When I was sleeved last year with Dr Ortiz in TJ I was given Tramadol (sp??). It worked fine and was no problem taking across the border. For those who may have noticed taht I am scheduled on 12/6 for a sleeve, it is because there was too much scar tissue from my band and the sleeve ended up being larger than it should. I have lost almost no weight in the year I have had the sleeve. Dr Ortiz has agreed to do another surgery. I dont see it as his fault, just the scar tissue. He told me this is only the second time he has had to do this in all the time he has been doing sleeves.

Initial consultation 2/12 check Pulmonary Function Test 2/23 check Psych eval 3/11 check Nutrition Consultation 3/11 check Ultrasound and blood work 3/15 check Met with PCP to discuss surgery 3/15 check Pulmonary consultation 3/16 check EGD 3/25 check Cardiology consult 3/31 Meeting with surgeon and my husband 4/1 It's been a busy couple of months trying to get in all these consultations and appointment. Working nights doesn't make it easier either, people forget you have to sleep sometime! My cardiology has been postponed due to the receptinists sending me to the wrong office... twice. But I think we have it this time! lol I'm been dreading and putting off the low carb diet. That is until I read a very informative post about how the liver actually shrinks. Time to get my butt in gear. I've lost weight, don't get me wrong but apparently I'm not shrinking my liver at all. I was very nervous going to the EGD. I've never been under anesthesia before. They rolled me into the room and once I saw my doctor I felt much better but still hated the idea of losing control. The anesthesiologist says goodnight and the next thing I remember is waking up in recovery. I told the nurse it was the best power nap I've ever had. On the first I will meet with my surgeon again and he will meet my husband since he didn't attend the information seminar. At first my husband was against me having the surgery. Then I started to get cold feet and panic and we had a heart to heart and he thinks that I should go through with this. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions these passed few months and for awhile I convinced myself not to go through with it at all. I'm not sure when the surgery will be since I haven't been doing the appropriate diet to shrink the liver.

Still Stuck...Feedback Please!
angelah106 replied to fatblasting's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon explained that although you are feeling this in your throat it's actually your stomach. That may be when you are full, but if you have just started eating try to take smaller bites (pencil eraser size), chew 20 times and wait 1 minute between bites. There is an app called Eat Slower that may help w/ that. Good luck and congrats on your weight loss!! -
Hi guys, I'm Char! I'm a 43-year-old woman about to embark on this weight-loss journey and I'd like an accountability buddy. Preferably in the Philadelphia area but definitely someone I could text with in commiserate with.

I was diagnosed with PCOS last fall, banded in Feb. I lost weight slowly but steadily. My cycles came back after surgery and I was declared free of PCOS in June. I never had cysts but my endo said that I still had PCOS. Well, last week I was feeling like crap, tired, cranky and my boobs really hurt. Not aunt flo either. I took the test and it came back positive. It seems that I am currently 6 weeks pregnant. Shock, that is all I can say! I really did not expect it to happen. Talked with my doc about things. He wants me to keep what fills I have in my band and aim to not gain any weight. That will be interesting. Have any of you had luck doing that?
-
My friend has her C-section scheduled for tomorrow. She was banded two weeks before me in July '08. She kept her entire fill the whole time. Her ob/gyn said as long as she could eat 1800 calories per day, she wouldn't have to get unfilled. She has gained I think maybe 15-20 lbs with the baby and that will all come off when she has it. Oh, and this baby was a big surprise! She had to go on fertility drugs for her first two pregnancies, so she never dreamed she could get pregnant on her own. In fact, she has a set of twins that were 11 months old when she found out she was pregnant with this baby. Good luck!

