  1. 3 years ago I had a RNY bypass, lost 126 lbs. I’m down to a size 8 some 6’s but I’ve always liked my clothes loose. I’m still trying to get use to the changes to my body, and I’m wondering what others have done to better these problem areas. Mine is my neck, I now have all this extra skin that hangs like a Turkey waddle and I’m very conscious of it. When the pandemic was happening and we had to wear masks I could hide it with the mask. Now that the pandemic is pretty much under control tho I feel like that’s what people look at when they look at me. Please help me, get rid of this, is there exercises that will get rid of it? I’ve been using collagen and retinol creams and putting collagen in my soups even. Plastic surgery is my last resort if there even is a surgery to remove neck skin. My other problem area is my arms - bat wings, I’ve been lifting 10 lb weights doing various exercises and I do see some change but not enough that completely satisfy me, again I use my lotions and take my collagen but could use some suggestions from someone that might have had the same issues and let me know what they did. Thank you😀

    Post op liquid diet

I’m having surgery on 3/13 and just discussed this with my nutritionist. On my plan, “Clear” liquids is anything you can see through (Water, ice, broth, Gatorade zero, sugar free jello, even diluted apple juice). After the first few days, I’m able to move up to “full” liquids like protein shakes, thinned yogurt, strained soups (no bits at all). Definitely check with your provider on this because everyone seems to have different requirements 😊

    Post op liquid diet

I have surgery Friday and have been thinking about this same thing— can you have actual protein shakes on the “clear” liquid phase? I’m reading my paperwork and it seems I could.. but would love to hear what others did for the “clear” part- my second week is “full” liquids… the one protein water (ie protein Gatorade) had was terrible, could barely get thru half of it. Any suggestions on clear ones that are good are appreciated.

I'm so sorry you are struggling so. It is not easy! I am on day 7 today so feel you! Try relaxing, distracting yourself by staying busy with things you enjoy besides food, drinking your shakes on a schedule 3- 4 daily and constantly drinking your low/non caloric drinks (broth, non decaf/ herbal tea or coffee, crystal light, sugar free sports drinks, protein water, ) As well as sugar free Popsicles (and anything else allowed on your program. Increasing activity/walking can also help. Split this into several mini walks. And don't hesitate to reach out to your friend, family and your dietitian/program support for additional help and tips. Don't be frightened to ask for help. This is a difficult process and you are not the first or last to be finding it such a struggle. Have faith in yourself. You CAN do this! We all need the support of others! Please help yourself and do what you've done here and ask for more support from thise directly involved with you today and who can impact you short term. Good luck. Praying for your strength, patience and SUCCESS!

How long were you off work?

2 weeks. I dealt with mostly muscle pain from where they pulled out the stomach that lingered. The gas, incision pain etc was non existent almost instantly

    Timing, meals, postop

Agreed on an alarm every 3 hrs. It might feel a lot but as time goes by your body will eventually let you know on your own what schedule feels right!
  9. I am getting close to scheduling my RNY. I had my endoscopy the beginning of the month and go 3/6 for final appointment. I am having the fear/anxiety about what if I don’t wake up. I have had a lot of stress lately. My aunt (66) just had a stroke earlier this month and I have a 5 year old at home who is very active. I wanna have this surgery for my health and to be around to see my son grow up and do more things with him and my husband and not be so out of breath or not able to because of pain, heart palpitations or shortness of breath. But I’m having the anxiety and fear of not being around for it. Normal? How do I fix my thoughts? I am a believer and I give God full control but anxiety is still creeping in.

    Post op liquid diet

You can usually add protein powder to any liquid you’re allowed during this stage. Have you been given your dietary requirements for post surgery yet? There are foods & liquids you should avoid during the 6 or so weeks of the restricted diet while you’re healing. Check with your surgeon’s office & your dietician about what you can & can have. There can be differences in what you’re allowed & when across surgeons & plans. Like I didn’t have a clear liquid stage just liquids. All the best with your surgery.

  12. Hi! I am having surgery next week and was wondering about the liquid diet post op. Are we to add unflavored protein powder to our broths during this stage? I bought some protein clear liquid (premiere and Gatorade) so I didn’t know if I should be doing that also.
  13. Not only do hiccups hurt, but sneezing too lol. I'm still having trouble getting my goals met. But I can't achieve them if I the a nap during the day. That's hard wven before surgery, I took a nap during the day. I find it hard too because I'm so sick of protein shakes, they're starting to taste so sweet to me. I can't wait to start purees next week. It doesn't hurt to sleep on your stomach? When I was able to sleep on my side a few days ago, I was so happy, but I have to have a pillow.
  14. I hear you! It still is a little hard being a week out. But try a spoonful or a sip, wait for it to go down and just pay attention to how it feels. Maybe wait a few seconds to a minute and then take another sip/spoonful
  15. I'll definitely try that. Thanks for the tips. Here is what worked for me so far: - sucking mints (sugar-free ones) really helps. I carry them with me everywhere I go. - I don't eat before cooking my food (which I do once a week). Otherwise I won't be able to do it. - Going for a walk after the meal also helps

    What changes?

P.S. I don't think gaining all your weight back is that common, but it DOES happen if people aren't careful. A majority of us do have that 10-20 lb rebound in year 2 or 3, though. And I've known a few people who've gained 40, 50, or 60 lbs (due to old habits). It's easy to do if you don't watch it.

