbs…which was the midpoint of the “healthy” BMI range for my height. In had been 120 lbs in my adult life before (last time was in my late 20’s, i started gaining weight on the road to obesity after my daughter was born) so i knew it was relatively doable. 4 years post-wls now and i was 118.3 lbs this morning, so i figure i guessed right 🤷🏻‍♀️ Of course I realize that i will not be this weight forever, i’ll just go with it for now and make changes if i feel i need (or want) to. A year or so ago i made efforts to stay close (or under) 115, but decided it was more effort than I wanted to expend (which wasn’t much really, but still) and upped my “acceptable” weight to 120. Its been INFINITELY easier to stay below the higher number, and i like it this way.

Have you tried metformin and Spironolactone for PCOS? That's what I'm on and balances out my hormones. I've been on both since I was 16 and diagnosed with pcos. These meds at the right dosages should help with any weight gain that's due to pcos. Metformin alone can do it. I just have the added spironolactone because I have high androgen with my pcos.
