Illinois Plans Under Medicaid Covering WLS
Dana Collins replied to bb1008's topic in Insurance & Financing
Hi bb1008, just reading your question. I recently just switch my Medicaid health plan to meridian after researching coverage as well. However, I'm a 11yr. Vet of the gastric bypass, I'm presently seeking a revision to possibly the ds switch. At that time 11yrs ago I had bcbs ppo, I was still denied several times and I did more than my share of stipulations until they finally got an approval. I've been practically asking the same question of coverage (rearranging the words) till finally I run into a statement that says meridian is covered once in a lifetime with exceptions of fixing complications, but does not cover members with prior bariatric surgeries. I've been having the 8-10th year complication/ failure issues that I'm seeking help for, my situation makes me a prime candidate for revision. Hoping that my team can get what I need done to qualify. Because once your surgery is done no one wants to touch you cuz they don't know the (gps) of your abdomen, smh. Let me know how the meridian experience turned out for you, my pre opt consult for revision is Friday🤔😣😒😞🤞🤞🤞🤞👍 -

Thanks. It has been very rough. Looking forward to hopefully keeping down food after the revision. But, honestly, nervous about another surgery with more potential risks/complications. I am praying everything goes well for us both! -

Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
Changing4me1 replied to Elrix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well I did love mine the first six years then well it was a flipped port then things just got worse I was a size four and six and did well. Then at the ten year mark it got bad I could now longer keep food down it herniated my esophagus and eroded into my stomach. I have to sleep sitting up or I coughed up content of stomach. I went to ER they did tests and I had to have emergency surgery two days later. Because I was so small they didn’t want to revise and yes being without my band I was starving for first time in ten years I went from size for to six and eights so dr refused to do vsg until my stomach could heal I had to weight six months. I knew I needed a tool in my life. So I fought to lose the ten pounds I gained took the classes through insurance and had vsg 2/13 slightly over six months from my band removal. The band is great until it’s not. My doctor told me ten years seems to be the magic number for most he doesn’t see bands stay longer then that really and explained that Kiaser not longer will do them because of the issues. Lapband 9/11/07 227 pounds Vsg 2/13/18 Pre op diet 188 Sd. 180 Cw 169 167 per Dr. scale First goal 169 2/26/18 Second 150 Goal weight 138 -
Hey Casey5, the same thing is happening to me! They went in to dilate the stricture and found an ulcer. Now I'm on a feeding tube for 3 weeks while it heals. Can you update us on what happened with you? I'm so afraid I will need revision surgery. I look forward to hearing your story. Hoping your feeling much better at this point.

Stricture AND Ulcer
Adventurousanimal replied to Adventurousanimal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm sorry Klopez002, it is definitely not pleasant. I would make your surgeon order a barium swallow test ASAP. That was how they found that nothing was really going down anymore, and not being able to tolerate liquids was the last straw for me. Basically, after finding the ulcer they decided to put me on a feeding tube for a few weeks. It goes in my nose and through my pouch, bypassing the ulcer so it can heal without being irritated. As much as I hate this feeding tube, finally getting nutrition has made me feel a lot better. I have another week and a half with this feeding tube (not eating or drinking otherwise), then they will go back in and try to dilate the stricture again. I'm really hoping the ulcer is healed by then, because the next option is revision surgery. I am so ready to be feeling better. Has anybody gone through something similar to this? My surgeon made it sound like it as a somewhat rare combination of complications. -
Well, let me first start by saying that I have no regrets at all for having WLS (I had the sleeve). I am not going to share a "normal" experience. At least in the last 16 months that I have pretty much been visiting bariatricpal, I do not consider my experience the norm. I truly believe that if you search around enough, you will see that most people have a good experience. I think some people experience somewhat expected nausea in the beginning, but that it isn't prolonged say, for several months. In my case, nausea kicked in not in the beginning, but actually a couple months post sleeve. It gradually got worse, and now, 15/16 months post sleeve, it is relentless. But I have had a lot of underlying health probs and a lot of it stems from a terrible colon resection. Nausea now, along with pain when eating and terrible acid reflux has set me back to eating only liquids or very well pureed food. This is not a normal experience. Seeing my surgeon on Friday to talk about revision to gastric bypass. If you have acid reflux and it is a problem, then the sleeve is probably not for you. The bypass would serve you better. I can't give any other info on bypass, as I haven't done much research yet. Whatever route you go, I wish you the best.

Yikes! So sorry to hear that and i really feel for you. I can relate to you w/all the surgeries, as this will be my 5th one in 3 years. Most recent was gallbladder, which was a breeze for me, but I also had an open hernia surgery in June 2017 that gave me a lot of problems. I see why you said that you're scared of the bypass, if that's what my resolution will be, then I think I will have that same feeling...among other feelings. Mainly, one more surgery to get through just sounds exhausting. The whole entire process, including more medical bills and stress on an already stressed body. Ah, well, now I am just complaining. Something tells me that you understand though. It is like you said, sounds like you don't have much of a choice other than to go the revision route. Yes, I will let you know what the doc says. Let me know when you get a surgery date as well and take care until then!

Holy cow, that's awful. I haven't had those tests done, so I don't know where my reflux reading is, but like you, I pretty much have it all the time. My surgeon currently has me doubling the dose of Protonix. Sorry to hear about your issues, but glad that you are working towards a resolution with the upcoming surgery in the works. Hopefully, life after the revision will be much better!

