  1. I am three weeks post-op and saw my surgeon today. He advanced me to soft food (from pureed or mushies). I weighed 188. I was 196 on the day of surgery. He wants me to lose 10-15 pounds in 3 weeks. Doesn't that seem like a lot? Aren't we supposed to (as with any diet) lose about 1-2 pounds a week? I have been exercising. I have not had a fill yet. My other question. My port area still hurts. Is that normal? My surgeon said it's probably because I am doing more. Then I remember that my abdominal incision from my hysterectomy was sore to the touch for 3 years and my lumpectomy (for breast cancer) still is sore to the touch after 6 years. Thanks.

    wierd reaction

I was given a hand out with my pre op diet and here is what they mention to be aware of in the pre op phase (also the post op 2 weeks I am sure too) 1 - Intolerance to cold 2 - Light-headedness on rising, due to Water loss 3 - Fatigue 4 - Dry skin, dry hair, and brittle nails 5 - Temporary loss of some hair 6 - Change in bowel habits 7 - Headache, especially in the first few weeks 8 - Improvement in fertility 9 - Bad Breath 10 - Gallstones & Gall Bladder On the form for the Bad Breath is where it says to massage the gums because you won't be eating anything. I know my lips have been really dry, same with my forehead and my hands feel really tight like they are drying up. I hope that helps a little but I believe the dryness will continue until we start to eat again.
  3. I am 8 days out of surgery. I have lost about 10 pounds. However I did not lose any weight from yesterday to today。

    Food Funeral

For me, it was right after I got my approval. I guess knowing that the surgery had been approved made it "real" and caused me to go into food funeral mode. In my case, I gained 10 lbs and got a right good talking to by the surgeon. By my surgery date, I'd gotten those 10lbs. back off, but I can't help but think how much further along I'd be if I hadn't indulged. Also, now that I'm almost 4 months out and can eat pretty much anything, I feel a bit foolish about it because I haven't really had to say "goodbye" to anything I really like.
  5. Trust me it will get so much better! I was the same way! 65lbs and only down 2 sizes! I was so mad and frustrated for so long but then seriously in the blink of an eye I am in a 12... And a 10 is not far behind (I just bought the 12s last week!!) That chart someone posted with the inches of hips and size seems to be right on target for me. Congrats on all the weight you have lost!
  6. I'm wondering how I'm going to do this too, especially the whole "small sips of water all day" thing. I work graveyard in the lab, 10 hour shifts. We get 2-15 min breaks and a 30 min lunch. In reality I'm lucky to get 2 breaks. It's going to be a PITA to unglove/ungown/wash everytime I need to get a drink of water. I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it. I'm thinking of telling my supervisor that I just need more, smaller breaks.
  7. Ah, I miss the 4 am Denny's runs after those "19-year-old male with profuse vomiting, alcohol ingestion" 911 calls! These days, when I'm away at school all day, I pack hardboiled eggs, small yogurt containers, Protein shakes, and a couple of wheels of Babybel cheese - Gouda is my favorite, it's quite soft. I don't know if you are doing a low-carb thing, but I also like fruit. Right now, I've got plums and persimmons in the fridge.

    Not losing consistently

I've averaged about 10 pounds a month in the 6 months since I've had my surgery (down 64 since surgery, 94 total). My loss is much slower than I expected it to be and even got discouraged early on because my surgeon asked me why I wasn't losing more weight at my first 2 post op appointments. I've noticed that I tend to lose on a pattern and I stall every month for 1-2 weeks around my period. It's frustrating but it's my bodies way to dealing with this process so I've come to accept it. I started this process a year ago July 19th and I'm down just under 100 pounds so the frustration and stress has been worth it in the long run. I would like to lose another 37 pounds to reach my ultimate goal.

    Warning to new sleeves

I am going through this too ... just started mushies two days ago. I chew as much as I can and swallow, then wait to take a bite, etc. Yesterday I needed to go meet my mom and ate my lunch without taking a long enough break between bites, and within a few minutes I was feeling like I was going to vomit -- thankfully I didn't throw up, but I needed to sit down and keep my eyes closed for a good 10-15 minutes until the nausea passed. At dinner last night I ate with my husband (something I had stopped doing while on full liquids, because I couldn't stand to watch him eat food while I was stuck on liquids). I had pureed takeout chicken curry for me and DH had lamb vindaloo. It was hilarious. I could only eat I think 3 or 4 small bites, chewed to oblivion -- and then my tummy had that feeling like, "don't put anything else in here, girlie, or I am going to punish you!" So in the time it took my husband to eat a big serving of vindaloo, a big piece of naan, and about 10 pieces of chicken pakora (kind of like Indian style chicken nuggets), I had eaten this TINY amount of chicken (less than 1/8 cup) and still had more than half the portion I had measured out for myself (which I never did finish, btw). Of course I remember that before surgery I could put away nearly the same amount of food as DH while eating, and it such a strange and crazy and almost sad experience to eat dinner with him now. I have to eat so slowly and cautiously, and my head/mouth wants to keep eating but my tummy says "don't you dare!" Don't get me wrong, I am so happy to have this tool. But it truly is a new way of eating -- literally I am learning how to eat all over again, like I'm a baby. I intellectually knew this would be happening prior to surgery, but like most other life lessons it's one thing to understand it intellectually and a whole other thing to experience it. And it is challenging and plain old weird!