KIM, When they asked me why I wanted the surgery I just made sure I said things like.... Want to be healthier, live longer, be around to see my kids grow up etc. I think they just want to make sure your not going it for the wrong reason (to become a runway model, get back at an ex, quick fix etc). One thing they might ask is if you have the support of your family. Oh and anoher thing.. I was leary of telling the physc about being on anti-depression meds thinking he might not give me the "ok", but I came clean and he told me he was glad I let him know. I said I was depressed about being over weight - he said it would help my case. Hope this helps and good luck to you. Michele :girl_hug:

My pysch eval was an 800 question quiz to determine if I was "mentally unstable". I was honest with him and told him in an hour long visit (not including the quiz) that I have diabetes in the family and was concerned for my overall health. He asked if I was a binge eater and I said yes. He just asked when my last binge was. Then he had me promise that I would start so kind of exercise 3X a week and to give up my sweet tea. I told him that I would give that up when I get approved for the surgery and he said that was fine. He also asked that I come in at 20-30 lb weight loss and than again at 100 lb weight loss, just to see how I was handling the weight loss mentally. It was very pleasant and I have never seen a pysch before!

Difficulty meeting goals in the pureed/soft food stage
James Marusek replied to healthier&happier4life's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You don't have to push yourself into the pureed food stage. I had RNY gastric bypass 3 years ago. I was on Full liquids for the first 4 weeks, Pureed Foods for the next 4 and only in the 9th week did I transition to solids. So maybe your stomach is not quite ready and might need a little extra healing time. The three most important elements after gastric bypass surgery are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin daily requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting store fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Your fluid requirement is more than just Water. It includes the water in the protein shakes, milk, the water you take to take your Vitamins, the water component of Soups, drinks like crystal light, tea or decaf coffee, etc. It is important to meet this daily requirement to keep from becoming dehydrated. Also as your fat cells are eliminated they release chemicals and hormones that are stored inside. These need to be flushed from your system, through your kidneys and expelled in your urine. Your body needs fluids to make this happen. Not sure why you are feeling anemic. Your body needs two minerals: Calcium and Iron. But if you take these at the same time or near the same time, they will not allow your body to absorb them. So time separation is very important. For me I found that I took all my iron supplements at night just before bedtime. Whereas I took my calciums spread out throughout the day. That worked best for me. Without adequate iron, you will become anemic. A lack of B12 can also make you weak and tired. If you are taking B12 as a time release capsule instead of sublingual, that might cause the weakness. -
Feeling very disheartened
tnwhite2001 replied to kurby's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Having the surgery was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. It took a lot of will power to get to the point, emotionally, where I could ask for help. I have been overweight my entire life. I have tried losing weight. In fact, I have got so far as starving myself to try to lose weight, to no avail. It is very easy for someone who has never dealt with a weight problem to say that this is the easy way out. Seriously though, it's not. I was just banded and I have to say that this is a huge lesson in restraint. Right now, I'm still hungry...all the time. I have no restriction but I'm losing weight because it's important to me. Because it's important to my health. Plus, this man clearly does not understand that there are medical conditions that make it nearly impossible for people to lose weight. This man is, in my eyes, a dolt who has no idea what he's talking about other than from a skinny and fit person's perspective. I would like to see how he would react in out shoes. I say you go with your first reaction and slap him. -
Hello Everyone!! I was informed 2 was ago that I was approved for Stage 2 for the BariatricPal program through Molina. I have a BMI of 39.5 weigh 224, 5’3” and possibly have Sleep apnea. My problem is I’ve tried weight loss on my own, I’ve diet, killed my self at the gym and just couldn’t loose weight. I have started my PT classes and Mental Health but still waiting on my Nutrition classes. Does anyone know if we can get approved for the surgery without having to complete all the classes. I just recently found out I might have to move to California in mid year and it bums me out because I don’t believe I can complete all these classes by then, then they told me I’d have to start all over again there. Is there anyone out there that can help me with loops and advice? Thank you!