    What changes?

you can gain weight with any and all types of weight loss surgeries if you let old bad habits creep back in. Weight loss surgeries are just a tool, and you have to keep up with your part of it for it to work. And they work extremely well as long as you follow the rules. a rebound weight gain of 10-20 lbs during year 2 or 3 is VERY common. That's more your body settling in to a weight it's comfortable at. If you're diligent, you'll stabilize there - or you may even lose some or all of the rebound if you work at it. But when old habits start up again, you can definitely gain weight again - sometimes a lot of it. And sometimes all of it. what WLS mainly does is control how much you can eat AT ONE SITTING. This is an example I've used a lot: Before I had surgery, when my husband and I ordered a pizza (always a large...), we'd each eat half of it. I can't do that anymore. I can eat 1-2 pieces. It's physically painful for me if I try to eat more than that. But it would be very easy to eat 1-2 pieces at 5:00 pm, and another 1-2 pieces at 8:00 pm, and yet another 1-2 pieces before bed. So....half a large pizza. THAT is the kind of stuff you have to watch out for - that, and mindless snacking (planned snacks are fine - but mindless snacking has consequences...). so to respond to your question about whether or not maintaining after two years is difficult, yes, it is. I constantly watch what I eat. If I notice the number on the scale starting to head north - esp if it gets above my "oh crap" number (the number I do NOT want to ever go over again), it's all hands on deck until it's back under control. So yes. Obesity is a very complex, chronic condition, and we do have to keep working at it to keep the weight from coming back. But the surgery DOES make that easier. There is no way I could have ever lost over 200 lbs and maintained that loss for several years (well, mostly - I did have a rebound) without this surgery.
  18. Okay I had a sleeve 3/9/2021 and lose a pretty good chunk of weight but since I have gained it all back. My doctors have tested me for many things hoping to find answers to why I am so hungry and I am still waiting on a couple more results but it is looking more and more like I just failed. I am meeting with the bariatric doctor again tomorrow to see if they think revision is an option for me (assuming the rest of those tests come back fine as well). My question is, for those of you who revised because of weigh gain, did it work the second time around and if so what changed? What did you do different?!

    New Here

Hello fellow shorty! I'm an inch shorter than you and my starting numbers are very similar to yours! I had my surgery in September 2021, I reached my goal weight of 110 in October 2022. Overall, this surgery has been life-changing and I am so glad I was brave enough to go through the process. I had some issues in the beginning, but once I started to recover it went fast. Right now if I'm being completely honest the biggest problem I have is trying to keep what weight I have left ON so I can still shop in the adults' section and not have to buy everything in kids' sizes. You're going to stall here and there, some will be short and sometimes it will feel like you haven't lost an ounce in a month; stay the course, trust the process, and know that a lot of the time stalls are giving your skin and muscles a chance to catch up and adjust.

    Just had surgery 2/14

Thanks appreciated. Having a tough time meeting protein goals but trying my best. Today I start my 3rd week diet where I can finally have eggs and possibly tofu (if I can stomach it [emoji38]) so hopefully a turning point on the protein. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. It gets easier by the day to meet the protein/liquid goals. Hang in there! Tomorrow, I'll be at 3 weeks post-op and returning to work on Thursday. Went to the gym twice now and was slow, but steady, on the treadmill. It's been night and day from the first week to the third. Feeling so much better.
  22. Hello @pintsizedmallrat I had my sleeve surgery in December of 2021. Hence, I am about 14 months postop. To date, I have lost 153lbs. from my highest pre-surgery weight. Interestingly enough, you had your surgery at the same location where I had my surgery...that is if there is only one Dr. Trace Curry who does bariatric surgeries. I did not have any complications from my surgery that were any different than situations that have been described on this site. As a male, I haven't experienced anything different than what others, male or female, have described. I will try to highlight some of the things I have experienced. I only used the pain medication for the first day. The gas from the surgery was the worst part for me. Once the gas went away, everything else was pretty smooth. I stayed at a hotel near the surgery center the first night. The next morning, I went home with someone else driving. I followed the doctor's instructions very closely when it came to food, vitamins and movement. I count every calorie for which I eat and/or drink. I was very cold for the first few months. Approximately 30 days after surgery, I was permitted to begin exercising. (walking) Once permitted, I began other forms of cardio like biking, jogging and the elliptical machine. Once permitted, I began to lift weights. I have continued the exercise regimen every week since. I weigh myself every week in order to track my progress. I don't know if any of this will be helpful to you. I hope your husband has a great experience. Best wishes to you and your family!

    March 23 buddies yet?

Hello, Crazy, I just got the call from the doctor. My insurance was approved, and I am scheduled for surgery March 23rd. Tampa, FL My first Consult was on 12/19/2022. 2nd Appointment 1/19/2023 3rd Appointment 2/19/2023 Surgery is Scheduled for 3/23/2023. This process was SUPER QUICK!
  24. On week 5 you should still really only be focused on your protein and hydration 60+ gr of protein 64+ oz of water. At 5 weeks out my food tracker tells me I was getting around 600 calories a day, but I wasn’t counting calories per my team’s instructions… only focusing on protein and hydration.

    I’m so cold! 🥶

My surgery was over 3 years ago, and I'm still freezing!! LOL!! Better than being hot and sweaty though, which is how I used to be when I was heavy!