Revision to 2006 RNY
jcrowder replied to nickie2524's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Nickie- Belowis everything they identify as experimental or investigational per their policy bulletin. Here is the link to the original document: http://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/100_199/0157.html It looks like band over bypass is on the list. My surgeon had suggested as one of three options to do an endoscopic suturing procedure. He said less risk, less cost, no hospital time but the results were also questionable and it had to be either/or. So if the endoscopic option didn't work, then I couldn't go back and do the laprascropic procedure later. Good news, I found out surgery was approved. Now I just need to decide whether to move forward or not. He was very keen on making sure I understand the increased risk and decreased opportunity for weight loss outcomes. Hence my full court press with counseling and weight loss meds as adjuncts. Let me know how yours turns out!!Experimental and Investigational Bariatric Surgical Procedures: AspireAssist aspiration therapy “Band over bypass” or LASGB revision of prior Roux-en-Y gastric bypass "Band over sleeve" or LASGB revision of prior sleeve gastrectomy Bariatric surgery as a treatment for idiopathic intracranial hypertension Bariatric surgery as a treatment for infertility Bariatric surgery as a treatment for type-2 diabetes in persons with a BMI less than 35 Conversion of sleeve gastrectomy to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass as a treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) Gastric bypass as a treatment for gastroparesis Gastroplasty, more commonly known as “stomach stapling” (see below for clarification from vertical band gastroplasty) Laparoscopic gastric plication (also known as laparoscopic greater curvature plication [LGCP]), with or without gastric banding LASGB, RYGB, and BPD/DS procedures not meeting the medical necessity criteria above Liposuction (suction-assisted lipectomy; ultrasonic assisted liposuction) Loop gastric bypass Mini gastric bypass Natural orifice transoral endoscopic surgery (NOTES) techniques for bariatric surgery including, but may not be limited to, the following: Gastrointestinal liners (endoscopic duodenal-jejunal bypass, endoscopic gastrointestinal bypass devices; e.g., EndoBarrier and the ValenTx Endo Bypass System); or Intragastric balloon (e.g., the ReShape Integrated Dual Balloon System); or Restorative obesity surgery, endoluminal (ROSE) procedure for the treatment of weight regain after gastric bypass surgery; or Transoral gastroplasty (TG) (vertical sutured gastroplasty; endoluminal vertical gastroplasty; endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty); or Use of any endoscopic closure device (Over the Scope clip [OTSC] system set, Apollo OverStitch endoscopic suturing system, StomaphyX endoluminal fastener and delivery system) in conjunction with NOTES; Open adjustable gastric banding Prophylactic mesh placement for prevention of incisional hernia after open bariatric surgery Roux-en-Y gastric bypass as a treatment for gastroesophageal reflux in non-obese persons Sclerotherapy for the treatment of dilated gastrojejunostomy following bariatric surgery Silastic ring vertical gastric bypass (Fobi pouch) Vagus nerve blocking (e.g., the VBLOC device, also known as the Maestro Implant or the Maestro Rechargeable System) VBG, except in limited circumstances noted above. -
Yes, bad acid reflux and doctor says that it has caused the erosions. That, along with other probs that it is causing are the reason for the possible revision.

Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
Bhageerah replied to Elrix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was looking at getting the lap band done but my surgeon warned against it, they stated that they remove more than they put in. They also stated that if they were researched more than they may not have been accepted under todays standards. I came home did my own research and made my choice for the VSG, I can not change your mind but I personally hate surgery. I only wanted to do this one time vs having the risk of going back and having a revision or removal done. Several of the staff in the Dr office had the band, and they actually warned against it as well, they were working to get the band removed and then have a VSG. I am not a chicken when it comes to pain but I personally would rather have one surgery vs several! -

That's great, glad things have turned out well for you. I deal with terrible GERD among other things. Not getting much down other than soups because of the constant pain and nausea. Appt with my surgeon on Friday. Will be interested in what he has to say. He mentioned to me a few weeks ago that he has never had to do a revision from sleeve to bypass. Oh boy. Thanks for your response! -

Hello friends, 15 months post sleeve here, have lost a lot of weight, almost to goal. I am having a lot of problems and may be facing a revision soon. Would be interested in your experiences/progress after revision surgery. Are you glad that you had the revision? How much has it helped with issues you were dealing with pre-revision? Thank you -
Had my sleeve in Nov 2016. Down from 334 lbs to 182 lbs, not too far from my goal weight. Have another appointment with my surgeon on Friday. Been having severe nausea and some discomfort in chest since the sleeve 15 months ago. It has gotten progressively worse until the last 2 months where I can't even eat solids without severe chest pain and nausea, so I avoid them altogether now. Had an endoscopy a few weeks ago, no stricture, just erosions. At that time my surgeon said he didn't think he would have to do a revision. Now I am starting to wonder.

Hi all! I posted this in the general forum as well, but since I’m going for VSG I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have it here as well. I just wanted to introduce myself. I’ve been on the forums in the past to read all I can about the VSG surgery. Tons of great info here. I had the lap band placed on 2008 and finally had it removed last year because of a lot of complications. Now I am on the journey to VSG. Truthfully I should had had the revision when I had the band taken out, but the surgeon was against it. Now I am tracking my weight with my Dr. to fulfill the 6 month requirement for my insurance. My goal is to have the surgery sometime in July since that’s the timeline for the insurance, but we’ll see. Im sure there are others going through this same timeline so if your looking for support count me in.