    Always on the go......

This procedure is pretty serious business. It will be changing your life. Pre-op diets not only prepare your liver for surgery but also prepares you for post-op eating. Planning meals is super important to success. It's time to slow down and make time for your meal plans. As much as we believe we are "on the go" we really can carve those times we need. Think about what your willing to drop everything for now and transfer that same desire to planning. Instead of going out to eat, drive to the grocery store and shop for the week. If you go to bed at 10 stop what your doing at 9 and prep three meals for the next day. It really is all about making these healthy changes a priority. Take care

    Urinating Pain (males)

Hi OKC, no catheter was not used thanks god. They were threatening me with it all day after I woke up on surgery day Monday. I tried 3 times to go to no avail. Finally they gave me a deadline if I didn't go by 10pm they would insert catheter. I muscled out of bed right around 10 and waited and waited.. Finally like a faucet lol. Filled the jug; gave it to nurse and attempted to go back to sleep. I'm wondering if it's because lack of of Fluid intake post op. Like above poster says, although I'm drinking 3 16 oz Poland spring Water bottles plus crystal light. Can't believe how long it takes me to consume 1 16" bottle of water! Damn! Stuck Already?!

Please don't take this the wrong way. It only been 5 days. The first 10 pounds (maybe more) was water weight. You now need to either burn 3500 cals or cut 3500 cals from your food intake in order to loose 1 pound.! Also some people gain a few pounds from the surgery itself ( from the IVs's).
  14. I started to get leg cramps last night in the calf muscle. My understanding is that deficiencies in nutrients like magnesium and zinc may cause cramping. Two questions: 1. My Multivitamin says it has 10% magnesium and 200% zinc. Not sure, but I also may be getting these from my Protein intense diet. 2. I have really increased my exercise this week where I have averaged an hour of intense cardio a day. I do still drink 100+ oz Water a day and 125 grams protein a day. Your thoughts?

    Alcohol...

I was 5 weeks out and went slow the first time. I am now approx 10 weeks out and have gone out for drinks about 4x total. I have decided to stick with vodka/water with an occasional shot of tequila in there. I have had no issues and my tolerance has been somewhat impacted. Take it slow and see how your body handles it. I always have a Powerade Zero waiting at home or in my purse because it can take up to 2 days for me to feel fully hydrated if I do not stay on top of during my drinks and the day after.
  16. Need advise on how to proceed getting insurance to approve/pay for replacement lapband. Original lapband wasn't working. Went into surgery to have it repaired or replaced, but lazy surgeon took it out instead of replacing it. I asked him why; said that he didn't have authorization. That was a lie...I talked to the insurance company and he had authorization. It has been 1.5 years since he took it out. It has taken me this long to get up enough trust to go back to talk with another surgeon to get it replaced. Not back to my original weight (10 lbs shy). Insurance says I don't meet criteria. What options do I have to get them to pay for it to be replaced? They were going to pay for it before, but the surgeon screwed up.
  17. I too am very all or nothing. Either I eat great all day, or I eat like crap all day. I have other addiction issues, food just being one of them. I lost all my weight by going "cold turkey". I ate nothing high fat or high carb for about a year. I am now trying to strike a balance. I was in therapy for a while, but stopped because I thought I had everything under control. However, now I am struggling a bit to maintain. Like I said, I am very all or nothing. Once I get this last 4 pounds off , I gained about 10, (I am doing protien shakes for the past few days) I plan to eat treats in moderation- like once every 1-2 weeks, and make it a reasonable amount. I need to stop "pigging out" all day just because I ate something not on my food plan. I am thinking of going back to my therapist to help with this. Best Wishes!
  18. I think a lot of bandsters do therapy without knowing it I've noticed that a lot of bandsters use Self-Control Therapy on themselves, which is really just a series of methods designed to make eating more mindful and conscious rather than emotional and unconscious. For example, monitoring your eating behavior through tracking/journalling is a technique used in therapy. In addition to logging every thing that goes in your mouth (including Water and vitamins-- everything), you could also name your current emotion and make a quick rating on a scale of 1-10 of how strong it is. This just keeps you mindful and accountable, and also helps you see patterns. Also, I've noticed a lot of people use stimulus control methods-- which are just like rules that you set around eating to control how and where you eat. Really, bandster rules are like this. One "easy" one is to set a rule that the only place you eat is at the kitchen table when home, or at place "x" at work. This means no eating in front of the television, grabbing a snack and eating it while you walk around the house, etc. This way, you are again taking steps to put yourself at the table and making a conscious choice to eat. That said, I do think for a lot of people having an "outside voice" who is empathetic and caring, but honest, is very very helpful. Finally, I can say that I see myself a lot in your post and the band has helped me tremendously. Yes, I have to do a lot of work and yes, I have to make good choices. BUT, the band just makes me generally less interested in food because I'm just not that hungry when it's working at it's best. And, if I do get bored and pull out Snacks, as long as I pull out something healthy, I don't do much damage (yesterday, for instance, I had an ounce of cheddar cheese which is full of Protein to snack on and it was fine- I was still under calorie for the day).
  19. SleeveToBypass2023