Any Aussies here? Sleeved on 27/6/17
erica_ozzy73 replied to shericrazylady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there.. I've never had the band I've just got the banded sleeve which is the sleeve with a minimiser ring. I lost my weight quite quick as I was considered a low BMIer to begin with. So far it's all been ok although I'm still learning how to eat slow lol My health has improved as in my bp is better and everything seems to be normal. How are you feeling?... what issues have you had if you don't mind me asking?... [emoji4] -
My Dr suggested waiting a year after to lose weight and just be healthier. I think its just a good idea to be your healthiest before getting pregnant but that is my opinion. I waited 14 months and I was off any and all medications I was on, my blood pressure was down and my blood sugar was normal. If I would have gotten pregnant earlier, Im sure I would have been high risk. As of now I have no problems and have only gained 6 lbs in 22 weeks.

saying goodbye to my old friend...FOOD
Andrew0929 replied to readyanxiousscared's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A few months ago I was asking myself the same questions and questioning my decision to take such a radical step. Also, I went through a few months of food funerals and gained back 15 pounds I'd lost while going through all of my pre-op appointments. In my appointment with the surgeon to schedule surgery, he was really pissed off at me for gaining and put me on a 3-week pre-op diet. I took that seriously and dropped 31 pounds in 3 weeks, with Thanksgiving in the middle of that. My wife and I cooked for 20 guests and I consumed 450 calories that day. From a dieting perspective, the pre-op diet was the worst part so far. The shakes made me want to barf (and still do thinking about them). Dieting post-op has been a breeze for me. It's like I don't even have to try to diet ... The restriction takes care of my over-eating and my cravings are pretty much gone. I hope this lasts long-term because I'm loving my new outlook on food. -
female only Omg! Only 28 More Pounds Till My Goal Weight
TinyMamiOf3kids posted a topic in The Gals' Room
Please send me lots of hugs & kisses & all your best wishes I'm gonna shock my surgeon on my next appointment on December 21, 2012 He said he thinks I will be my normal weight of 140lbs. I told him nope! I'm going to be 125lbs I'm gonna work really hard eat very healthy & exercise & take all my Vitamins. When I reach my weight goal & go to the visit. I'm going to have the assistance cover his face until I'm there to see the shock on his face. Plus I want to give him a thankyou card for making it possible for me to lose weight, and have such a nice staff. Every single one is nice. What do you guys/girls/ladies think? Possible to reach my goal by December? I'm I being too friendly with giving a card? I just appreciate my surgeon a lot. He listens to me & never rushes. -
My dr let me make the decision. Stand up for yourself and maybe offer to take out a little and keep in touch about what you're feeling. Some people get really nauseated and need to be unfilled. I let them take out just a little bit and I have gained about 25 pounds- which I am okay with. It's nice to be able to eat some during the pregnancy- but I can't wait to lose it again!

Hello all! I was banded back on 9/1 after a decent struggle with my insurance. I am now 3 weeks from surgery and am feeling great. I weighed in at 409lbs in early June and I was 388lbs on the day of my surgery. Since surgery, I'm down to 367lbs after having lost 22lbs in the first week (eek!) and 2lbs in the 2nd week. However, after stepping on the scale this morning, I noticed I gained 3lbs. I know that my body is going through some major changes and I also know that I've just begun in week 3 to add some pureed and even some soft-solid foods into my diet. I'm a little discouraged, but again, I know my body is going through some major changes. Having type-2 diabetes and taking insulin, I also am very familiar with the harder struggle people have with losing/gaining weight. I guess in the end, I'm just venting but I am determined to keep at it and get myself healthier. Has anyone else had the same struggle so early on? I was reading into the 'bander's hell' before their first fill, but it's not even that I'm hungry all the time. I've been eating small meals (3-4 a day) and have been drinking my clear Protein and Protein shakes. I know this post is all over the place - I'm just a bit confused and concerned and just needing to vent. Any suggestions?

Plateau - trying not to get discouraged
ElfiePoo replied to 20zmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A plateau can mean a couple of things but it basically comes down to calories taken in vs calories being expended. If you take in more than you're expending, you gain. If you expend more than you're taking in, then you'll lose. Keep in mind that as you lose weight, it will take fewer calories to maintain that weight, so you'll have to reduce the calories you're eating...or expend more. For example, to maintain 260 pounds at my height, age and current activity level, I would have to eat about 2100 calories (roughly). To maintain a weight of 140 pounds, I could only eat about 1800 calories. Not much of a difference, but enough of one that it can stall any losses. Also, depending on the type of exercises you're doing, you may be building muscle which is denser (and thus weighs more) than the the same volume of fat. If you look and feel like you're losing weight (clothes hanging more loosely, muscles looking more toned, etc.), that may be the problem (I'd like to have that problem though). I posted a thread called "calculating your daily requirements" with a formula for calculating your daily food requirements...or you can go to the Mayo Clinic site and put in your height, age, activity level and the weight you'd like to be and it will calculate how many calories it would take per day to maintain that weight. . -
Anyone like me? 5'5" 180lbs bmi 30?
Meguone replied to 50lbstogo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 51, look 30, but 5'3" and 201. Waiting now for the approval and my BMI when I went in to see the doctor in April was only 198 and at 34.9BMI. I had talked to my regular PCP doctor and we discussed as stupid as it is, for me to gain some weight to get me to the 35BMI. WHICH HAS GOT TO BE THE DUMBEST THING, but it's working (lots of Starbucks shakes) I hate it, my knees hurt, hurts to walk up the stairs in my house, hurts to get out of the chairs, and my lower back feels like someone has hit me. I needed to be OVER 35 and ONE cormorbity (sleep apnea) and that's an entirely different story, but if that's what it takes to get me to the surgery then so be it. I was uncomfortable at 170 but with the amount of diet I was on, the amount of water and workouts I did, nothing helped in the last 3 years, so it's to surgery. They (medical) really need to do something for those of us that are under the 35BMI, especially if we can show years of hard work and testing and nothing helps. But gaining those last 20 pounds has taken about two months, it's been actually hard and I'm SO SICK AND TIRED OF JUNK FOOD. I am trying to maintain my 200+ JUST for this reason Doctors are evil. -
Banded on Tuesday the 16th and incredibly hungry

hi beccie pls can u tell me what crystal light is everyone who's been banded is having it i want to order some as i get banded on 9th feb lso what is boullion? hope u r doing ok with ur weight loss regards lizzy -
Just going through the 2 week liguid diet. Only allowed 4 protein drinks and water. Getting through it. As of today down to 229 from 240 in 8 days. It's been rough the last 2 with being hungry. Switched my drinks to strawberry and chocolate and made it with my bullet with ice to make it like a shake. It's very good and helps to make it slower to drink. Fighting the allergies with being tired and soar throat, just took tylenol allergy for it. Need to get some energy back. Going to get the vitamins Monday before surgery on Wednesday. Legs and feet are starting to feel less swollen from the weight loss Wich is good for me, I retain water alot. My everyday and thoughts revolves around this new chapter in my life. Health issues and comfort food are my biggest issues. Always been able to loose weight before I hit 40, just can't fight against serious medical issues to even walk comfortably and two ankle/foot surgeries already. Another after the sleeve. Everyone has issues and that is why we are all here. Not to cure them all but to have tools to help our struggles how ever we can for better quality of life. I call my self a pear with legs! Small up top and bottom heavy...and it's not my waist. Thighs, hips and ass! Never will be proportioned. I'm ok with that. Just this body now keeps my physical activities very limited. Glad to be on here. Hope to learn, and support others. Here is to my last 5 days before a new chapter of being healthy and staying that way. It's my life!

Fainting, tremors and weakness can be signs of low blood sugar. Several individuals that underwent RNY gastric bypass surgery experience a type of hypoglycemia called "Reactive Hypoglycemia". Here is one link about this condition but you can search for other links on the internet. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass/