    Confused by Consult

My thoughts are that you need a new surgeon. If you have reflux, DO NOT get the sleeve. It will likely make it a lot worse. I was able to choose between bypass and sleeve because my A1c was less than 7 and because I don't have any form of reflux, so I chose the sleeve. My husband has GERD and a higher A1c and was advised that bypass is really his only option. Sometimes those that never had reflux get it with the sleeve and have to revise to a bypass to resolve it. And while the sleeve has less risk, the bypass does give about an extra 10% of weight loss. So definitely find a new surgeon.
  20. Omg..I actually am opposite of you..I had health net 3yrs ago and was referred to Pacific bariatric. .went to seminar in October and by December I was told I would be scscheduled for surgery in January. .did everything from pre op classes to all the testing required. .sadly the medical board denied me last minute despite my countless pages and pages of documented attempts to lose weight that spanned almost 10 years...fast forward to last year in April I am back with Kaiser and I was approved for the options program..had surgery 3weeks ago..Pacific bariatric I thought did good in terms of making you informed. .perhsps not as much as Kaiser but maybe things have changed I was under the care of Dr. Suh at the time...I was happy overall in the way things moved smoothly. .but unfortunately like I said getting approved last minute wsd an issue.
  21. I am 10 years out from my sleeve surgery. I came to give an update (I used to love them when I was new!) and a warning. Update - I weighed 275 at surgery and now weigh 177. My weight varies within a 5 pound window. I don't worry about it, don't think about it, and rarely weigh except at the doctors office. It took several years to relax and get to the point of stepping away from the scales. My stomach has not stretched. I can eat approx 1/3 to 1/2 cup at a time and eat 4 or 5 times a day. Cautionary tale - I have eaten as I was told to do, always putting protein first. I take vitamins. I try to go for nutritious veggies after protein. After 2 years of feeling awful I now know that I AM MINERAL DEFICIENT! It's a long story about how I found out, but I now have concrete results from hair tissue mineral analysis plus extensive blood work. Mineral deficiencies are rampant in the population, not just bariatric patients, but we are more susceptible due to our diets. Our soils are depleted of minerals so our food is as well. It's not just about, for example, being calcium deficient. It's about the ratio of all the essential minerals like magnesium, iron, etc. They have to be in balance for them to work. So taking calcium supplements or iron or whatever aren't doing any good if the rest isn't there for them to work with. (hope that made a little sense) You aren't going to hear this from most doctors, it usually takes a functional doctor to be willing to dive into this. One symptom was passing out whenever I got hot. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital twice for this. My "regular" doctor kept telling me I was dehydrated and to take potassium. (Note: I still drink 100 oz a day since surgery, how am I dehydrated). He was looking at basic blood work. Under his treatment I got worse. Once I had all the tests done, I have almost too much potassium but practically no magnesium and low salt, both are needed to interact with the potassium. Good news - This can be reversed. I am telling everyone I know to start supplementing trace minerals. It's easy, I use a few drops of trace mineral concentrate in my water all day. Due to my deficiencies I take some other mineral supplements but that is the main secret sauce. And it's so easy! I feel like I have come back to life!! That's probably way more than you wanted to know. I'll be quiet now. LOL I just hope I help to keep someone else from going down this path.
  22. Love bug, that's how I felt. I didn't know when my bladder was full. I'm a teacher and can only pee at 8:30 am, 11:10 a.m, and 2:30 .I have a camel bladder and need to in my profession, but I used to go after school. Now I notice I don't pee until 4 and that's usually atleast 24 oz after my lunch break.

8 days post HELP ME PLEASE

Everyone seems to have variations in what their doctor/hospital recommends for post op diet. I was told to stay away from dairy and milk products until day 10 because they cause nausea and stomach upset. I'm wondering if the dairy in the yogurt and protein shakes are giving you these issues. Buy some flavored electrolytes to put in your water. They help when you have the runs and are not getting that much liquid - also help even out blood pressure.

    Is this normal?

Hi I was banded 10-07-10 and have that same pain, it is very slowly easing up. It is really depressing after almost 3 weeks to still have such a pain. It is not present all the time, but once I bend or stretch in a certain way, it's like a hot knife. I understand what you are talking about and am glad to see someone else who had it and it finally went away.
